@J.Musser Love that sign!! Going to share that one around here! I saw a cute one about Jesus and Facebook-can't remember how it started but ends with Seek His face and read His book. Yours was better. Sorry about your flat tire. We bought snow tires this yr-turned out to be a good investment!

Sue
12:49 AM
The question about when to fertilize seedlings came up in my vtc queue. I've been comparing and get why it's a dup, but your answer's a bit more detailed and people are liking it. Guess that can be said for lots of dupes tho. Are you voting to close it? I want to be a responsible voter and dups are hard.

Sue
1:13 AM
I took the plunge and decided to agree with close-vote, but I don't think I formatted the link right. I copy/pasted from the one that was already in the box from the previous closer, but the whole question came up, including the answers. Oh well, I'm trying! Long day here too & gotta eat. Hope you've had 5 burgers or 5 lbs of chicken or both!
I also hope you eat your veggies!!

1:44 AM
I don't eat as many veggies as I should.
When i'm in shape I weigh about 215 lbs with a 32" waist, right now I weigh 195 with a 31" waist because of stress.
:(
@Sue Lol. I ate a lot of good, healthy beef stew tonight. Perfect in this weather.

@Sue Thanks, Sue! :)

Sue
2:26 AM
@J.Musser mmmmmm beef stew yummy!
You guys have a lot of snow?
If you want some, I'd be happy to ship some your way.
Cool news though-last fall you taught me how to dig up a begonia and bring it in. It's been thriving under my Gro-lights and is now flowering! Makes me happy!
Especially since I have no idea when I'll be able to plant outside this year.
@Shule My pleasure. Nice to see you again!

Sue
2:43 AM
Just curious J. In the Tavern, etc., I'm learning what the shortcuts mean for your actions like cvp, etc. what does naa mean?

3:40 AM
@Sue not an answer

8 hours later…
11:20 AM
@Sue yeah... but then there's a good long answer on the other one by itsmatt.
@Sue reply to you, no ping:
Hey Sue...guess you get the logistics better than me! I am trying to say go ahead and plant the bulbs ASAP. Interesting...! — stormy 11 hours ago

5 hours later…
4:05 PM
Why is @stormy's post getting so much negative attention? Especially compared to the anecdote about a completely different species.

2 hours later…
Sue
5:40 PM
@J.Musser Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm busy but will definitely address the problem soon by leaving her a comment. At this point I'd like to delete the comment I made but others upvoted it and I'm not sure what to do. In the meantime, here's your vegetable for the day!
@NiallC. Hi. I'm sorry to be part of something that took you away from your important duties! I'm going to post a comment of apology on the question, and will send you a message here later when I have a few minutes to think how to properly word them.

@Sue You're correct that it doesn't directly address the question, but the other post doesn't either and it's getting positive attention. I'm concerned that there's some ganging up on stormy here

6:21 PM
@NiallC. I think Bamboo's post directly answers the question, and the other two don't. I don't know about ganging up, but stormy made the (random) statement that tulips produce a toxin and kill themselves, which goes against my experience. Fine, except that she didn't add a reference, and after kevinsky commented, still no attempt at adding a reference. Thus a dv from me.

7:01 PM
@J.Musser Fair enough. I just get a little perplexed about this site. OP asks about tulips, gets an answer about crocuses (which are not even related) and it gets upvotes. Another answer talks about tulips, and gets downvotes, flags, delete votes, and lots of comments.

@NiallC. lol. well the crocus answer does make something of a point, as crocuses are generally hardier than tulips, and failure in zone 4 with a November planting of crocuses does seem to be applicable to the question.
Now if that was me, I'd have made it a comment, not an answer, but everyone's different...

Where does the OP say anything about USDA Zone 4?

he doesn't.
the one who posted the anecdote about crocuses did.
@NiallC. The OP is most likely in USDA zone 8b.
but we have to consider future readers, not only the OP, when looking at answers.
also notice in the question:
> tulips and other early-bloomers
so not only tulips.

7:31 PM
OP shouldn't expect us to guess what they have.

lol
all early spring blooming bulbs I know of are reliably hardy in zone 8a though, so Bamboo's answer applies.

7:51 PM
18 unanswered questions, about the lowest i've seen on a beta. Great job all!

2 hours later…
Sue
10:03 PM
@J.Musser The lilac seed question's still mine! I've done all the research, and just got our laptop fixed so I can cut/paste it all together, which is much harder than the iPad. Expect my answer in a day or two!

@Sue okay!
Hey, we're on at the same time again

Sue
@NiallC. @NiallC. Please see my new comment on that question. It sums up who I am and what I tried to do. It was obviously a "rookie mistake," although that's no excuse. I in no way meant to hurt Stormy's feelings or make unfounded accusations.
Unfortunately I think the other answer came after Stormy's, and might have elicited the same kind of responses. Again, no excuse.
Thanks for looking out for us!
@J.Musser Hey!
Nice to seeeee you.

Thankfully stormy is a nice old gal and generally easygoing with mistakes of that kind
@Sue you toooo

Sue
I'm glad to hear that about Stormy.

I seriously think it wasn't a great huge deal - I like to minimize drama :)

Sue
10:10 PM
You're good at minimizing drama-an admirable trait!

thanks
we don't have a drama.se, so no place for that type of thing :D

Sue
I also think you explained yourself well to Niall-kind of spoke for all of us.
Oh my gosh, can you imagine a drama site!!
It would be mostly women I bet!

@Sue lol

Sue
Actally, it's interesting how many "chatters" here are men.
Ooops, typo there!

@Sue It's because most of them are Stack Overflow-ers (mostly guys) that stumbled across this site and had an interest.
I found the site doing research some years back, and started answering/asking stuff.
And there's @Bamboo. Not sure how she found it, but definitely a woman, and definitely no Stack Overflow there!

Sue
10:17 PM
It's fun-I just remember hearing somewhere that men speak 100 words a day and women 1,000!

@Sue Depends on the individual really

Sue
Yup. I'd like to have a cup of tea with Bamboo!

:P

Sue
Do you hang out at Christianity at all?

It's funny, she's usually on in the morning (for me), when I'm at work, and off when I'm on (later in the night for me). Timezone stuff...
So she answers the early questions, and I get the late ones.
so it ends up nice and quick for the askers, which is cool.

Sue
10:21 PM
Speaking of time zones-I've started looking at profiles and am amazed at the global reach of SE. Very cool!

@Sue Hmm, Iirc I was in their chat one time a while back.
@Sue yeah, really.
News (well, old news really):

Q: Help us test the shiny new "User Activity" page! (Plus a bunch of new features.)

JaydlesToday, we're shipping the new "Activity Page" of the Profile here on Meta SE, so you can test it out and hopefully share some feedback and suggestions before we ship it network wide. Hate words? Assuming you're signed in, just click your face up in the top bar, and you can see it right now. Or,...

Sue
@J.Musser Was asking cuz I went there just to look something up and a mod recently died young and it's hitting them hard. I feel sad for them.
@J.Musser I've been reading that post til my blurry eyes blur!! What think you of the changes.

They're planning to update all the site profiles (not just MSE) with 'em.
@Sue I think we could do without the 'next badge' section.
but we'll see how it goes

Sue
I agree but my hardest part is the People Reached thing.

why is that?

Sue
10:26 PM
Or helped or whatever.
I check out a lot of questions that look objectionable in order to learn stuff. That poster hasn't helped me, and I wouldn't want to think I've helped people just cuz they've looked at my questions.

I feel weird to do it, but posted a q on SA simply to work toward 250 rep :/

Sue
Maybe I don't understand the algorithm.

@Sue yeah, not really precise

Sue
I think working towards rep is cool. I'd do it if I was smarter!

You are smarter...
I just want to be able to view cv-s on SA

Sue
10:31 PM
Nothing wrong with that.

@Sue So it says reached, not helped, so even objectionable posters can 'reach' you.
@Sue still have 44 rep to go though...

Sue
Seeing cv-s is important to you, part of your work here really.
You work so hard to keep standards up, I think you should be able to see everything!

I guess its like asking questions here. The vast majority of my questions here are filler questions (originally to help with the q/day rate when it was low)
and I ended up asking by far the most questions of any user.
But that doesn't stop them from being filler questions.
At least they have an average score of over 5, which is decent.

Sue
@J.Musser True. I did a search of something the other day and a question with the sh.. word in the title came up. Normally I'd read that to see why it was even there, but if I read it now, it looks like that op reached me in a good way.

ah
I should set a rep goal for GL this year, just for fun.

Sue
10:36 PM
The other thing I don't like about the new page is the helpful flags thing, but somebody already commented about that. Makes lots of people look un-helpful!

@Sue I have over 530 here on GL
not too shabby

Sue
@J.Musser What would that rep goal be? What about a LH goal?

Hmm, I did 15k last year, but I came in part way through the second quarter of the year. Maybe 20k?
That would mean try to be around 40k by Jan. 2016
lol that sounds so weird

Sue
@J.Musser I respectfully disagree. Those are not filler questions. You and some others who provide the most questions are exceedingly smart, which is why a lot of us average users can't answer :)

Q: Should I cull June-bearing strawberries for fall bearing?

J. MusserThis year some of my Gurney's Whopper strawberries, a June-bearing variety, produced a few berries in the fall. That might weaken the plants for next years crop. Will culling them for this be effective or do they do this randomly ?

Sue
10:41 PM
@J.Musser You'll do it! You've managed to keep GL participation up, even with getting LH going, and keeping the streets safe for the rest of us.

thar's an example ^^
@Sue actually, I was acting as part of an awesome community, and we did it together.

Sue
@J.Musser Okay, I see why that looks like a filler question, but lots of people liked it.
Lorem's been around a long time too.

There are so many like that.
@Sue He was actually one of the original 3 pro tem mods here.
He stepped down and Niall filled in the void.

Sue
To people like me, those are just questions! Kinda like when somebody asks us something biblical we've been studying for years, but to them it's brand new and importanto!

they're almost all like that.

Sue
10:47 PM
@J.Musser Interesting. How long has Robert been around?

Wow, that one has over 6k views...
fyi (in case you didn't know), ipsum was formerly known as yoda

Sue
@J.Musser Wow-that one drew quite a thorough answer from Mike!

yup
Mike hasn't been seen since '11
:(

Sue
@J.Musser a Wondered-thought it was a nickname. Isn't it weird looking at those old questions and how chatty the site used to be?
@J.Musser Did you know him?

I just asked Mike if he might come back and he said he doesn't think so.
@Sue not personally... he is in the UK

Sue
10:50 PM
@J.Musser Reason?

@Sue No, not really.

Sue
GL's very popular in the UK!

@Sue Robert is an SE employee. He's the Director of Community Development for the network.

Sue
I've read his profile, but couldn't remember how long he's been around.

He's been around since 5 years, 10 months in the network.
of course, GL wasn't around that long...
@Sue yeah, US, UK, and Australia seem the most common.

Sue
10:53 PM
Btw, did you know that if you google Gardening and Landscaping Stack Exchange your name & GL email comes up?
I have a screenshot if it doesn't reproduce for you.

how embarrassing... o.o

Sue
@J.Musser Why?

I'm the top result under gardening.se

Sue
Googling Lifehacks brings up a big article about a former SE guy.

@Sue who?

Sue
10:56 PM
@J.Musser I think it's cool.
@J.Musser I forgot to screen shot but will look again. It's somebody who was instrumental in the forming of SE and stepped down a couple of years ago to start a different company.

@Sue Jeff?

@Sue Jeff Atwood?
@J.Musser Bamboo has children who work in high-tech; they recommended her to the site. It's somewhere way back in the transcript

Sue
@NiallC. Yup-just looked it up.

@NiallC. Ah!
@Sue no email for me... which is good

Sep 11 '13 at 14:58, by Bamboo
By the way, you contacted me before Christmas last year because I'd won something or other, and I asked for a teeshirt. Both my sons are programmers, and their faces were an absolute picture when they saw me wearing it, more so when they realised I'd won it, the funniest thing, I laughed till I cried

Sue
11:01 PM
@J.Musser I wondered about that...

If I could see my email from the google search I'd move it.
@NiallC. Ah! I remember seeing that now...

Sue
@J.Musser My google page looks a little different...
gardening and landscaping stack exchange
Ooops, not a url. Brb...

ah, ok

Sue
This was from last wk with your email.

Oh! yeah, I edited it then.

Sue
11:09 PM
Good idea.
Hey, did you like your vegetable?

which one?
the broccoli thing?

Sue
Yup! Know what it's called?

romanesco?

Sue
You win!

Lol, I cheated: I grew some a few years back - cool plant

Sue
11:13 PM
Apparently it's also a flower...

actually, an immature head of flower buds

Sue
You mean if left alone it would flower?

yup

Sue
I just got one for the first time last wk. Yummy!

yeah.
Flowering broccoli looks like this:

Sue
11:17 PM
I've seen that. What about flowering romanesco?

Kinda uglier actually. It's tighter, and more twisted, with smaller flowers
can't find a pic right now

Sue
The broccoli's pretty.

can be.

Sue
Your yard?

sometimes it's not. that one's especially nice lookin'
@Sue not that pic

Sue
11:20 PM
@NiallC. Cool-she must be a lovely lady!
@J.Musser but you have some?

*had, yeah

Sue
You grow a lot of veggies?

I'm shutting down the produce stand/garden, and turning the 5,000 sq. ft. of land back to lawn.

Sue
Was that picture from a few days ago your lawn?

@Sue no, I don't treat my own lawn
Too many chemicals.
People pay a lot for me to come in and simply assess their yards. It's kinda weird actually, I wouldn't pay someone to do that...

Sue
11:27 PM
We have people knocking on our door all the time offering "free" assessments.
We don't do much and are 100% anti-pesticide.
D doesn't like the big holes from the skunks, so sometimes he puts red pepper flakes in there, but that makes us sad cuz even though it doesn't hurt them we know they don't like it.

skunks like to rip stuff up. :D

Sue
Yup-it's fun to watch. I can't ever get a picture of a skunk looking up because they're always digging in the ground with their nose.
I forgot about a question I asked the other day when you were at your conference.

11:43 PM
@Sue Sometimes when I'm out doin' the chores late, I almost step on 'em
Our cat plays with 'em like they're best friends.

Sue
Cute! D doesn't like me to get too close, but I do!
@J.Musser Picture?

When the cat jumps on the skunks back and plays with it's tail, I always get scared she'll get sprayed.
@Sue I don't have one.

Sue
But she hasn't?

I don't tend to take pix unless I need em for something.
@Sue not so far

Sue
When I was young, we had two golden retrievers who pulled apart a skunk one night. It was sad and they smelled awful for weeks!

11:47 PM
dogs can be gross.
Stormy is an animal lover like you.

Sue
@J.Musser I noticed that in her profile. I agree about dogs-they're kinda my least favorite pet.

I love dogs.
:P

Sue
My cat that just died used to play fetch, so it was like having a dog!

lol
cats can be so funny sometimes

Sue
@J.Musser I know you do, even though Frank's allergic! Big dogs I hope?

11:49 PM
I'm glad SE has a chat feature.
@Sue My favorite breed is English Mastiff.

Sue
@J.Musser Me too! :)
@J.Musser Those are gorgeous.

And I can't stand Chihuahuas.

Sue
Couldn't agree more! Or most little dogs, because they never shut up!

They assume your fingers are lunch
lol
My favorite animals are still horses.
So fun to be arund, and train, and ride

Sue
Me too by far!
I had one when I was a teenager. He was my best friend!

11:53 PM
Of course, horses can be jerks, but I like those anyway. Just have to get to know 'em well.

Sue
They need respect & love, like any other animal.
I want a miniature horse. They can be house trained.
We had Pygmy goats for a while, but we had to move and our town's not zoned. Was very hard to give them up but we found a wonderful farm for them.

@Sue some goats think they're puppies.
They're so cute
i gtg now - cya later!

Sue
@J.Musser Ha ha-was just about to say the same thing! Thanks for chatting!
