@snailboat @snailboat perhaps the title could be reworded? and the relevant tags be added (wa-particle). Maybe the two questions could be labelled more clearly as well. Since the 2 sentences were related, perhaps keeping both questions together might be best. There are quite a few two-part or multiple-part questions around. Just my thoughts.

@rhyaeris Adding the tag is definitely a good idea :-)

@snailboat あなるほどね
@snailboat ほんまですね・・
@snailboat 今から分けられるんですか
ほんまに全然別の質問と答えになってしまいましたしね
分けたら解答が二つともacceptedされるかもしれないし

I've read the article about Stack Exchange being unfriendly posted on Tuesday this week. Although I'm by no means an experienced user, I can't help but feel that sometimes newbies are driven away by their own first questions that don't follow the rules of this site.
In particular, the やあります question was labelled as "unclear what you're asking", although I think it could be that the learner's mistake was simply something we couldn't identify with.
In his question, he mistook やあります for yarimasu; perhaps he thought 2 kana were needed to write out "ya", just like 2 kana spell じゃ "ja". Perhaps this was why the question was put on hold; we couldn't relate to his mistake.
Having one's first question put on hold doesn't feel good for the new user, so I just wanted to clarify this question. I might be missing something here. Any views on this?

ありゃ。この人の質問二つとも閉められてる
最初、「When conjugating yaru to arimasu」だったのね
なんで yaru -> arimasu と思ったのか・・・
「やる」を「~ます」形にするとき、って意味?
「や+あります」と思ったのかな
斜字体は * で挟む以外に、<i> でしたっけ?
<ita> でしたっけ

I can't understand much Japanese, but I understand your second and third lines
that was probably a typing error which I corrected... after that, the question does make sense, right?

あかん・・・イタリックにできない!
@rhyaeris あっ、すみません

こちらこそ すみません

@rhyaeris Maybe it was a typing error (arimasu->yarimasu) but I'm not sure

Well... his question originally was "When conjugating yaru to arimasu does to become やあります or やります?"

Yes I just saw the edit history

The fact that he wrote やります and やあります...
shows that most likely he knew yaru changed to yarimasu or at least something similar

10:21 AM
yeah so maaybe they just wanted to know how to spell yarimasu in hiragana

I think so too
So perhaps the "put on hold" might not be necessary

Oh, so in that case, he probably didn't know how to spell yaru in hiragana either, did he

Probably not...

「やある」とか・・・

ja -> じゃ
ju -> じゅ
cho -> ちょ
byo -> びょ
ya -> やあ?

10:26 AM
「やぁ」かも・・・

はい
unrelated, but I've always wanted to ask where you got your previous profile picture from

see, we're still not sure where he's stuck

I must admit that I don't know how to parse 「まあ、気まずくなんのだけはやめような」
if we assume that なんの → なるの
Is 「なるのだけは」 missing a particle or something?
だけ attaches to sentence ends, but I don't recall seeing it attaching to の
だけ + は + やめよう + な
I get the gist of the sentence but I don't understand the structure.
Hm, なるのだけは + やめよう
なるのは + やめよう
だけ belongs between の and は?
clause 気まずくなる + nominaliser のは + verb やめよう
That makes sense to me so far.
I guess the だけ in the middle of のは threw me off.

@choco 訂正ありがとうございます
われながらボロボロと馬脚が出てますね(てへぺろ
@oals um, only の is nominalizer, は is topic marker
and there are only two possible positions you can insert だけ in this sentence
気まずくだけなんのはやめような
気まずくなんのだけはやめような

@broccoliforest Yes, though I think of のは, のが, のを as a single clump for the sake of not cluttering my mental parser up too much.
I now realise that if I change の → こと, resulting in 気まずくなることだけはやめような, I find it much easier to parse.
I guess it's because の doesn't really strike as a noun to me. Hm.
