I have moderator question: When I award my bounty will the winner automatically get the "green tick" to show they have answered the question, or is there a way I can just give the bounty by itself to reward the best answer?

Anonymous
@Tim Bounties are separate from the green tick

Tim
8:37 AM
@snailboat So I just click on the number not the "tick"?

Anonymous
8:58 AM
Yes, that will award the bounty and not the green tick

At any rate, if you accidentally accept an answer you don't intend to, you can always un-accept it at any time :-)

I feel like I should ask a question about sentences that end with rising intonation on よ and ぞ

But I will probably come back to that sometime later

People come up with pretty funny things using dictionaries . . . :-) I don't know the word bonito, to be honest

This precise question is explained in depth in the late Ohno Susumu's 1999 best seller 日本語練習帳 (ISBN 4-00-430596-9), pages 72-75. Though the full topic is pages 46-88. — Dono 3 mins ago

Oh, I don't have that book!

One more book to buy?

Anonymous

わ、中古だと1円だって

Anonymous
@Choko I've had friends in Japan help me get things from Amazon Japan :-)

は+しない?

we have 悪くない+は=悪くはない... is there an equivalent for verb?
食べない+は=?
or does it even make sense with verbs?

Anonymous
食べない+は=食べ しない

Anonymous
If you split it into 動詞の連用形+する then you can add a particle

Anonymous
Because now you have two separate words

Apparently it's 剣(つるぎ), but I read it as 剣(けん) when I first got it

It doesn't have furigana though

3:20 PM
It says in the book

Anonymous
Just not on the cover or spine

Anonymous
I tried to read it a few years ago but it was too hard for me

How does it say? Doesn't it appear as 剣 all the time?

本文では振り仮名が・・・

Anonymous
Oh, it had furigana inside the book

Sorry, I said things confusingly!

wait, you can see deleted post with 2000 reps? I thought it was higher

Anonymous
It depends on if it's a beta site or graduated site

Ah 10k
that's why I was shocked
btw what's that about "first bonito of the season"?

3:31 PM
@3to5businessdays The book I took a picture of above talks about what は implies specifically with イ形容詞 (what would be called just 形容詞 in 学校文法), so I'm not sure if you should call it the "same thing" with 食べはしない

Anonymous
Because 悪い is gradable but 食べる is not

But the general sense of contrastive is still there no?
Just the somewhere-in-the-middle is specific to 形容詞

Anonymous
I've read multiple explanations now . . .

Anonymous
This book says

By the way is there a variant for 形容動詞? It's ではない though...

Anonymous
3:35 PM
I think sometimes the use of は with negatives is so conventionalized that I don't think it really has a contrastive meaning

Anonymous
I'm not sure I have all of that solid enough in my mind to explain it accurately

Just wondering if there's something like 悪くはない for 形容動詞, since ではない is conventionalized

Anonymous
What do you mean "something like"?

Anonymous
ではない is the negative of で+ある with は inserted

3:37 PM
oh, I mean the somewhere-in-the-middle thingy

Anonymous
Ohh

Anonymous
Oh no, 非回答者さん deleted his answer

But it's a good thing having multiple answers! :-)

Then you should post yours

Anonymous
Oh, no, I voted up both of the answers that are already there! :-) I don't need to post more

Anonymous
3:50 PM
Oh, I thought I upvoted them both

Anonymous
Maybe I didn't get a chance to upvote the other one before it disappeared

You have a book for reference though

Anonymous
I have lots of books! :-)

Damn my English!
I mean, you back it up with a reference.

Anonymous
No, I understood :-) It's just . . . I don't feel like I know it well enough to write an answer

Anonymous
3:54 PM
I know it well enough to chat about it! On chat :-)

Anonymous
(I don't have very high standards for "chatting about" :-)

Anonymous
I think that は in different situations can be really nuanced

The book has an answer/explanation for this specific situation being asked about though.
In other words, this question has a well-defined (specific) scope
unlike that question about てくる
