The following sentence appears in my textbook

I know すぎる and I know 買う, but its the first time Ive seen the て form.used that way. Amd I cant seem to find any reference of its use in the textbook. Could somebody explain it to me?

@cypher For the furigana script, is it possible to escape the character 【 ? Backslash+【 doesn't seem to work. For example, if I write 単語の頭につく【S】の発音, the "S" gets interpreted as furigana.

@Xeo In **general** (if it's joining sentences), the tense does carry over. Prices are somewhat stable, so both interpretations make sense.

Consider this example: 働きすぎて、体を壊した. (I harmed my body by working too hard). This makes sense only if the working-too-hard took place in the past as well. Compare with the English "by working too hard", which doesn't contain any tense either.
