12:01 AM
oh man guys
JLPT scores came in today
not passed :(

Anonymous
Oh no! Well, everyone seemed to say the test was harder than they expected

Anonymous
My study buddy passed n2 but only by one point

it looks like i passed every section, just barely, but that didn't give me a high enough overall score

Anonymous
That's really close to passing, then, isn't it? So this year you can pass it for sure? :-)

Anonymous
I'm scared of the JLPT.

12:07 AM
I..guess!
It's pretty scary! But also! it's just a test! the worst that can happen is you fail it.

Anonymous
Hehe. True!

Anonymous
I'm taking n1 this year, or so I am told.

nice!

Anonymous
I have to do a lot of listening practice.

Anonymous
I guess it's just scary because...

12:15 AM
My friends all have way too much confidence in me.

Anonymous
They're all expecting me to pass it easily

Yeah, I had the same thing

Anonymous
But I'm not really as good at Japanese as they think I am, so if I fail they'll all be like..

Anonymous
Well, I have no idea, I'm just imagining.

All my family and friends, who don't speak Japanese figured I'd pass

3 hours later…
3:02 AM
I'm somewhere in the N3-ballpark at the moment... expect to be in the N2-N1 range next year.
It looks like I may be moving to Japan this fall

2 hours later…
4:53 AM
Watching some old Japanese movies on hulu (criterean collection is free this weekend)... wow that's hard to understand...

Anonymous
5:51 AM
I don't feel like n-whatever is a good way to describe how much Japanese I know

Anonymous
But I should probably learn what I'm supposed to for each level.

Anonymous
As I've mentioned before, I've been trying to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, especially in the basics :-)

Anonymous
7:29 AM
I've been hanging out over at English Language Learners

Anonymous
I've answered seven questions! ^-^

Anonymous
I feel all helpful.

7:41 AM
Oddly... I ran across that phrase a few days ago as well... japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/11242 ... just sorta skipped over it

Anonymous
It makes sense to me, but not enough sense that I can actually explain it.

Anonymous
For a while I believed you could only claim to understand something if you were capable of explaining it

Anonymous
I think that's probably true... but at the same time, there are things I feel like I "kind of understand"

Anonymous
I wonder how many things I go through life believing I understand, but would be unable to actually explain if you cornered me and asked

Anonymous
xTCx's questions about Sword Art Online made me feel that way. It was all stuff I'd read before, and I suddenly found myself at a loss trying to explain it :-)

4:06 PM
What keyboards or input systems do Japanese typically use?
Does the keyboard look like this?
If QWERTY is the standard layout for western keyboards, is that their standard layout?

6:55 PM
Well, there was 101-key standard QWERTY (which became 104-key with the addition of two windows keys and one menu key)

Anonymous
And, the Japanese keyboard I got (from a coworker who came over from Japan and left his keyboard there :-) was a 109-key, which is based on the 101-key layout but with a few added keys

Anonymous
Besides the added keys, there's also kana printed on the keys, and you can switch modes to type kana directly instead of ローマ字 input

Anonymous
From what I understand, however, typing kana like that is less common than just typing ローマ字

Anonymous
So the main benefit of the 109-key layout is the key extra keys for conversion and such.

Anonymous
Though, er, maybe it was 106-key, and became 109-key with the addition of the 2x windows + menu keys.

7:01 PM
So, I think 109-key layout and ローマ字 input are normal... but then, some people do other stuff.
