@silvermaple Arguments on any of the three japanese-related subreddit's I've found are almost always "about" Japanese... not "of" it.

In other words, people making rather broad claims about the origins of words, or how common keigo is... or other such topics without a shred of evidence.

I actually like listening to Mumford & Sons... and have a Pandora station tuned to them (but have been in more of a "Colony 5" mood recently), but it's not music I ever expected to hear on American pop radio stations

Yeah, me too...They're speckled into my Pandora stations a bit, but it's fun to hear them on the radio

Of course, today I caught myself reaching for a "thumbs up" button on my car radio...

I seem to recall having a few boy band tapes that I listened to a bunch in elementary school

I just typed out a chapter review test on Lang-8 because I don't have the answer book, and I figured "what the heck maybe I'll get the answers there"...so now my wrist is sore, but I found even the act of typing out the questions was good practice.

at the very least it made me figure out what the readings for everything was without just skimming over it...

Yeah, I get anal about the readings when I'm reading my book, but for quizes and stuff...and anything on-line I have my trusty rikai-chan crutch

I'm reading a Japanese book, so it's written 縦書き (of course), so I'm getting really used to reading it

I had to write some papers in school and there was a certain knack to get...my hands have by going left to right for almost two decades now...

The book I have 精霊の守り人 is series with a bunch of sequeals, so I think I'll be set for a while

It's a book I would read in English, fantasy/adventure, aimed at a low enough target audience that I get a lot of furigana

unfortunately sometimes I find words that I look up only to realize that if they had been written in kanji I would have known them...

but that's all repetition, and soaking into my brain, or so I tell myself

Oh, here's a question: do you always 受ける a テスト

For example, there's the infamous JLPT, and that you 受ける

but if you're doing a 復習テスト at the end of a chapter in a work book, is that also 受ける?

At least, I think you 受ける the JLPT...unless that's only if you pass it

Also, when is it cool to use Alphanumeric punctuation marks ie ()?!, over the Japanese ones （）？！

I think it's the difference between halfwidth and full width, but...when do Japanese use them as halfwidth...I guess I should start trying to pay attention to that...
