8:33 AM
Morning, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Morning

9:26 AM
Am I right in thinking is specifically for software updates, not just for monitoring wirelessly? I've suggested a retag for iot.stackexchange.com/questions/201/… but just want to check that I'm not being stupid

@Aurora0001 That was my intent, yes. It might not be the best name, but I felt it was a step up on .

@Gilles good, I thought that myself about . Best not to have hundreds of tags that are just acronyms if we can help it

@Aurora0001 second that

user223506
9:47 AM
I really don't have the expertise to be able to participate

@Nullarbor welcome to the club! Still, well-researched questions are still great to ask and don't require a lot of subject knowledge

user223506
heh... I thought I had done that - not so

user223506
the comments are started to drift towards a very slight amount of sarcasm and derision

For what it's worth I don't think that's a downvote-worthy question

user223506
apparantly, it is pretty crap...lol

9:52 AM
Well, don't get discouraged, no-one really knows what's an on-topic question yet so you will get some downvotes for a question even if it's not that bad in some cases

10:04 AM
I've posted a question and I thought I'd ask in case there's something obviously wrong that I haven't spotted:
0
Q: How can I check if my IoT devices are infected with the Mirai worm?

Aurora0001I've recently heard about the Mirai worm, which infects vulnerable routers, IoT devices and other internet-connected appliances with insecure passwords. Mirai is suspected of being the cause of some of the largest DDoS attacks in history: Dyn estimated that the attack had involved “100,000 ma...

Does it look ok?

user223506
@Aurora0001 no thanks, already are a member of too many sites that I am uncomfortable/not confident to contribute to for my liking as it is

@Nullarbor I'm really sorry that you feel like that after the response (as I say, I can't understand why it got such a bad response) but honestly everyone has a few bad questions at first, so don't worry about it too much (no-one dislikes you because of the question!). If there's anything I can do to try and make the community more welcoming, please suggest it
Also I must admit that I put far more effort into thinking of my question than I do in writing most answers (which seems backwards but perhaps is a good thing)!

@Aurora0001 Looks good to me

@Helmar thanks for the comment - this is actually my first question on a SE main site
So I thought it'd definitely be worth checking with others

10:22 AM
@Aurora0001 That never hurts :)
I am more of an answering person, too.

user223506
@Aurora0001 nah, it's all good. The snark in the comments is a clear enough message of sorts

user223506
IoT was an option we were looking at, there are plenty of other resources we can draw from

@Nullarbor are there any comments that seem particularly snarky to you?
iot.stackexchange.com/questions/201/… doesn't seem very constructive but the others seem to just be trying to understand exactly what you're asking

user223506
the main thing is, there is a very clear lack of knowledge that i have - we were looking at various options for this project, this was one idea, a bit of a stretch admittedly - but we have several other options that we'll most likely try.

user223506
and there are plenty of places to learn IoT should we go down that path

10:29 AM
@Nullarbor perhaps the snark will be discouraged more when the pro tem moderators are chosen - until then I think moderation is mainly community-only
Honestly I don't know if it's just the SE team handling comment flags at the moment, so they will probably just remove things that are really bad

user223506
the post can stay as a warning for others

user223506
anyway, @Aurora0001 thank you for your time. I got to go, the remote medical app that I have written won't test itself (not yet, anyway)

@Nullarbor good luck with it

user223506
(ironically, it is partly an IoT project - but a colleague is handling that part)

11:15 AM
@Aurora0001 but on the other hand there is plenty of staff in the user list to carry that work load

@Ghanima fair point
All my tag wiki edits just seem to go through Robert Cartaino though so I assume he's the only one monitoring the edit queues

but as always SE is supposed to be community moderated so it is still up to us... if comments don't work and we think flags are not handled to our satisfaction we can take matters up the ladder, either through site-meta or directly to staff members at the moderators chat room
@Aurora0001 hmm, but there are at least ten other diamonds in our user list, maybe they're added by default but do not look into the queues

The trouble is most of the comments aren't really against any rules, they just seem to have a slightly snarky tone (and they were enough to upset Nullarbor, which means we should take some action)

@Aurora0001 then I would think that comments to that comment pointing out the issue in an impartial and neutral tone might be the first thing to do. Just keep in mind that comments should not drift into prolonged discussions

@Ghanima that's where the issue lies; avoiding meta-commentary on the comments themselves.

11:25 AM
@Aurora0001 still pointing to the be nice policy in its broadest sense should be ok for now
2

@Ghanima I might write up some sort of meta post later about what I think we should aim to be as a community, and you're definitely right about 'be nice'.

@Aurora0001 yep trying to be a community is key, I am looking forward to many interesting encounters during this phase of community building ;)

@Ghanima indeed, what people say about this being the critical time is completely right; anything bad that we don't discourage now will just become 'site culture', so speaking up is best it seems

12:15 PM
@Aurora0001 if you encouter issues that you feel are not properly tended and are a serious matter that could not be resolved in meta, comments, or chat just drop me a line and I will take it to the moderators chat room for discussion with the staff team

@Ghanima will do, thanks a lot!

@Aurora0001 I did, It is possible he meant my comment and I deleted it myself.

@Helmar I thought yours was ok to be honest

@Aurora0001 Me too, but people consider different things to be snarky and it was not that helpful. So I decided to err on the side of caution.

@Helmar Fair enough, I suppose there's a balance to strike
Stamping out any comment that isn't exactly within the definition of a comment will just frustrate people, but leaving obvious snark is also bad

12:23 PM
@Aurora0001 obviously escalation is only advised for serious trouble (which I do not really expect in private beta). As part of community building and community moderation we shall try (and will succeed) to resolve most issues by ourselfes

@Ghanima indeed, that's why I'm not too concerned about the comments on that post - no point wasting SE employee time for something trivial that isn't really terrible

1:09 PM
I caught my first case of plagiarism!
-1
A: Could IoT devices be monitored (real time) while on a plane?

Dilip Kumar YadavThere are types of WIFI on planes( some are US in only ) 1) Air-To-Ground (ATG) - delivers peak speeds of 3.1Mbps, using cellular-based technologies. In fact I've caught a serial plagiariser

@Ghanima you here?

yepp
I take it the poster will edit accordingly, that's what his comment suggests

He just moved around his points and didn't actually add attribution
I'm going to try and tell him to do that
and if not the mods can deal with it

plagiarism warrants a moderator flag, that's right.

Q: What to do when plagiarism is discovered

PëkkaHow should I act if I discover a user plagiarizing fellow users' posts? What if I find someone plagiarizing external resources without attribution? See also: Users are calling me a plagiarist. What do I do? Return to FAQ index

Already done but if he edits to add attribution I'll retract
That's what I meant by that (although it probably wasn't clear) - if he doesn't edit, I won't retract the flags and the moderators will see them

jepp

1:25 PM
that's not the same user replying!

@Aurora0001 Exactly what I was noticing.

weird

It could be a dupe account.

Could just be a confused user

Well I suppose multiple accounts are allowed (unless you're trying to give fraudulent votes or evade bans)

1:26 PM
@Aurora0001 Yes, you're right on there.

The account hasn't voted yet, or done anything for that matter.

They're not encouraged; it creates confusion, but they're not illegal either.

Kudos for catching that plagiarism @Aurora0001
@anonymous2 They are if they vote for each other or act as positive echo chamber in the comments for each other.

@Helmar thanks, something just seemed odd when I read the answer and a quick google revealed the truth
also one of the answers has been edited appropriately, which is good

@Helmar Yes, but even at that point, it's not the accounts that are illegal; it's how they are being used.

1:29 PM
Currently the dupe account hasn't actually done anything, so there really is nothing illegal going on yet.

@anonymous2 Ok, that's true

no, but it might be wise to keep an eye on that now that we're aware of the situation

TBH, there are a couple sites that I have dupe accounts on just because I sign in with different browsers which each have different e-mail accounts associated. I keep meaning to merge them, but keep not getting around to it.
@Ghanima True, that.

There are even reasons to have sock puppets. To find out what the site looks like with less reputation, to provide screenshots that don't provide high-rep or moderator information, et cetera...
4
It's weird to have VLQ review queue access and see it completely empty. Empty as in there has not been a single entry yet.

1:35 PM
Okaaayyy.... that's the fellow who proposed IoT.

I just realized that I don't necessarily need to suggest edits in comments anymore :)

0_0

@Helmar Lol. Yep, that's what happens when you get too much rep.
You don't get to suggest edits in comments.
You have to implement them yourself.

@anonymous2 Double-edged blade :)

wow... I got the Citizen Patrol badge even though I retracted the flag

1:38 PM
yeah, 1335 reviews, only two more to go

That's right! Actually, you got the badge, then you retracted your flag.

@Aurora0001 you should not have said that ;)

And badges are permanent, even if the cause for the badge is removed.
2

Yeah, just a bit of an oddity
I would have thought the requirement would be 'raise 1 helpful flag' instead

I'll admit. :)

@Aurora0001 It should have been.

Ok, other account plagiarizes too

A: Could IoT devices be monitored (real time) while on a plane?

@anonymous2 I doubt it will ever change then
How much do you want to bet as soon as that account gets voting privileges there will be some voting fraud?

1:42 PM
@Helmar I wonder where SE draws the line of plagiarism, what's the worth of answers that are only a full quote of another source

@Aurora0001 It already has voting privs.

@Ghanima well, a quote answer is considered better than a link-only answer, so they can't be that bad

@Aurora0001 too bad we cannot check this w/o mod privileges, however there is some automatic vote fraud detection in place

Yeah, it's private beta, everyone can vote, even close vote from the beginning

1:43 PM
Oh, I didn't expect it to be a minimum of 1 rep
I thought you'd need at least 5 or something

@Helmar Wonder why they didn't set the set bounties priv to 1. ;)

@Aurora0001 Neither did I. I guessed it was my 100 association that gave that privilege, but it wasn't.

The serial voting script will pick things up I'm sure

@Aurora0001 yeah, but at some point it's maybe not just plagiarism but copyright infringement - and you Muricans tend to go crazy about such things

@Ghanima fortunately I'm not a Murican!
Anyway pretty sure it would be fair use if cited properly @Ghanima

1:45 PM
Post is gone

And... it's gone!

@Aurora0001 but SE is, it's their business to take care
and btw where are you from

Aaand there's my Citizen Patrol badge :)

@Ghanima UK

@anonymous2 I count that as community moderation is working

1:46 PM
@Helmar Me too!
@Ghanima Right.

Also "the fair use of a copyrighted work [...] for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright." under US law @Ghanima
4

I'm from murica.

And, so I'm not a plagiarist: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

@Aurora0001 plagiarism != copyright issues
after all you could plagiarise copyleft stuff

Well, (almost) all copyright infringement is plagiarism, but some plagiarism isn't copyright infringement

1:50 PM
@Aurora0001 Not necessarily I could totally infringe on copyright by selling bootleg DVDs while not claiming that I made the movie.

@Helmar True
Yay! First message with 3 stars! Congrats, @Aurora0001!

@Helmar fair point!
@anonymous2 thanks! 4 stars now!

@anonymous2 which again is violating our two stars rule
2

@Ghanima it was 2 lines though, so if we average the stars out, it's still 2 stars per line
2
so I count that as respecting the rule
Mind you... maybe not on a massive monitor

Oops, what about this one?

1:53 PM
Damn we are totally flooding that starboard. Which is usually bad for starboard, because then you'll sink.
2

What is the 2 star rule?
2

@10Replies everything gets 2 stars, no more

Something I started totally by accident.
2

It satisfies my mild OCD
2

And now all in the world of IoT chat is balanced again
Now that @anonymous2's message has 2 stars
So even star scores seem to be the trend now

1:56 PM
I just realized that my approving edits is not very useful right now

16 hours ago, by anonymous2
Finally a couple things starred that have something other than two stars. ;)

I'm the only user with that privilege. All the SE guys one click approve anyways

@Helmar do 'improve edit'
The community user will auto-approve if you improve every edit

@Aurora0001 true. And the reason why I realized only now. Because the one I improve edited went into effect immediately.

It's always seemed odd to me that you can essentially bypass the suggested edits review if you improve/reject and edit

1:59 PM
@Aurora0001 Well it's more effort and on a site where enough reviewers are there the accumulated efforts for two people hitting one button might be less.
2

@Helmar true but you could, in theory, trivially edit 1 character and then bypass the queue completely (until you get spotted!)

we're watching you
2

Woo! I have my first 'Nice Question' badge on the network
(not because I'm bad at asking questions, but because I don't tend to ask them on other sites!)

@Aurora0001 (What you guys don't know is that I set up a bot that automatically stars anything that gets one star.)
JK, BTW. :)
@Aurora0001 Congratulations!

@anonymous2 as long as no-one goes in and stars all the 2 stars to make them 3 star

2:04 PM
@Aurora0001 Congrats
2

if so, someone needs to remove their star

@Aurora0001 what person would do such a thing!?
2

Right, first law of star-dynamics. The overall star density has to remain constant.
2

Anyone who looks at our starred page will think this is an experienced chatroom that has been around for a while. ;)

Mostly stars

2:08 PM
@Aurora0001 Stars and Stripes forever!

That was close, for a moment there that one post had only one star.

You folks do know that there is a daily star limit, right?
@Helmar I was about to star it, but while I was going, someone else hit it.

@anonymous2 you're kidding, right?

@anonymous2 then it's my goal to hit it every day
1
Q: Can we increase the limit of chat stars available per day?

fredleyIt's 15:39 and I've already used up my star allowance for the day. This is a regular occurrence. Why is the star limit set at what it is? Could this limit be raised to a slightly larger, yet still reasonable value?

@Aurora0001 Oops, right on. Thanks.
Was just digging it out.

2:10 PM
"To answer the question in the title, yes. This limit was implemented in direct response to the behaviour of a few people. – Tim Stone"

@Aurora0001 interesting

Definitely not any of us right?

@Aurora0001 definitely!

4
A: How many messages can I star? Is there any rate limiting?

Tim StonePer the FAQ, you're limited to 20 stars per room, per day and there's no cumulative limit. As a history lesson, there used to not be any upper limit on the number of stars you could cast. However, after a select group of Tavernfolk proved that they couldn't control themselves, Michael Mrozek did...

user223506
@Aurora0001 you'll probably be happy to know that i have requested deletion of my account here

2:13 PM
@Nullarbor quite the opposite, I wish we could do something to stop you!

@Nullarbor can we somehow talk you out of this?

@anonymous2 we'll simply have to abandon the room then once we run out of stars

Move over to chat of things. :)

Exactly just create new rooms
New rooms means a new contingent of stars

2:31 PM
Considering the few questions I'll have a look at the ones from definition. There might be some from users who never committed.

@Helmar I had a look at some and frankly a lot of them are too broad to be much good

@Aurora0001 Yeah, I think that'll be often the case. My own question had a placeholder which I currently cannot properly fill to make it an actual question.

Also perhaps this chat's name could be a pun on the star topology, since we seem to have plenty of stars to give out

Anyone spotting the English version?

Don't think there is one

2:43 PM
Right click and hit translate to English. :)

@anonymous2 Yeah but that's the link in the new question ;)

You could always link to Google Translate's version

@Aurora0001 How about star of things? ;)
4

Which question are we talking about?

Hi @Goufalite

@Goufalite it would be great if you could find an English version of the device page you linked. I guess it's technical enough that the language hardly matters but English is mostly preferred and might also solicit better answers.
Aurora suggest a similar link that might fit your purpose.

3:08 PM
Hmm, no one with the Tumbleweed yet. ;)

@anonymous2 A disaster. I am also dismayed at the emptiness in the late answer queue ;)

@anonymous2 yeah, every post has some score
either very negative or very positive

yeah, I cannot stand votes > 3

Still, wait until the privilege requirements go up

which is much where I come from

3:10 PM
Then voting will go down

@Aurora0001 Yep. There's one that's at zero, but it's 4 up 4 down. :)

Which evil person made @anonymous2's message 3 star?
It's fixed!

@Aurora0001 This is not good...
@Aurora0001 Oh, you're right.
What is it, multiples of two?

@anonymous2 looks like it

At this rate, the Outspoken badge shouldn't be too far away... ;)

3:13 PM
2 stars = good message
4 stars = excellent message

1 star = ?
3 star = ???

We don't speak about odd numbers here

ahhhhh!

@Ghanima, do you know tlhIngan?
From RaspPi.

I've seen some of his activities, he's not much in chat though
nobody is much in chat there though

3:16 PM
No, I've noticed.

last active phase was during mod elections
that's almost a year ago

@Ghanima Having them again soon?

it's not actually a secret but yeah, we're supposed to be scheduled for another election

December 22
The last ones, that is.

preaching seems to be important in your life, you've got it twice in your list

3:33 PM
@Ghanima Lol, it is, but that's an oversight. Thanks for pointing out!
Try that. :)

@anonymous2 well it has to be 10 different users doing the starring, but yeah if this tradition continues those badges will be coming in shortly :)

we're two people short or something like that

@Helmar We just need to 'recruit' some extra star-giving users

yepp, go about recruiting some

And recruiting for the main site would be good too

3:36 PM
Astronomy.SE, they know stars
4

@Helmar that's the kind of posts that gets us closer to that daily limit!

Needs another star

I did what I could

You have to use some reverse psychology, though. You know, say something like:
"You have won the prize for being the first person to post an answer after 5am today. As a reward, you get to choose the ten best posts in chat and star them."
2

I totally saw that my one post had three stars and someone retracted!

3:41 PM
I had to... the stars were not even

True enough :)

@Aurora0001 are they base 2 ?

Anyways I am split about the alexa tag. Should it be amazon-alexa?
2
Q: Making Amazon Echo / Alexa work outside of US, UK, Germany and Canada

CoomieAccording to Amazon Echo's Wikipedia page, they're only available in the US, UK, Germany and Canada. @Helmar In a word: yes
so fits nicely
Also @Helmar any chance you could nuke and replace it with since you have edit privileges? You might need to remove then readd in a separate edit to get around the pluralisation filter

@Aurora0001 Hm, will that work?

3:43 PM
Probably

I mean the tag still exists until it's deleted at night

@Helmar oh yeah, you're right

@Helmar Someone tried to reply, but hit the star instead.
I know. I've done it a zillion times. ;)

Also it's three questions I'd have to edit and re-edit

@anonymous2 That may have been me

3:44 PM
If there's a single question singular tag that should be plural I would try

@Helmar You're right though, it won't work

@Aurora0001 No worries... ;)

@Aurora0001 Ok, then it's up to the SE mods

@Aurora0001 No, you need mod privs for that.

If I knew exactly when the roomba runs I could do it :D

3:46 PM
@Helmar is the highest on the site so far, but he's not quite that high. :)

@anonymous2 I thought for a second that the filter wouldn't notice if you just edited out the tag first, then readded a new one. Then I remembered that you can't add the tag at all, it's not just renaming tags that it stops
You could always just edit them out for a day - it's not like the world will end :P

@Helmar Say, actually, you're half-way up to the mod privs.

Well, you're right, I didn't realize that the 10k tools are so close

They're 1k tools, lol.

However there are simply not enough questions to answer to go 200 a day :/

3:49 PM
Let's get out and make them!

@Helmar you can always try asking some questions like I'm trying
2
It's not exactly a high-rep operation though with +5 per upvote compared to answers
Self-answering works though I suppose

@Aurora0001 Yeah I know. I totally intend to ask a question today. Somewhere between work and starring stuff.
3

@Aurora0001 The goal can't really be the rep right now, though. The goal has to be getting the site off the ground.

@anonymous2 but I love rep!

Which means asking and answering good questions and giving away lots of rep.
@Aurora0001 So do I. And that's the point.
Everyone does. So we have to give it away if we're going to keep everyone here and attract the new everyone here.

3:51 PM
Still, I've tried to be positive on IoT
only 2 downvotes

@anonymous2 Yeah, people gotta vote. But I went vox populi on day one and there actually isn't that much new I could up vote today

@Helmar well then lets hit the star-limit to get you started
3

I hit the star rate limit of 1 per second...
that counts right?

4:12 PM
Hello Everybody! :) How are things?

howdy

Hi @HenryWHHackv2.0

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Things? Connected hopefully :)

Ok, this one is certainly to test the scope

Q: How to handle this major pitfall when updating my "non-filesystem flash memory IoT device" over the air?

HelmarScenario I want to update a low cost IoT device over the air with new firmware updating the device's microcontroller(s). Microcontroller memory is flash memory in the 32k to 128k range (every cent counts). This cheap memory has one major limitation: It can only be erased block-wise. Question D...

4:17 PM
Guess what
"You have fully used your vote allowance for today"
2
for stars
Also, I've just tried to retract a star from one of the 3 star messages:
"It is too late to undo this operation"

@Aurora0001 Nooo....

But there's so much left to star...

@Aurora0001 then at least you can finally go write some new questions!

@Ghanima I'm slowly forming a question that might work
something about low-power cryptography
But the issue is it could easily creep into a shopping question if I'm not careful
Also @Helmar add to the list of questions that need pluralising

@Aurora0001 I know I was cringing when I added it to my question :(

4:23 PM
what's this plurals thing anyways? I am not completely conviced, e.g. wrt microcontroller

It only takes 1 question and then the pluralisation filter kicks in...

next you want "flash-memories" instead of "flash-memory"?

They should disable it for the private beta at least
@Ghanima my rule is this: the tag should satisfy the sentence "this question is about _____"
e.g. "this question is about flash memory" is ok

hmm

"this question is about microcontroller" - nope

4:24 PM
duly noted
oh boy, I hate typos and I hate the 6 characters edit rule
3

Funny how wording affects posts so much.
@Ghanima I don't care how many stars that one gets, that's just true!
2

@Ghanima makes sense in some cases if it has to go through the suggested edits queue

@Helmar I didn't know that Industry 4.0 is a "German" invention

it's just frustrating when you're used to clicking 'edit', correcting then bam - it's done

@Aurora0001 yupp, that's the feeling

4:30 PM
@Aurora0001 I totally cited that in my edit now :)
@Ghanima We invented everything :)

@Helmar have an (invisible) star for that!

Ok not everything but that word we did invent ;)

@Helmar Blitzkrieg, Kindergarden, and now Industrie 4.0

@Ghanima That I'd call a positive development

kindof

4:32 PM
2 out of the 3 could end the world
I'll leave you to select which ones you think I mean

Yeah, my nightmares always are about toddlers going Blitzkrieg when I sleep ;)

Anyways that Industrie 4.0 report is actually quite a good read if you want some authoritative insight in what manufacturers see in the future.
Even though it's a few years old the industry as a whole does not move that fast and it's still very fitting to what's going on in the manufacturing sector.

@Helmar What's happening now was probably planned ~5-10 years ago :P

@Aurora0001 Mostly

Apart from things that couldn't have been predicted, of course

Helmar, we should have kept Industrie 4.0 to ourselves, let them have their own ideas to make Murica great again

Also, the side transcript is starting to look a bit crazy.
Including blitzkrieg, running out of stars, and how we all hate typos

you should not join The h Bar or Mos Eisley if that starts to trouble you

@Aurora0001 Isn't that a core quality of SE chats?

@Helmar I suppose so - better make IoT off-topic here!

Also I can't help but feel like every question I post has the answer buried somewhere inside already (mainly because I already know the answer in the process of researching the question)
Oh well, I suppose that's a good test of answerability.

@Aurora0001 ... and another star closer to the limit
which reminds me, are you not supposed to write up some questions?

@Ghanima What do you mean?
I'm in the process of writing one now if that's what you're asking

4:57 PM
@Aurora0001 you've used up your stars and we kind-of decided that this means you're now free to concentrate on questions ;)

@Ghanima give me 5 minutes then; it's on its way!
Also both variations of "it's"/"its" in one sentence - woo English grammar
