I was checking through the block list just now - it looks like Mirrodin or Kamigawa might be the time when MTG became less "let's print cards around a theme!" and more "let's tell a sort-of-epic story about some planes and their struggles, and print cards reflecting that!". Is that sort of accurate?
or was it like that all along?
(I'm under the impression that at least in the Masques block around 2000, cards were just themed, but blocks didn't have stories behind them)
That was just an example. The Mirage block has books set in it. I'm pretty sure the Invasion block is the story of the invasion of Dominaria by Phyrexia
@Rainbolt: Please do not use this chat for complaining about or belittling other site members. It is distinctly unpleasant, and not in compliance with our Be Nice policy.
@murgatroid99 Yeah, but then I visit the Masques block, and the salvation wiki page includes a quote saying they just chose a greek theme plus names people would have trouble spelling for laffs.
@doppelgreener I suspect that the truth is that sets like Arabian Nights and Mercadian Masques are the exceptions, and that most other blocks really do have a story
The following is a list of novels based in the setting of the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. When Wizards of the Coast was asked how the novels and cards influence each other, Brady Dommermuth, Magic's Creative Director, responded by saying "generally the cards provide the world in which the novels are set, and the novels sometimes provide characters represented on cards. But cards also introduce their own characters that might not appear in the novels. In short, the Magic creative team and the novelists work largely in parallel and inform each other as much as possible." All of novels...
@murgatroid99 I would. I thought they were only present in the Scars of Mirrodin block, so you saying that Invasion was about Phyrexia is pretty surprising.
@murgatroid99 Multiple!? I thought it was just about Zendikar and now the new Battle for Zendikar. Did it relate to something else too? (Was it related to Alara?)
Sorin Markov was lord of Innistrad (Innistrad block) and traveled to Tarkir to get Ugin's help sealing the Eldrazi
Gideon Jura traveled to Ravnica (RTR block) to get other help fighting the Eldrazi
The thing with Sorin was particularly important, because he caused a timeline shift, which caused FRF and DTK, which also caused Ugin to be alive to help with Zendikar
Storywise, I think that's why we're going back to Zendikar next: those who went off to get help against the Eldrazi have gotten it
Wizards frequently posts short stories related to the current block on their website (that's how I know the stuff about Sorin).
just finished going through the Phyrexia article. That is a lot of stuff those folks got involved in.
@murgatroid99 Oh right, I totally mindblanked on this. Of course. The entire plot of Khans of Tarkir revolves around Sorin and Surrak getting in touch with Ugin in the lead-up to the Battle for Zendikar.
@doppelgreener I wasn't belittling anyone. If Jefromi wants to pointlessly comment on my posts, I will complain about it in here all I want to. When he stops, I'll stop complaining.
Sorry that my complaints are more straightforward than most. Jefromi comments that he is "concerned". I'll tell you straight up that I am annoyed at his annoying behavior. It's the same thing.
Also, I wish you would stop quoting policy to me. It makes you look arrogant. I am extremely familiar with the site and it's policies.
I really think you are just trying to fan flames, because you know I have been here for a while.
Anyway, if complaining about Jefromi's commenting behavior outside of the comments on the main site is against the "Be Nice" policy, then surely you complaining about my behavior is also against that same policy. That makes you a hypocrite.
If you try to lecture me again, I'll just block you, because these back and forths between us are almost always unpleasant.
And if you find my messages unpleasant, you should do the same.
@Rainbolt I will quote you the policies as long as you violate them.
So, here's the thing: I won't block you. I want to be able to enjoy this room, and for it to be a safe place for the community to talk. It is, after all, our entire community's room.
Do come here and vent.
Just, don't belittle people. Like, Jefromi had a disagreement with you? Don't come here and complain about his behaviour. It sucks.
If you block me... that's up to you.
If you violate policy though, I'll flag for moderator attention. So keep your complaints restrained.
Jefromi should be able to enjoy this room too.
Note I don't use this as the room where I complain about what a toxic effect Rainbolt is having on the community.
Or, like, I don't do that anywhere. Ever. About anyone.
@Rainbolt And as for this: seriously, stop seeing arguments everywhere.
(I've probably lectured you now. Do whatever! I don't really care, it might even improve things for me with you not looking for arguments in things I say.)
@doppelgreener That is somewhat accurate, Kamigawa block is what MaRo considers the end of the 3rd stage of design, where they pick a theme like Artifacts or Legendary, and not necessarily towards more epic story lines, but better block planning so the story can follow the cards better.
@doppelgreener What a hypocrite. I sarcastically call Jefromi a mind reader, and I am "belittling" him. You call me toxic for the community, and you aren't belittling me? Why don't you follow your own advice?
Please, do so. I do not feel that it overstepped the bounds of what is considered acceptable.
I have invited Jefromi here before to discuss comments he has made on my posts before. He declines, so I stopped inviting him. Instead, he just continues to comment on the post. Meanwhile, I have been asked to stop entering into exteneded discussions with other users in the comments on the site and to take my longer discussions to a discussion room
Another user keeps commenting on my posts, and when I ask him to take the discussion to a room, he refuses. But he continues to comment on all of my posts repeatedly.
So I complained about his behavior in here and got called out for belittling him.
Hi. Background: I'm asking Rainbolt not to complain directly about site members who he is actively hostile toward (search posts containing Jefromi here, by Rainbolt).
I made that request here and it got met by disagreement.
This is already an hostile room at times.
(A lot of conflict. This site's members have not yet learned to get along easily.)
I don't see anything particularly offensive in the transcript. It looks like we have a couple of users who don't get along (Jefromi and Rainbolt) for whatever reason. Rainbolt has complained about it but, from my quick search, without actually being offensive at any point.
People have a right to not like each other. Fighting it out in the public chatroom is not very helpful but I don't see anything particularly egregious here.
> Rudeness and belittling language are not okay. Your tone should match the way you'd talk in person with someone you respect and whom you want to respect you. If you don't have time to say something politely, just leave it for someone who does.
> Be welcoming, be patient, and assume good intentions. Don't expect new users to know all the rules — they don't. And be patient while they learn. If you're here for help, make it as easy as possible for others to help you. Everyone here is volunteering, and no one responds well to demands for help.
(which is about new users, but I think the "be welcoming" thing extends to not driving individuals away from the community room by complaining about them.)
If you have a problem with any specific behavior that you observe, or a problem with some type of content that you see on the site, complaining/ranting about that is fine, and is even encouraged.
The line is when you start talking about specific users (and repeatedly too)
If you find yourself mentioning a user by name or linking to their profile, rethink your position, please.
Not because you may be wrong or right, but because ranting about a specific user never helps in any way
@MadaraUchiha That actually doesn't make that much sense. That means saying 'God I hate it when people do X', even when its obvious you're talking about one specific person, is fine, but simply adding their name is not.
Deal. Next time this user responds to a comment on main, I'll ask him to join a discussion room like I have been doing lately. If he refuses, I'll just leave it at that.
@Rainbolt Sounds great. You should also feel free to bring in your site's mods. Sometimes, people are just too pissed at each other. That's one of the things the mods can help with.
Which would you prefer? "I hate Indians because the speak in Hindi in our chat rooms" or "I hate it when people don't speak in English in our chat rooms"?
@MadaraUchiha Compared to saying "I hate it when people speak in Hindi in our chat rooms"? when its obvious that there's only been one person speaking Hindi in the chat room?
@Rainbolt That's fine - I get the same with others sometimes (not you, just so you don't wonder), just that the outlet should not be the very same public space they should be able to share in.
Alright. I will complain here about things I do not like, and I'll also speak about things I do like (like this bad boy), and as long as I don't mention anyone by name or use bad words, I don't expect to have any more meta posts thrown at me.
Wait
Confused now. So this conversation about behavior needs to be in main chat, but my complaints about behavior needs to be behind closed doors?
@Rainbolt If you would be gracious about it, thinly veiled passive-aggressiveness should also be avoided. The likes of which Waterseas was poking at - "I hate when people do X" when there is only one person who ever does X.
@Rainbolt I'm just saying this conversation we're having now shouldn't move to another room so we can keep it here and refer back to it if we ever need to.
@Rainbolt No. Nothing behind closed doors. The point is that ranting about other users is rarely, if ever useful. You can use a dedicated room to hash it out with the user in question and, with luck, reach an agreement.
Just don't bring your fights to the main room where the rest of the site's users will be subjected to them.
@terdon Well I mean like, if I have someone who's really pissed me off, I probably go to my private friend or housemate and unbottle so I can stop holding it in. Letting things out behind closed doors is healthy sometimes. (Very unhealthy at other times, as you may be describing.)
@doppelgreener Look, we've all complained about someone at some point. The problem here is that someone else felt uncomfortable and that is what we're trying to avoid.
And, obviously, it's hard for us to judge since we don't know the whole picture. For all I know, @Rainbolt was complaining about the worse troll on the interwebs. Or, again for all I know, @Rainbolt is the worst troll on the interwebs and is complaining about the most valuable user on the site.
@terdon Alright, yes, actually what I said was to deal with something I realise didn't need dealt with. (12:30am. Should sleep shortly. Not reading correctly.)
Earlier this year, Settlers of Catan was rebranded so that the name of the game is simply Catan. The expansions were similarly rebranded. For instance, Seafarers of Catan is now called Catan: Seafarers.
We have the tag settlers-of-catan, which is what all questions related to the game are tagge...
It is not a secret you've been in direct conflict with mods right on this site before. Your behaviour is not impeccable. Neither is mine, go ahead and quote meta posts at me when I need reminders.
@Thunderforge I actually did propose a tag synonym for catan, but so far nobody has voted for it (probably because very few people have enough rep in the tag)
I find it a bit frustrating that only a handful of users can vote for synonyms. I guess it makes sense for Stack Overflow, but for BG.SE, it really hinders us effectively using tags.
@Thunderforge I actually thought about voting for the synonym (because I can) but then I realized I would have to do this four more times and that maybe a mod should just do it
@Rainbolt That's excellent. My friends and I haven't yet worked out the right way to manage that. I guess having a partner on those terms helps you manage it c(:
@Waterseas I started as a red player in Dragons Maze, so when Ravnica Block rotated I tried to play red again. That meant collecting foil Swiftspears. I got six of them, and then they shot to $20
@Rainbolt I did a lot of speculating on Khans. Bought 20-30 Swiftspears at 50 cents each. Unfortunately should've speculated more on Swiftspears than a couple of my others.
For reference, our FNM's usually have about 12 people, so 12 people is like our entire standard group packing up and going to the tournament
Also funny: 90% of our players are banned from another store in town. We literally walk in, and if she recognizes us from Facebook because we have our picture on the Geek World page, she won't let us play there.
She lets me play for some odd reason. Maybe because I sweet talk her all the time
Anyway, half of the people are banned because they are too good. A few are banned because of profanity. A few are banned because they attempted to trade (trading is against the rules). A few are banned because they disagreed with her rulings (probably rudely).
She told me that I can't respond to Regenerate. She also ruled that if my Ugin wasn't on the field when his -X ability resolved, that it didn't happen (i.e., the source needs to be on the battlefield still)
The very next day, we get Freedbirds to sponsor our Prerelease Events on Saturday and Sunday. She calls Freebirds and says they it isn't fair that they are sponsoring only one store both days.
It's a fast food burrito place. She's also banned from every Chik Fil A in East Texas, every Chipotle in town, two churches, and a bunch of department stores.
There is a goldmine of good subjective questions that we could ask but I don't think would be well accepted unless that were asked in just the right language
