@TriG :D

@HodofHod It amused me, anyway.

@MonicaCellio Are you here?

@DoubleAA She's around. I was just talking to her in The Library.

@TRiG Thanks for the tip.
@TRiG And she just dropped out here and there.

2:48 AM
@DoubleAA Ah well.

2:58 AM
@DoubleAA hi, here now. I was in another room.
(where I think you were trying to draw my attention, actually :-) )

3:19 AM
Hey all
I was curious why "Mi Yodeya" was chosen for the site name heh

@Izzy That was actually it's SE 1.0 name, given by @IsaacMoses. It means "who knows?".

@MonicaCellio Why that question though, is it because of the "answer a question with a question" stereotype? :)

@Izzy I believe the inspiration was the Pesach haggadah, which encourages the asking of questions, and the song therein "echad mi yodeya" (who knows one... it goes up to thirteen).
@IsaacMoses yay, got it right. :-)

@MonicaCellio Yes. And the form of the song is throwing out a question to the assembled to see who has an answer, like at StackExchange
@Izzy My argument for keeping the name:
11
A: Name of judaism.stackexchange.com

Isaac Moses(OK, let's make this a little more formal. Community-wikifying for anyone who wants to add advantages.) I nominate mi.yodeya as the brand name for this site. Advantages: Most (to date) of the content on this site came from a site with that name. Multiple mi.yodeya users and fans have approach...

... which is mostly inside baseball, I see now. It really boils down to the song, and the fact that it's a Hebrew phrase that's widely recognized, thanks to its appearance in the Hagada

3:47 AM
@DoubleAA Save it for your answer to the question :)

4:14 AM
Oh my other question is where is the wiki?

@Izzy What wiki?

@IsaacMoses The "community wiki"
I keep seeing references to it

@Izzy "Community wiki" just means that a question or answer has gone from being ascribed primarily to the original author to being ascribed primarily to the community. See: judaism.stackexchange.com/privileges/edit-community-wiki

Q: A new search engine for Stack Exchange

Nick CraverAfter the performance problems we have run into with Lucene.NET we've decided to make a change, we're moving the network on to elasticsearch. The test screen is a little hidden at the moment until we swap all search over, but here's a link to get there. Note that searches via the top box will ki...

^^^ If you've ever tried the search box on Mi Yodeya, you'll know that this is a big deal.
If you gave up on the search box because it was unusable to your Google-spoiled fingers, try it now. Eizeh mechayeh!

@IsaacMoses Indeed. Thanks for the link.

@msh210 Happy to spread the joy.

Incidentally, @IsaacMoses, you were missed tonight.

@msh210 Where? The school thing?
I'll be at the one tomorrow morning.

@IsaacMoses Fair enough.
@IsaacMoses Yeah.

6:09 AM
@msh210 How was it?

@IsaacMoses Informative.

(We can take this offline if you prefer.)
@msh210 Anything particularly interesting?

@IsaacMoses I don't care. We can if you prefer, though.

@msh210 Me neither, unless you have community gossip to dish. :)

@IsaacMoses Probably nothing you don't know by other channels. Some things, in no particular order: 1) All communication will be to the board, and thence to the community (nothing directly to the public from the consultant).
2) Within the next 7-10 days they plan to determine whether financial viability is even possible or if, OTOH, this is a waste of time and they will be cutting it short.
3) The process usually takes 6-8 months but they're hoping for 4-6 because the school's in crisis mode.

6:13 AM
@msh210 Woah. It'd seem that in that case, more advice would be needed.

@IsaacMoses Well, the advice would then be "sell off your property and shut down". Pretty simple, I think.

@msh210 Just curious: whose words are "crisis mode"?

@IsaacMoses "Mode" is mine I think. "Crisis" is Andy's I think.

@msh210 OK; thanks.

4) The Strategic Planning Committee (which will develop the school's Vision -- what will the school look like in 3-5years -- and Strategic Plan) will comprise 8-10 people. The board will choose them, but the consultant will have (it sounds like heavy) advisory input into the choosing. Anyone who wishes to be involved -- on that committee or not -- should contact Andy. or the consultant, but he'll forward it to Andy.
Incidentally, "strategic plan" grates on my ears every. single. time I hear it.
Every plan is strategic. That's what a plan is.

6:17 AM
@msh210 What about a tactical plan?

@IsaacMoses Isn't tactics just strategy in the small?
EL&U person @MonicaCellio, what do you think?
@IsaacMoses 5) Expanding to include high school is most likely a terrible idea, but of course nothing is off the table yet.

@msh210 I have no idea how that could possibly be a strategy for saving the elementary school

6) The first step is data collection via surveys, interviews, and the like, from all over the community; next, assemble a Strategic Planning Committee.

@msh210 My understanding is that tactics and strategy are roughly opposites, with the former meaning, roughly, "near-term," and the latter, "long-term"

@IsaacMoses Nor I. Moreover, he said that in most elementary-cum-high schools, the high school drains money from the money-making elementary, so it'd be against the school's interest.
@IsaacMoses I suppose so. I thought tactics is near-term strategy.

6:27 AM
@msh210 thanks for the synopsis. Were there any interesting reactions from the assembled?

@IsaacMoses Not really. Most or even all of what I posted above was said in reply to questions from the audience, but no interesting reactions (i.e. besides questions).

@msh210 OK. I'll take that as a good sign.
@msh210 In that case, I appreciate the synopsis even more, since not all of the same questions may get asked at the next event.
@msh210 Alright, gotta take care of some stuff before it's really late. Thanks again, and Shavua' Tov.

@IsaacMoses Welcs, and shavua tov to you & yours.
@IsaacMoses If anything interesting gets covered there that I haven't mentioned, I'd appreciate knowing. :-)
@Izzy hi :-)

hey

6:43 AM
@IsaacMoses I assume it has to do with the unique real-estate and thereby financial relationship they have which other cases don't have to contend with. That obviously doesn't conclude the matter at all, just why it might be different.

8:06 AM
@DoubleAA Interesting point, but as you indicate, far from conclusive.
@msh210 It's a deal, though not necessarily in this forum.

A: What's the difference between the adjectives "strategic" and "tactical"?

Monica CellioTactics address immediate needs; strategy addresses long-term ones. Somtimes it is worth taking a loss in the short term (what would seem like bad tactics) for long-term strategic advantage. The terms are used with regard to the military but are broader: business, games, financial planning, etc...

@IsaacMoses that's great news! The OR default in particular was forever throwing me.

6:43 PM
@MonicaCellio Looks like he asked the right person :)

7:02 PM
@IsaacMoses It's Stack Exchange; he asked and decided that one of the answerers was right. :-)

7:24 PM
@MonicaCellio I mean, @msh210 pinged the right person here

7:42 PM
@IsaacMoses Oh! Yeah, as it turns out.

Q: Answers - When is a source required?

pzkdDisclaimer: Sources are extremely important in Judaism, as (almost) every Halacha, or Minhag (custom) has a clear source. Additionally, Judaism places sources and tradition so high, that it is considered fundamental. The question below, is only discussing the purpose and definition of this site...
