If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason. - Deep Thoughts, by Jack Handey

A big part of scaling up an engineering team is getting serious about monitoring and alerts. A good monitoring system collects data from all of your various systems — for example, how fast pages are loading, or server CPU usage, or emails being sent — and alerts you when something isn’t working correctly. When everything works perfectly you can sleep easy at night knowing that you’ll get an alert if something isn’t working correctly. …

@MonicaCellio I just tried again, and it appears that it's still not working....I think I'll suggest an edit to the tag wiki excerpt so that it includes the word "akeidah" -- that should do it.

@Shokhet how bizarre. And it still works for me. Just to confirm, you're going to the "tags" link and searching for "akei" and not getting "akeidat-yitzchak" (which is, in turn, a synonym for "binding-of-isaac")?
Or are you doing this in the tags section of a question?
If those behave differently I'll be sad. :-(

@MonicaCellio In the tags section of a question.
Same bug that msh210 posted on Meta a while back

@Shokhet aha. I thought you were doing tag searches, hence my confusion.
I just checked and that doesn't work for me either. So msh210's bug is still a bug, it appears.

Yup. Is there any way to get more attention on that?

Got the link handy?

Q: autocomplete tag synonyms

msh210When retagging (or asking) a question on the main site, you can type in tag names, and they will autocomplete for you. That used to work with synonyms also (for example, I'd type in diaspor, and chutz-laaretz would come up). Now, it works only if I type in the entire synonym (e.g. diaspora). Can...

(I think)

YeZ
When I click on "show 4 more" by the starred comments sidebar, I can't see the 4 more because I don't have a scroll-down sidebar. Solutions?

@YeZ I have the same problem, actually. Also looking for a solution.

@Shokhet that looks right. You could update the question with the new sighting (to provide another test case), and also point out that the behavior is different for tag search in questions and on the tags list. That edit will bump the post. I'll also see if I can turn up someone to take a look at it.

YeZ
@Shokhet I suppose you starred my request, then. (Thus pushing the older starred comments even further out of my window. Grr!)

@YeZ there's a user script for that, I think one of HodofHod's. I don't have it installed here at work, but check his github repository.

7:41 PM
@MonicaCellio Thanks

The user script adds a scrollbar to the right-side pain (at the cost of that little sliver of screen real-estate all the way down).

@YeZ :-P

When somebody finds it, drop a link in here and star that. :-)

@MonicaCellio Here are github repositories for one user named "HodofHod": github.com/HodofHod?tab=repositories
I'm not sure where in those repositories that userscript will be found.
Here are his SE modifications: github.com/HodofHod/SE-Modifications

Q: "show X more" (starred) in chat is a tease

Shawn ChinIn chat, when clicking on the "show X more" link to show more recently starred messages, the new entries are added beyond the exiting view and are tucked away under the footer. The scrollbar is useless in this case since it only scrolls the chat section. So how do I get at the messages? (See a...

7:45 PM
@MonicaCellio Probably the one called "ChatMods": github.com/HodofHod/SE-Modifications/blob/master/…
@Shokhet Yeah, that's the one: "//Makes the lower starred messages in SE chat rooms accessible."

YeZ
@HodofHod Want to post an answer there? ^^^

@Shokhet that's it.

I just haven't spent the time on figuring out how userscripts work, yet....otherwise I would be using the MY referencer ;-)

The MY referencer is excellent -- well worth the small cost to download and install GreaseMonkey and then follow Hod's instructions to install his scripts. You should be up and running in <10 minutes.

@MonicaCellio <10 minutes? Nice! ....I might try that later today.

7:56 PM
Do it now! You won't regret it. :-)
What browser are you using?

Chrome

YeZ
@Shokhet Pardon my ignorance, but what is the MY referencer?

@Shokhet ok, for Chrome I think you actually need Greasemonkey's cousin Tampermonkey:

YeZ
By the way, anyone who downvoted this because they thought the question was pushing an agenda, perhaps the acceptance of the answer implies otherwise?

It used to be that you could just drop a user script into Chrome and it'd work, but more recently Google has gotten security-conscious so you need that add-on.
@YeZ I downvoted because he asserted that his source is well-known and credible. If he'd just asked the question without the assertion ("I've heard this; is it true?"), I would have instead upvoted.
(Mind, the premise is still wrong -- you can't practice Islam and Judaism at the same time because they conflict -- but it would still be a reasonable question, since there are people who do think they're compatible.)

YeZ
8:03 PM
@MonicaCellio I though it was a poor question, and voted to close, but I didn't think it deserved -8. But I don't know if it's his(?) fault for not knowing what constitutes well-known and credible, when he(?) seems to be an outsider.

@YeZ the same person (but different SE user) asked an earlier question drawing from the same source, where there were many comments about the (lack of) quality of said source, so I think some of the DVs are because this is #2 with no apparent learning from #1.
This one: judaism.stackexchange.com/q/48111/472 (which I did not DV, by the way)

YeZ
@MonicaCellio hmm. Sounds reasonable.

@MonicaCellio I'll look into it, thanks!

Q: Mi Yodeya Referencer: A Syntax for Linking to Sources

HodofHodSeveral times, the community has discussed and requested an easier way to link to sources. So recently, with the help of Hashem yisborach, and @Menachem, I threw together a quick script to do just that. It links to Tanach and most of Talmud Bavli, and with the help of the community, we've added ...

8:24 PM
@HodofHod I just went to get the link for that, no fair!

YeZ
@HodofHod Neato! Do you know if it works without the "small cost" @MonicaCellio referred to?

@YeZ Unfortunately not. :( It used top be possible on chrome, but they changed it. The small cost is just installing a browser extension first.

@HodofHod @YeZ Tampermonkey that @MonicaCellio linked to above is free....

Tampermonkey has been benign in my experience. Once it's in there you then install Hod's scripts and you're good to go -- MY Referencer magic and scrollbars for the chat starwall.

@Shokhet Right. It's not a monetary cost.

YeZ
8:26 PM
@HodofHod oh so what's the cost?
They aren't gonna come for my first-born or anything are they?

@YeZ Only the overhead of having to install an extra extension.
@YeZ Yeah, but only at yovel
So you've got time.

YeZ
@HodofHod overhead = memory?

@YeZ overhead = annoyance, complexity, wtvr. Not much of a memory overhead.

YeZ
<--- (largely) computer illiterate.

Yeah, all you need to do is install one free extension not known to have problems, then install the script. It'll just take a few minutes.
I haven't noticed Chrome running any more slowly because I have this installed, if that's what you're worried about.
On any page that's not Mi Yodeya (or chat for the other script), nothing changes at all -- the script knows what sites it applies to and is completely invisible when you're not on those.

YeZ
8:29 PM
@MonicaCellio No I am just worried about my chemdas mammon. Should I be worried that it can "read and change all your data on the websites you visit"?

I don't have the time right this moment, but I'll definitely try to set it up tonight. TZT all, and thanks for the help!

@MonicaCellio The memory overhead is negligible, and shouldn't cause any slowdown

YeZ
(it being tampermonkey, not MY Referencer)

@YeZ ah, that's a warning on the add-on page (or in the download)? The issue is that the add-on is just a platform. Think of it like a computer that you buy. Somebody can program it to do good things or bad things; they're warning you that you still need to trust the scripts you install. I trust Hod, and I also reviewed the source code.
@HodofHod agreed. I was responding to a concern, not raising one.

YeZ
@MonicaCellio So the extension itself doesn't do that then.

8:32 PM
@YeZ It could.....but it shouldn't ;-)

YeZ
@Shokhet I get very worried about these things.
OK maybe let's back up a step. What does it mean that it can "change all your data on the websites you visit"?

@YeZ Tampermonkey itself just allows you to add user scripts -- that is, little blobs of JavaScript written by anybody who cares to do so -- that will be automatically plugged into the web sites they apply to. Tampermonkey itself is blind to that; it'll run what you tell it to run. If you tell it to plug in the MY Referencer, it'll run it on Mi Yodeya pages. If you tell it to plug in some evil script that messes with your banking site, it'll do that. But you wouldn't do that. :-)

@YeZ It means that Chrome allows Tampermonkey to modify the pages you visit. Tampermonkey requires that permission from Chrome in order to run userscripts.

@YeZ a user script can move things around on a web page, add or remove elements, pre-fill forms, and stuff like that. One can imagine malicious uses for that -- but, in order for the attack to work, the person doing it needs to get you to install a user script for which the source code is public.

YeZ
@MonicaCellio ok so it won't be making any credit card purchases on my behalf then.
OK sounds good.

8:36 PM
@YeZ not unless you install this script I have right here... :-)
(j/k - I don't know how to write that.)

@MonicaCellio I'm on it!
:P

YeZ
Wow that took 8 seconds and it's super cool.

I'm glad to see you being cautious; too many people aren't, online. You should always satisfy yourself that anything you install or enable is safe. Some people do that by reading the source code (if they can), some by only taking stuff from trusted sources, some by waiting until something's been out for a while without reports of problems... I realize that in this case you're just taking our word for it.
@YeZ go forth and reference lots of sources! :-) (Or did you mean the chat one?)

YeZ
@MonicaCellio I did the referencer.

@YeZ I find the referencer very usefu -- a great time-saver.

YeZ
8:41 PM
@MonicaCellio I'd post a post with lots of random references, but it'd probably get downvoted and then deleted.
@MonicaCellio I imagine there is a learning curve for those less programming-savvy.

@YeZ I've tried to make it a small one. If there's anything you think can be improved, I always love suggestions and feedback! :D
@MonicaCellio Random Q: Have you heard anything about the "broken links" reviewing tool in TL?

@HodofHod I sometimes manage to forget the syntax for some things -- yes it's not complicated but the memory, well, sometimes is leaky. So I sometimes have to go looking for the meta post with the documentation to remind myself. Any way to drop help into that? Like, maybe if I just type [h] I get a link to the doc?
@HodofHod sorry, remind me -- "broken links" reviewing tool? Was somebody talking about something that could be run over a site or something to find dead links?

@MonicaCellio That's a fantastic idea. Let me think about how to do that.
@MonicaCellio Yeah. It was mentioned a long time ago but never got past a small trial on SO, I guess.

YeZ
@HodofHod Is it auto-updated? I assume not.

@YeZ It is. Tampermonkey does that.

YeZ
8:49 PM
@HodofHod Oh that tampering monkey, he is good.

@MonicaCellio What do you think of some kind of auto-popup or overlay if you type [h] or [help]?
(with the docs right there)

YeZ
^^^ did that with my new pet monkey.

@MonicaCellio Also, what parts of the syntax have you found hard to remember?

@HodofHod oh that'd be cool! I figured that would be harder since you'd need to be able to position it on the page, but if you can save me an "open link in new window" that'd be nice.
@HodofHod I sometimes forget how to choose Chabad vs Mechon Mamre for Tanakh, and sometimes the option for "use the text as I typed it instead of changing transliteration on me". Once I remember being tripped up by a verse range that spanned a chapter boundary but I no longer remember the exact problem (what I typed, what didn't work about it).
I use it for tanakh and talmud citations; I know it can do tons more with sources I'm not already fluent in, so I'm just not going to be reaching for those references yet. So my little corner of the MY Referencer world revolves around t, g, and their options.
@HodofHod this is the most-current documentation, right?

9:04 PM
@MonicaCellio Yep.
(I think it's got all the info, but either way, it's the one kept most updated)

@HodofHod great, thanks.

9:25 PM
@MonicaCellio Quick test of a help panel. I'll add a link at the top to open it a new tab, and a close button, obviously.

9:47 PM
@HodofHod nice! Can you make it movable, for those of us who don't make the browser that wide? (My tablet is only 1024 wide, for instance, so when I'm using that I think most of that would be off-screen -- no big deal if I can grab and move it, but more of a pain if I have to scroll horizontally.)

@MonicaCellio It'll always be on-screen, it would just end up covering most of the page. I'll get you a tablet screenshot momentarily.
and with 1.6 zoom:

@HodofHod ah, ok -- not bound to the right edge of the page but of the window. Good. (Not all web designers get that right...)

(That's a nexus 7, at 966x604)

Yeah, more will be covered in a smaller window -- can't be helped. But most of the time I expect that it's a one-use reminder and then you dismiss it.

@MonicaCellio Yep, "position:fixed" in CSS
Exactly.

9:55 PM
Looks good! I take it you've implemented it already (that's not just a mockup)? What service!

@MonicaCellio It's an html mockup. I'm still writing up the code to create it, shouldn't be hard.

@HodofHod it'd be nice to find a way to maintain that documentation in one place instead of three (meta, your github repo, and the script itself).
@HodofHod in addition to the full BNF, consider a couple terse examples up top just as reminders -- "t gen 1:1 lr = Mechon Mamre w/Rashi" and one for each of the other three scopes? Just a thought.
(With correct markup of course, but I didn't want the script to fire here in chat for that message!)

@MonicaCellio Yeah. I think, the best place to keep it is on GitHub, with the script itself.
@MonicaCellio Sounds like a good idea.

@HodofHod makes sense. Your script can presumably fetch it from GitHub and display it. Once it's built into the script it's less important to maintain another copy on meta. (Meta should still describe what it covers, to entice people to download and install it, but it doesn't need to be the reference documentation at that point.)

10:42 PM
looking through the code to add the help function....
...geeze I wrote this junk?

10:58 PM
laugh I've had moments like that.

Yep. I think when I was first writing this I was worried about its size (I think I was worried about making people download a 100kb file for every update) but now that its done transparently and updated in the background, I really need to do a lot of rewriting to make it clearer - even to myself.

11:16 PM
Remember that when you're writing code you're writing for someone else eventually, including you six months later. :-)

11:35 PM
@HodofHod I've installed Tampermonkey and the userscript....now reading the Meta post to figure out how it works. It looks very impressive!
Also, took a lot less time to set up than I thought it would -- that's what took so long ;-)
Also, I like your instructions for IE on your instructions page ;-)

:D

@HodofHod And I also installed the ChatMods script, which was what started this conversation in the first place ;-)
