Q: Being more stringent than your Rebbe

Gavriel Is there a problem with acting more stringently in halacha than your Rebbe acts? If so, what if you are not in front of your Rebbe? If so (to #1), is having a longer beard or peyos considered a problem? (Even if that's not a stringency, the reason behind not acting stringently in front of your R...

Q: Another "bully overflow"

CashCowYeah I know downvote downvote downvotes. But rep doesn't count here. Far from the Jewish spirit of welcoming in new people, guests, etc. you are bullying people with your downvote tactics. Where is the FAQ? Where does it say all my answer must have a rabbinic source? Who says there are black ...

@Meta-Man Man, people can really take a downvote seriously.

What is your question exactly? — Double AA ♦ 3 mins ago
^^^ Interesting point. This is certainly not the first Meta post whose point is to criticize MY. What is the standard for such posts being acceptable to keep open? Do they have to make a specific request for information/explanation or call for specific change? @DoubleAA

A: Another "bully overflow"

ScimonsterPeople's votes are their own. That is the official StackExchange position. Explaining downvotes is encouraged but not required. See also Why do you cast downvotes on answers? ... There are three questions in the post, but it's unclear if they're intended to be interrogative or rhetorical.

3:20 PM
@IsaacMoses They are rhetorical. Or at least, I don't think he wants a link to the FAQ. Meta is open to more open questions, but I don't even know what this is.

@DoubleAA What is stopping you from closing it? (not rhetorical)

@IsaacMoses What is stopping you from voting to close it?

@DoubleAA Hey, I'm the one asking the questions, buddy.

@IsaacMoses :)
My vote is decisive and I'd like to see a few community votes first to back me up so-to-speak

@DoubleAA Same as you, I assume, to see what the rest of the community thought first

@IsaacMoses You aren't binding though.
Perhaps this whole thread should be rewritten in faq form? — Double AA ♦ 9 secs ago

@DoubleAA Yeah. My hesitance is also because, as usual, enforcing our standards just plays into OP's narrative. So, I think that the standard should be enforced with a bit more caution.

@IsaacMoses I'm very skeptical that someone who posts a meta post like that will ever really fully integrate into the community no matter what we say.
@IsaacMoses Speaking of which, should I close this judaism.stackexchange.com/q/48706/759

@DoubleAA I feel like it's happened before. No example at my fingertips, though.

Q: Moderators purposely concealed my question from community discussion and to keep the masses blind

SSpokeI posted this question and it was swept under the rug with no definitive explanation given. I have had many questions in the post, so I don't see how it can be an invalid question. in Discussion between Isaac Moses and hazoriz, 1 min ago, by Isaac Moses
@hazoriz I would prefer if you didn't. If you want there to be a Q&A about that point of theory, it'd probably be better to word it with very hypothetical, non-graphic language, to make it clear that it's a theoretical question and less likely to have choice phrases quoted out of context.
^^^ I'd be interested to hear what others think about this (probably best in that room), since I'm of two minds about whether to recommend against posting even the theoretical version

.......Just wondering if "rep doesn't count here," what's the big deal about 4 downvotes between 5 posts? </הערה>
Am I right about this? ....
Hello Ryan, and welcome to Mi Yodeya! You raise a lot of questions in this post; you might want to clarify exactly what your question is -- generally, we like to have one question per post. — Shokhet 10 mins ago
Second comment I know I'm right about:
In point 0 -- one is not allowed to martyr themselves for Shabbos. If someone wants to do that, we force them to break Shabbos to preserve their life (Shmiras Shabbas K'Hilchasa, 32:5) — Shokhet 9 mins ago

where do we say explicitly that this is not a discussion forum? Is it on the FAQ? That seems to be a common point of misunderstanding, particularly in the current iteration of it.

... "This site is all about getting answers. It's not a discussion forum. There's no chit-chat."
@YeZ It's a natural point of misunderstanding because most other places on the Internet that allow people to come off the street and type are discussion forums.

YeZ
@CashCow I think the misunderstanding here is in what the point of this site is. It is not a "discussion forum" as you seem to have understood. It is not a blog. It is for asking questions and receiving answers to those questions, with clearly defined guidelines to keep the site functioning and not becoming a discussion forum. This is clearly stated in our Tour which hopefully every new user reads. — YeZ 31 secs ago

@IsaacMoses On (at least some) other meta SE sites, statements are okay as question posts, to some extent. cc @DoubleAA

Welcome to the 61st installment of the Stack Exchange Podcast, brought to you by okra (yes, that okra). On our show today are David Fullerton, Jay Hanlon, and Joel Spolsky. It’s been a long time since we last did a podcast, so let’s get started.

First point of business: we have an iPad app! It’s got a snazzier feed and a fancy live preview in the Compose view. We’ve been getting more posts from mobile than we expected, because computing via iPad is the way of the future (according to Joel), so lots of features in the iOS app are now better optimized for posting as opposed to reading. …

And congrats to me on finally reaching 10k on SO. :D

ShokhetAccording to the Gemara (Yoma 85a-b) and Poskim (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 328, Rambam, Hilchot Shabbos 2 [English Rambam]), one is allowed to violate Shabbos in order to preserve his life.
