Q: topic challenge: pets

msh210I propose pets as a weekly topic challenge. Pets present a number of halacha-related questions; specific aspects of (or circumstances that come with) pet ownership may present more. Then there are the historical questions, the philosophical questions, etc.

@HachamGabriel from where (other than me) did you hear about Rav BH?

@Vram never heard of him
It seems you are related?

@HachamGabriel not sure where you heard that one...

Tzvi Hirschberg; when he said you last name it is the same
(sorry for the messed grammar there)

he said my last name is BH??
interesting...

Yes, and that's all he said. I was in a hurry.

4:14 AM
Rav BH's kid was in my class in HS

So I'm guessing you aren't related.

Q: Bli Neder Loophole

NaftaliWho came up with the Bli Neder loophole of: Bli neder I will help you do X Or Bli neder I will etc... And the list can go on and on. Who came up with addingBli Neder which basically means "Without a promise" to things that seem like promises?! Does that remove one from the obligatio...

@Neal I'm guessing there's an answer, somewhere, and it just needs research.

Q: Your New Beta Theme

Robert CartainoYour site looks a bit different today. The design changes are a "sneak peek" at the new Stack Exchange Beta theme. sorry, nitpicking is my expertise

@HodofHod I've mentioned this in an answer to the question rebecca just oneboxed.

which I just commented on
refresh the page, I edited the question to add instructions
since favicons change so rarely, browsers cache them like crazy.

@msh210 sorry, sorry, I was busy refreshing and deleting cache
@RebeccaChernoff interesting the chat one worked without me doing anything
@balpha Hello! good to see you here :-)

hi
@HodofHod it's the identical file
chat steals it from the main site

@balpha Which is why it's weird that the chat page's favicon is the new one, yet the main page's is still sketchy

9:01 PM
ah, chat appends a cache breaker
I wonder why we do that... doesn't make much sense
in this case it's good though

@RebeccaChernoff Followed 'em. Didn't work.

@msh210 same

@msh210 did you do a hard refresh?

@RebeccaChernoff Ja.

refresh harder!

9:04 PM
:-)

@RebeccaChernoff I'm giving her all she's got, Cap'n!
@balpha Sorry, not picking up the vernacular. I assume a cache breaker is something that forces the browser to ignore the cache and reload something each time. is that the "?v=63c0bb6d127" at the end of the link?

yep
because that number changed recently (when chat was build), your browser thinks it's a new file and re-downloads

@balpha If i'm understanding this properly, it seems the sprites on the main page also got a cache breaker cdn.sstatic.net/beta/img/sprites.png?v=3

yes, but the favicon doesn't

@RebeccaChernoff: It seems like there's a lot of empty space in the header, above and below the title

9:11 PM
@balpha interesting. what exactly do these appended things like "?v=3" or "s=32&d=identicon&r=PG" mean? Is it html? php? I'm sorry, my knowledge of this stuff is very weak. I've been wondering this for a while. ever since I realized you can start appending different tab names to the users page, and get different results: judaism.stackexchange.com/users?tab=activity

In the World Wide Web, a query string is the part of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that contains data to be passed to web applications such as CGI programs. When a web page is requested via the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, the server locates a file in its file system based on the requested URL. This file may be a regular file or a program. In the second case, the server may (depending on its configuration) run the program, sending its output as the required page. The query string is a part of the URL which is passed to the program. Its use permits data to be passed from the HTTP clie...

it's really just cheating. To your browser, x.png?v=1 and x.png?v=2 look like different files. To our server, there's no difference.

@msh210 Why thank you!
@balpha so why does it work on the users page? why is that sorting method even available there?

so by changing the query string, you're asking the browser to re-download the image, because it thinks it's a new one that it doesn't have cached yet

@msh210 side point. can you merge the two mochin rechavims?

9:14 PM
@ShmuelBrill I was just looking at doing so, but don't know for certain they're identical.

@HodofHod oh, no, that's not quite the same thing -- you see, the query strings have an actual purpose, that's what you see on the users page. Using a query string as a cache breaker is actually just abusing it.

@balpha Ah, I see. But I still don't understand why the site accepts a query string that that it wasn't meant to, e.g. "?tab=activity"? (I took it from the meta site, so maybe that's why, but then why is there no link on the main?)

It does accept it. When I said "To our server, there's no difference", that's a bit simplified. There's no difference if you're downloading a static file, e.g. an image. On dynamically generated results, like all the actual pages of the site, query strings are indeed looked at.

@balpha Aha, and processed, even where they're not meant to. Interesting

Q: Whose reputation?? (on privileges page)

msh210The page http://judaism.stackexchange.com/privileges/user/-1 says "Your reputation" rather than "Community's reputation".

@msh210 I'm just a goy curious about the new site design ;-)

@Szabolcs Well, welcome anyway. :-) In case you haven't seen it: meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/862

10:18 PM
@msh210 Is the new favicon showing up for you?
Hello @Jin and thanks again for the nice new look :-)

Jin
@HodofHod my pleasure. although this isn't your final look :)

@Jin I do hope not, but the change is still welcome. I'll try not to get too used to it.

Jin
@HodofHod did you see the new stackexchange.com redesign that was also rolled out today?
blog.stackexchange.com has been redesigned also.

@Jin I did! Rchern pointed both out to me earlier. Very nice :-)

@HodofHod Yes, @Jin, thanks!

Jin
10:27 PM
@HodofHod @msh210 thank you for your feedback and bug reports on the new theme.
if you find anything else, please keep posting in that same Meta thread.

@HodofHod No.

@msh210 what browser are you using?

Jin
chrome tends to cache favicons pretty hard

@HodofHod Firefox 10.0.2 on a Mac.

Jin
go to that url and hard refresh, then visit the main site and hard refresh again

10:30 PM
@msh210 don't know about macs. try something like command or shift + reload

@Jin Hm, I did that process before and then I still had the Sketchy one, but now I did the same process again and it's fine. :-)
@HodofHod command shift R (in Firefox. Can't speak for other browsers).

@msh210 ahh.
@msh210 Windows chrome is Ctrl+F5

Jin
i use cmd+R for Chrome OS X

I use shift+f5 in chrome

@Jin is that regular refresh or hard refresh?

Jin
10:34 PM
i think it's hard refresh

@RebeccaChernoff yeah they both work

A: How to force refresh without cache in Google Chrome?

William HilsumChrome documentation states that Ctrl+F5 or Shift+F5 should do "Reloads your current page, ignoring cached content. " If it is not working, you can file a bug report, but it looks like quite a few other people are having the same issue. [Existing bug log on this issue]

10:44 PM
@HodofHod indeedily.

Whoa. funky theme now

@Neal Like that Medina thing.

@msh210 ?

@Neal The drink. Funky cold Medina.

@msh210 no idea what that is

A: Your New Beta Theme

NaftaliOn the bottom corner of the chat the logo seems forced: Maybe remove the white box from around the logo, or lighten the general background (I am not sure of the way to go about this, but there must be some way so it fits seamlessly)

11:06 PM
"Funky Cold Medina" is a hip hop song written by Young MC, Michael L. Ross and Matt Dike, and first performed by Tone Lōc. It was the second single from Lōc's debut album Lōc-ed After Dark (1989). The single was released on March 18, 1989, and rose to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 the following month. It peaked on the UK Singles Chart at #13 in May of that year. The song title refers to a fictional aphrodisiac, which is presented in the accompanying video as a steaming love potion. The lyrics tell the tale of Lōc's initially unsuccessful attempts to attract women. At the suggestion of a b...
