After much anticipation, we are happy to announce that our friends at Nerd Merit Badges have created a Stack Overflow GOLD Badge. That’s right:

If you’ve earned one of our virtual gold badges on Stack Overflow, you’ve put a lot of work into doing something awesome. We give you flair so you can direct people around the Internet to your profile and show off all the badges you’ve earned, but we wanted to enable you to show off your accomplishment in real life, too.

It’s not all fun and games, though; John and Randy point out that this badge comes with responsibility: …

Q: Linking to specific answers or comments

Double AAHow do I give someone a link to a specific answer or comment? I know I can, but the only way I can do it now is to go to my user's recent activity and grab the link from there. Is there an easier way? Or a formula?

Here is the plan that I intend to execute on judaism.stackexchange.com/a/12249/2 . I'll wait three hours (until 13:00 EST) for feedback. :
1) Delete all comments from Dec 18 19:59 on.
2) Unlock the post.
3) Post a comment saying that the post is unlocked to allow further responses regarding the topic at hand, but that, at least in this thread, there will be zero tolerance for attacks on either individuals or entire hashkafot (as opposed to debate regarding the particular topic at hand, which is fine).
4) Watch and enforce #3.
@msh210 @Will @HodofHod @Alex @avi Like I said, I'm open to feedback on the above for the next 3 hours.

3:36 PM
@IsaacMoses Sounds good. I wonder only whether it's worth copy-pasting the comments into chat.
@msh210 Done. It's deletable if that's what others think is wise.

4:00 PM
@msh210 Do you feel it's important to preserve the conversation for posterity?

4:35 PM
@IsaacMoses While some of it should have been said in nicer tones, it is a valuable discussion of hashkafa. Although "it's important to preserve" is overstating my view, substitute "a shame to discard" and I'll agree.

@msh210 Fair enough. When I execute my plan, do you think I should preserve Will's "let's take this to chat" link, include my own link to the chat in my #3 comment, or just leave it for people who are already interested to dig for?
@msh210 What I don't want to say is "feel free to attack each other in chat." While that's less likely to require mod action, it's still not cool to fight here, IMO.

@IsaacMoses Right. So [continued]
@IsaacMoses [continued] Well, I don't think preserving the "take it to chat" link will make much sense out of context (what was taken to chat was not the comments that will have been preserved), so either include a separate link to chat or drop it. Don't know which.

@IsaacMoses interesting page, but is there something specific you're pointing to or reason you posted the link that I'm not seeing?

@msh210 Sorry. Just pointing out a cool new feature
I just hope they'll do the same thing for SE staff one of these days

@msh210 That's not bad, but I'd love to see something like an enhanced org chart, explaining what the different teams are, what their roles are, who's on them, and how to contact them.

5:01 PM
@msh210 No. If I can't get this done by whining to you, the world is insufficiently attuned to my desires.

@IsaacMoses :-)
I recently learned there's a WHINY_USERS variable in awk (the unix utility). What it does has nothing to do with its name; so I assume it was named by some developer after people complained about such a variable's absence.

@msh210 Cute, but poor coding practice.
... the sort of thing that could end up in thedailywtf.com
... and I see there's a recent post there from Israel: thedailywtf.com/Articles/Broken-Bus-Driver.aspx

5:22 PM
mhm. Well, good Shabas, @IsaacMoses and anyone else who shows up.

@msh210 You, too

6:08 PM
@IsaacMoses It's done.

I’m sitting up late this evening trying to think of an inspirational way to end this year with some grandiloquent statement about our growth and the great job everyone has done this year. I don’t know; maybe it’s the glow of the Christmas tree behind me, or the eggnog recipe I’ve been experimenting with… but, really, anything I can say here can only lessen the outpouring that comes following this…

Greetings to the Stack Exchange Moderators,

In a yearly tradition at Stack Exchange, we set aside this time of year to make sure we are “giving back” to effect posit …
