@tim - for adding links into posts, you can use the buttons above the post (from left to right they are Bold, Italic, Link, Quote, Code, Image and then some formatting options)
Alternatively, if you look at my edit, the text box shows [similar question][1] and then at the bottom - [1]: music.stackexchange.com/q/24173/104
that's easier to read in the edit window, tbh

Awesome that we're getting into another session of pro's and con's concerning a music markup language for the site.
I thought Swedes were the champions of delaying decisions in order to reach total consensus, but I'm not so sure anymore.

@MeaningfulUsername :-)
Even from that new post, it does look like Lilypond still is the most likely

Possibly, or it will just peter out to nothing, again.
There were kB's of discussion already before, and none of it lead to a conclusion.
Well at least there are two clear cut alternatives, and it looks like we could have both.
I find the feedback of the SE developers a bit lacking.
Now we're just guessing and basically inventing problems.

@MeaningfulUsername they were not going to happen before graduation
We have good guidance on what is needed now, and I think lilypond has the js piece so is workable
The thing to remember is the amount of development they are doing for a huge number of sites, and there aren't many devs
Tracking things in meta gives you a good picture of just how much they are doing (plus a whole host of behind the scenes stuff)

Way to bring reality to my nag-fest :).

@MeaningfulUsername :-) sorry

If the Wikipedia thingy supports ABC too, that makes the case for it stronger, and we can have both.

@MeaningfulUsername If one can do it all, then it makes sense. Although that point on which ones we need and how to distinguish between them is interesting - ie guitar tablature, full score etc

Doesn't all answers, like usual, lie within Wikipedia?

meh - general answers, sure, but accuracy is ... variable

I'm guessing they have a lot of different markups, and need to differentiate between them, so the problem should have a solution.
Even though I am a guitarist, one could ask if we need jTab.
It seems to cause harm more than people are using it.
With Lilypond you can get tablature.

@MeaningfulUsername ooh - didn't know that
that's handy

@MeaningfulUsername I don't see anything about tablature

@RoryAlsop No, that was about the wiki plugin. But I see you got some examples from others.

so lilypond can do the lot then - we may need to pop up a meta post on syntax and usage once it goes live (as it is a little complex) but it looks grand

Yeah, at first it can be a bit intimidating, but a small example without some of the bells and whistles should show that not much is needed for a basic melody.

If anyone is interested I've been taking a composition class and recently wrote a fugue for it. If anyone wants to listen to it here is a link: soundcloud.com/dom-postorivo/musc252-domenic-postorivo-fugue I can also provide a score if someone wants to analyse it.

So I posted this a while back (music.stackexchange.com/q/22005/12539) and then my dad told me I couldn't sing and now I don't know who to believe. :/
