@MartinScharrer As I said, reading the specs using \pdfxform for clipping seemed like an abuse of what it's for, so this is not entirely surprising

Q: xeCJK messes with punctuation

FrançoisNeither a question nor really a complain, but I find I cannot use xeCJK in multilingual documents (in the present case French + English + Chinese), simply because it messes with the punctuation in the non-Chinese parts. It will, for instance, change "this… that" to "this…that" and "this, that" to...

@JosephWright In my defense I got the code from the graphics pdftex driver.

@MartinScharrer Yes, it takes quite a bit of reading to understand these things. The driver code is all a bit of a black art

What I like about \pdfxform is that you can store and reuse content, like a PDF form of \savebox/\usebox. I'm using this in my little storeboxpackage.

@MartinScharrer That's what it's actually for :-)

it's a real pity that it doesn't work with TikZ transparencies and patterns.
However, I have the feeling that this is more a TikZ issue.

9:24 AM
@MartinScharrer The TikZ drivers are a bit hit-and-miss. There is a lot of unnecessary material, which makes reading them hard work

@JosephWright I think the transparency code is added to the page, not to the picture, and storing and reusing pictures will disconnect both, I guess.
However, using TikZ patterns will lead to an invalid PDF!
Adobe Acrobat gives you an error!
@JosephWright: It looks to me that something like \color@setgroup/\color@endgroup is missing for these TikZ features.

Morning! :)

10:11 AM
good morning @PauloCereda, new avatar? :)

@wh1t3 Yes, Christmas time. :)
Worst Santa Claus impersonation ever. :D

10:43 AM
About the birthday contest: we should give prizes to Yiannis and Gonzalo. :)

11:35 AM
@wh1t3 I've added an answer. Did you have a reason for pointing out the question in chat? (Just the code in the comments issue?)

11:50 AM
@AlanMunn Some moderator should try and put the code samples in the question.

@egreg I already did so.

We could come up with a package providing phonetic punctuation.

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 1H 2012

Grace NoteWhat in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is Going On Here? TL;DR -- put images and links in the answers. If they get voted up enough, they will appear on the main site as community promotion ads. But whyyyyyyy? This is a method for the community to control what gets promoted to visitors on the s...

I don't understand.

12:09 PM
@AlanMunn: I wanted to check if it was desirable here. At that point it wasn't really in a format appropriate for this site. I decided against it though, since it could quite easily be modified into something that was. Then I became busy and forgot about it...

@PauloCereda Classic. But the package would only work with iTeX <ding>.

@AlanMunn LOL. So true. :)

12:42 PM
@PauloCereda Repost the old ads and delete from the 2011 thread?

@JosephWright Ah.

12:57 PM
@AlanMunn That should be iTeX (^G), as I proposed some time ago. But some newbies may not understand the notation. :)

1:15 PM
@egreg I didn't get it. :)

@PauloCereda ASCII 7 was used as a signal for "ring the bell", in the olden days. And the usual conventions said that ASCII 7 was obtained by Control-G, denoted usually by ^G.

@egreg Ah! I could not remember the symbol used for a speaker beep. :)

echo -e \\a :)

1:33 PM
@wh1t3 Oh my, my scripts will never be the same now. :)

1:56 PM
@PauloCereda best thing to annoy coworkers

2:55 PM
Yay, my guitar is finally fixed. :)

Q: Questions about Bjornstrup

BjornstrupI use \documentclass{scrbook} with \usepackage[Bjornstrup]{fncychap}. How can I style the partpage like the chapterpage in the Bjornstrup-style? Plus this I want to change the grey colour of the box from Bjornstrup in another one. How is this possible?

Asked by:
Do I sense some recursion going on? :)

@PauloCereda Hmm, I guess so

@JosephWright Reflexive questions. :)

If you haven't already, and you have some votes left, please upvote Leo's answer to this question: tex.stackexchange.com/q/36878/2693

Everyone: you'll need to vote (again) for the community ads as they get moved to the 'new' thread: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/2046/…
I'm guessing most will get carried forward
@AlanMunn Done

3:10 PM
@AlanMunn I'm out of votes, but I bookmarked to upvote it ASAP.

@PauloCereda I'd vote for removing fncychap from all software repositories. :)

3:42 PM
@egreg But the real question is can you resist answering the question.
4

@AlanMunn I will resist. I promise.
That style wouldn't be so bad, if the number were not slanted and remained inside the shaded area.

4:05 PM
@egreg We could add a new "close" reason: "Hic sunt dracones". :)
2

@egreg See you missed your opportunity to answer Canageek's Cthulhu question: you could have said "Use fancychap".

@AlanMunn I'll propose adding a new style to fncychap where the chapter title is written in the style of a Cthulhu worshipping madman. Maybe it turns out to be better than the others. Well, not "maybe". :)

@AlanMunn LOL

@egreg I like that. It's the recursive answer to the recursive question(er).

4:22 PM
@AlanMunn Indeed. :)

I've transferred a few more of the previous community promotion ads. It seems to me that all of the editor type ads should remain as permanent ads.

I'm getting lots of whitespace after section headings, and an absurd amount before subsection headings. Is there some obvious mistake I'm making that leaps to mind?

@ColinK Perhaps the text is stretched to fill the page - try \raggedbottom in the preamble to check that

wow. Perfect
oh so it was a stretching issue? Then it will probably go away when I've filled the page more
@stefan: Anyway, thanks a lot :)

Friends, we are mentioned in the main blog of StackExchange!
Posted by Aarthi Devanathan on December 2nd, 2011

Ah, it’s that time again — time to recap the best posts from this past month on our Blog Overflow sites. The last time we did this, we featured some really cool posts from all over. This past month, we had even more really awesome posts. We didn’t have over 9000 of them (though one can dream) but still. Lots.

Geographic Information Systems

I unabashedly called out GIS in the last post, and GIS totally rose to the challenge. Or maybe they just had an entry in the wings. Either way, their entry, It’s all about the data was a thought-provoking entry whose value goes well beyond map-making, with a message that programmers and UX designers and even DIYers can appreciate. …

@PauloCereda Great!

@StefanKottwitz: There is some merit in adding the tag, but I don't think that is adequate.

Q: How can one cite theorems of references?

iagoI would like to cite the item (iii) of proposition 3 of a reference. How can I do it? Which ways do you suggest? This is a question not only about LaTeX, but also about style. One option I have seen to cite pages of a reference is \cite[p.~333]{Audet}. Is there something similar to cite theorems,...

Isn't citing cross-referencing? :-) Well, removed, actually I wanted to add the {theorems} tag, since that's important here

@StefanKottwitz In a sense, yes -- but we use different tags for it. ;-)

7:58 PM
We need another interviewee. Suggestions? :)

Paulo :-D

@StefanKottwitz I was actually thinking of you. :)
Torbjørn is also a good interviewee. :)

8:32 PM
@PauloCereda I guess there's some more work for me to do before ;-) next year perhaps

@StefanKottwitz Don't worry. :) First interview of 2012 will be yours! :)

@StefanKottwitz Now we have more important things to do: convince Werner that redefining \rule is not a good idea. :(

8:48 PM
@egreg Wow!

@egreg right ... redefining is appealing and seems to be effective in the document body, however the uncool definition of a new macro is safer - hey it's different.

9:04 PM
@PauloCereda more of season's TeX? however, onboard TeX tools, including TikZ ;-)

9:45 PM
So, someone answered the Bjornstrup question. :)

A: Questions about Bjornstrup

Gonzalo MedinaHere's one possible solution: I redefined \partformat and the internal command \@part (from scrbook.cls) to imitate the Bjornstrup style for chapters; I also redefined \DOCH, \DOTI and \DOTIS as defined by Bjornstrup to allow a variable color. You can now control the background color for parts an...

9:59 PM
Oh, I just received a bounty of 50! I would double it for an answer (perhaps several), which makes it to our blog the next days, and the better the blog post (and the answer) the higher the bounty to the original answer. So easily 200 or even more to get for extending an already great answer to a blog post - 500 is the limit!

@egreg And when I answered it, someone simultaneously downvoted one old answer of mine. I guess I shouldn't have answered that Bjornstrup question after all :-) (by the way, I don't like much that style).
@PauloCereda Ho ho ho!

@GonzaloMedina Is there any fncychap style that has some attractiveness?

10:16 PM
@GonzaloMedina A downvote is just -2, much less than an upvote, so not much to care about if that was meaningless and without comment. Btw. I upvoted the Bjornstrup answer. Straight solution and good explanation. It's just long because Bjornstrup is not variable, for example regarding hard coded grayness.

@StefanKottwitz The downvote could be one of those accidental ones, of course

@StefanKottwitz Yes, I know... and I don't really care about that; it's just that the coincidence seemed funny to me. Thanks for the vote!
@StefanKottwitz: How are you doing these days? I imagine you must be really happy (and perhaps sleepy).

@GonzaloMedina both :-D

@StefanKottwitz WOW!
Nothing to do with fncychap styles! :)

@StefanKottwitz what a beautiful baby!

10:25 PM
@egreg Her hand shows: chapter 5 - you should see the icon for chapter 10 ;-)

1 hour later…
11:47 PM
@GonzaloMedina Ho ho ho indeed! :)
@StefanKottwitz Sweet little girl! :)
