@G.Bay no, only vanilla tikz. compiling with pdfLaTeXcovered it, but I don't really want to run down which combination of fontenc/inputenc/mathdesign vs. mathdesign/[no-math]fontspecwas the culprit. @yo'; I promise I will write a real question someday!

@repurposer Have you tried double \\ ? "\\degree"

@G.Bay That just prints literal word degree in the output

@repurposer and how about \\degreeCelsius ?

normal \degreeCelsius actually works as intended, which is why I thought the whole thing was fishy
$\SI{30}{\\degreeCelsius}$ prints 30degreeCelsius

@repurposer and \\SI ?

12:06 AM
@G.Bay I'm just going to be a cheat and use ^\circ lol

LMAO

@G.Bay ! Undefined control sequence -- \degree -> \ERROR

@repurposer if you had a simple MWE i'm sure we would be able to get a solution faster

@G.Bay dissertation draft due by midnight, all in good time

Hold on, let me try somthing
@repurposer 45\si{\degreeCelsius}
that worked for me

12:20 AM
@G.Bay \degree is the one I need; \degreeCelsius worked all along, I was just comparing to that

@repurposer works the same here 45\si{\degree}

@G.Bay in a node in math mode?

@repurposer outside math mode
can't you do $ math ... $ \degree $ math ... $ ? lol
its kind of cheating too i know
actually i just worked in math mode too

@G.Bay still does not work inside math mode, but it does ok outside math mode. At the moment, done is better than perfect, thanks!

@repurposer this worked for me \node[draw, circle] {$x^3 + 3000 \si{\degree} $};
you're including the \usepackage{siunitx} right ?

12:28 AM
@G.Bay yes :)

@Chris'ssistheartist hello

@Chris'ssistheartist Hello
@DavidCarlisle Just spoke to Jonas re. website: he seems like a nice chap :-)

You're always great here and very active! :-)
I try to write in latex \left \{\frac{x}{y} \right\}\left \{\frac{y}{z} \right\} and it seems that the second part looks smaller.
That is \left \{\frac{y}{z} \right\}
I wonder how to make both parts look the same in size. I use amsart document. Do you have any idea how to fit that?

@JosephWright yes the fist skype call went well, did you join the one on Friday?

@DavidCarlisle No, had to work

8:54 AM
@JosephWright same here;-)
@Chris'ssistheartist in general it is usually better to use fixed sizes such as \bigl\{...\bigr\} as the size chosen by left right isn't always the best and it adds extra horizontal space.

@JosephWright sounds about right

@DavidCarlisle Indeed
@DavidCarlisle I have exactly the same with SVN

@DavidCarlisle great. The only remaining problem is that the brackes seem smaller than the fraction. Ca we fix that somehow?

@Chris'ssistheartist you have big bigg Big Bigg... just choose a size that suits you

9:01 AM
@DavidCarlisle Oh, sorry. I'm a beginner. Thank you!!! :-)

@Chris'ssistheartist no problem:-)

(I know some stuff in latex but I cannot afford to call myself other than a beginner)

@Chris'ssistheartist I suppose I can't do that (having used it since 1987:-)

@DavidCarlisle with bigg it works incredibly awesome! Thanks again! :-)
@DavidCarlisle I know, you also helped me the last time. You're definitely an expert! :-)

9:45 AM
@DavidCarlisle Is there a very simple way to put a lable to an equation in the right side?
Like x^2+x +1= 0 $(1)$
In math stackexchange editor it's enough to use tag, but I try to put my work in a latex document.

9:59 AM
@Chris'ssistheartist all the display equation environments do that by default, eg \begin{equation}1=0\end{equation} or for multiline displays see amsmath package (texdoc amsmath should show the doc)

@DavidCarlisle OK, thank you! That's a simple way to do it! :-)
@DavidCarlisle The only problem is that the label still appears in the left side.

@Chris'ssistheartist it's on the right by default leqno option on \documentclass makes it go to the left

@DavidCarlisle OK.
@DavidCarlisle Done. I used \documentclass[reqno]{amsart} :-)

11:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle Exciting times ahead :-)

11:25 AM
@JosephWright any particular excitement? (currently I thought I perhaps ought to write a slide or two for tomorrow)

@DavidCarlisle Website

@JosephWright ah that!

@DavidCarlisle I'm going with 'live demos' :-)
@DavidCarlisle I have got all of the boring paperwork printed off

11:44 AM
Morning

@G.Bay Hello

@JosephWright: A new update on latex ?

@ChristianHupfer The patch release?

@JosephWright I don't know. I just updated TL

@ChristianHupfer In that case, 'yes' :-)

11:55 AM
@JosephWright What's new? Bug fixes of old errors by @DavidCarlisle? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Bug fix in a change made indeed by @DavidCarlisle

@JosephWright ;-) I should have a look into source2e then -- I don't think it's something really dramatic

@JosephWright Who else? :P

12:15 PM
@egreg -- knuth most likely didn't provide cmex5 and cmex7 because he didn't need them in taocp. you'll notice that he did provide a separate smaller integral; that's probably the only symbol he needed in a footnote.

12:25 PM
@egreg: speaking of smaller fonts, I tried the code with \scriptscriptstyle, but in my viewers, the brackets are a little off, maybe we should ajust the kern too?

@StefanKottwitz -- i pretty much agree with that. one thing a template is not is a document class; that's one misunderstanding that maybe we can fix. i'm writing a section for my tugboat column on the topic; maybe that will attract some new ideas to the discussion.
@yo' -- very pretty! and how did you reward yourself? by eating it?

@JosephWright snitch
@JosephWright I assume I'm supposed to have been removed from team svn-mirror

A: "Incompatible list can't be unboxed" with memoir class and many box registers

David CarlisleSorry this is a latex bug, it's bad style to use a \new... in a local group, but the behaviour if you do it is not supposed to be that bad, This adds two \global which get things back on track. I guess we'll push out a patch release. \documentclass{memoir} \makeatletter \gdef\e@ch@ck#1#2#3#4{% ...

12:55 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes: we'd ended up with two 'teams' so in adding Jonas I tided up so we have just one [our structure is pretty flat :-)]

@DavidCarlisle -- in amsart the default is equation numbers on the left (so as not to interfere with the tombstone on proofs). but @Chris'ssistheartist has figured it out correctly. (it's documented in the ams author handbook.

@barbarabeeton yes remembered when i saw the reqno option being used, no one reads handbooks and documentation, you should know that:-)

@DavidCarlisle -- yes, we're all too well aware of that, but we still write them so that we can always point to something where "we told you so". (it's always a good thing to have a backup excuse.)

@PauloCereda Even at max resolution?
@barbarabeeton Too bad his wife doesn't like footnotes! :)
@PauloCereda I received this email: “Solicitamos o orçamento para os itens discriminados no arquivo em anexo, assim como prazo e formas de pagamento.” Should I open the link? ;-)

@egreg My PDF viewers are bad. :) The one I can have a insane zoom in feature is a viewer you and @DavidCarlisle will dislike (search for apvlv). Let me post a screenshot. :)
@egreg ooh do not open, the document must be typeset in Word! :)
I think it's OK. :)

1:15 PM
@PauloCereda There are pixel alignment problems, I don't think it can be noticed in print; but obviously it is at screen resolution.

@egreg Got it, thanks. :)

1:39 PM
Is there any way to get new float caption to be capitalized? I must be doing something really noob here

1:51 PM
I'm using \DeclareNewFloatType{quadro}{placement=ht,fileext=frm,name=quadro}

Guys I'm looking for a way to type parentheses with some specific shape
For instance, the normal parentheses for )( is too round, looking for less curved one
Like the first parentheses in tex.stackexchange.com/questions/211134/…

@ShinKim Have you consider, changing font ?

ah, forgot to say, in MathJax.

hmm

it gets rounder and rounder when the text goes bigger,, almost like a part of a circle arc. kinda frustrating

2:08 PM
Maybe you could try fouriernc font, but it seems like it only gets that way if its a big part inside

@DavidCarlisle Frank asked about that too :-)

2:52 PM
So Wikipedia generates PDF articles using LaTeX?!

@PauloCereda Probably

@JosephWright They do use!

@PauloCereda Link?

@PauloCereda Have just downloaded some lab software that auto-installs LaTeX (Debian package on Ubuntu LTS). At the moment it's not actually working and is trying to set up TL'09, but ...
@PauloCereda So they do: XeTeX

2:57 PM
@JosephWright oh :)
@JosephWright Ah!

@PauloCereda System fonts

@JosephWright Got it. Makes sense.

3:26 PM
I'm almost giving up (and posting a question), there seems to be no way to fix a new float label capitalization

@G.Bay Do you have a MWE?

@PauloCereda -- don't know about this first-hand, but earlier this morning i had to look at the source of the (english) wikipedia article on latex to see how they rendered the latex2e logo. it's rendered in html, but follows exactly the definition in latex.ltx; the key clue is the width of the space between the "X" and the "2", which is .125em. decent job! (reason for looking was in conjunction with a proposal to add the slashed-zero \emptyset to unicode.)

@barbarabeeton oh my! You are one of a kind! That's a clinical eye! :)

3:46 PM
\documentclass[a5paper]{abntex2}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{newfloat}
\DeclareFloatingEnvironment[fileext=frm,placement={!ht}]{quadro}

\begin{document}

Blabla as seen \autoref{qua:this}.

\begin{quadro}
\caption{this quadro .\label{qua:this}}

\end{quadro}

@G.Bay ABNT! ABNT! Oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no!
2
@egreg: ^^
:)

@PauloCereda xD, pode usar memoir, whatever

@G.Bay :)
Actually it's a good indication, since abntex2 is based on memoir AFAIK. :)

problem is that if the name is defined as "Quadro" then every autoref will also display "Quadro". When it should be lowercase, like figures and tables.

@G.Bay I had an idea.
Hold on.
@G.Bay Add this to your preamble:
\newcommand*{\quadroautorefname}{quadro}

3:54 PM
@PauloCereda works great, :D thanks
feels like cheating but might be the only way

@G.Bay: hyperref should be the last package in most cases

@G.Bay My pleasure, glad it works. :) Also, don't mind my rant about ABNT. :)

@ChristianHupfer the last of all? what cases would cause be trouble if I add it last ?

@G.Bay It is not cheating IMHO. Since you are clearly adding a new float, there has to be an indication on how autoref should deal it. ;)

@G.Bay The exceptions are glossaries and cleveref (and perhaps a few other ones which I can't remember right now)

3:56 PM
@G.Bay: in other news, were are you from? :)

@ChristianHupfer Hmmmm, I do use glossaries, so it might need to search a bit about that
@PauloCereda Brazil zil zil, just started my master at UFSC. And you?

@G.Bay It's stated (recommended) in glossaries-user manual

@ChristianHupfer Yes, I see , at very second page inside red box, lol. Thanks

@G.Bay How nice! :) It's always great to meet a fellow Brazilian. :) I am doing my PhD in Poli/USP. :)

@G.Bay Yes, it's very easy to miss it :-P

4:00 PM
hehe
gtg now fellows, I will be back later. Thank you all

@G.Bay Bye...

@G.Bay With memoir you don't need to load newfloat:
\documentclass[a5paper]{abntex2}
\usepackage{hyperref}

\newfloat{quadro}{frm}{Quadro}
\newcommand{\quadroautorefname}{quadro}
\makeatletter
\renewcommand{\fps@quadro}{!htp}

\begin{document}

Blabla as seen \autoref{qua:this}.

\begin{quadro}
\caption{this quadro.\label{qua:this}}

\end{quadro}

\end{document}
@G.Bay Don't say as default !ht, always add p or there can be problems with the float queues.
@G.Bay @PauloCereda Perhaps the only good thing about abntex2 is that it's based on memoir. ;-)

@egreg 'I don't have to use it' ;-)

@JosephWright That's the other good thing, yes. :D

@egreg :)
@JosephWright I am using KOMA for my thesis. :)

4:07 PM
@PauloCereda Fair enough:I I'd go with report but there we are

@PauloCereda \documentclass[<options>]{egreg}
4

@PauloCereda: KOMA! KOMA! Oh no, oh no, oh no :-P

@egreg What happens if one uses $$ with this class? :)
@ChristianHupfer traitor. :P

@PauloCereda Your disk will be erased and formatted ;-)

@PauloCereda \showthe\catcode`\$ :-)

4:12 PM
@JosephWright :D
@ChristianHupfer :D

@PauloCereda I'm the only user! So I'm free to use $$ and I secretly do it: the pleasure of transgression. ;-)
2

@egreg ooooooh
@JosephWright: ^^ Enrico of the Yard! :)

@PauloCereda I also like to tell lies.

@egreg All cretans are liars, so I heard. :)

@PauloCereda Epimenides of Knossos (Crete) always said it, so it's true. Oh, wait!

4:17 PM
@egreg :)

5:14 PM
At the third round of Fedora 23 Final Go/No-Go Meeting, that just ends, has been Fedora 23 Final-RC10 declared as GOLD.
GA of this release is planed on Tuesday 2015-Nov-03.
Yay!

@PauloCereda Will it be the best ever? Of course until next year.

@egreg Yes! The bestest ever. :P

@PauloCereda Oh my... vim- and Fedora - user ... :-( /sob

@ChristianHupfer o.O

@ChristianHupfer you can't really expect taste and refinement in choice of software from a duck.

5:28 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, that's true ... on the other hand -- @PauloCereda is the only programming duck I know -- I should give him a chance ... a last one ;-)

@DavidCarlisle I like software. :)
@ChristianHupfer ooh programming. :)

@PauloCereda developing software ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Quack!
@DavidCarlisle: did you enjoy my GuIT video? It has vim in it. :)

@PauloCereda link?

5:39 PM
@PauloCereda it's playing... (did @egreg choose the music?)

@DavidCarlisle no. :)

@PauloCereda why have you got all those lines of ~ at the end of your document?

@DavidCarlisle ooh they are not there! :)

@PauloCereda confusing editor

@DavidCarlisle you are just jealous. :)

5:46 PM
$ vim
bash: vim: command not found

@DavidCarlisle :D

6:34 PM

@PauloCereda with tl2015/pdflatex ?

@DavidCarlisle so there is some problem with the class, I guess. :(

@PauloCereda bad date:

\@parse@version #1/#2/#3#4#5\@nil ->#1#2#3#4

@DavidCarlisle indeed, just found that out. :(

@PauloCereda move the v. after the 2015/04/22 ;-)

6:40 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yep. :)

@PauloCereda do you like the high level of error checking and user friendly reporting I put in that code?

@DavidCarlisle Of course! :)

@PauloCereda note that #5<-//00 that was a concession so if you don't put a date at all it doesn't eat your whole document looking for one...

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@PauloCereda see I was trying to be kind:-)

6:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle You are the best. <3

@PauloCereda Joseph seems to have scheduled me to talk at 15:30 tomorrow, I wonder when I ought to write some slides....

@DavidCarlisle You have the bus time. :)

@PauloCereda Good thinking. and lunch.
@PauloCereda so how come the class got to ctan and texlive without anyone trying it at all since it generates an error on every use?

@DavidCarlisle No one wants to write Brazilian legal texts in TeX? :)

@PauloCereda I can't believe that.

6:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle Don't believe everything you read

@JosephWright Hungarian phrasebook. :)

@PauloCereda Subtitle to me second talk: Then Lancelot and I jump out of the rabbit ...

@JosephWright If Arthur attends tomorrow's meeting, replace Lancelot by his name. :)

@PauloCereda My next talk at TUG will be Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita…

@egreg ooh Dante Gregorio. :)
My next talk at TUG will be (Metallica's) Bring your daugther to the [template] slaughter.
2
@Johannes: ^^

7:12 PM
@PauloCereda Oh :-)

@Johannes_B How is that sentence translated to German? :) I could present it at Dante. :)

@PauloCereda It seems most of them are already slaughtered but won't die and instead zombie around. We need to patch them up i think.
@PauloCereda Bring deine Tochter zum Vorlagenschlachter.
@DavidCarlisle Do you spot the compound word? ^^^ :-)

@Johannes_B ooooooh
:)

is there anything wrong with this - \graphicspath{ {../images/} }
?
I can't seem to get the path to work and I'm wondering if it's the double dot bit

@baxx depends on your settings in texmf.cnf with some settings input of files from paths starting ../ is forbidden

hmm - i've never heard of that file before so if default is not to work then that's whats up i guess

@baxx does \includegraphics{../images/file.png} work (ie not using graphicspath?

@DavidCarlisle ah i think i know actually - i have the preamble in a different dir but main file is in a dir down so the command is probably getting thrown out 2 secs
yeah that was it, whoops !
