could someone who have the powers please make a tag for texfot? I need to post question on it as I am having problem and I see no texfot tag. Here is the man page for it manpagez.com/man/1/texfot it is new program part of TL 2015. I assume only moderators can make new tags

1:48 AM
@Nasser Ask your question, and then I can tag it.

2:02 AM
@Nasser But if you >300 reputation, you can create a tag yourself.

Does LuaTeX keep files open rather than closing them? Possible bug:

A: why lualatex gives erorr "Too many open files" but pdflatex does not on same latex file?

cfrI can confirm this behaviour. To test: Create 1860 copies of example-image-1x1.pdf (or other image of your choosing) named 1.pdf, 2.pdf,..., 1860.pdf. If you use bash and you have TeX Live 2015 installed in the standard place, you can use the following commands: i=0; while [ $i -le 1860 ] ; d...

^^ isn't an answer. It is a method for reproducing the bug without downloading the OP's 80M .zip file.

tex.stackexchange.com/questions/253253/… need some help about this post

8:14 AM
@MickyK you need to ask a question about tex not just put up a picture of a gantt chart and ask someone draws it, that's why it was closed in the first place. focus on one aspect, a bar or a label or something and try to do it in pgfgantt and if it doesn't work ask about the tex code for that aspect, with example code and a copy of any error message you get,
@SeanAllred align ? or \item$...$ you could start the first $ automatically and define \par \item to close it, but probably I wouldn't

@DavidCarlisle Sir I am still working on this project but still no progress and also I find the example, but it shows me error. So tell me what should I do next?

@Ubiquitous What is Windows? ;-)

9:47 AM
@Ubiquitous I get a long delay the first time I run pdfTeX on Win10, but after that all looks OK

@JosephWright thanks for checking! I'll try troubleshooting at my end.

@ChristianHupfer Not useless, just badly posted.

@Johannes_B That's a matter of the viewpoint :-P

@Johannes_B The last comment right now is mine... Isn't the code the code we started with which had nothing to do with the question really? But maybe this just is better asked in a different forum...?

1:34 PM

@PauloCereda Wow, you bought the frame already ;-)

cfr
@UlrikeFischer But LuaTeX really shouldn't be doing this in the first place, of course. The real question, I take it, is why it is doing it and how it can be stopped ;). The documentation for ulimit is obnoxious: doesn't even mention -n or number of files. But you are right: I think your suggestion might be a workaround for the OP until the bug is fixed. Thanks.

@PauloCereda YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYDCA!
@PauloCereda Almost 15 years, some of my friends decided that we should alter the routine slightly so that they could be singing “UTF-8” with my doing the letters over my head.

@cfr Seen it. This is not a forum and it works differently. Many who come here, should go to a forum instead.

1:51 PM
@ArthurReutenauer I am always prepared. :)
@ArthurReutenauer :)
@ArthurReutenauer oooooh :D

@cfr thanks. I did and Linux replied back `1024`.

>ulimit -n
1024

@Johannes_B Still has the same issue: you can say 'there are packages to draw Gantt charts' or even 'consider a specialist tool' but it's not reasonable to expect someone to draw a figure for the OP. (Quite apart from the entire 'this is not a productive use of time' point.)

@cfr You can’t do much about users like that; he’s clearly not making any effort to help himself, and in spite of that several people did try to put him on the right track, for which he’s shown no appreciation whatsoever. Maybe someone should reply that as a new user he disappointed us? ;-)

@ArthurReutenauer I think it's fairer to say that for whatever reason it's not been possible to convey why the question in it's current form is not going to be successful. I guess for the OP it's an entirely clear question ('I need to do a Gantt chart for my PhD').

@JosephWright Agree with you here. I don’t think the dialogue (or absence thereof) would have gone any better on a newsgroup, a mailing list, or any electronic means of communication.
@JosephWright For sure it hasn’t been possible to convey that notion, but you really can’t blame that on the community. Note the exchange has taken place over the course of one month, is is not a matter of heated argument. He just expects us to do his homework for us, and won’t take no for an answer. I think he’s just a jerk (if only for his insistence on calling Clea “brother”). It also baffles me that he needs to use software to explain something to his advisor. Pen and paper, anyone?

2:12 PM
@JosephWright Agreed.

@JosephWright Much as I appreciate Philp's work on Biber, I think this answer is a bit premature, and not terribly helpful. Perhaps it should be a comment. When the 2.2 version is pushed out to CTAN then I can update the answer. tex.stackexchange.com/a/258217/2693

5:17 PM
@AlanMunn If you feel like this then why don't you add a comment to Philips answer? Why do you try to hide behind Joseph?

@UlrikeFischer I'm not hiding, I'm asking for an opinion. I was about to add a comment and I wanted to see what @JosephWright thought. That's all.

@JosephWright It's the kind of answer that gets people downloading a local version from Sourceforge which will then not get updated normally, or be installed badly or...

If I recall correctly, Patrick and Stephan: Dortmund, Marco: Bayern

5:38 PM
@AlanMunn There is no problem in using a dev-biber from sourceforge. At some time I had four different biber version (with different names) for tests. biber.exe is so self contained that you can put it everywhere. Also I doubt that unsure users will really do manual installation, normally they wait for the update.

@UlrikeFischer I'm sure that's true, but you are not by any means a regular user, that's all. And there are plenty of unsure users who end up doing somewhat odd things and getting into trouble as a result. And given the frequency of the error, a lowest common denominator type answer is IMO the safest approach.

@PauloCereda Huh?

5:48 PM
@AlanMunn Don't overreact. Philip announced that the next version will handle this problem better. This information is useful and I see no reason why he shouldn't have mentioned it. Even if this triggers users to try out the dev: it won't break their system. F
@ChristianHupfer Darmstadt is now in the 1. Bundesliga.

@egreg Wow! And how long doest it take you to travel such distance? You travel by byke, don't you?

@GonzaloMedina I left this morning about 9am and got back at 8:30pm. I found heavy traffic this morning. Several people had the same idea of going to Croatia today. ;-)

8:01 PM
@egreg And do you travel with a group of other bykers or do you go solo?

@GonzaloMedina Alone.
@GonzaloMedina I found some heavy traffic, but nothing compared to what I saw coming back: a traffic jam from Koper to the Croatian border about 12km) and a similar one at Gorizia for going to Slovenia. In the other direction, fortunately.
I lost about a couple of hours this morning, because of traffic. I bet that the ones I met at the far end of the jam at Koper still have to cross the border.

@Nasser Eeek. I can't believe how the software companies have done this. It is not that long ago that this would have been clearly unacceptable. Now the attitude is apparently, 'oh, well - at least everyone will get security updates immediately'. The mind boggles. But then the whole thing is now aimed at selling you a marketing device. They just call it a computer or a tablet or a phone or... but, basically, they want to sell you a device whose primary purpose is to sell you more stuff. Pah.

@cfr I can see it from the vendor POV: you fix something, people don't update, you get blamed for issues in the wild that you've fixed

vdogsandmanI'm trying to get the following image to show up in my document: \begin{figure}[h] \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{experimentalapparatus} \caption{Experimental Apparatus. Copied from Dr. Wes Campbell's Lab Manual.} \end{figure} But it will not show up. However, when I just do \includegrap...

@JosephWright I can see that. My point was really that saying 'so it isn't all bad' merely because people will have to update is a serious misjudgement even granted that forcing updates is a benefit. I did not mean to take a position on whether it is a benefit or not, although I think not providing an opt-out at all is bad. (Some home users are technically proficient, after all - even on Windows.) What I find alarming is the idea that there is a bright side given everything else....

@GonzaloMedina A vote here? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/242304/… I gave three to you ;-)

@cfr Fair enough

@egreg Of course. Done!

@cfr With enough technical skill people will be fine :-) (I have a Win Pro license, not a home one, and will simply Group Policy Object around any issues, exactly the same as on a corporate set up)

Q: ! Output loop---1000 consecutive dead cycles.<everypar>{\setbox \z@ \lastbox } \bwe

Karen Hovhannisyanmy tex file was compiling well, and then it started to give the error that I copypasted into the title. Any ideas what is that and how to overcome it? In case it matters, I use Texmaker. Thanks and best, Karen

@JosephWright You as a moderator have more close votes than a normal user ;-) Go ahead
@egreg VTC

@ChristianHupfer It's a lot of work, plus there are a good number that can be answers, need thought or should be left open (as @cfr has observed)
@ChristianHupfer Ideally there'd be some mechanism to mark questions 'unclear as is: needs an edit' which could then raise them after say 1 month. However, the Powers don't think that way.

@JosephWright As I say, I really meant to be granting the author the claim that forcing updates was a benefit. I just think that, granted that - and I can certainly see the argument for it - the upbeat ending is misplaced since everything else discussed is foul. I don't think greater security compensates when they are ensuring that people have precious little privacy or security from MS and whoever else MS chooses.

Is it possible to pass a length/dimension to offset in \includepdf? Although I've now lost the unanswered question this might have let me answer.

@JosephWright Yes, I agree with that

@cfr Yes: \includepdf[offset=10 10]{b.pdf} first value shifts horizontally (to the left, if positive); second value shifts vertically (upwards, if positive).

Q: using geometry package

newbie155151Hi can I ask what is wrong to this? \documentclass[6pt]{book} \usepackage[ papersize={177mm,233mm}, %paper size (width,height) layoutsize={140mm,200mm}, %total size of the layout (width,height) layoutoffset={17mm,10mm}, %both horizontal and vertical offset of the ...

@GonzaloMedina Yes, sorry. I should have been clearer. Can you pass something like \vleftmargin 0 if you don't know what \vleftmargin is?

Tom-TomHow could I test whether some label is on the current page, or on the previous or next one. @GonzaloMedina Have a nice time
@cfr It started at 23 o'clock local time here, which should be 22 o'clock in UK, I suppose?

@GonzaloMedina Never mind. I wasn't very clear and I don't know my idea would work anyway :(.

@cfr: To comfort you: I just answered an old question, and got distracted then ;-) I wasn't very helpful this evening

@ChristianHupfer And it is 2 hours? If so, it definitely lied. It told me it was ending in quarter of an hour an hour ago.

@cfr: No, not 2 hours this time. I got a message it would end in 29 minutes, just after the start, so it lasted only half an hour

cfr
OK. So the entire thing is just very confusing. I almost always end up missing it. On the other hand, I don't know what I'm meant to do when I don't.

@cfr That 'end in ...' thing always seem to be wrong

@JosephWright: Ah, it's still going on then ...

@JosephWright The begins in... thing is also wrong for me - at least in the summer. Do you happen to know why LuaTeX keeps files open when \includegraphics is used multiple times, rather than closing them like any sensible programme? Word used to do this on Mac OS X. Actually, Word doing that was the reason I taught myself LaTeX. So I'm now haunted by the thought that I have not really ever escaped....
