Is there a way I can tell LaTeX that it is really bad to leave big spaces when justifying things in this document?

12:45 AM
@egreg @DavidCarlisle: SP and shaky bus indeed!

Upsetting news from TUG: Kaveh's been suspended as President. :/

Getting a weird problem I'm not sure how to even MWE. One particular file of mine gives all signs of a successful won't overwrite the PDF on subsequent compilations, no matter the changes. If I delete the PDF, then it compiles fine. Not affecting any other files. Any ideas for what sort of trickery could be causing this?

@JosephWright the suppresfonterror thing is the l3names fix from the other day

@DavidCarlisle Yes
@DavidCarlisle Will send to CTAN pronto

8:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle New build -auto-edit' coming into play :-)

@JosephWright it'll probably never work
@JosephWright how easy would it be to build ltluatex.pdf and put it somewhere in the tds tree in 2e/base for Karl?

@DavidCarlisle Very easy: just needs to be added to the build script
@DavidCarlisle Checking it compiles nicely then will commit

@JosephWright that's what I thought but hadn't looked yet, probably should do that for next time.

@DavidCarlisle There was a reason we created a flexible testing and building script, you know

@JosephWright yes but you haven't set up voice commands to operate it while driving

8:26 AM
@SeanAllred Yes, I just read it in the newsletter ... well, I've did not vote at all during the election, I can't say anything about this issue

8:55 AM
Anyone know anything about Authorea? (authorea.com) One of our researchers asked me about it, and I've never heard of it before. It should have full LaTeX support.

9:20 AM
@JosephWright: Spam, lovely spam!

9:47 AM
@egreg We're (sadly) gonna face some tough and interesting times.

10:28 AM
@yo' I find there were good reasons for suspension.

@egreg I agree

@ChristianHupfer @yo' It is snowing.

@Johannes_B No snow here ... at least not on 400 meters altitude, but the mountains are completely hidden in fog, I can't see the summits (ca. 1200 meters) -- there might be snow up there
@egreg @JosephWright: Can I make a variant from a \prg_new_conditional routine?
@egreg: Thanks for stealing the tick :-(

10:46 AM
@ChristianHupfer Sorry, but I felt it was better to provide a real solution. ;-)

@ChristianHupfer that man really has no shame

@egreg I was in the shaky bus when my phone notified of that email. I was like, "Holy duck!"

@PauloCereda Another shake!

@egreg Indeed!

yo'
11:13 AM
@egreg From what the Board has told us, it appears so.
@ChristianHupfer Why couldn't you?
@Johannes_B not here, but there was white frost 2 days ago, everything was white in the morning (looking down from the 12th floor)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, that's what he is famous for @egreg :-P egreg -- the great tick usurper
@yo' It's a general question. Is it possible to do so?

yo'
@ChristianHupfer it should be possible for any macro that's correctly set up. Of course, you can't do it with the p parameter, but the variant :Nnn should be fine

@yo' Thanks. I don't use p in my conditional...

@yo' I had to scrape off ice from the windscreen in the last week of september for the first time.
Extreme hot summer, and know the winter has come.

@Johannes_B No snow here. :)

11:28 AM
@PauloCereda You've to wait for Brazilean winters then... when the temperature is 26°C ... :-P
@yo': Apparently I have to use \cs_generate_variant separately for each of the conditionals: \foo:nT, \foo:nTF, \foo:nF` for example?

@Johannes_B: Tonight's meal: Chatpata Keema ... very delicious, but don't tell Harish ;-)

@Maïeul I am a bit amused, the bidi update breaks several packages, but it's not bidis fault :-)
@ChristianHupfer I have to google what that is. One moment.

@Johannes_B: Since it's winter now I have to play the Imperial March in a loop and watch the battle on the ice planet Hoth :-P
No, I am not a Nerd :D

@ChristianHupfer Well, since i only know the imperial march from that guy on the unicycle and i don't know what ice planet Hoth means ... You have to be a nerd.

11:41 AM
@Johannes_B I've forgot: You've no idea about the real important things in life: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek ... :-( You, sir, are a non-trusted user on TeX.SX and no nerd :-(((((((((

yo'
@ChristianHupfer quite surely so.

@yo' Design flaw :D

@ChristianHupfer you could easily define a command that made all possible varaints

@ChristianHupfer Haven't seen Matrix movies, nor Harry Potter movies as well.

@ChristianHupfer I had to fix @DavidCarlisle's answers, now I have also yours. :P

11:44 AM
@DavidCarlisle @DavidCarlisle: I am just doing it ;-) But it would be nice to have this feature in the l3 kernel already

@egreg I was disappointed in your gathered answer, just copying and changing the definition: that's what I'd do, I'd expect an l3regex patch from you.
@ChristianHupfer complain to @JosephWright

@egreg That's not fixing that appending stuff I was not aware of the O.P. added :-(
@DavidCarlisle Nope, I will hack into l3kernel git and submit a 'fix'/addition ;-)
@Johannes_B Matrix is boring, but Harry Potter is ... well ... not so boring ... ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Do you have suggestions for topics? suedraum.de/latex/stammtisch

@Johannes_B: Can't you two both participants not develop a topic for yourself? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer We were talking about assoccnt as possible topic, but now ... pft
;-)

11:51 AM
@Johannes_B Ok, if you want to have bad packages as topic, use assoccnt, cntperchap and jumplines and some packages by @DavidCarlisle :-P
@Johannes_B: Seriously spoken: What about your favourite topic: Templates or 'Templates'?
@Johannes_B: Unfortunately there is no Freiburger Stammtisch any longer (Ok, I've never attended it in the past, but that's because I had no time or did not live near Freiburg for some years).

@ChristianHupfer Imagine me in front of those guys. I don't know how this would look like. Me jumping around like Rumpelstilzchen, or me standing there like the Fuehrer demolishing templates. Ohje.

@Johannes_B: It's possible no good idea to open a LaTeX Stammtisch in a small city with 3000 inhabitants, being the only LaTeX user here (most likely)

@ChristianHupfer You can get a new one running.

@Johannes_B: There might be good reasons why Heiko Oberdiek dropped the Freiburger Stammtisch

@FionaSmith xspace and ensuremath, you probably just killed egreg, — David Carlisle 8 mins ago

@DavidCarlisle I fainted. ;-)

11:57 AM
@ChristianHupfer Print on Papers: \TeX meet me at seven. Distribute in town, see if anyone comes. Date might be useful as well. ;-)

@Johannes_B: Don't mention the Fuehrer here ;-) (or the war) @PauloCereda ;-)
@Johannes_B: I think I will attract other audience than the desired one... LaTeX isn't Latex ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Why, is he listening/reading?
@ChristianHupfer That's why \TeX :-p

@ChristianHupfer Do the funny walk!

@Johannes_B Could be a Druckfehler :D

@ChristianHupfer /googles latex... hmm what are these women wearing?

11:59 AM
@PauloCereda No, I've to wait for Heimlich Bimmler ;-)

@egreg LOLOL

@PauloCereda la la la -- can't hear you

@ChristianHupfer Mr. Hilter. :)

@PauloCereda Für ein besseres Minehead :D

@ChristianHupfer :)

12:02 PM
@ChristianHupfer @PauloCereda made a mistake one time googled "LaTeX police" which could be translated by "LaTeX font" or "latex cop". Some image were nice during this meeting :/

@RomainPicot Oh no!

@RomainPicot Oh no...my eyes....my eyes ...

@PauloCereda @ChristianHupfer was during a meeting with alumni from my engineering school to show the font available with LaTeX, they laughed a little

@RomainPicot Oh no, engineers!
2

@PauloCereda Lol
@PauloCereda: Prejudice? :D
What have engineers ever done for us

12:07 PM
@ChristianHupfer I am in an engineering school. :P en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

@PauloCereda engineers are sweet and they love duck :-D

@RomainPicot yaaay

@PauloCereda I won't talk to you ever,ever,ever again :-P

@ChristianHupfer oh no

@RomainPicot Thereotical physicsts are not really sweet but they do love ducks too ... And they proved (well ;-)) that space-time is curved ... isn't that more important than planes, bridges, computers? ;-)
@RomainPicot: And at least one theoretical physicsist upvotes your answer -- I don't give a name here, however :-P

12:12 PM
@ChristianHupfer I work with physicist, it's fine or not? :-P

@ChristianHupfer C. H. Upfer. :)

@PauloCereda Pssh... that's my secret alter ego ;-)
@RomainPicot Theoretical physicists? Then yes!!!!

@ChristianHupfer Some of them have done some theoretical research :-)

Damn, I generated a \cs - variant for something I don't need at all :-( \begin{waste of time} ....
@RomainPicot .. some ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I'm not a theoretical physicists don't expect that I work only with them :-P

12:23 PM
@RomainPicot Nobody expects the Physicists Inquisition

12:34 PM

@DavidCarlisle yay

12:51 PM
@ChristianHupfer egreg has a lot of other obsessive constructive behavior to work on: serial-answering, serial-achieving... There is still hope for him because he doesn't ask excessively many questions, though. — T. Verron 3 mins ago

@DavidCarlisle Another report on the ltluatex + 2015/01/01 business: I guess we should sort
@DavidCarlisle Or do we take the position 'formats which have patch levels to apply are completely not support: you have to have the PL'

2:55 PM
@JosephWright Would this be proper English? "The \tkzDefPoints{1/2/A, 4/5/B} command defines the points A at (1,2) and B at (4,5)." Packt editors routinely extended my "\tkzDefPoints{...} defines ..." to improve (?) phrasing

@StefanKottwitz Looks OK

@JosephWright Good to know. I thought ""The command \tkzDefPoints{1/2/A, 4/5/B} defines" would be better. But does not?

@StefanKottwitz Yes

@JosephWright Yes does not? Yes would be better? :-)

@StefanKottwitz Yes it is better

3:05 PM
@JosephWright thanks

@ChristianHupfer By the way, I got a green tick usurped on Math.SE: judge for yourself.

Q: Proof of trigonometric relationship of angle bisector

JhonI have to prove the following equation: $$CD=\frac{2ab\cos\frac{C}{2}}{a+b}$$ where $CD$ is the angle bisector of $C$ in $\Delta ABC $. My attempt: I've started by rearranging the equation in terms of $\cos \frac{C}{2}$ ,then by squaring and subtracting $\sin^2 \frac{C}{2}$ from both sides, y...

@egreg You are in fact the Emporer, not Senator Palpatine :-P

3:43 PM
@JosephWright guess so I think (although I can't quite make the exact error) that just making sure \e@alloc@ccodetable@count really is a count register would work,
@JosephWright I'd be happier taking that position if the error message was half way understandable.
@egreg best thing I've heard all day

@PauloCereda: Your are participating a Math exam together with Cameron Diaz :-P

4:00 PM
@ChristianHupfer Oh my!

rep cap sucks... :-(

@ChristianHupfer Welcome in the club!

@egreg Hm... you're rep capped everyday, for me it's the 35th time (already)

@ChristianHupfer Almost “Epic”

Any emacs users? When using AucTeX should everything be under the backtick shortcut? I'm just wondering if all things should be under shortcuts, as I couldn't find anything for \cap

4:10 PM
@egreg I've got the normal Epic badge already although you're stealing ticks :-P

@PauloCereda baxx needs your help! ^^^^
2

@baxx you could try:
sudo dnf remove emacs && sudo dnf install vim
or

what use vim instead ? :P

echo alias emacs=vim >> ~/.bashrc
@baxx :)
@DavidCarlisle See I helped baxx! :)

@baxx I knew you'd get a high level of support in this forum.

4:13 PM
thanks @DavidCarlisle and @PauloCereda . Learning Vimscript now...

@baxx what backtick shortcut? (I use emacs but I didn't understand the question:-)

@baxx Oh no! :)

@baxx @PauloCereda has taken the wrong pills this morning ;-) He does not know what he was proposing actually ;-)

Ah, perhaps I have something environment specific - If I press backtick though I'm prompted with a list of macros, for example backtick followed by a will insert alpha

4:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle I love this image. :)

@baxx If I press backtick I get a backtick:-)

ah right, fair enough I've got some environment thing here then... do you have a command to grep all latex macros or anything as a default?

@DavidCarlisle: killall vi :D
Yeah, it's Vi - Bashing - Day @PauloCereda:-P

@baxx no I just always have latex.ltx in an emacs buffer and look in there (but I'm not a typical user: I almost never use tex for typesetting documents:-)

@ChristianHupfer They see me vim'in', they hattin'.

4:18 PM
right no worries then :)
just incase of curiosity this is what I meant sendvid.com/k0p74mzr

A small palindrome .... :-(
@PauloCereda Yes, that's fully justified ;-)

Both of these :

`\Large Question`
`\Large{ Question } `

Cause the rest of the page to have large font, is there something I'm missing?

@baxx \Large does not take an argument. You need to use a scope, like {\Large Question}.

@PauloCereda ah yes , thanks

5:00 PM
Oh OK I'll wait outside

@percusse LOL

@PauloCereda stupid windoze
@PauloCereda Do you follow this duck thingy? whattheduck.net

@percusse OMG

@PauloCereda There goes another 10 seconds of your day

@percusse Writing a script to fetch all comics while we speak.

5:08 PM
which probably takes more time than checking them one by one

@percusse Done and already fetching them. :)

5:20 PM
@PauloCereda Did you crash the site? I cannot access due to some error. Nevermind, now it works.

It sure did for me :-)

My desk has my keyboard in a lower part, where no cat can reach. :)

7:58 PM
@PauloCereda -- i guess you've never opened a drawer or a cabinet, and had a cat jump out ...

@barbarabeeton Every single time. :) Specially Fubá. :)
Oh I mispelled a word. Sorry! :)

@barbarabeeton Several times. :) Where's the cat?

@RomainPicot Huh??? 66 answers... yeah .... I wait for your 666 devilish number :D

Q: List/Itemize with image bullets

user2692669I want to have something like bullets but with images, I found an example but it doesn't align quite well. The text should be aligned to the center of the image and the image (preferably it's center) should be align to the other paragraphs. This is a contrast of the wrong and the right result:

@user2692669 Please use the force to produce a working example on your question....

@ChristianHupfer Will do

@ChristianHupfer in some times it will be reached I hope

8:21 PM
@PauloCereda: Shall I become a full TUG member and become a candidate for the next elections... what does the magic eight ball say? ;-)
@RomainPicot Ten answers a day --- by the end of the year you will have 666 answers ;-)

yo'
@ChristianHupfer Yes for the 1st question, and it gets blurry when it reaches the 2nd one :)

@yo' If I get elected you will be evicted :-P

@ChristianHupfer Does it required answers that could be used or not?
@ChristianHupfer I can write ten answers but if they are useless...

@RomainPicot Useful answers? No, not necessary at all :-P
2

yo'
@ChristianHupfer oh no!

8:25 PM
@ChristianHupfer Easy so :-P

@yo' Well, seriously: I will probably transform my Dante - only membership to a joint TUG - Dante - membership, after my free TUG account ends ...

yo'
@ChristianHupfer there's 3 months left to start solving these issues. No need to hurry :)

@yo' You forgot: I am a German.... we plan anything five years in advance

@ChristianHupfer In 2010, you said that you would tell us this today

yo'
@ChristianHupfer ah yeah. I just had a Dutch guy visiting me for 3 days. He spoke about the good old days in the 80s when he was visiting Czechia and importing illegal stuff here (books and such). He said: Your humour sensor drops to zero when you cross boundary to Germany, and it reaches maximum as soon as you pass the border control! :D

8:31 PM
@egreg -- on paulo's keyboard, i think.

@StefanKottwitz Yes, I look into the code sequence of \pi = 3.14159.... it's written there what I planned in 2010 ;-)

Hello

@yo' He must meant the Czech border patrol :-P

@ChristianHupfer Demo ready, but this is just an example, no need to build upon that.

yo'
@ChristianHupfer sure. They stopped every returning Czech to check what he imports. But would you stop for a long time and annoy a "rich" Dutch genleman? :-)
@barbarabeeton very likely so :)

8:33 PM
@ChristianHupfer Hold on, I will bring Psmith. :)

My TikZ opacity doesn't work on main thesis, but when I do MWE it works. Any idea what could be?

@barbarabeeton :) Yes, he's not in the closet.

@barbarabeeton My cat loves to sleep near my ducks. :)

@G.Bay paper thickness?
@G.Bay make a top-down MWE instead of bottom-up

!!/help

8:34 PM
lol, paper thickness? How is that, i simply never heard of such option

@G.Bay make a copy, reduce it step by step, for an MWE
@G.Bay you can get transparency with very thin paper :-)

hmm, i'v tried that, it seems to related to main preamble or so

@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: Good afternoon! I'm Psmith, the friendly TeX bot - the p in my name is silent, as in pshrimp. I'm here as a companion to our fellow users in the typographic land. As you probably noticed, I always reply under Paulo's account, but do not despair, I say, my replies are always preceded by my own name. Enjoy your stay at TeX.sx! If you need any help, just ask our chat residents. Cheerio!

@yo' Romanian border patrols didn't bother about rich or not: they annoyed everybody in the same way.

!!/eightball Should @ChristianHupfer run for president? :)
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: I'm too busy thinking about ducks to answer right now.
WAT

8:36 PM
its just so much stuff, I have no idea what could be causing the problem

yo'
@egreg maybe that why Romania haven't woken up yet.

@G.Bay make an MWE with the complete preamble, check if it occurs. Comment out a line in the preamble, check again. Repeat ... you will find the responsible line

!!/cricket
Psmith, the TeX bot, in fixed font mode: Let's take a look at the last cricket results:

- England 56 * v Pakistan 523/8
- Sri Lanka 250/2 * v West Indies
- India 247/9  v South Africa 225/10 *
- Warriors 276/7  v Dolphins 230/10 *
- Cricket Australia XI v Western Australia
- Nepal Under-19s v Papua New Guinea Under-19s
- Uganda Under-19s v United States of America Under-19s

Our cricket expert David might explain these results later on.

@StefanKottwitz Bingo! It was the SVG package, just dunno why, but removing it fix it. I must admit I'm not even sure if I'm using svg images directly so :X

8:53 PM
@PauloCereda Somebody bribed the eight-ball :-(

@ChristianHupfer Try for yourself, I have a good feeling this time. :)

@G.Bay Great that you found it!

@PauloCereda No ... I will remain an unimportant TUG member

@ChristianHupfer :(
!!/eightball Is @ChristianHupfer our future president?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: no. And don't be mean to David, he is my friend.
Ouch.
Stupid bot.
!!/eightball Can we rely on your information?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: lalalala can't hear you now lalalala

9:14 PM
@PauloCereda :-D

@Johannes_B :)
!!/eightball Is my cat naughty?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: only when pink elephants learn to fly.
:)

@PauloCereda For one moment I read .... can't bear you :D. There is a little spot on my screen :D, exactly on the 'h'

@ChristianHupfer oh no! :)
!!/eightball Is there a little spot on Christian's screen?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: If i recall correctly, yes.

@ChristianHupfer The \sqbullet answer should not be deleted.

@egreg I was unhappy with it

9:21 PM
@ChristianHupfer Don't be.

@egreg You answered it already, it doesn't need my 'solution'

@ChristianHupfer The mathabx fonts are not bad in general; one should only be aware that the symbola are somewhat different from the CM ones, but not as different as MnSymbol's.

!!/eightball are you here?

@DavidCarlisle Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: certainly not.

@PauloCereda logical paradox ^^^^

9:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle oooh clearly a feature. :)

@DavidCarlisle I doubt this will ever happen again... ^^^

cfr
@Johannes_B I once came across an application which claimed to solve this problem, so I downloaded and installed it. The idea was that it detected random typing and locked the machine in response. To unlock it, you just had to convince it you were a human being. Sadly, I was unable to do this, so I had to remove the application. But it might work for a genuine human.

@cfr Our cats are smart. :)

@PauloCereda mine seem to run round in circles bash in to things and try to eat each others heads, is that normal?

@DavidCarlisle They are playing! :)

@ChristianHupfer Really? How nice! Do you have a feline companion?

@PauloCereda No, not right now -- In Germany a landlord can forbide to keep animals in a flat/appartment. :-(

@Kurt Closing with exactly the reasons you gave: I vote for closing because this was identified blabla... -- in my opinion

@ChristianHupfer well, I'll wait for a second opinion, okay?

@Kurt No problem at all... I can live with this question being open... I don't use TeXMaker and all those 'editors' anyway

@ChristianHupfer :-) Well, I use TeXnicCenter or WinEDT, but in most cases not the editor is the problem, it is the code and the ignoring of resulting warnings (sometimes not shown in the editor ...)

@Kurt WinEdt.... ah yes, I used that one when I started with LaTeX in 1997 -- for some days on Win95 (:D) and then installed Linux because I've been using that at the university already, starting with emacs ... I never changed back and I don't even use auc-tex

10:19 PM
@ChristianHupfer Well, I'm a edv trainer and therefore I need windows. I used unix when I was studing ... I think, it is always only of a question of the choice of the real tool. Sometimes unix or linux fits better to the work, sometimes windows. I'm also teaching Word. I do note hate it, I just want to use the best tool for the work. For example people to repair a bycicle one should not use tolls for the car ...

@Kurt True -- Although I work as a teacher now I can use my own notebook and prevent Windows as much as possible

@ChristianHupfer Ah, I see. And your students? Do they use windows or linux?

@Kurt Well, some of them use Linux as part of their IT subject, but I don't teach them to do programming etc. I use beamer presentations for Math or Physics. Sometimes I show GeoGebra or let them work with GeoGebra in the computer lab (that's windows then, of course )
Ok, it's late here... Have a nice time
