A quite amusing scenario: I have a paper with beramono set as monospaced font. In every place where I have accented words typeset in monospaced (say \texttt{árvore}) in the printed document, they appear with surrounded by a block. In PDF preview, nothing shows up. I printed with Evince, xpdf and Okular - same output. Then I tried to print the document to a CUPS PDF printer, then later on print on paper - the bounding box is gone.

I've had a horrid day trying to prettify memoir \pagenotes. Too liberal with expandable glue - even \@esphack didn't work.

But now I'm too tired even to cut it down to an MWE in order to ask. #enfadonhice

I did the Reno valley, where the first railway from Bologna to Florence across the Apennines was built, completed in 1864; it's still operational, but just for local traffic.
