Q: problem with macro using \ifx

Nat Kuhn[Edit 1] originally titled "can't understand why this simple macro causes complex error" [original post] I've written a book, and now I'm trying to produce the e-book using tex4ht. Adapting this post, I introduced the following macro: \newcommand{\gpifpdf}[2]{\ifx\HCode\UnDef{#1}\else{#2}\fi} ...

This has come up before (TeX conditionals don't require braces around the branches): do we have a potential dupe?

Q: 4 'off-topic' close votes for my question on Texmaker

Franck DernoncourtI see that my question Prevent Texmaker from stealing focus after compiling a LaTeX document? received 4 close votes, all arguing that the question is off-topic on this StackExchange. I also see on http://tex.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic that "Related software and tools, BibTeX, MakeIndex, Ly...

Thoughts please, particularly from anyone who voted to close the question under discussion

9:08 AM
@egreg If you want (or need) rep, you may post an answer to this tex.stackexchange.com/questions/196014/….

1 hour later…
10:09 AM
@PauloCereda probably you would have preferred it if mercedes had promised you a free nintendo?

10:25 AM
@DavidCarlisle :)

11:09 AM
Guys, do you have any suggestions for a visual representation of EOF? It might be any symbol.

11:25 AM
@PauloCereda EOF

@DavidCarlisle It's what I'm using right now. :)

@PauloCereda great minds think alike

@DavidCarlisle :)

2 hours later…
1:39 PM
@JosephWright Very comprehensive... in line with my thoughts on voting to close.
I thought it was related to binary-changes in the software... which leads to feature-request-related.

2:15 PM
Hey, i just got the pundit badge :-)

2:53 PM
I'm late to vote.

@PauloCereda ???

@JosephWright I still have 40 votes. :)

3:14 PM
A quite amusing scenario: I have a paper with beramono set as monospaced font. In every place where I have accented words typeset in monospaced (say \texttt{árvore}) in the printed document, they appear with surrounded by a block. In PDF preview, nothing shows up. I printed with Evince, xpdf and Okular - same output. Then I tried to print the document to a CUPS PDF printer, then later on print on paper - the bounding box is gone.

3:56 PM
@JosephWright Hmm, I'm in Istanbul at present. There appears to be some kind of EU Chemists meeting (EUCHEM) here at the hotel. Are you here?

Holidays officially ended. :(

@egreg Oh no!
@Brent.Longborough ooh get some free explosives for us. :)

All you need is some iodine crystals and strong ammonia

O.o
Get today your copy of "The anarchist cookbook", now entirely typeset in TeX and Friends! 100% more TikZ images!

Just don't let the result dry out; it's really sensitive (I've used it to scare flies when they land on it)
@PauloCereda Where, where!?

4:01 PM
@Brent.Longborough :)

I've had a horrid day trying to prettify memoir \pagenotes. Too liberal with expandable glue - even \@esphack didn't work.
But now I'm too tired even to cut it down to an MWE in order to ask. #enfadonhice
@PauloCereda I'll send the NSA, GCHQ, and Dilma's mobile phone network after you, you naughty boy!

@PauloCereda On the other hand I could do a nice tour on my way back to home.
@1010011010 I don't need rep, of course. :) But I provided the answer.

@Brent.Longborough LOL You saw what happened to Campos, right? :P
@egreg Yay! :)

@PauloCereda Indeed I did. The BBC pronounced Guarujá "Garroo-ha" as if it were Castilian. Bunch of ignoramuses. Or lions led by donkeys.
Oh dear, it just occurred to me that I might get arrested for posting a recipe for explosives on teh Internetz.

@Brent.Longborough Speaking of BBC, I'm now addicted to QI. :)

4:11 PM
@PauloCereda Oh, yes, one of its few redeeming features.

@Brent.Longborough Is there a way to make David join? :) It would be awesome.

@PauloCereda Personally, I'm in love with Ronni Ancona. I'm sure it'll end in tears.
@PauloCereda We could ask GCHQ to send a SWAT team round to his pub.

@Brent.Longborough Oh she's lovely. :) I like Jo Brand's sarcasm so much, and also Sarah Millican. But I might say one of my favourites is Sue Perkins. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I'm also in love with Sue Perkins

@Brent.Longborough :)

4:42 PM

@cgnieder Caffeine and pizza into bugs.

@egreg :)

@cgnieder Story of my life. :)
@egreg 99 bugs in the code. I fixed one, 101 bugs in the code. :)

@PauloCereda :)
@PauloCereda lol

@JosephWright ah ok. Haven't heard of Quack for ages :)
Btw, this really hurts:
@tohecz - it comes from a document my professor gave us to learn latex. I think he received it from a friend of his. — SOULed_Outt yesterday

4:47 PM
Guys, I'm offering a bounty to Mark:

Q: Theory of Mind Type Figure

user64066I am trying to draw this picture. I have produced multiple balloons etc., but it would be nice to produce exactly same figure. In case my primitive code may help someone, I am also adding it below: \documentclass[12pt]{article} \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary{calc,shapes.callouts,shapes.ar...

@tohecz oh my

@cgnieder yep, this.

@tohecz Troll professor. :)

@PauloCereda well, are questions about how to teach LaTeX teachers how to teach LaTeX on topic?

@tohecz one for meta.meta.meta, I guess. :)

4:51 PM
@tohecz Probably use InDesign now

@tohecz lol What I don't really get: any professor surely tells his students which books to read in addition to his/her lecture. Why then not do the same for other topics such as LaTeX?

@cgnieder my LaTeX teacher did that

@tohecz Of course there are good teachers! :)

5:20 PM
@tohecz What paper was it that you were reviewing? Is it already published or on arXiv?

@HenriMenke what do you mean?

@tohecz If I recall it correctly, it was you reviewing the paper featuring Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger, etc.

@HenriMenke ah no, not reviewing, typesetting ;)

@tohecz And I thought you and cgnieder were referring to it.

@HenriMenke nono. I'm a sci journal typesetter

5:24 PM
@tohecz For which journal?

@HenriMenke it's quite unknown, Acta Polytechnica. It's typeset by our university

@tohecz Ah, I know it. My boss has published there.

@HenriMenke really? cool

@tohecz I hope he's not the Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger-guy :)

@HenriMenke I can check, but even if he were, I shouldn't name him
@HenriMenke I checked now. His article was very well prepared ;) And this special issue is there every year and I consider it of the highest quality in the journal.

5:32 PM
@tohecz Oh! I will forward your praise :)

@HenriMenke he's the first author?

@tohecz Indeed.
@tohecz I'm doing different research, though.

@HenriMenke what exactly?

@tohecz I research the behaviour of population transport around exceptional points in spectra of the hydrogen atom. If you want further info, see my thesis.

@HenriMenke That's too tough for me :D

5:43 PM
@tohecz I can't imagine that. At last, according to your profile, you're a Maths Ph.D. student.

@HenriMenke Now that's a proper captcha text

@HenriMenke yep, I am. But I do quite a different sort of maths than functional analysis and related topics.

@tohecz If you boil it down, my thesis reduces to solving an ODE, namely (4.17).

@HenriMenke well, that knows to be tough (cf. Smoothness of Navier-Stokes equation)

@tohecz Isn't Navier-Stokes a system of coupled PDEs?

5:50 PM
@HenriMenke it is, yep

6:03 PM
@JosephWright Compiling a basic ConTeXt document with \input expl3-generic gives errors :(

duck is:question -> 20 results
duck is:answer -> 59 results
@PauloCereda ^^^^

Good MAEN ;-)

6:33 PM
@ChristianHupfer hi there

6:55 PM
@Manuel Going to need an example/expl3 version: working here at the 'burning edge' with
\input expl3-generic %
\starttext
Hello world
\stoptext
MkII doesn't search the tex/latex part of the tree, so testing there has to be done 'by hand'

cfr
@percusse I particularly objected to somebody shooting other people in the feet.

@JosephWright Technically I'm compiling with context… I tell you in a few minutes.
@JosephWright True, it works. I don't know why I had the problem before.

@PauloCereda 325 for a tour day isn't bad, is it?
@PauloCereda I went in the mountains near Bologna, but not really near to Monghidoro. I did the Reno valley, where the first railway from Bologna to Florence across the Apennines was built, completed in 1864; it's still operational, but just for local traffic. A masterwork of engineering. It even has a spiral tunnel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porrettana_railway

7:32 PM
@cfr As far as I remember, it was his/her own feet.
Detexify ?

8:05 PM
@egreg ooh that sounds very cool!

@PauloCereda And I stopped to eat in a funny place where on Fridays evening they prepare “moules frites à la normande”. I'm very tempted to do a two day tour for tasting them.

Q: Why did Shostakovich not release his 4th, but did release his 5th symphony?

AkivaWhy did Shostakovich not release his 4th, but did release his 5th symphony? (The 4th was released eventually, just not when it was written)

Because it was too bad even for him? ;-)

@egreg Not that bad I would say (compared to other pieces). I like the 9th though

8:52 PM
@percusse Shostakovich's music goes from ugly to appallingly ugly.

@egreg Argh, that hurts. At least you would say OK to 11th no? That's the most mainstream one.
If that's ugly, what's Stravinsky? :P

@percusse Sorry, but I think he wrote 15 symphonies too many.
@percusse Who?

@egreg Point taken :)

1 hour later…
10:13 PM
@percusse Very neat. I wonder if they are making the recognition data public?
And I doubt it's using DeTeXify; that tool is a bit too customized for LaTeX-specific things
(rather, TeX-specific)

10:50 PM
@SeanAllred It's the same machine learning principle I reckon
But I'm sure they got the idea from Detexify

@percusse Oh of course, but all that data has to go somewhere :)

Knowing how ridiculously good machine learning crew they have, they were probably missing the idea

@percusse It is.

@PauloCereda ;)
Good night all

11:10 PM
@percusse Night, sir! :)

Any font-latex gurus about? I have a bunch of regular expressions that I've no idea what to do with… regex101.com/r/fX6lV0/4

11:33 PM
@SeanAllred If you want to solve a problem with regex, you end up with two problems. :)

@PauloCereda This is my life. This is my struggle. T_T
