@AndrewStacey I saw those to, but couldn't figure out correct offsets.

4:50 AM
@AndrewStacey x and y coordinates seem to be treated differently. The following code partially draws the right thing:
\begin{pgfonlayer}{back}
\makeatletter
\pgf@matrix@offset
\pgfgetlastxy\ck@shift@x\ck@shift@y
\begin{scope}[shift={(\ck@shift@x,\ck@shift@y+0.3333em)}]
\foreach \row in {1,...,4} {
    \foreach \col in {1,...,4} {
        \pgfmathparse{Mod(\row + \col,2) ? "red" : "blue"}
        \colorlet{sqbg}{\pgfmathresult}
        \fill[sqbg]
            (\csname pgf@matrix@minx\col\endcsname - \csname pgf@matrix@maxx\col\endcsname, \csname pgf@matrix@miny\row\endcsname - \csname pgf@matrix@maxy\row\endcsname)
minx/miny seem to correspond to the used anchor of the node (base in this case)
maxx and maxy seem to denote different things though

@FaheemMitha I just cut-and-pasted what you put in that paste bin, ran lualatex foo.tex and it worked as I expected. There were no errors. There was also no output, but that was because there were no files with name toinput.... So I put in a load of such files, toinput<n>.tex containing Now including file <n>\par (with <n> ranging from 0 to 10) and got what I expected: a PDF with lots of lines saying Now including file <n> (but not in the numerical order!).
@MartinScharrer What do you want? A medal? If you really want to slow it down, throw in some font changes using unicode-math. Actually, I'm going to time how long my lectures take to compile just to see if it is comparable! See you in a couple of hours.

Thanks for checking.

@FaheemMitha So are you still getting errors?

@AndrewStacey : Yes, nothing has changed since yesterday.
@AndrewStacey : Yes, nothing has changed since yesterday.
Why doesn't my message appear in the right place.

@FaheemMitha That is really strange then. What OS are you on, which version of lualatex, and what version of lua?
@FaheemMitha (Which message, and where should it have appeared? Everything looks right from my end.)

@AndrewStacey : I was having some weird display issues. I disconnected and reconnected and it looks ok now.
@AndrewStacey : Debian squeeze. This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.60.2-2010070110 (rev 3730)
Part of texlive-latex-base 2009-11
Is this lua? ii liblua50 5.0.3-4 Main interpreter library for the Lua 5.0 programming language
I've got some stuff for lua 5.0 and 5.1 installed. Not sure how to see which one luatex is using.
funny, luatex doesn't have a dependency on lua.
Maybe another Debian user can check this?
@AndrewStacey: Never mind, it works. Sorry for the noise.

8:33 AM
@FaheemMitha Any idea what the problem was? I'm intrigued now!

@AndrewStacey It's embarrassing. I just tried lualatex foo.tex "again" and it worked. Then I looked at what I had typed yesterday. I thought I was typing lualatex foo.tex, but apparently I was typing lualatex inputall.lua (hence the quotes around again). I think I must have been asleep on my feet.

@Caramdir This is one of those that I just want to get right! My current code can be seen at math.ntnu.no/~stacey/HowDidIDoThat/LaTeX/MatrixBackground.html and here's the picture:
I've cut it down to specifying a style on the matrix and then a following command. It would be great to be able to eliminate one of those. The style is there essentially to record the name and inner sep of the matrix as these don't seem to be available after the matrix is drawn. But one needs to be careful with remembering these, as the same pgf keys get used for the inner nodes in the matrix.
But the main command does have to be executed after the matrix is drawn since it refers to information that is only known once the matrix has been figured out. I guess that this doesn't technically have to be after the matrix has been actually drawn, but figuring out how and where to put a hook is beyond me!

How do we feel about l33tisms like "plz" (or is that a lolcatism?) I can find more reasons to discourage them than to allow them. The major reason for discouragement being that I find them annoying.

@MatthewLeingang I find them irritating too. But there's a serious issue here about how much editing we should allow ourselves to do. Fixing typos, marking code, removing greetings... fine. but would removing these expressions fall under that sort of "housekeeping"?

12:18 PM
@Seamus I wouldn't go so far as to edit them out but I'd kind of like to have a policy saying "we use fairly standard English to be accessible to the largest number of people" [that we can be with a single language.]
On the other hand one could say we should remain accessible to people who only know lolcat English...and that I'm trying to form policy around my pet peeves...

@MatthewLeingang The thing is leaving comments on questions saying "please write better English" is going to be alienating.

@Seamus I agree which is why I went here instead. :-P

I think this could be a good questions for meta...

@Seamus yeah...but I should be doing other things right now. Maybe later when I cool off.

12:33 PM
@MatthewLeingang: Did you had a chance to try the \Alt macro I coded for you? I coded a \Temporal macro in the meantime for a similar question. I'm planning to make some code improvements on it and send it to Till Tantau as feature suggestion.

Q: Stack Exchange is immunodeficient

Tim PostIf you create a community with the idea that it will become a living, breathing entity - you need to give it an immune system to help fight off infection. Stack Exchange does a better job of this than most other Q&A platforms, but I see the following as areas that can be improved: Reject an...

@Caramdir Whoops! Fixed now, thanks.

@AndrewStacey great!

@Caramdir If you have any suggestions on how to improve it ... be my guest!

Is it possible to add a postaction to the labelcells key and have it execute \labelcells?
There is \pgf@matrix@colum@sep@<column> which might be useful, but no equivalent for rows (as the matrix is constructed row-wise, it is not needed in the pgf code).

Q: Upgrading PGF without tex-package manager

jrandHi everyone, I don't use MiKTeX or any other package managers. I usually install new styles/libraries by adding the .sty file to the same directory as the .tex file and compile using pdflatex. I figured out I have pgf version 2.0 and want to upgrade to version 2.10. I already tried doing texhas...

I have two things to say: First, looks like a duplicate of "Upgrading TikZ". Secondly, do we have a "do not do that" tag? (For putting the style files in the same directory as the .tex file every time).
Here's another that could do with a little attention: duplicate needs closing, and I suspect we have this question already on this site, unless the footnote bit makes a difference.

Q: how to show ~(tilde) in footnote?

RichardHi, I can show ~(tilde) in normal text, using text as follows, \begin{quote} \verb|~| \end{quote} But the problem is when I try to put this in footnote{}. Error will be thrown, how should I do this? Thanks

I now found a way to fill out the CTAN upload form from a Makefile:
0
A: Load website and fill form from the command line

Martin ScharrerI solved this now using a Greasemonkey script which copies the URL parameters to the form. The Makefile calls firefox with the URL including the parameters. This works for my needs. Some refinements would be needed for more complex input, i.e. some URL encoding. User Script: // ==UserScript== ...

Sometimes I have smaller updates of more than one of my packages and filling out the form with mostly constant data all the time annoyed me.
