do you think it would make sense for the second input of ZO to be the numeric formats that are accepted by XO? Then if it's char, you use a custom format?

@Suever Good idea! That makes sense. For ZO (datevec) we will lose the V = datevec(S,P) signature, but it doens't matter much because V = datevec(S,F,P) can still be used.

For YO the second numeric input representing a format string could only be used in the two-input case, to avoid conflict with the N = datenum(Y,MO,D)` case. But the case N = datenum(S,F,P) is not supported by Octave anyway, so again it doesn't matter much.
