12:05 AM
Doesn't makes sense to me as I don't know what "packet" is.

packet
A bit verbose, but:
In computer networking, a packet is a formatted unit of data carried by a packet mode computer network. Computer communications links that do not support packets, such as traditional point-to-point telecommunications links, simply transmit data as a series of bytes, characters, or bits alone. When data is formatted into packets, the bitrate of the communication medium can be better shared among users than if the network were circuit switched. Packet framing A packet consists of two kinds of data: control information and user data (also known as payload). The control information provid...

That's what I said.

you catch on fast :)

I should have learned that at university.
It proves that something sucked.

@KyleCronin Wow - that's some low loss

12:12 AM
higher than 0

@KyleCronin That's even more impressive if it's a flood.

but you're right, probably not as justifiably significant as the problems you were noting

@JasonSalaz especially for TCP where it will retry if one in a sequence is lost.
You really need high lossage to cause errors - low losses (5 to 10%) just make for slow throughput
instead of .5 %

yeah, I know.
Hence why I said
1 min ago, by Jason Salaz
but you're right, probably not as justifiably significant as the problems you were noting

Thanks folks for the ping tests.

12:16 AM
is that internet connection to your house?

12:40 AM
@KyleCronin Yes.

and you're serving at least one website from there, judging by the domain
I've considered serving stuff on my residential connection, but I'm wary about the reliability

@KyleCronin I have three servers here at the moment. One is actual production work (the URL I linked) until I set up it's permanent home on Amazon or some other hosted solution.
I've had less than 30 minutes of down time since January - two of them were self inflicted. Only one was a 25 minute routing outage. I do pay for business class internet and have gotten business class response times.
I had the router fail when I was at home and had to power cycle it. They had a tech on site with a replacement modem less than 3 hours after I called them. Even though it was stable after the reboot - it failed twice and they could see errors on the hardware and were very accommodating at scheduling the work immediately - same day.
The service from comcast is night and day - and I'm happy being on the business class day side of things.

@bmike yeah, the reliability of the internet connection itself is only part of the problem - I'd worry that I'd be stupid and saturate the connection, fill up the routing table, mess around with the cables et
what kind of speeds/pings times do you get?

(and pingdom will wake me 24/7 if the web server isn't responsive to web traffic - so I've got a close eye on my network connection these days.)
@KyleCronin Our speed isn't as good as it should be - we need to run a new cable under the street to the local loop. We're in the 20-40 MBps range up and down right now. We ran a temporary cable during install and should be well into the 60's once the winter freeze is over and they can run a cable under the street.

@bmike (Hmm... it'll wake you 24/7?)

12:50 AM
pings are less than 50ms to most data-center connected sites on the continent.
@TimothyMuellerHarder iOS app alerts with SMS fallback.
It's a free service for what I need - I'm really happy with pingdom and will likely upgrade to a business account once I have more than one monitor needed.

@bmike Yeah, I was just commenting on your curious phrasing. Sort of sounds like that if the site's down, it'll keep you awake constantly until it goes back up.

@TimothyMuellerHarder That's the plan. ;-)

@bmike then it's settled, you're hosting the Skype calls for the podcast now :)

@JasonSalaz Since you obviously have more than 200 rep, simply joining any other SE site will bump up that decimal by one.
...I think.

@KyleCronin I'm game to try ;-)

1:01 AM
@KyleCronin What podcast is this?

Evening all.

@TimothyMuellerHarder the Ask Different Podcast I do with Jason and Nathan
and hopefully bmike
@jaberg hello

@KyleCronin I'm banned until I get a better mike - you think with a name like bmike, i'd have a good mike

@bmike Come on over and use mine. ;)

@bmike which reminds me, I have to send you an email about that. what's your budget?

1:06 AM
@jaberg Ya gotta bring your own cans though. Nobody uses my headphones. ;)

@KyleCronin less than 200 - but I'm all about bang/$ - when spending another 50 is substantially better, i can usually justify (self talk myself into it) the expense. I'll have to think where i would record. The quietest room is far from the base station and I don't think I can run ethernet.

I've been using a Samson CO1U (with shock mount and "Ikea" arm) very happily for some time now. I'd like to get a Heil, but I can't really justify it.

@jaberg the real expense with a Heil is not the mic itself, but the audio interface, the preamp so you don't get a lot of noise, the shock mount, the pop filter, etc
comparatively speaking, the mic itself is cheap :)

Kyle: Just so you don't embarrass yourself I'm a former audio engineer who's done work for Bob Heil Sound.

wow, neat

1:13 AM
But you are 100% correct.

but I don't think I embarrassed myself

You did not.

this is actually super awesome, what work did you do for Heil?

Just scutt work for the live sound division. When I was a kid. (I grew up in Chicago).

nice. I've only become recently familiar with them after seeing a bunch of recommendations for the PR 40, so I got one for myself

1:16 AM
Anyhow, it's my complete disinterest in purchasing an analog interface (at least at this time) that keeps me plugging away on the Samson. And truthfully, as a podcast mic, it's just fine.

great mic, but the whole setup ended up costing me a LOT of $ that I retrospectively shouldn't have spent

@KyleCronin If only Bob Heils Guide to Concert Sound were available as an ePub.

@jaberg any experience with the Rode Podcaster? Nearly all of Dan Benjamin's co-hosts use the mic and he seems to get great sound from it

I have several Sure SM-58's that could easily substitute for the PR40 in your current setup. Only problem being you have to "eat" them. They're live stage vocal mics with a notable proximity effect.
@KyleCronin No direct experience but it has a good rep.
(Also, I do know that it's Shure audio. I just can't type.)

@jaberg Jason uses a SM-58 with an X2U and it works quite well

1:19 AM
Lots of server timeout notices tonight. Is that what you guys were discussing earlier?

yeah, I'm seeing it too

@KyleCronin It's a truly classic mic.
So long as it's not on my end. I have enough to deal with tonight.

@jaberg I bought an SM-48 from Guitar Center for $30 and was not impressed, though I'm sure that being 3X more expensive the SM-58 has better sound
but you're right about the proximity effect and all that
I was spoiled by my Heil so much so that it took me a while to realize that what I was hearing was proximity effect on the SM-48 when I used it

>>>THE VOICE OF gOD<<<
Add a little reverb and start your own cargo cult.

the C01U is a condenser, right?

1:25 AM
USB condenser. Powered right off the USB bus.

right
how's the background noise/echo on it?

Never had any complaints, but I can generally control the environment.
We could do a test run sometime and you can tell me what you think. I
ve never podcasted per say, but I've used it to attend chat meetings, give web presos, etc. Most of the time my audio gets a thumbs up.

do you have a recording?

Not on hand. But I can whip one up tomorrow.
(In my free time, when I

no rush

1:28 AM
'm not reworking my article, going to the genius bar, listening to MBW, etc.)
;)

I'm not impressed with the Blue mics, and they're condensers, but before I write off the entire technology I should give some others a listen

@KyleCronin Thanks! Just answered you there. No big on the italics/bold. Went non-ital because it's the equiv of using itals in a regular paragraph. If it looks better bolded, I won't argue.

well, what you did is the established standard, I just have always found it to look odd

If that's the worst thing an editor ever does to me I'm in good shape. ;)

@jaberg Somewhat redundant...

1:36 AM
well I'm not really an editor, just someone that is trying to get some good content on the blog
@TimothyMuellerHarder some USB devices are externally powered. his first statement indicated that the audio data was transferred over USB, his second statement indicated that USB supplied the power as well

@KyleCronin I know I'm being nitpicky, but I was referring to "USB bus" being redundant. Given what USB stands for.

Good point. I knew a bunch of people that pedantic at MIT too. So I'm used to it.

well, if one were to be pedantic, isn't the bus the data transfer mechanism? the mic would be powered through the USB connector, but strictly speaking not the bus itself

I would argue that the power is buss supplied.

I think I agree with @KyleCronin.
The bus is what "buses" the data between the computer and device, and other wires inside the port power it.

1:43 AM
actually, looks like I might be wrong on that one. from Wikipedia on bus (computing):
> An attribute generally used to characterize a bus is that power is provided by the bus for the connected hardware. This conceptualization emphasizes the busbar origins of bus architecture as supplying switched or distributed power.

Oh, well then. ~shrugs~

Yup.
;)

Guess you were right—good call. :)
(Also, has anyone ever told you that you look like Simon from the Yogscast?)
(Sorry if that's stalker-y...)

Whatya know. My engineering degree (well, the 3/4 that I have) is good for winning arguments on the internet. ;) No, I haven't heard that one, but @stuffe accused me of looking like Gandalf in my last avatar.
My photo is up there. Doesn't seem like stalking if someone looks at it.

Yeah, but still...
I dunno.

1:47 AM
hey everyone! look at this photo!

You're the one that has to live with your decision, not me. But I see nothing wrong with viewing the profiles and photos that accompany them.
Thank goodness I'd washed my faced. That was at the "man burn" at Burning Man three or four years ago--after a day-long, whiteout/dust storm.

I was wondering what the context was for that photo

The black leather jacket I'm wearing is pure white in the photo--and still shows signs of that dust to this day.

@jaberg Well, no, but… I guess I just think it's sort of strange that I, out of the blue, started talking to the person in a photo of someone I've never met before, on the internet, saying they looked like someone else I've never met before. That's all.

Ah, well no worries.

1:53 AM
Anyone have a suggestion for a tool to plot data with? iWork won't do it right; it sets each X value as a label rather than location on an axis, so all the data points are equally spaced. I have OmniGraphSketcher, which is great for graph-making, but very tedious to use to deal with points.
Mathematica's overkill.

Not my area of expertise, sorry.

Numbers should do that - make sure you're using the scatter graph

@KyleCronin I didn't say this, but I also want to interpolate a line.

you can add a trendline using the inspector

Oh, OK. Thanks.

1:58 AM
sure

2:23 AM
@KyleCronin Here's a quick-n-dirty mic test. I need to finish my pop screen. (The frame is sitting on the workbench waiting for a young lady to stop by and remove her silk stockings on my behalf.)

thanks
I don't have my headphones to listen properly (there's also a roommate playing music through the wall) but I'll give it a proper listen probably tomorrow

No worries. Did you grab a local copy?

yep
one thing that I did notice was that the levels on the left are much, much higher than on the right

(I probably should have done some typing or something in the background.

is this a stereo mic?
yeah, typing, as well as just a general ambient noise test

2:27 AM
No it isn't. And i noticed that in the piezo meters too. I need to look at the software more closely. I essentially, downloaded, opened and hit "record".
Like I said, quick and dirty. A lot like your average podcast participant. ;)

just curious, why did you download Piezo to record?
why not just use QuickTime?

Been wanting to try it. I could have used Quicktime, but if I needed to record a skypecast...

true, for recording app audio Rogue Amoeba's apps are good

Plus I'm a sucker for Braun design and VU meters. I'm old, remember.

@jaberg the VU meters are probably better than the indicators QuickTime gives you

2:33 AM
Something weird about the Samson--it seems biased to the left channel. Used to be driver software for it--will have to investigate.

does it have analog gain control?

Quicktime Test with typing and "quiet time"
No analog controls at all.
I should probably consider plugging it directly into the computer for recording though.
(Instead of through the USB hub)

good idea, I've had really weird issues sometimes plugging my audio interface into my USB hub
thanks, $20 no-name 10-port USB hub from Amazon!
how far are you away from the mic?

I rid myself of a lot of problems by buying a "good" Belkin hub for the desk--but it couldn't hurt. I'm on the Samson site now looking for details.
Mic is on an arm, sitting approx 2" from my mouth and slightly below (for the second recording)
For the first I was right into it.--probably 1". I realized position two was more realistic for a lengthy podcast recording session.

I think part of the problem with the problem I have with the Blue mics is that people like to set them on their desk a couple feet away from their mouths
the design of the mics leads people to believe that's OK

2:40 AM
Absolutely. As with cameras, give me mediocre gear but good technique any day.

do you get zero-latency monitoring?

I haven't messed with a monitoring setup. It hasn't been a problem in Skype chats, iChats, etc.
Interesting. Samson says it's a "left channel only" mic. The solution is to record in mono.
Makes sense--it's a single point mic. But I wonder why it was bleeding into the right channel.

I wonder why it doesn't just show up as a mono device?

Indeed
Just set it up as 1 input device in the Audio Devices manager. Let's see what happens…
Meters are showing a perfect mono recording--same signal, both channels.
Let me do one final test for ya....
You can toss the other two.

2:55 AM
ok

Audio MIDI Setup -- the control panel nobody knows about. ;)

except podcasters, who are in there all the time :)
working on an email to bmike with some mic recommendations, do you want me to send it to you as well?

Sure. jeff@purpleshark.com

it'll probably be about ~10 minutes

No problem.

3:09 AM

hm, maybe I should have mentioned the studio kit for the Rode Podcaster

3:38 AM
I'm sure he'll spot it if he goes searching.
I'm "done" for the night. Off to enjoy an hour of mindless entertainment before I collapse. Catch ya soon/

@KyleCronin bookmarked and noted - thanks so much!

@JasonSalaz I usually use a pair of Etymotics ER6 "buds" with earmolds. If an in-ear solution gets uncomfortable I switch to a workhorse pair of Sony MDR-7506 over ear monitors. The Sonys are more economical too. If I'm "out and about", I'm just as likely to use the J-Bud headset I use with my phone. Monitoring is not mastering.

12:07 PM
@daviesgeek If you can scrape together another $5 "@bmike style" the JLab J3 is available at Amazon. I used the headset model (with mic) as my EDC buds for over a year and was quite satisfied. Passed them on to my brother-law (with a new set of earpieces) when he broke his Apple headset. Sound is good. No-tangle "steel wrapped" cord is awesome. Mic clip broke--they all do. I switched to the "rugged" J4m model—but prefer the compactness of the 3, and never found reason to question its durability.
@daviesgeek Below $15–I once did a Headwize hack on a 12 pair of Koss buds that was okay but in this price range it's going to be hit or miss and I'd be hard pressed to recommend anything specific. The JLab J3 ($20) is kind of a diamond in the rough.
@daviesgeek I notice that the JLab J2 is $15. I've never even seen this model, much less listened to it, but based on the value I find the J3 to be, I'd say it's likely as good as you'll find, and better than most, at that price. However, the extra 5 bucks for the J3 no-tangle cable is money well spent for EDC. Forgot to mention (because I'd forgotten) that one of the connections in my first set of J3s went bad. JLab shipped me a replacement pair "no questions asked".

12:39 PM
Umm, I found a very neat answer to my question.
@gentmatt: hallöchen.
I found this and did it up to the 4th step. The problem doesn't happen anymore, at least not yet.
Should I answer my own question?

1:31 PM
@gentmatt That certainly plays off the myth that we (Apple users) are all mindless drones programmed by Cupertino and unable to make intelligent purchase decisions.

1 hour later…
2:54 PM
@Gigili Most of those steps are pretty generic (and some border on "voodoo") for the problem you describe. Personally, I'd hold back on answering the question—but you could edit the question to include a provisional "I've done this, this and this and so far things seem better.

@jaberg What about deleting the question?
Um, it has answers =\

Leave the question, if a moderator thinks it's not a good one, or enough people vote to close it, it may be removed, but unless that happens that it's left as useful for the next guy to have the same issue.

@Gigili There's no right or wrong, but I really like it when the OP (original poster) keeps the question clear and doesn't edit it for "updates". If you put your updates in an answer, it helps others know how you are attacking the problem and how it's evolving. People can then vote on the question separate from your progress towards solving it.
Since you can edit things, you may get better feedback on edits to the answer / comments than you would if you kept editing the question.
Also - you can use flags anytime you want a moderator to have a peek. You can flag and say you're uncertain if the question still fits and we can mark the flag as helpful and leave the question if we think it should stay. Bringing it up in chat and mentioning a moderator also works well. :-)

I'll defer to @bmike's wisdom on that one. :)

3:11 PM
@jaberg It's clearly an edge case. The question is vague and we like to have them a little better defined - I probably will try to find a screen shot of "it's dead" so other people searching for that term know they're in the same boat. The problem here is the error message is horribly broken for users needing help - for that reason, the question is vague and I'd like to see it stay around to help others.
Without that kernel of "this will be useful to others" - it might be more a candidate for deleting.
Even if lots of delete votes happened - my gut reaction would be to edit it into shape and try to keep it around for the answers it has already. But - it could change or we could have a better question some day and it gets deleted. Hard to know at this point

But personally I dislike answers that are "steps along the road", not a destination. I prefer the steps be listed in the form of a comment (or as part of the question if carried out by the OP) that are gathered as an answer once it becomes obvious that they've worked.

It's really your guys' call - I just push the broom around and clean up things as a moderator.

@bmike I'll do that. I'll add the screenshot I took last night to the question and will answer it. Thank you for

Off to the genius bar to see if they take mercy on me. (Battery swap #5 in my MBP.) Actually, hoping to get a ruling on whether or not something is wrong with the charging system itself.
Last thought—as I think it through, there's nothing inherently wrong with an answer consisting of steps so long as it is clearly identified as being non-conclusive.
Okay, off the Apple Store. Later gators.

As for the steps in the blog I posted, I've done first and two but didn't help.

3:18 PM
@jaberg I totally agree - it's always better to have a hard, fast, this is what worked.
But, on SE/SO/AD - we can take some months and edits to get to that point. Answering and saying explicitly, I'm learning and not sure this is totally correct, but it's working is a necessary step to total awesomeness.

I was about to dual boot Windows, I couldn't work around. After some minutes, it froze and I had to use force shut down.
Thank you anyway.

@Gigili Thanks for asking. Keep coming back with your questions - it's important to get ones from experts like me and @jaberg, but it's also very important to have ones from you and anyone else that's confused and wants to learn, no matter where your level of systems knowledge lies.

4:07 PM
@bmike - I think I made the edits you suggested. I hope I did that right.

Q: How do I get a single keystroke systemwide to trigger the aforementioned preview of Markdown text?

Let's face it, I'd love to receive the gift swag.
Just saw the blog post.
Do I have any chance?
As a new user.

@Gigili Yes - my reading of the contest is there is no limit to the schwag reward in thanks for contribution to the site. The iPod winner of course is a raffle, so that aspect might be more or less likely based on participation.

As I read it, it's open to anyone who meets the criteria - share enough links for content that is 2votes to the good, and have enough people click them at least once, and you qualify. Whether you get a sticker or a tshirt, I can;t say how they will dish them out. Suspect it depends how many take part

It really depends on having a lot of Twitter/Facebook/Etc friends who will look at links you share :)

4:36 PM
I hope it's worth a try.

@Gigili As a new user - feel free to post some of your answers (some - please not all and not all at once) here for feedback on whether it is useful and how to make it more likely to get votes.

@bmike Sure I will, but are you referring to my only answer? That was a bit embarrassing.

Try not to be too over the board with self promotion, but I think everyone will be willing to help out new users that want to learn what sort of question or answer is likely to get at least two votes. You will want to give back to the community by voting up (and down) answers you have found to be useful.
@Gigili Hey - I make mistakes all the time here - people comment and vote and point it out. I'm happy they make my answers better and more correct.

You don't have to share your own stuff, link to a question that has a great answer which you found useful. I linked to someone who asked a great question about iTunes, which I have wanted to ask , but never asked because I GET ANGRY WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT! ;)

@stuffe Oh? That would work? So I need to link to five questions? How many visitors should it get?

4:48 PM
It's not about promoting your own questions and answers, just the site in general to raise awareness of it. I don;t see that it matter whatsover what you share.
As for how many visitors, how long is a piece of string? I think you only need 1 person to click, purely to provide a single log entry that prove you shared it.

That was very informative, and helps me to not throw everything comes my mind out. Thank you.

@jaberg I use Audio Technicas. AT-M50s. I adore them. Though your "monitoring is not mastering" statement intrigues me. I assume it's something like Monitoring is listening for bleed and things you don't want to hear. Mastering is listening for the things that you do?

5:07 PM
@Daniel very nice - i like them - it's really nice when they link together in the related posts sidebar.
@JasonSalaz MOAR CAFFIENE - thanks so much for that ;-)

@JasonSalaz That's a pretty good summary, though my thoughts weren't quite so deep. Essentially to me monitoring, particularly of a field recording of my voice for a netcast type situation, is going to be less critical than my listening to a mix down. (Not that I do that, I'm a live sound guy, not a golden eared recording engineer)

There's a lot of good enough in the audio I do.

I'm really interested in audio work, though the most I've done was some stuff in school, and stuff for the podcast.
Kyle is consistently surprised at what I'm able to hear, FWIW.
I don't think that's golden-eared as much as it is heightened perception.
Though I've described audio "scenes" perfectly before.

5:09 PM
@jaberg The privilege of deep knowledge is the effortless ability to know when good enough is really good enough.

Don't get me wrong Jason, if I was taking a field recorder out, I'd pack the Ety's and the Sony monitors. But in a pinch, the Jlab J4M's will do.

The hardware doesn't make the man, but it certainly makes him better.

@bmike I really like that. Reminds me of a NASA story I once read on the net, about making a judgement call about a bent antenna.

Something I'm trying to beat into my friend's head regarding DJ equipment and software...

Mostly I was preaching a "don't get too wrapped up in the gear" philosophy.

5:11 PM
completely understood.

I have no doubt that a PR40 (or one of my 58's) through a good AD converter would be better, but I also feel that the Samson mic I bought just to check out back when they were first introduced is perfectly serviceable for podcast use, and is likely as good or better than the stuff coming from Blue.
I haven't done a side by side with the much praised Rode model, but again, save for not having the zero latency monitor (which hasn't been a problem in my experience), I suspect the sound quality of the two mics is comparable.
There may be differences in the sound coloration between the two. And one might prefer one over the other, but it
s hard for me to see the outright quality being significantly better.
Particularly when most of our studios aren't acoustic wonderlands.
Anyhow, audio geekery bores me. Let's do Nikon v. Canon instead.
(The answer, BTW, is Leica)

O_o
Never heard of Leica, until now.

Oh my.

Top tip guys: Know your audience. I'm listening to your podcasts in the car, on the tube, in a noisy office etc. I'm not relaxed in from of the fire in my slippers on the reclining chair with my best cans perfectly positioned on my head. Audio Podcasts only need to be good enough ;)

Could you imagine if someone had a patent on the typical body type of a DSLR?

5:20 PM
If it doesn't actively make me want to punch you in the face, it's OK.

@JasonSalaz That's going to become less of an issue moving forward because freed from the constraints of a film plane, pro cameras don't have to be SLRs.

@stuffe That's a diplomatic way of putting it :P. But I know the feeling, I've listened to many shows where one mic is buzzing, one guest is softer than the other, etc. Very obnoxious.
@jaberg All I mean is can you imagine how different the playing field would be if someone had ever patented that wide body type. It's not just DSLR, plenty of 35mm's used it too.
The nearly full screen on the back of the camera. The shutter button on the right on a hand-hold extension. The viewfinder angle, etc.

@stuffe I am however, frequently listening to podcasts through the bluetooth connection to a quality audio system in a german luxury car so bad audio is painful.

5:40 PM
I want that book.

You can't have my copy. I need it.
@Daniel Not exactly what you're looking for, but have you seen Marked and the Markdown Service Tools from Brett Terpstra?

Marked and/or Mou are WONDERFUL

I'm more likely to use Bywords built-in preview but, like ketchup in a french restaurant, I like that Marked is there just in case.

You and your colloquialisms.

Indeed.

So many of them I don't always get...

Ther's the quick cursor tool that can throw anything into byword for automatic preview, works on any selected text in a text box I should think

That one came to me via a friend a number of years back.

@jaberg I can probably get $5 together...

I'm using QuickCursor too
Thanks to a tip from @stuffe

I'm just wondering about how well that type of earbud stays in your ear...I've never used a pair like that.

5:52 PM
@daviesgeek That's 5 more dollars, but I think you'll be happy with the end result.

@jaberg You know what I mean...

My latest pair also came with a set of the flange-type earpieces, which I prefer (when I'm not using ear molds.) I'd put the Etymotic flanges on my J3Ms, so I don't have much to say about the earpieces in the photo.

I'm gonna throw a quick question out here. I've got a Magic Trackpad that's working fine with my iMac. But, when I try to pair it with my MacBook, the trackpad can't be found to pair with. Am I missing something obvious?

I've used them, but the flange type works better in my ears.

@jaberg I assume the flanges are the round rubber things?

5:55 PM
Is your mac in the room and paired to the trackpad?

@NathanGreenstein Turn your iMac bluetooth off?

iMac is completely turned off; MacBook still can't find the trackpad.

i.e, it can only pair to one at a time

@NathanGreenstein Obvious, I know, but did you check the batteries?

^ & hit the connect button

5:56 PM
@daviesgeek It still works with the iMac

@stuffe Same as the power button, right? I've been hitting that

Yup

@NathanGreenstein I know and that's kinda weird. When that type of stuff happens, I always check the batteries anyways.

Hmm. So, I think I'm doing everything right... The iMac is off, the trackpad is on, the MacBook is searching, I'm pressing the button...

5:57 PM
Unpair the trackpad from the Mac, then try again.

It's still weird...

@daviesgeek They're at 100%, but I tried taking them out and putting them back in.

Ok...

@jaberg Ah, good idea. I'll try that.

Check your macbook BT is fully on and available, recycle it if needs be in case it's only there for certain profiles

5:58 PM
Beyond that, I have a client with an iMac that flat-out refuses to pair with a BT keyboard or mouse. Been unable to solve and client forbade a nuke-n-pave. Client also didn't pay his bill so I'm just as glad.

Does it show up at all in the discoverable list?

Not at a Mac, but isn't there a preference for @lok for BT mouse.kb/trackpad@?

Yes, there is a Bluetooth preferences pane

@jaberg will those headphones w/ a mic work with a MBP?
(you can get a pair with a mic)

Awesome, unpaired with iMac and then it let me pair with MacBook.
Now I'm going to try re-pairing with the iMac...

6:03 PM
I don't think they work with my MBP (but I could check again) but I think the newer MBPs do support headsets. Anyone care to correct me?

I have a late 2011 MBP, so it's pretty much brand new.

All of my Jllabs earbuds have mics.
@daviesgeek Don't take my word for it.

Which I assume works with an iPhone

Yes, definitely works with iPhone.
That's why I have them.

;-)

6:06 PM
And if I wasn't clear, I preferred the J3M (which I gave to my B-i-L) to the J4M (purchased as a christmas lightening deal via Amazon) that I have now.

Ok. Thanks!

Q: Can I use iPhone earbuds as a microphone on my MacBook?

bpapaThe only microphone I have is the one built-in to my iPhone earbuds. I want to try some line-in stuff, so I plugged the headphones into the microphone port. I then went to System Preferences/Sound/Input and selected Line In. It doesn't appear that this is working as a microphone. Should it?

In fact, the next time I see him I'm going to ask him to trade. The 4's are just too big for convenient carry.

;-)

Look, there's even an official answer.
My macbook pro doesn't support external microphone, so no go for me.
Must go prepare lunch in preparation for Macbreak Weekly.

6:22 PM
@jaberg ...and mine does.
However, I don't know that I actually need the mic...I'll have to think about it.
Whoa! I've finally hit 4K!

7:09 PM
@daviesgeek It isn't nice to taunt. ;)
