Can anybody with access to the Snow Lion Preview please upload the new galaxy wallpaper?

Mountain Lion?

Oh, yeah.
....
I got it messed up :)

Ask nathan
I think he's a dev

Nathan doesn't have it yet

I hope this is ok with the developer terms.

8:06 PM
I just asked :)

Awww.

I'm looking for some screenshots too

I also noticed that you created the tag 'messages'! #pluralproblem
you = mods

did we? anyone can create a tag

Yeah, but messages was not possible because it's plural, right? I couldn't do it.
The problem has been there before with iPhone 4S, am I right?
@KyleCronin Is he still busy installing?

8:09 PM
looks like it was bmike that retagged it
@gentmatt no, he doesn't have access yet

yep.

he's not a dev, he's in an early release program

when you click on it....
Aaah! Here we go! Download the full res Mountain lion wallpaper here: 9to5mac.com/2012/02/16/mountain-lion-wall-papers-full-res

@KyleCronin Blog post done
lemme know what needs to be changed if anything

Q: Good automatic Time Tracking Tool for Mac OS X

the-kennyI'm searching for an automatic time tracking tool for Mac OS X. I regularly mess up manual time tracking with timers etc., so I want something more automatic: The application should run in background and track more or less everything I do - which applications are active, which sites I browse, ho...

Does it track time depending on whether the application is active or not?

8:19 PM
I don't know.
I've never used one.

With fullscreen mode, I have pretty much all applications open that I use.

Anyone know if the show package contents and burn the dmg trick works with ML?

@gentmatt Oh, yeah that's right, Lion has that.....

(lion autocorrected that to burn the dog)
3

@stuffe LOL

8:21 PM
I'm is using the new wallpaper now. THIS FEELS LIKE A WHOLE NEW MAC!

@gentmatt It's me. I merged messages.app and message questions on to the tag.

I'm about to ML my whole Air.
I ran Lion DP for 3 months no sweat, was so good I never even updated to the later betas.

Are you a dev?

121 messages hoooooooooolyc rap

but then my minimal use of plugins and extensions and etc etc makes that easier, less compatibility issues

8:25 PM
I edited the tag wikis for and to indicate that the former is for the APNS service and the latter is for the client software.

@JasonSalaz On your inbox?

@daviesgeek nah, but I tinker, and like to follow tutorials for hello worlds etc.

I'll watch them to see the old tags get deleted overnight (assuming no new questions use them) and also watch to see if there is confusion in using them in practice.
@gentmatt Are you previewing the new COUGAR look?
The cougar (Puma concolor), also known as puma, mountain lion, mountain cat, catamount or panther, depending on the region, is a mammal of the family Felidae, native to the Americas. This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any large wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, extending from Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in every major American habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the Western Hemisphere, after the jaguar. Although large, the cougar is most closely related to sma...

I'm just enjoying the new wallpaper ;)

I was so tempted to post the alternative Cougar wallpaper I just found.

8:34 PM
It's funny how mountain lion and puma are the same cat. First, I thought that these are two sub-species. But no: it's the same cat - only in a different geolocation.
6 hours ago, by Kyle Cronin
A mountain lion is the same animal as a puma. Does this mean Apple's re-releasing Mac OS X 10.1?
That makes so much more sense now :)

step one, restore InstallESD.dmg to USB HDD

What are you doin'?

Putting ML on my Air
wonder if I can do it in an hour
(download not included)

How did you get ML?
(torrent??)

Dev Program
all legit
I paid my dues...well, fees...

8:37 PM
Uh yeah. Installing from flash onto a SSD. It makes installing the OS more fun!

@stuffe Oh, I thought you said that you weren't a dev.

I'm not, I'm just in the program, I can't Xcode for toffee

Tempted to become a paid dev. (I say that every year at about this time.)

@stuffe I see.
I would love to develop Mac apps, if I had the time

Mine runs out in 9 days. Worth it to get Lion and ML DPs

8:39 PM
@stuffe Oh yeah!

coo, 3 mins to restore from download image.
onto HDD. Reboot next

8:51 PM
No ML for my MacBook, I guess :(

@NathanGreenstein That's much clearer than the article I found. So far so good, but I shouldn't have my hopes up for 10.9.

Hey @NathanGreenstein are you an admin on the AD blog?

OK, slight delay due to backups. Starting the timer at 20:55

@daviesgeek Yeah, I am.

@NathanGreenstein Can you proofread my post?

8:55 PM
Those will be the 32bit EFI macs. If you can go ML, I don't think any further restrictions will apply post that

@stuffe Seems there are also some GPU minimums

Oh, OK. My assumption
Booted into installer., partition erased.

I'm not complaining. Initially I thought my mid-2007 MBP had missed the ML cut. So far it looks like it makes it, but is on the low end of the scale. This is "year 5" so I'm due for a replacement but…

Install commences at 20:58

@jaberg How well does it run Lion?

8:58 PM
@daviesgeek As well as it needs to. I have no issues.

I see. And the multi-touch aspect?

I use a Magic Trackpad at the desk. I mostly use the iPad when I'm out, otherwise I get by.

I see.

Feaks me out to have the multi-touch on this air—I "zoom" a lot of windows while typing.

I have a macbook that is GMA850, won't take ML, but it's trackpad is awful anyway (compared to a modern one) so I am not sure I would want to. I love the trackpad. Ditched mice completely at home (also helps learn the reverse scroll)
I only put Lion on the other week

9:00 PM
@stuffe the only thing I liked better about those trackpads is the fact they have a physical button. still don't like the no-button trackpads

@stuffe No argument. I've become a convert. But I can survive without the multi-touch when I must. The whole it doesn't have to optimum thing again.

@daviesgeek The trial of Time Sink looks very promising. It even splits up the time for the websites you visit in Safari.

You don't mind just pressing the whole thing?

@gentmatt That is cool!
I may try it.

@gentmatt Now that's a feature I don't need—a report on the time I wasted looking for amusing cougar wall paper, and then decided discretion dictated I not post it.

9:02 PM
I had a real hard time with natural scrolling and a mouse. I found that ditching mice completely on Mac means that when I go to work and use a mouse, I am not fighting muscle memory
so windows-mouse, mac-trackpad, and I don;t even realise I am scrolling different on each

@jaberg I'm trying it for the lulz. I think my sister might be interested in this piece of software.

@stuffe My transition was brief. I think I got used to the new scrolling very quickly, and still adopt okay (granted using a mouse) when running SL on the iMac.

@jaberg Mine was a pain: stuffe.net/2011/04/muscle-memory
Or rather it wasn't until I had to switch back

@gentmatt I was typing out loud. Sounds like it has potential if you need to track the time. (I just don't want to be tracked quite that closely.)

@jaberg I'm still not converted a 100%. I really miss the old-style exposé. This was one major feature that converted me.

9:05 PM
@stuffe At least you took the steps to adapt instead of moaning far and wide about how impossible it was to do so.

@jaberg My sister depends on such tools @ the university. Her schedule is much tighter than mine.

@gentmatt There was a rather heated discussion along those lines on Ars this morning. My reaction (not posted) was that Mission Control breaks old workflows but enables new. It's not categorically worse (screwed up, useless and hopelessly broken) it's just different. I've adapted to it and now find it preferable.

@Jaberg - I thought it was a pretty clever way to switch without even realising. Any any hesitations about it soon fade the first time you "pull to refresh" in Twitter etc, so natural, hence the much disdained name

@stuffe I don't like how the windows are sorted in Mission Control. E.g Two applications. One on the top left, the other one at the bottom right? WTF?

I don't have any problem with individuals preferring one over the other, it's the notion that something not meeting a personal standard or breaking an individual workflow means that Apple has broken the OS which they are in the process of iOSofying.
I really liked Harry Mark's take on that last point.

9:10 PM
I see that, but if you have only 2 apps, why use MC, just cmd-tab
I like change.

"There will be those who scoff and say Apple is simplifying OS X even more and that power users won’t like it. Those people aren’t seeing the big picture. Power users are the ones who bounce from iPhone to iPad to Mac every day and want feature-cohesion among those devices. Mountain Lion is bringing that to them."

@jaberg Link?
@stuffe I like change, if it does not force me to buy a new computer ;)

Yeah, true!

When a New OS comes out, I never migrate, I fresh install, and I hit every sys pref pane there is to look for the changes. If you just migrate over, you miss all the cool new things.

9:14 PM
@stuffe If it looked like you tended to your blog I'd be tempted to add it to my RSS. ;) You've linked to two articles so far and I've found both of interest.

Yeah, it's a habit of mine to start new ones, then let them die in the shade

@stuffe Arguably better than my own practice of never quite getting around to starting.

I am trying to be better, but new job and baby has kinda stifled any 2 hours writing slots that I used to have.
and I like to hit them out in one piece.

@stuffe I want an Air so badly - this might be the cougar that breaks the camel's back.

Get an 11" one, then you can pre-order a special Ask Different recycled leather slip case ;)

9:15 PM
@bmike My mother can have this Air back when she pries it from my cold dead fingers.

(something else I am supposed to be doing, setting up a paypal storefront to sell said items)
@Jaberg that's the beauty of RSS, add it anyway, because it does;t exactly slow it down if I don't post for a while, but it does give you a pleasant surprise when I do

@stuffe No. It will sit there. Dead. Taunting me with unfulfilled promises.

I do this with a lot of software I use, subscribe to their rarely updated blogs, but usually when a new version or a sale comes up, they will post, and I get informed without having to go look

@stuffe I do the same. I will add you, but it won't stop me from trying to encourage you.

I have a monster brewing - I've asked Nathan about cross posting it on AD, so you may get it twice ;)
6 mins left

9:19 PM
@stuffe I support that notion.
Been thinking along those lines myself.

@stuffe The 11 model will be perfect for motorcycle journeys. Fits in the hard case so well. Just not sure I want to be with that smaller battery. Will have to look for DC charging options from my motorcycle outlets.
@stuffe What wares will you be selling?

Not an endorsement, just something that's been sitting in my link file,

install complete on 25 mins dead. first reboot

@jaberg Oh - that would work well with this... aerostich.com/navigate-communicate/more-electronics/…

@bmike I make 11" Air leather slip cases with personalised printed liners made from recycled leather (swatch books from sofa shops)

9:26 PM
"This is a logical progression based on user habits that have evolved over thirty years of experience with personal computers. This is what being post-PC is all about - getting the tech out of the way so you can get your work done." #ThoughtsOnLion

@stuffe Do email me or post a link pinging me when you get your site up.

Setup complete, logged in, asking for Apple ID, 29 minutes total

@gentmatt I was thinking of linking to that one myself
@bmike Unfortunately, there is no (readily available) online photo for the classic Land-Rover equivalent.

@bmike I'd show you a pic, there's one on my Instagram page, but you can't view them outside of the client?
iCloud setup done in a further minute.
< 30 minutes from running Lion to running ML

You can pull a link from your instagram @stuffe

9:30 PM
Ooh, hang on, if I do it on my phone, I can send myself a message to my ML system....good call.

This is ironic. The last line from the post that @gentmatt quoted: "Now if only I could get the hang of inverted scrolling…
"

Mind you, sending yourself snippets of text from iPhone to Mac via iMessage also rules :)
Even if it does duplicate the content as sender and recipient....
Is there an iCloud powered clipboard sync tool?

user30
hrm.

user30
9:42 PM
Will the later ML builds be updatable to the final release?

@stuffe DropBox. ;)

If Lion was anything to go by, the DP wasn't, subsequent builds were updateable
But not to vanilla final release
Dropbox is overkill for sending a URL from your iPhone to your Mac ;)

user30
Yeah, I got the 10.7.3 retail update though.

pastebot looks the works

@stuffe Not sure if ShoveBox works with photos in iOS. (Should test.) And unfortunately, requires local network, but I use it to send "snippets" and etickets all time.

9:47 PM
Yeah, Pastebot is local too, but that's OK, so long as it can queue them up and them zoom them over when you get to the local PC anyway
I really hate pastbot's heavy handed UI stylings tho :(

Disclaimer: I know the developer and I got a free copy of the Desktop app.

Looks great, but again overkill. I just want a quick copy/paste sync between mac and phone
local LAN sync fine, or iCloud better
Mus stop asking questions in Chat....

I understand what you want. This is what you can have.
;)

....ask on the site.....

1700 words and counting on my ML article
most of it not about ML directly :)

9:58 PM
First thoughts - Safari Tabs are utterly different
a 2 tab window will have 2 50% wide tabs

how so?
yikes

Notification windows slides the main screen to the left to show contents, main windows are not accessible, can't keep notification area open permanently
time to TRAWL prefs
(it's not been renamed "settings" yet)
I logged into the twitter webpage, it offered to set me up twitter OS wide. Genius

that's a bit scary

I logged into SE with my google account, it did the same
haha! Notification Center is hilarious
Put it this way, first time you open Mail, and it downloads your archive....yup, 1 notification per mail. I have 4000 to go...

@stuffe Hopefully, they sort that out.

10:13 PM
Notification Center menu bar icon has a blue dot when there is mail. Unusual to see colour in Apple provided entries?

But just in case, I'm going to do an Operation Inbox Zero if I decide to install.

I imagine there is a setting to only show notifications for VIP contacts, or only for unread etc, or that will get old fast.
VIPs is an option, not unread only yet tho. Just temp set it to VIP while it does it's initial thing

@stuffe That's the only way email notifications would be useful to me. I don't care about the single women in my area contacting me, just close friends, collaborators, and important clients.

Sure, just needs time to curate the list up
notes is fugly
and has NO preferences pane to change font?!

So long as the default isn't Comic Sans

10:18 PM
IMHO, marker felt is worse than Comic Sans
2

"noteworthy" - almost as bad
wonder if it's pickng that up from the iOS settings
Nope, iOS has choice of Noteworthy, Marker felt or Helvetica. Mac just used Noteworthy full stop
(well, as a default for synced notes, there is a format font menu item)

@stuffe Probably an early release thing.

sure
just first impressions

@stuffe isn't all this NDA'd?

Not if Macworld who get early access can write up what they have already.

10:25 PM
I don't think that makes it not NDA'd

Technically, you're not released from the NDA regarding a specific until they (or someone else) publishes it.
(At least last time I read it.)

Yeah, that's totally not true.
If everyone is free of the NDA as soon as some third party mentions it, NDAs would be worthless.

True, but we all know it's there as a legal last resort on the million to one shot that I manage to cause them some actual damage through talking about it. Or so they can be bitchy and can my ID if I criticise them in a way that goes viral

You're not free of the NDA until Apple says you are.

I don't. Apple gave me a system running ML and an embargo, which passed. RT @IAmReynolds Don't you have an NDA in place like developers?
journalists are the only ones exempt

10:26 PM
+1

and, of those, only the ones that got a special briefing from Apple

I would say "journalists on their list"

I'm for the evening guys. Catch you all soon.

Thing is, it's not a secret really is it? I mean it's not like the NDA is going to stop Microsoft from having people pawing all over this already.
laters

2274 words

10:30 PM
Who wanted the calendar list pop over banished? Well, I'm saying nuthin' but..... ;)
@KyleCronin - link?

sorry, I'm 2274 words into my ML opinion piece

Ah, thought it was the final count

nope, still going
though I could use some screenshots when I'm done, I'll ping you or Nathan

sure
Damn

I see what you mean about the tabs

10:34 PM
That is supposed to have an alert over it

did you command-shift-3 or command-shift-4-space-click?

Check the bottom right
enable desktop notification
I clicked it, it asked permission for the website to put alerts into notification center
can't quite recall.
anyway, it's enabled, nothing come through yet. Might work on login/out? Starred messages?

maybe the site doesn't support it?

Where does the link even come from though in the screenshot
must be a html5 thing

I must admit, I don't know what you've been talking about

10:38 PM
:)
The screenshot, there's a new piece of text under the starred messages

oh, that
I know Chrome supports that
apparently Safari on ML does too?

Click it, is asks permission via a drop down message area (osX style, not website CSS) to put things into notification center. I am guessing this is some extra html5 support in the browser that the site is picking up on, that an OS can interpret in whatever way it wants
What does Chrome do with them/it?

yeah, that would be my guess
Chrome has a growl-lookalike thing

Sounds exactly it then, it's intercepting them and using NC. What does it notify on tho?

lookalike
more like sucksalot
@stuffe:
7 mins ago, by Jason Salaz
did you command-shift-3 or command-shift-4-space-click?

10:42 PM
maybe it looks for @ mentions
try that again when the tab isn't highlighted

actually I know the answer

yeah, that's it - mentions

the dialog you're talking about is floating, so you can't selectively select the chrome window
you have to fullscreen screenshot

ahhh
well, I can;t get it to show up again now, as I gave permission once.

revoke!
chrome preferences somewhere

10:45 PM
It would be foolish to suggest that this is looking really stable and nice at this stage, but after an hour I am already impressed
There's a prompt for each website option, and a subsequent list of domains to revoke it through.

10:58 PM
prompt for each website?
oh, you're talking about the desktop notification permissions or whatever
@KyleCronin You're crazy.

I think Comic Sans gets an unfair bad rap
user image
2

I think you're freaking crazy.
2

I like that you said that in Comic Sans

App store downloads now download to Launchpad, not your dock, and the launchpad dock icon (if you haven;t already binned it) shows the progress via a meter

@stuffe it's like that in Lion too

11:08 PM
Really? Did they change it? Always came down to my dock previously

maybe it does if you've removed Launchpad from your dock?

(well, were always included in the dock, and i bin the launchpad icon as a rule)
oooh, intelligent single address/search box like chrome
lots of tiny changes

oh, @stuffe, what versions of Python and Ruby does ML ship with?

tell me what to type
Python 2.7.2

ruby --version

11:15 PM
ruby 1.8.7 (2011-12-28 patchlevel 357) [universal-darwin12.0]

hm, ok, thanks

np

no Python 3 or Ruby 1.9 yet I see

won't be up much longer, but hit me up via @ for screenshots tomorrow if you need them
(or for anything else)

I'm hoping to get the article up tomorrow, I'll pester nathan for them
thanks for all your help

11:17 PM
ok

11:44 PM
Universal applications will work on Lion right??

only the x86 x64, not ppc

Wow! I have Pages version 1.0.2 on this laptop! Crazy!
@stuffe I am looking in System Profiler.
I have apps that say "Universal"

Universal just means that they contain the binaries for both system architectures, ppc and intel

So they're fine right?

so, sorry, could have been clearer, a Universal should run anywhere

11:54 PM
Ok

but in reality it will be choosing the appropriate x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit) binary
and ignoring the PPC one. In fact I don;t think that the default universal binary build even includes it any more, so the universal thing is almost moot
