@daviesgeek Wrong chat room, DG? But in any event, I think I'll pass. A lot of what gets called "Christian music" doesn't seem particularly good to me as either being "Christian" or "music". Give me a cathedral evensong or a Bach cantata any day over country rock love songs about Jesus. Or better still, chanted compline.

Huh?
Whaddya mean wrong room? @daniel
And yes...I agree

@daviesgeek Didn't know if you wanted that in a Christianity.SE room.
Or if you intended it for AD

I did there too

Thanks @daniel probably a good idea

Nathan Greenstein on November 05, 2012

This is the twenty-eighth episode of the Ask Different Podcast. Your hosts this week are Kyle Cronin, Jason Salaz, Nathan Greenstein.

We’re back after a long summer! Today’s episode is all about games.

Kyle has recently been playing an iOS game called Super Hexagon by Terry Cavanaugh, a simple but deceptively-challenging game where one tries to maneuver a small hexagon through a never-ending obstacle course. Available for iPhone and iPad for $2.99 on the App Store.

Also by Terry Cavanaugh is VVVVVV, a challenging retro platformed where the action button reverses gravity instead of jumping. Available for Mac and PC on Steam for $4.99 and for the Nintendo 3DS for $7.99. …

A: Why won't my iPod Touch play in Bose SoundDock speakers anymore?

vclI had the same problem with my iPhone until I took of the protective case, then it seated in the dock just fine and I could play though the speakers.

Oh really?

@gentmatt WANT
@gentmatt You sleuth you.

@stuffe It's the ultimate eye-catcher and conservation starter. Probably also a turn on for desperate single women.

2:34 PM
@gentmatt That is exactly why I want it.
Java performance on Mac really sucks. My Win 8 Bootcamp installation running as a 2Gb virtual machine performs better than native for Minecraft.

@stuffe What do you mean by "running as a virtual machine"? Do you use Parallels to run the VM off the Bootcamp partition?

Yeah, exactly

Ok, I've also installed Win8 in a VM using Virtualbox. But I've experienced regular freezes. So it's basically unusable at the moment.

Hmm, maybe a virtual box fault. I'm working lovely, other than having tp phone MS up to get it activated on the virtual hardware

2:53 PM
@gentmatt What are you doing when you're getting those freezes?

I can't really relate it to anything special. But two times it happened directly after opening Chrome's Metro app.

I use the consumer preview in combination with a VM and it really works like a charm
this might be the first OS of Windows I really like ;-)

In Win7, i've also experienced freezes when installing the 3D drivers from the guest additions. In Win8, there's not really an option to avoid that - I think (but I'm not sure).
@Michiel WTF :D

@gentmatt at work, I HAVE to work on a Windows
and believe me, I've had Windows Vista, 7 and now 8
8 is the one I like the most :-)
hence the "like", don't take it personal, I still LOVE my Mac at home :-)

As a person that only occasionally uses Windows, I could say that Win8 is also my favorite Win OS. But if it were my workstation, I'd probably say something difffernt.

2:59 PM
Luckily, I only need 1 program more or less, so there is not much to complain about :)
for other tasks, I use my 7 and if I can my Mac
image my desk...
imagine*
and to think of a single iMac could replace all that mess...

Hey @jrg, is Chris Giffard (Twitter @cgiffard) related to you by chance?
ah, whoops. Gifford vs. Giffard. Unilkely then in that case.

jrg
3:35 PM
@JasonSalaz nope.

You don't say

jrg
as far as I know, the only giffords i'm related to that are on twitter are Mom, Dad, and the placeholder accounts for my 3 siblings.
although this guy is rather funny when i see his stuff pop up in my google alert. :P - twitter.com/jamesgif
and then Mr. Mead is a pretty decent photographer. twitter.com/JGIFFORDMEAD
i want him to do my wedding. ;)
there is some other funny Mr. Gifford out there...
oh yes, the one-handed blue guitarist. and there are a few criminals by the name of James Gifford too. Amazing what you learn by just googling yourself and reading one short email every day. :P

RIP
@gentmatt I actually (shock, horror) quite like it

jrg
@stuffe @gentmatt i am ok with metro and windows 8. except I can't run the unix tools i love on it, so i stay away.

Yeah, right... you guys... Stockholm syndrome... cough

@jrg Have so many other options for if I need a good command line, that I would never even look in Windows any more.

jrg
@stuffe i'm sorry, i haven't been able to replicate the rvm/rbenv toolset in such a way that I could run Windows.
Besides, i touch so many potentially networks that I'd never risk a bare-metal windows install. Sorry.
little do you all know, but I run BeOS with VirtualBox running Ubuntu. INFECT THAT!

I couldn't use it as my main OS, but for what little I need a windows license for, it's better than XP, and looks less like Windows than 7 did. I have never used Vista personally other than a few troubleshooting efforts on other peoples computers, it's why/when I switched.
I don't doubt that within a year I will never have to leave Metro for anything, and that could work out to be quite a nice thing

@jrg Woah - is BeOS the host OS for VirtualBox or the client?

Running WIN8 virtual in a window in Metro is so much neater than having proper windows in a window, or having to switch desktops or use window coherency modes. It looks like a stylised local app.

jrg
@bmike host OS.

3:53 PM
Awesome. I've never had the time/need to use BeOS - but it sure seems like a cool tool.

jrg
and i'm joking. i have no intentions of running BeOS. something like that (maybe a BSD and then VMs?) would be my dream setup.

Dooh!

jrg
turn my laptop into a glorified hypervisor. shrug

I have a bunch of laptops that I want to boot direct into a ML compatible VNC terminal
maybe even pixie boot into a slim linux with VNC direct from my iMac.
Now there's a question that would be hard to choose the best SE site for...

jrg
serverfault.

jrg
@gentmatt does it work well?

6:05 PM
@gentmatt nice!

6:40 PM
@bmike thanks, also testing a theory that Attention to KEXTs is too Dalek-like :-)

7:09 PM
@jrg No idea. This is not my setup. I just found this picture and thought it was cool, so I shared it here. However, paper-like material is not rarely used in audio systems. It's a light and flexible membrane. So I guess that this DIY solution will do just fine.

jrg
@gentmatt Now I really want to go do that.
lemme find two cups and a toilet paper roll.
and if i make another one with a paper towel tube, i can use it for $tablet-device.

I also thought of doing something similar for a netbook. They have horrible speakers!

jrg
true
