Q: Why is this the answer?

ClickRickSeen in a cryptic crossword (Metro, 9th May): Continental stagecoach industry [9] The answer is but why?

I feel like this didn't really get answered. The definition part, sure, but not the other part.

1 hour later…
12:10 PM
@q_a: it's a double definition
continental stagecoach is a diligence
industry is a synonym for diligence
@question_asker

hm
I guess the clue is just kinda crappy, then

eh, I think it works apart from one of the defs being really obscure
double definitions are a perfectly fine type of cryptic clue

I'm not taking issue with the type of clue it is, mostly just that one of the definitions only comes from one arbitrary word of the clue. It's... unsatisfying, to say the least.

arbitrary? what do you mean?
continental stagecoach: diligence
industry: diligence

arbitrary in the sense that ... why would you think "oh, the second clue here must be this one specific word, for no particular reason"

12:16 PM
because that's how cryptic clues work? each clue is divided into two parts: if continental stagecoach is one part, then industry must be the other

like. "Found in the paper (7)" answer being "article" justified by a) an article is found in the paper and b) the word "the" is in the clue
like, maybe that's normal for cryptic clues, but... it's fuckin stupid

no, it's not
cryptic clues are always divided into two parts: a definition part and a wordplay part (which can optionally be another definition)
the challenge comes from figuring out where the "divider" is, then finding the word that both sections lead to independently

Hello, community. I'm new here.

@Deusovi Ah, see, I didn't read it as having a divider - the whole clue works for the definition part. Picking out one word seems goofy as hell.
it's its own type of "guess what I'm thinking"

I'm quite happy that my first contribution was well received, however I don't know if the riddle in question is at a satisfying level for the commu.

12:20 PM
sorry, hello @Anton

Hi Anton!

didn't mean to ignore you just then

satisfying level of cryptic, or something like that.*
no problem.

@q_a: yeah, "continental stagecoach" is a clue on its own - "diligence" is a specific type of stagecoach, not an entire industry
"industry" is its own separate clue for diligence (as in personal productivity)

@Anton I liked your puzzle, but I don't know the answer yet. It seems like it's narrow enough (especially with the circle/square thing)
@Deusovi Like I say, I get what the answers refer to

12:23 PM
Cool :)
I have some hints ready if necessary.

@Anton That never hurts, but it's fine to give it a while. Some puzzles/riddles don't get solved for a long time here.

yeah, don't be too generous with the hints!

Just now realizing how silly it is that voting to get something moved to another site is a close reason. I don't want it closed; I want it moved. ><

I think it's strange that we only have the option to move stuff to meta

Yes, that was supposed to be the BIGGEST change from being out of beta. It annoys me.

12:24 PM
agreed
we need to be able to move things to math at the least

But I guess that sort of makes sense in that people don't want like, the Outdoors people deciding that a post belongs in Physics.
(that's potentially a loaded example, but put any other two SE sites there)

Perhaps, but as an almost non-repped user in SO, I can vote to move things to like 6 different sites.

ah
I didn't know it was a per-site thing

Yeah, seems to be

oh no, there's somebody in the main puzzling chat upset about deletion/suspension

12:28 PM
ooh lemme see

Yeah, the name is familiar
May have been one of the ones who had a puzzle closed for plagiarism.
Though with how rarely that's happening, must have been a strong case.

That's what I thought, but it doesn't seem like it?

Only once I've seen it happen to, so far, is one that Will noticed, the other day, where the guy claimed to, specifically, have created them and had clearly copied every one from the same one site.
which is to say - no one would have had a problem, had he not made that claim
However, being unable to see deleted posts, anymore, I can't attempt to find that other person's post.

hey, my picture updated

Yeah =D - Sometime yesterday

I can't see what's happening without struggling #thanks mobile chat

OK nm, Emrakul gave the answer (yes, questions were literally plagiarized)
but originally he was making it out as if the issue was that other people had math problems on the site and his had been deleted. (I VTCed the one he linked)

yeah, those cryptics were blatant plagiarism
oh the math ones

KoA
the other chat seems so serious
and placid
this one is dank memes

Oh right! I remember, now!
That was the user who had like 15 puzzles closed for plagiarism - it was the time when Emrakul made that comment about them, in the first place.
They were all closed, in series

12:47 PM
Will be another 7k before I can see that info again - heh.

yeah I'm not looking forward to trying to more than triple my current rep to get back to where I was.

Yeah it's a bit...
..hmm...
...discouraging.

I liked that meta question, btw, about 10 points for upvotes on questions

I've been trying to figure out why it wasn't that way, to begin with, since I joined this site.

I think that's appropriate for puzzling (and PPCG, or any site where a question is effectively a challenge)

12:49 PM
I've wondered why I get punished for asking questions.

it used to be

I had no idea it used to be

and then SE was like "answers are better than questions, so questions are only worth +5 now"

Ask a question, get 10 upvotes - 50 pts. Someone answers - gets 20 upvotes (because no one upvotes questions) and they get 200

KoA
I find myself upvoting really good questions, and then the "okay" ones if they invite really good answers

12:50 PM
but... if your site is based around challenges, rather than "how do I run a webserver on a different port" or whatever... they should be worth more

Yeah, I highly approve of that meta post, imo
Yeah, everything stated in that post makes perfect sense, due to our differences.
I find myself forgetting to upvote questions, KoA, because it can be hard to tell if some of them are good until they get answers - at which point you're focused on the answers.

yeah, we need question votes to be worth more

I favorite any question I can't tell the quality of but want to know the answer to, then if the answer is good I upvote both question and answer

Yeah, the "favorite" system on this site is flawed.
I used it as a "bookmark" system until I realized that no one else did.

I sorta use it that way

12:53 PM
True, but if you don't ever remove bookmarks (like I used to), then the bookmarks aren't useful.

though we get so few questions (relatively speaking) that 99% of the time, anything I have an interest in is either bountied or on the front page

Rather like looking through shoestrings to find the one string you need.
Yeah
Though puzzles definitely get forgotten, even if people favorite them.

which reminds me, there are a few I want to check up on

No one has looked at my recent one for several days, since it dropped from active.

I use it as a following feature. When an answer gets accepted, I check it out, cast my votes, then unfavorite

12:54 PM
And I've been too busy to deal with it.

one nice thing about favoriting is that you can return to questions that have been closed if you have them favorited

That's what I did, too, Gordon - but there's badges, etc, for the number of people favoriting your post, so it hurts people to remove your favorite.

KoA
I only use favourites when I'm on my phone and don't have time to read a question but read enough of it to know I'm interested in the rest + answers

That's actually exactly how I was using it, previously.

I'll never get those badges, since I don't post questions

12:55 PM
lol
Perhaps, but I know a lot of people enjoy earning the badges

I do! but I'll just have to earn badges some other way haha

Well I use the feature stack exchange gives me the way I find it useful, if I never favorited it in the first place it wouldn't make a difference

Yeah - I still favorite them, I just tend to not unfavorite anymore.
=D

oh my god, that graph puzzle is at +14/-12 right now

yeah

12:57 PM
I'm about to close one of my puzzles just so I can stop seeing people randomly go search for it just to downvote it. LoL

which, now that I think about it, is appropriate. It doesn't deserve to be negative, but it doesn't deserve to be, say, +26 either
looks like that sculpture park question is going to die a silent death

Nice puzzle, @Anton

Thanks.

Maybe so - the Newspaper one wasn't solved until it had hidden for a month =D

which one is that?

12:59 PM
Alconja's dream newspaper
Snickers - My website Launched joke is still over there. -->

kk, which one are you gonna close?

That one that humn adores

Q: Rebuses are so cliché

Khale_KithaHere's a good puzzle to end the day with. See if you can figure out what the image sequence is telling you. Hints: 1 2

I want to see the accepted answer for this question puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/29888/… :/

Agreed, Gordon
Conor's been here, recently, but he ignores it
I find Conor's numbers hilarious.
17 questions
17 answers
17k people reached.
That's just...awesome.

I like how my simplest puzzle has the most upvotes even though it has the least effort put into it >.>

1:04 PM
Yeah, that seems to happen - and with answers, often, too, Gordon
It's because it's the one that people could decide was a good puzzle when they first saw it.
The others, people forget to vote on, because they don't focus until it has answers.
In my experience..

The secret to rep here is to draw cool pictures in your question

Besides MS Paint, what can you use to make beautiful images ?

What else do you need?

KoA
Photoshop elements if you're bothered

Photoshop if you have it, Gimp or (if you must) Paint.Net, if not.
MS Paint works fine for some things, though :)
Heck....

Q: The First Lady's Dominos

Khale_KithaI went to visit a friend the other day, and was invited inside. When I entered, I spied an arrangement of various dominos, upon the table. They were not arranged, standing up, as if she had been meaning to do anything spectacular with them, but the arrangement did seem to be important to her. ...

That was done in MS Paint :)

1:07 PM
I hear the Mona Lisa was originally done in MS Paint with a trackpad

haha
Don't be ridiculous
Clearly, it was an Etch-A-Sketch.

I want to draw a nice graph with arcs and outlined dots
And doing that with Paint is a chore

I wish I could find my copy of Maya to do this one puzzle I have in mind, lol.
Excel can feature that, for you, (if I'm understanding it) if you have it.
Step 1. Find copy of Maya.
Step 2. Try again to figure out how it works.
Step 3. Make puzzle
Step 4. ???

try blender?

Actually I might - it's just that when I installed it, the other day..
It wouldn't launch
(Though now my machine has forced itself to Windows 10, so I should try again)
I need that running, at some point, anyways, though, for my Unity class.

1:10 PM
I tried blender, but I am not artistically inclined so I got nowhere

Yeah, damn
Just loads a Cmd window for 0.5s with an Exception
then closes
I'm not either, Gordon. My endeavours are pure willpower more than skill. Hoping it can push me through.

I bought myself a graphics tablet thing a while back, when I was heaps into art and stuff
definitely recommend getting one if you want to get into digital drawing

I'd love to have one of those, tbh
I just don't want one of the tiny ones, and they're 'spensive.
It's one of those - too expensive to buy two, so I want to do it right the first time - things.

KoA
Mine's a Wacom Bamboo something something and it's definitely great

Yeah, everyone that I knew in game art that had one used a Wacom
A few of the guys I worked with used it, exclusively, for their PC control
Didn't even have a mouse hooked up

1:15 PM
That's what I did back when I used it heaps
it's got buttons on it for a quick shortcut menu thing
and you can handwrite instead of type when you're using it

yeah

hmm much puzzle discussion

Q: Ghotiy spelling

DevsmanAs some of you likely know, ghoti is an interesting spelling of the word Using: This is a rather ghotiy way to spell the word. But in the same spirit, what common phrase is spelled below? ugh theighmolo Please mention each sound and what word it is taken from (there may be more than one ...

@question_asker In case you didn't see f"'s answer, last night. The perfect response.

Yeah, I loved that
I'm also mystified that it isn't the "correct" answer

1:25 PM
Silence is the common phrase of the introvert

Sigh - The blender issue is resolved by installing Visual Studio 2013 C++ redist --- which Windows 10 won't allow to run.

1) noooo don't close the cliche one
2) YES PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE CONOR POST THE ANSWER TO THAT REBUS

Why? It's just a negative rep generator, lol
lol

oh jeez, I didn't realize that
fair enough

It has positive overall score though

1:30 PM
Yeah, that's why I've left it - just gradually getting downvotes (Never got any when it was active - people have just decided, months later, that it's inappropriate for some reason)

I mean, I never would have gotten the answer in a million years, but that doesn't make it a bad puzzle

I admit that it was too vague, though
Was one of my first ones

My worst puzzle is probably my music one, I picked some pretty obscure songs

it can be really tough to come up with Knowledge puzzles that aren't tough
(Now that I'm able to talk the MS site into downloading the x64 version of this redist instead of the ARM version, that it wants to)

KoA
The puzzle I'm working on right now will definitely require knowledge (or research if you're bothered)

1:34 PM
I want to either get an answer to my comment from the OP, or know what the answer to the question is, so I can remove the 'lateral thinking' tag: puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/32274/…
I like the knowledge/"trivia" type puzzles

I suppose it could be - but it seems like it probably isn't.
Will have to see, I guess.
It also seems like it could be a play on the word lateral - which wouldn't be a lateral thinking puzzle, either =D

right
that is my line of thinking on that

KoA
(clue #4 of what I'm working on involves a picture of a goat, so I'm feeling pretty accomplished)

I should make a Ladderal thinking puzzle - just like my other puzzle called.....

KoA
Omg gotta get a plastic bag reference in there somewhere

1:37 PM
Litorally speaking

"lateral thinking" is pretty well understood to mean "this puzzle seems like it should be solved [way], when it should actually be solved [other way], providing a much more elegant answer"

Solid progress is being made on my puzzling friend puzzle so that's nice. I have a part 2 planned and ideas for part 3 and 4 in the works

Nice

there was one that was tagged "lateral thinking" and so I solved it with lateral thinking, but it was just a play on the word lateral, and that pissed me off.

Yeah, see - that's just not lateral thinking - that's wordplay

1:38 PM
the solution ended up being a super obvious interpretation of the (visual) clues

"Lateral Thinking - A puzzle about Football"

I remember at one point, somebody even asked a meta question about that kind of thing, about making the tags part of the puzzle, so to speak, and it was (rightly) rejected. Don't send people down the wrong path. It's obnoxious and it doesn't make the answer any more satisfying.

Yeah, see - this just isn't useful...
/rant

1:41 PM
OK, lemme amend that - don't do something that is very likely to send people down the wrong path, on a structural level

The fact that it's a common error is not an excuse. Fix your friggen C++ code :P

haha yeah, that sucks, sorry

But yeah - agreed
That's actually mentioned in our meta post about what not to do.

KoA
100% in agreement, q_a

Which is why I'm careful about red herrings, in general.
Or I try to be, at least.
Most of my fish sneak in, uninvited.

1:42 PM
@KoA I've been working on a pretty big multipart puzzle, got a plastic bag into it already

That may push off my Launch joke..
Hah, nice f"

KoA
we should all time it so we all post a plastic bag puzzle at the same time

yeah. red herrings are a) generally fine, assuming they're managed well, and b) ultimately unavoidable - you can't control how people are going to interpret your puzzle. but they're something you should avoid when you have control over them

Yeah - though honestly that second picture in Karen's puzzle..
Was not intended to be a red herring. I was just unfamiliar enough with the encoding process that I wasn't sure if it would be helpful to anyone, despite it being solvable without it.
At a certain point, I realized it wasn't helping, though.

yeah. like I say, you can't always avoid them

KoA
1:44 PM
Generally, if you see that everyone is focusing on something that isn't part of the solution, it's a good idea to drop a hint to set everyone back on the right path

I mean. You could "test" your puzzles with a group or something, but at that point... what are you doing submitting puzzles to a website for free?

Oh trust me, I did, lol. I think I dropped --- what --- 7 hints about it, q_a?
Everyone was focused on it with a razor, despite anything I told them.

Like, I'm all for giving away anything and everything for free, but we do live in a world where people's labor and time is valuable. At some point it's just not reasonable to expect free puzzles on a free website to be flawless.

f''
@KoA still got six parts to write, so it'll be a while

@f'' literally same, onto clue #6 right now

Also wow, didn't expect my joke answer to become my highest scoring one

haha
It was a brilliant joke answer.

KoA
Totally random question but is anyone planning on doing the SUMS puzzle hunt this year?

@f'' I honestly thought it was the correct answer
sorry, "intended"

what is that?

KoA
It's a puzzle competition/hunt thing ran by the University of Sydney each year, but is open to international entry
it's all done online

1:49 PM
it's so wild to me, the way we solve these puzzles.

I'll do some more reading on it - sounds like fun

I just think about growing up reading martin gardner and raymond smullyan books and shit like that and like. If I couldn't figure out the answer, and the answers weren't like, printed in the book somewhere, I was just SOL
the way we get impatient if a puzzle hasn't been solved in a couple of days, or even a month or something, that's an expectation that was completely unheard-of within my lifetime.
(I'm not criticizing impatience or anything, I'm impatient as hell)
well I shut everybody in here up with my introspection

I'm still trying to get Blender to run, but it's being worthless.
This issue appears to come up all the time, for them, and they do various things to bandaid it, but have never fixed it, because they can't figure out the cause.
...and we have a Blender SE - well I'll look into that, if this ever runs

KoA
I'm trying to draw grass in MS paint rn because ceebs actually drawing properly
