4:13 PM
@amWhy: I thought the discussion about my comments was getting a bit 'chatty', so I came in here to see if you were here.

user19161
@TaraB Which question?

@Jasper: It's not a mathematical issue, and doesn't really concern anyone else here. I suppose a public chatroom isn't quite the right place, but I have no idea how to start a private chat (or if it's even possible).

user19161
@TaraB There is no private chat here.

Well, there is semi-private chat if you continue a discussion in the comments long enough to get to the 'continue this discussion in chat' message.
But I no of know other way to get to that other than by keeping going long enough for the message to come up.

user19161
Haha, yeah, you can start a new room with someone, though everyone can still read.

4:24 PM
So how do you do that?
Yeah, I didn't mean private in the sense of nobody else being able to read it, just private in the sense that there wouldn't already be a bunch of other people in the 'room'.

user19161
@TaraB Well, even if you do it, the other person might not notice.

user19161
So I usually just say everything here, nothing to hide.

Right.

user19161
I see what you are talking about. I am reading the comment thread now...

user19161
@TaraB Hey, don't worry about what you said. I think it is alright. Just a misunderstanding perhaps, no sweat.

user19161
4:30 PM
Also, don't worry too much about hurting other people's feelings. I say so because I think you worry too much @tara.

No, I don't think I worry too much.
And I'm quite glad amWhy said something, since otherwise I would never have known that I made someone nearly want to quit this site.
I'm trying to learn to be more aware of how I make people feel by the way I talk.

user19161
Oh well, there are many reasons why some people feel some way about some things...

Because in my teaching evaluations, someone commented that I can be quite dismissive when someone is taking a while to understand something.
And that really hurt a lot, because I had no idea I could come across like that. I think of myself as very patient.

user19161
I wanna add why I am saying this myself.

user19161
Because too often in my life, people have done things to hurt me, and then they act as if I have hurt them.

user19161
4:33 PM
As long as you know what you are doing, and then try to clarify matters later, it is alright.

Ah, see, I know that this is a thing that happens to people (a friend was telling me just last night that this happens to her a lot). But it is not a common experience for me.

user19161
So maybe you did something harmless that caused someone to be upset. Just clarify and then move on.

Yep, have done.
But I think it was very useful for me to know that the person was upset.

user19161
On the other hand, there are people who do things that are really not harmless, and then they act as if they did nothing.

user19161
In other words, in a situation of conflict, there usually is someone who is neurotic, and another with a character disorder.

user19161
4:36 PM
Not saying this is the case here, just general comments.

user19161
OMG @arkamis I saw how you proved the trig identity...

@JasperLoy :)
Not that it was the best way, but I wanted to add some flavor to the many answers already there.

user19161
@Arkamis Yes, well done!

user19161
@Arkamis Do you like mine? =)))

Love it -- it's actually basically the same argument!

user19161
4:47 PM
lol

One of the things I hated when I was younger was how trig identities seemed to come from nowhere. Using exponentials gives some mechanical understanding to it, even if it is tedious to do all the algebra.
Once I learned that, I forgot all the trig identities I ever learned.

user19161
Actually Dominic sort of added mine in a different form while I took a really long time to think.

5:00 PM
@TaraB Maybe being "dismissive" is not such a bad thing.

Well, it's not how I want my students to perceive me.

True, depending on the grade level.
But you do have a schedule to keep up with, no?

I was mainly teaching tutorials. So the main point was to really help the students to understand. I don't see any point in hurrying on with a schedule if lots of people are getting left behind.

In university they will definitely encounter a lot of dismissiveness, so this may indirectly help them to learn to deal with it.
IMO
:-)

I'd way rather help them understand maths than indirectly help them to learn to deal with dismissiveness!
(I am teaching at university, not school, by the way.)

5:11 PM
Oh, I thought it was school.

user19161
Sometimes, it is not even dismissiveness.

Hmm

sometimes even praise is harmful you know.....

Praise is always helpful in learning.

@jasper Hello, Jaspy

user19161
5:18 PM
@Charlie Good Friday!

@JayeshBadwaik they call it positive re-enforcement...

@JasperLoy thanks, Jasper, you too!

@kranioperip (can't type greek, sorry): Why did you think that?
@Jayesh: There's a huge distance between dismissiveness and praise. All I was aiming at was patience.

@TaraB Sorry, I just jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Yeah, I was just wondering what on earth you had to base that conclusion on?
Especially as I mentioned tutorials, which I don't believe are common in school.

5:27 PM
@TaraB what do you mean by tutorials btw?

user19161
@TobiasKildetoft They are also called recitations or sections.

@JasperLoy hmm, still doesn't look familiar

They're classes where you have a smaller group of students than in lectures, and you spend the time going over some questions. (There are different styles of tutorial, sometimes the students spend the time working on questions together, and sometimes the teacher and/or some students answer the questions on the board.)

user19161
@TobiasKildetoft Basically, you go through exercise problems.

Excercise classes? In Germany this similar things is an Uebungsgruppe.

5:30 PM
ahh

user19161
lol

user19161
I like the term "ansatz"!

this similar things?? I meant to write 'the similar thing'
@Tobias: Are you German?

no, danish

yeah, i didn't think your surname looked german.
but i figured you were probably from a near enough country that the german might still help.

5:31 PM
nicely spotted

user19161
He is not German; he is Tobias, lol.

user19161
At first, I thought he was the author of lshort, lol.

At first, I thought you were a nut, but now I know you are just a banana ;)

user19161
@κρανίοπεριπολία Actually, I am a banana nut crunch, an ice cream flavour, lol.

Mmm...
Sometimes, we all just run out of patience... @TobiasKildetoft

5:41 PM
@skull It is impossible not to whistle along with the intro to that song.

@Arkamis fortunately, I don't know it, or I might have been annoying my office mate now

I had to not watch the video, for fear that I would do the same.

@MichaelGreinecker I like taking risks.
Haha said the clown.

user19161
5:58 PM
@JonasTeuwen Are you going to change your photo soon?

user19161
@κρανίοπεριπολία lol

user19161
J.M. doesn't come to chat these days.

6:13 PM
@JasperLoy I have no newer one.
Our secretary took this one.
I am sick of it too, yes.

You could use one of your old ones.

That is indeed a fact.

guys, does anyone here know about graph theory?

7:27 PM
No.

7:41 PM
When we transform an augmented matrix ( originated form a system Ax=b ) into reduced row echelon form like in this example postimage.org/image/qo5z1ins1/f1e627cb why we need to solve for x1 and x3 ? what so special aobut this variables ? Why cant we solve for x2 and x3 for example ? or for x2 and x4 ?

7:55 PM
@nerdy you could
The only reason you solve for x1 and x3 is because they have 1 as their coefficient
So it's more "direct" -- you don't get some fraction floating around
Ostensibly, it's because those are the variables that became the "pivot" variables, but I find that to be a rather worthless inclusion of additional terminology.

8:14 PM
I have found that "ostensible" is a rather worthless attempted inclusion into my vocabulary :D
but it does sound nice.

Your vociferous protestations go unheeded, sir.

@TaraB, if you email me, I can forward your message to amWhy, with or without your email address, as you prefer.
apparently a long comment string at math.stackexchange.com/questions/344464/…

Thank you for not paying heed to my obstreperous vociferous protestations, sir.
@WillJagy Why don't they just get rid of the comment section all together and just leave the various answers to the question?

8:34 PM
@TaraB, meanwhile, i see no email address (or method for finding one other than friending on Facebook) for Babak, but he seems in an excellent mood regardless.

My bloody spine. My bloody bloody. Holy cow.

Go for the operation if the pain is getting worse, pal.

@κρανίοπεριπολία, that is a possibility.I'm not a moderator. I am one of the very few who replies to email. I also think that anything remotely personal gets distorted beyond reason on a website, precisely because anything person A says to person B may be interpreted as bad by person C. It was like that playing soccer with guys of many nations. Anyway, standard offer, for people who have some reason to email (i.e. take it private!) I provide forwarding. Done that for amWhy before.
@JonasTeuwen, I mentioned to John that, even should you get a full OK for the surgery, it is unlikely to be scheduled before June, as these guys are busy busy busy. So, you could schedule Madrid, do various necessary tests in April and early May, go to Madrid, come back and have whatever procedure(s) is indicated. Maybe don't indicate a talk for Madrid, that is extra pressure that you probably could do without. Talk to people there one to one.

9:16 PM
@TaraB Hi! I didn't catch your message earlier, I'm sorry. I'm here!

Does anyone know the identity of 5pm / PavelM who was a recent contributor to math.SE ?

@amWhy: Hi.
Actually I hadn't gotten a proper reply from Babak yet at the point I first came into the chat room.
I feel like it's pretty much all sorted out now.

@TaraB Yes, indeed. I think all is good.

I didn't understand you talking about sarcasm and 'shaming' in connection with my comments, though.
Sarcasm especially.

@TaraB I just felt badly because Babak was really hurt, and feeling ashamed.
Sarcasm was not, nor should I have implied, a factor here. It was part of a more general statement that I should have refrained from at that time and place, about what I see in response to OP's, often.

9:24 PM
Yeah, I feel bad about that too. But I felt you were making out what I had said to be much worse than it was, and much more meanly motivated.

@TaraB, repeat, if you two see reason to email, I can facilitate that. I always feel stupid bringing it up, but sometimes it is the bestr approach

But I'm still glad you said something, because I wouldn't have even realised there was something to apologise for otherwise.
@Will: I think my apology in the comments probably suffices?

@TaraB Yes, but I should delete the comments, as all is resolved!

The problem is, having been around the block long enough, we forget that many users do not have awareness of how lighthearted we feel we're being when we joke around, in which case our motivations or lack thereof are approximately moot. (Have I guessed what we're talking about correctly?)

I actually think Babak went on an 'upvoting spree' for me earlier today. I don't know that for sure though.

9:28 PM
@TaraB, I have no idea. If you both are satisfied then perhaps this is enough. But I feel an interpersonal connection is worth something in its own right.

@anon: I wasn't actually joking around. I was quite serious, but probably I should have kept my mouth shut.

Ethan's not here bro.

:-)
@Karl'sstudents Hi honey. How are you?

@Will Thank you. You are free to give my email to those seeking it from you! I can vouch for Will: trustworthy mediator, and simply, a good way to connect with other users without posting one's email address over the WWW!

9:29 PM
@amWhy: I guess so, but I would like to leave my apology, and then it becomes a little bit difficult to know what exactly should be deleted. Although I suppose you would favour me deleting the original comment?

Hey guys, I hate to intrude, but would it be ok for me to ask for some quick help? I'm not sure my question is worthy of a post on math.SE.

sure

Thanks, let's give it a spin then: I'm looking for a logarithmic-ish function that would return numbers in a specific range.

@TaraB I don't think it really matters right now. I think all is good... And I apologize for singling you out.

Don't know if that even makes sense though.

9:32 PM
@amWhy: Don't worry about it. It's good to have cleared up that you didn't actually find anything sarcastic in my comment, though.

@Pioul gonna have to be much more specific

@Tara No, I didn't. I should have addressed sarcasm (found frequently elsewhere - but not at all applicable in the case at hand) on meta, (again)! ;-)

Please punctuate all sarcasm with (!)

Well, I do understand how it is when something bugs you, and then you end up complaining more about a specific case because of a multitude of cases.

hhh
I need to find whether a multilinear function has a constant. I have this novel idea: calculate modulo with respect to all symvars. If gcd(mlf,symvars)=1, then if modulo(mlf, symvars)=mlf, we have a constant.

Does this make sense?

9:37 PM
What do you think this is a math room(!)

hhh
Suppose $\text{mlf}=1+a+b+a^2+b^2$. Now $\mod(mlf,a)=1+b+b*b:=A$. Now $\mod(A,b)=1:=B$. Since $B\in \mathbb R$, we have a constant. There may be better way to check whether a mlf has a constant term, not verified this method...

@κρανίοπεριπολία Hahahahahahahahaha!

@JonasTeuwen Jonas bro, we need more swearing, I just noticed that some asshole opened a meta post about "urine soaked pajamas".
Also need Harry Potter's Erect Nipples.
SE is not Nazi Germany. We have freedom of speech. Including swear words.
I will fuck off now. Byes ya'll.

@anon I'm working on a 3d experiment, and I'd like to "smooth" the camera movement.
Input numbers range from 0 to pi / 4, and I'd like them to be smoothed such as smooth(0) = 0, smooth(pi / 16) = pi / 40, smooth(pi / 8) = pi / 16, smooth(pi / 4) = pi / 4.
The result numbers are only examples of course, but I'd want them to look like there's some kind of "acceleration", such as in a log function, but with results within the range 0 -> pi / 4.
Did that help?

9:43 PM
Now this is STAR worthy:
2 mins ago, by Matt N.
I will fuck off now. Byes ya'll.
IMO

@MattN. I was... thinking what it actually means I mailed to my physiotherapist.
I called her a 'crack(insert word for prostitute starting with w)', is that a kind of Greek prostitute? Or a prostitute with Greek preferences. "Do you do Greek?".

"Crack" is a form of cocaine.

Greek for crack.

user19161
Someone downvoted 4 posts of mine just now, I wonder who it is...

user19161
@MattN. See you bro!

user19161
9:59 PM
Anyway, beware guys, there are many backstabbers here...

I know.
I keep vouching for the backstabber badge.

user19161
They can talk to you nicely and then backstab you the next moment.

user19161
@JonasTeuwen I trust you are not a backstabber bro.

user19161
Anyway, to the downvoter, I will be deleting my account soon, so feel free to downvote me, reputation does not matter to me as much as people.

10:13 PM
@JasperLoy I am not a backstabber. I despise backstabbers. If I were to stab someone in the back, I'd inform him first.

user19161
@JonasTeuwen Hahaha. I trust only some people on this site. Who I won't say, but you are one of those I trust.

Thanks! Such things are important to me.

@CтарыйДжон Hello.

@PeterTamaroff Hi - how are things going?

10:24 PM
@κρανίοπεριπολία fine fine fine, and you?

@CтарыйДжон Everything's pretty quiet and boring.
I'm watching Breaking Bad, though.

Fuq this shit. I'm going out for beer. Bye!

user19161
@JonasTeuwen Bye! I am leaving this backstabbing place too.

11:36 PM
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Hola!

hey! :-)
Hi all
and as we speak one Korea declares war on another Korea
sigh

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez WOW!
No te puedo creer...

that's what my source tell me
I have undercover agents everywhere
EVERYWHERE

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez You're like Lord Vardys.

he's just an amateur
(whomever he may be)

11:40 PM
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez hahahahaha

/me googles

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Game of Thrones.

ah
one of my easter holidayy resolutions was to watch season two of that

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez It is pretty nice. Season 3 starts in 2 days!

that's why
I work best when under that sort of pressure

11:42 PM
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez hahaha, well, I have it, I can burn them in a CD for you.

Oh, but I couldn't give them to you till Thursday.

itś been sitting on my HD for... a year or so
how's classes so far?

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Nothing really new, except some directed graphs to represent relations on sets. I enjoy Guccione's (Juan? Jorge?) classes.
On the other hand, the prof in Analysis I is kinda messy.
But he ends up doing nice proofs, however.

11:45 PM
Lami Dozo is the name.

He's probably in his late 50s, maybe a little more.

yeah, I know
you should remember that we all know each other :P

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Right =)
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez What does he work in?

analisys, functional analysis

11:48 PM
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez I figured.
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Siempre fueron sin "nota" los parciales?

nope
which course is that?

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez can you help me?

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Algebra I and Analysis I, AFAIK.

user19161
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez WTF! Thanks for telling us. I have not read the news for 9000 years!

@JasperLoy I think it will be a short war, if any.

11:51 PM
@PeterTamaroff both?!

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Yeah, that's what surprised me...
Maybe I misheard, or I am confusing one with the other.
I think not.

If I have an infinitely differentiable function

$f(s)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{\mu(an+b)}{(an+b)^s}$,

Where $\mu(n)$ is the mobius function, and $1\leq b\leq a$

That satisfies, $$\lim_{s\to 1} (s-1)f(s)=\frac{\lim_{s\to 1}\frac{d^n}{ds^n}f(s)}{\lim_{s\to 1}\frac{d^n}{ds^n}\frac{1}{s-1}}$$

Is there anything "interesting" I can say about $f(s)$, can I some how show that the limit is zero?

@PeterTamaroff interesting
gotta run to a dinner now!
late, as ussual :-/
bye

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez bye byes.

user19161
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Have a good one. You misspelled "usual".

user19161
11:58 PM
@PeterTamaroff Are you going to change your picture soon?

@JasperLoy I don't think so,
Why?

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Just making small talk...

@JasperLoy Well, keep it up!

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Well, soon I won't be in this chat bro!

@JasperLoy I am constantly considering using a personal picture.
Like Byron Schmuland
