I mean that to me, too localized is clearly a bad thing, because those are generally not useful to anyone.

user15026
@pixel grins Takes more than that to stun me.

@OrigamiRobot Except those aren't extraordinarily narrow situations. IT's not meant to be used because only one person would like to do X, but because this could only ever apply to one person.

@AshleyNunn A lumber harvesting machine is not useful to me either, but it doesn't hurt me to have them around so I can have paper.

@GnomeSlice I think during ITG debate most people shot down the idea that just because a question might only apply to one person means it is too localized. Because you never know who else might have the same question.

@AshleyNunn when I get stuck in a what loop it's normally because my brain is failing to process data

9:00 PM
@bwarner In that case, excellent.

@Wipqozn We can argue about what TL applies to another time. Lets get back to mod-rec

@OrigamiRobot Sounds good.

listen

user15026
@pixel Yeah, I guess that can easily explain my current situation.

sorry to be a bitch
but I have a chicken burger with bacon

9:02 PM
Fishing for stars again?

just sayin'
no, I actually have a chicken burger with bacon
it also has an onion ring and some salad
but the main ingredients are chicken and bacon

I agree with @pixel here.
I don't know what she is saying, but bacon has always been a platform I support.

oh and, it tastes amazing

Pssh, I'm going to get a pizza

@OrigamiRobot I was just breaking the current conversation, no big deal

9:04 PM
That's @InvaderSkoodge's job.

not today!

Anybody here have experience with AutoCAD?

user15026
@Gnomeslice I found this for unrelated research (Go Libraries explanationing....oy.) and it might help you. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/4818/…

@fbueckert Yes

@fbueckert I am using it right now.

9:07 PM
@tiddy We're sending .dwg files to a client, and they're coming back saying they're getting, "This dwg file was saved by an application that was not developed or licensed by Autodesk"
When I specifically made them in 2007LT.

@AshleyNunn This is just explaining what defines 'too localized'. But I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter if only one person cares about it.

From my research, 2007 is when they implemented that stupid Trusted DWG thing, so my version should have it.

user15026
@GnomeSlice but...but...okay, whatever.

Kinda off topic for bridge. Might have to google that. Teach a man to fish and all that.

@AshleyNunn What? I'm sorry...

9:08 PM
Bridge is rubbing off on me

@GnomeSlice you're causing a meltdown by arguing that the very definition of too localized is in fact, not too localized

@tiddy watch out for static discharge

@Krazer and discharges of other kinds, like mutant brain

@OrigamiRobot What?

@InvaderSkoodge he was blaming you

9:10 PM
But I didn't even do anything bawls

blame @InvaderSkoodge is the replacement for the blame @Wipqozn meme

@pixel I'm causing a meltdown? And no, I'm expressing my opinion that it's not grounds for closure if only one person is ever likely to care about the question.
Things that are too localized in time are another matter.

@GnomeSlice I agree with this, actually.

My local pizza place has both pork sausage and italian sausage on its list. I know pork sausage is made from pork, but does that mean italian sausage is...

@Powerlord yes it does

9:11 PM
@GnomeSlice What about questions that are localised to a build?

@Powerlord vegetable oil is made from vegetables, baby oil is made from ...

user15026
@pixel Yeah, essentially. My brain is melting.

user15026
@pixel only the finest babies, of course.

@AshleyNunn only the finest!

@Gwen That one is trickier. They should probably not be allowed, but it didn't seem to stop Minecraft questions...

9:12 PM
@Gwen meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/4818/… Joel Spolsky says no, a question localized to a single version of something is not too localized

@pixel But for a game that's still in development, like Minecraft was?

@tiddy What do you think I did before I asked? :P

@GnomeSlice he uses the example of .NET framework, which is always in development
so yes, including Minecraft builds

Nov 9 at 19:28, by Invader Skoodge
I just like saying outrageous things to start up arguments.

I could have asked a question about what you get from the first boss in Megabyte Punch a while ago, which would no longer be valid, because that part isn't even in the game any more.
@pixel I'm not sure that's the same as an in-dev game.

9:14 PM
@OrigamiRobot Oh right.

They don't completely change the framework with each update.

@GnomeSlice in-dev software is in-dev software

user15026
@GnomeSlice I would say it is.

Minecraft added tons of shit each update.

@GnomeSlice lol.

9:14 PM
The .NET framework is still going to work pretty much the same way each update, no?
1 min ago, by GnomeSlice
I could have asked a question about what you get from the first boss in Megabyte Punch a while ago, which would no longer be valid, because that part isn't even in the game any more.

@GnomeSlice What about events in MMOs then? They're always ending, does that mean the questions made during the event should be deleted after?

@GnomeSlice About as much as Minecraft works the same each time.

@fbueckert You're sure those files originated completely from 07LT?

Stuff is always added, and things ocassionally disappear

user15026
@GnomeSlice I dont know why you are linking me to this

9:15 PM
@GnomeSlice Each version of .NET is a separate, distinct, entity.

@Gwen Maybe. Maybe they shouldn't be allowed at all. Or they could be allowed, and left by themselves after the event in case anyone wants to know about past events.
@AshleyNunn Because it's not the same.

@tiddy I drew them from scratch.

@InvaderSkoodge I can see where you might have thought I was referring to your robot duties.
@InvaderSkoodge is stupid?

THAT CHICKEN BURGER WAS AWESOME

@OrigamiRobot Yes.

9:16 PM
ahem
3

I was just about to get to that, actually.

now I am stuffed full of meat
6

That's all the proof I need.

you perverts
4

user15026
@GnomeSlice Okay. Well. I seem to be struggling with explaining myself in a way that is clear and I generally want to bang my head on the keytboard because this is too much braining after a day of writing papers, so I am going ot respectfully bow out of this.

9:17 PM
@pixel I starred ahem.

@AshleyNunn Oh man, that's how I feel 24/7. Sorry.

It's the better choice

user15026
@GnomeSlice Eh, no worries...I do want to actually try to help you understand this, I just don't have the mental capacity right now.

@fbueckert Have you tried the repack in etransmit fix

user15026
@pixel Not a bad way to be ;)

9:18 PM
I will star the next post that uses the word "callipygian" in context.

@tiddy What's that?

@AshleyNunn I don't get why you just assume I don't understand it. Maybe my opinion is different from yours.
I don't need to be 'corrected'.

@GnomeSlice Things that might change in the future definitely do not equal too localized. , regardless of how likely you think changes are. Most everything on this site might change in the future.

@AshleyNunn ;)

user15026
9:18 PM
@GnomeSlice See, this is what I mean, I can't even say that correctly.

@InvaderSkoodge wants someone to use callipygian in context.
DONE

user15026
@InvaderSkoodge I consider myself to be quite callipygian, especially in these pants.

@OrigamiRobot You fail.

Too localized in time means that by the time someone typed an answer, it would likely be out of date.

@AshleyNunn I hope you didn't have to look that up.

9:19 PM
@fbueckert Try packaging the file(s) with eTransmit

@InvaderSkoodge No, you need to define your criteria better. /grump

Then unpack them and check if they are trusted

user15026
@InvaderSkoodge No, it was a word I randomly knew from something. Crossword, maybe. I dunno. I collect words like some people collect...stuff.

@InvaderSkoodge Are you challenging the vocabulary of the library queen?

user15026
@bwarner Yeah, who does that? I mean, really!

9:20 PM
I was just hoping someone else on the planet besides me knew that word.

user15026
@InvaderSkoodge It is a fantastic word, and it makes me giggle, because I sound smart, but if you know what it means, I am just a vain, vain creature.

user15026
With nice pants. (And to be clear, @pixel, I mean American English pants)

Anybody interested in Far Cry 2, it's $2.50 (!!!) today: slickdeals.net/permadeal/85206/…

If we are talking about strange words, I pick turgid

@AshleyNunn Even better is Floccinaucinihilipilfication

9:22 PM
Mod support for FC2 would have made that game amazing
simply amazing

@AshleyNunn UNDERSTOOD!

user15026
@Gwen That word just sounds.....blergh.

user15026
@pixel Yay!

@tiddy I want to have unicorns in Far Cry 2, is there a mod for that?

I choose antidisestablishmentarianism

9:22 PM
Mine's longer!
3

No, because there is no mod support

buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo

rimshot

@SaintWacko proof or you lie
;p

user15026
@SaintWacko Some might use that to describe the happenings here, often.

9:23 PM
@pixel ...Count the letters?

you are no fun

@pixel XD

user15026
@pixel Now now, are we really that sort of chat room?

Hey, I don't want to get banned!

@AshleyNunn yes
I am now going to play GW2

9:23 PM
@AshleyNunn yes

without @OrigamiRobot
because he would rather play with comic books

user15026
@SaintWacko Says the one who didn't want to prove anything.

@OrigamiRobot They do indeed
@AshleyNunn I'm at work!

@pixel I just have to pick them up!

Plus, the camera on my phone can only capture so much

9:24 PM
it takes you TWO HOURS to pick them up?
who am I kidding, so far I've only cleaned one room

user15026
@OrigamiRobot they do? That's mean.

I've been home 4 hours

@pixel pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
I hope I spelled that correctly...

you didn't

@GnomeSlice Yeah, but that's a technical word

9:25 PM
you missed a t least an A

@pixel No, I am getting off at 6 today (in 1.5 hours) I estimate 7:30 to be home.

@GnomeSlice Looks like a letter is missing between the r and m

and I gave up after you failed at that

Floccinaucinihilipilification is the longest non-technical word

Yeah, I missed an a, my bad.
@SaintWacko I remember doing this shit when I was a kid.

9:26 PM
@AshleyNunn Yes, they should be punished.

Trying to find the longest words.

@OrigamiRobot well that's a full 30 minutes earlier than your last estimation

@GnomeSlice Oh, I know it from reading Heinlein
He uses it a few times

@pixel It was 12:30 when I said that. 12:30 + 7 hours = 7:30

I would never use a long word where a diminutive one would suffice.

9:26 PM
@SaintWacko Oh, I don't actually know what the word means, I meant I remember trying to find a longer word than all my friends.

@pixel ...

@pixel 'small'* :P

user15026
If we are using technical words, I win.

@GnomeSlice This

@AshleyNunn That doesn't even count technically! o.o

user15026
9:27 PM
@pixel That appeals to my cunning linguistic sensibilities.

Also, wow.

user15026
@GnomeSlice chemically, then.

There is no way that is a word

@pixel It's a protein.

It would take half a week to say that

9:28 PM
@AshleyNunn groan

> Its full chemical name is 189,819 letters long and, depending on how you define a “word” is the longest word in the English language. It is not included in the dictionary – few lexicographers accept chemical formulae as words. But when people go round Googling “What’s the longest word in the English language?”, they don’t really care if it’s a “real” word or not.

you definitely wouldn't want to use it in a sentence

Titin (), also known as connectin, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the TTN gene. Titin is a giant protein that functions as a molecular spring which is responsible for the passive elasticity of muscle. It is composed of 244 individually folded protein domains connected by unstructured peptide sequences. These domains unfold when the protein is stretched and refold when the tension is removed. Titin is the largest known protein. Furthermore the gene for titin contains the largest number of exons (363) discovered in any single gene. Titin is important in the contraction of st...

@AshleyNunn Yikes, need to be careful typing that.

@AshleyNunn I've never actually heard someone use that joke :P

9:28 PM
@SaintWacko There's a joke there, but I'll refrain.

user15026
@pixel 3 hours. There's a youtube vid, apparently

@AshleyNunn whoever came up with that was obviously joking

user15026
@SaintWacko Thank you for catching it. It makes me giggle when I can make it work.

@tiddy I'll give that a shot; I don't see it working any better than what we've done already.

@AshleyNunn That was an excellent use of it

9:29 PM
Seriously though guys, @Krazer and I can beat you all in a 'strange word' contest.

@AshleyNunn Yes but how long did he prep to be able to say it?

user15026
@SaintWacko Thank you :D

user15026
@InvaderSkoodge That is unknown.

Now that I think about it, Socrates was kind of an asshole

@GnomeSlice which was stranger the fact that negrohead worked or horsebean?

user15026
9:30 PM
@SaintWacko BEST REPLY EVER. Means I did it right ;)

@Krazer Yeah. I almost died laughing when you played 'negrohead'.

@AshleyNunn ;)

@SaintWacko There's a joke there, but I'll refrain.

@AshleyNunn ...y u do dis

user15026
@GnomeSlice because awesome,

9:31 PM
Well, someone did it right, anyways. Should be reversed, but oh, well :P

That's ...hilarious.

@fbueckert Yeah you've probably covered everything

@tiddy That error message, though: Is there ever a point at which you get it, and you can't tell it, "I don't care, open it anyways"?

user15026
@SaintWacko Reversed?

user15026
@GnomeSlice I have a love affair with linguistic humor. Leave me alone :P

9:33 PM
Not that i've seen.

@AshleyNunn I find linguistics fascinating, I'm just not smart enough to do anything clever with it.
=[

@GnomeSlice I am more infatuated with phonetics.

user15026
@OrigamiRobot Oh?

@AshleyNunn >.> Never you mind :P

@OrigamiRobot I just find all areas of language extremely interesting.

9:35 PM
@GnomeSlice This.

user15026
@SaintWacko ...you can't tease a girl like that!

I want to know all the languages.

@AshleyNunn Quite.

user15026
@GnomeSlice I like playing with it and messing it about,

9:35 PM
But I'm not smart enough, or don't have the focus to get become well learned in any academic subject like linguistics...
=[

I've narrowed down all the languages to 6, though, that I really, really want to know.

@AshleyNunn Back to cunning linguistics, eh?

@Ullallulloo Argh, flat broke.

user15026
@SaintWacko oh, honey, I never left.

user15026
9:36 PM
@InvaderSkoodge Which 6?

I don't know if it's feasible to actually know 6 languages, especially since I don't know a single person IRL who is fluent in any language other than English, but it would be neat.

FAE
@InvaderSkoodge Yes it is.

@GnomeSlice Yeah, I'm going to wait till Christmas or until I run out of stuff to play in like 9 years, but I thought others would be interested.

@AshleyNunn English, German, French, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese

@InvaderSkoodge Oh god Mandarin.

user15026
9:37 PM
@InvaderSkoodge I am working on learning Russian. It is a fantastic language.

@InvaderSkoodge duolingo.com has three of those.

@AshleyNunn Well, unfortunately, I have to

I'm completely incapable of learning any new languages.

Cya later!

Japanese soon too
@GnomeSlice It's hard.

user15026
9:37 PM
Full of nifty rules, and lots of ways to accidentally swaer

@Ullallulloo Which did it add? Last I saw, it only had German, French, and Spanish.
Obviously, I don't need to learn English.

@AshleyNunn Also, I took a couple years of Russian!

user15026
@GnomeSlice I wouldnt say so. It takes a lot of application, but its doable

@InvaderSkoodge Yeah, I meant English.

I did well in French in highschool, and I've no idea how. I can read and understand the gist of most French, but I can't speak it at all.

9:38 PM
We shall talk later

Although it added Portuguese recently.

@Ullallulloo It is not hard, it just takes dedication.

user15026
@SaintWacko Yes, yes we shall!

@InvaderSkoodge Yeah, I guess.

@Ullallulloo It will probably be difficult for them to add a langauge with a non-latin alphabet, due to its nature.

9:38 PM
@InvaderSkoodge Japanese is next, so I guess we'll see.

When I say I want to learn Mandarin and Japanese, I mean that I also want to be able to read and write them.
So it's a lofty goal.

I know Pig Latin.

FAE
I've had 7 years of French, 6 years of Spanish, a semester and a half of Japanese, and have a diploma that certifies I have university level proficiency in Dutch.

@FAE I know there are people that know this many languages, but my current place in life rather dictates that I don't take extended vacations to any native speaking areas, which puts a huge hindrance on it for me.

@InvaderSkoodge It can be hard if you are self teaching. Some of the sounds your mouth just doesn't know how to produce.

9:42 PM
@FAE Have you achieved fluency in French or Span?

FAE
@InvaderSkoodge Understandable. I'm one of those weird people that learns better through grammatical knowledge in a language rather than just jumping into it though.

Nope, Chinese is next it seems, then Italian, then Japanese.

FAE
@tiddy I haven't spoken either of them regularly in years, so my proficiency has dropped dramatically, unfortunately.

sad face

But I guess he expects the first to to be out this year?

9:43 PM
@FAE I'm the same way. My main issue with German at this point is vocabulary.

user15026
I like using Rosetta stone for Russian.

I learned all the grammar before I even knew a handful of words.

I wanted to learn Irish just to show off.

@AshleyNunn Rosetta Stone is really, really good.

FAE
@InvaderSkoodge Yeah, I understand how that goes. Vocabulary's just a matter of practice and usage, mostly. How's duolingo working out for you in that aspect?

9:44 PM
@FAE It's frustrating, because it's wildly inconsistent.
They'll introduce a word as meaning "radiator", then you use "radiator" as the translation and it'll say "nah, that's a heater".

@InvaderSkoodge I've heard that it's overrated, myself.

FAE
@InvaderSkoodge I haven't used it in a couple weeks, so I haven't gone really in depth at all. And hm, that sucks

Nov 20 at 0:32, by GnomeSlice
I have one steam key each of Crayon Physics Deluxe, Eufloria to give away. Anyone?

@Ullallulloo It is not good as a sole resource, but it is very good at making sure you really have the core of the language down pat.

Just in case anyone new wants them.

9:46 PM
Rosetta Stone gave me the impression that in Irish, nouns change depending on some other grammatical context. I could never figure out what.

I taught myself German with a combination of Rosetta Stone, tons of google searching, and even more google searching.
Recently I've been telling Steam to play games in German for practice :P

I get singular and plural, but I don't know why car should have 5 different forms.

FAE
@OrigamiRobot Stuff like whether it's nominative case or oblique case, etc. etc.

Yea, but I have no idea what that means.

FAE
@OrigamiRobot Subject or object of a sentence

9:50 PM
@OrigamiRobot Nominative is subject case, genitive is possessive case, dative is object case.
I don't know Vocative because it's not in German.

Yea well Rosetta Stone doesn't make any of those distinctions. It just throws em in there.

@OrigamiRobot Which is why you have to supplement it with research.
When Rosetta Stone introduces something you don't understand, figure out why.

But I don't even know what I am confused about.

user15026
In Russian the only cases I have trouble with are Genitive and instrumental.

user15026
I hate Russian genitive. I still don't get it.

9:53 PM
I heard Russian has 3 "numbers" too. One, two, and more than two.
Instead of English which just has singular and plural.

@InvaderSkoodge My main discouragement came form not knowing how to pronounce things.

@OrigamiRobot What version of Rosetta Stone were you using.

Like, how do I make my vocal cords make the sound I just heard.

Oh, that could be a challenge.
I don't know what sounds are in Irish.

Look up the word "cooking"

user15026
9:55 PM
@InvaderSkoodge what do you mean by the numbers?

user15026
@origamirobot I have trouble with the "bh" sound in particular.

@AshleyNunn English has 2 cases for nouns related to how many there are: singular or plural. I heard somewhere that Russian has 3 similar cases: one of something, two of something, and more than two of something.
@OrigamiRobot cócaireachta?

@AshleyNunn bh is like v I think
@InvaderSkoodge Did you listen to it?

@OrigamiRobot Google Translate doesn't have a text to speech for Irish.

@AshleyNunn I am jealous. I have a vague life goal of being able to read Pushkin in the original.
