I think knowing the reasons behind game mechanics might be good for gamedev.SE

But it's completely outside of the scope of our site.

In Riot's discussions of the ELO ranking system, gold does not come into play. I would therefore assume that you just get gold for last hitting things, which is supported by the game play in general, and that they did not special case last hitting a nexus because it has no bearing on the game that is now over.. But like I said, not a worth while answer, just some musing over the question :)

The result of the conversation seemed to be that the opinion of whether or not it was offensive goes beyond that of the person who the message was directed at.

The reason we draw the line at swearing to "unless directed at other users" is because of the intent behind the message.
