I really liked the combat system, but I really didn't like the scripted encounters.

It's one of those "make sure you quicksave before the battle and before each turn in the battle" games.

Where the combat winds up being more of a puzzle than a fight.

Honestly, unless the combat is really tough, I get bored of most RPGs. It's why I struggle to get through JRPG type games, since tough is usually defined by "grind some more"

I'm not sure what difficulty curve I would even prefer in an RPG anymore. If the combat is hard enough that I have to try encounters multiple times, I get frustrated. If the combat is easy enough that I'm not challenged, I get bored. Both are bad.

I like Disgaea 5 because it's not about "do you win or lose" so much as it is about how creative you can be with how you win.

That's a good tradeoff I think.
