Space is a proving ground. I can't say we've learned all that much about how to build better systems, from the things we've learned by observation.

They might have given us direction, or ideas, but it all happens in a lab here on Earth.

I don't think you can say we're "wasting time" with space exploration. Space exploration has driven our technology forward by a huge amount.
