I was told in pokemon go, the pawprints near the pokemon represent the distance away from me, but as I move around I run into polemon and all of the distance markers stay at 3 paw prints, never lowering to 2 or 1. What's going on?

I've used my flareon in the gym a lot, it's been about two weeks of me trying to put it in the gym but when there are free slots open it won't show some of my pokemon, mainly my higher level ones.
