That's interesting, HRC is also twice

@Nzall Clinton is on it thrice.

Probably because it's just a sample and isn't real

@PrivatePansy I'm not convinced.

Electoral fusion is an arrangement where two or more political parties on a ballot list the same candidate, pooling the votes for that candidate. Distinct from the process of electoral alliances in that the political parties remain separately listed on the ballot, the practice of electoral fusion in jurisdictions where it exists allows minor parties to influence election results and policy by offering to endorse or nominate a major party's candidate. Electoral fusion is also known as fusion voting, cross endorsement, multiple party nomination, multi-party nomination, plural nomination, and ballot...

@PrivatePansy You think they'd be an indication that it was a sample if that was the case...

3:01 PM
The Working Families Party is indeed an actual political party.
The Working Families Party (WFP) is a minor political party in the United States, founded in New York in 1998. There are active chapters in New York, Connecticut, Oregon, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Nevada, and Illinois. New York's Working Families Party was first organized in 1998 by a coalition of labor unions, community organizations, members of the now-inactive national New Party, and a variety of advocacy groups such as Citizen Action of New York and the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The party's main concerns are jobs...

Sample ballots are either the same as real ballots, but marked so they can't be real, or used made up names (and are still marked so they can't be real).

@Yuuki That's... Interesting

Q: Are there separate instruments (guitar, drums) available for purchase for Xbox One?

LcSalazarCan I buy a guitar or drums to play on my Xbox One without having to buy a bundle with a game, like Guitar Hero? I can buy a Guitar Hero Live bundle for Xbox One that comes with a guitar. What if I want to buy another guitar for multiplayer? I can't seem to find separate instruments for sale. A...

Q: Is there a resource overview for systems?

dot_Sp0TWhen playing for the first time today I noticed that I have to tediously click on every planet to see its resources and other information. Q: Is there an overview of some kind listing all that information, e.g. on a per-system-basis?

@Yuuki I don't want to fuse with the electorate D:

@PrivatePansy Small parties under electoral fusion will pick and choose candidates from the major parties, as you can see in the difference between the Working Families Party and the Independence Party on that ballot.

3:04 PM
@PrivatePansy I think the Ohio ballot is actually required to be randomized or something
Or maybe by order of who registered as a candidate first

WF selects the Democratic candidate Zephyr Teachout as their Congressional representative choice whereas the Independence Party chose the Republican candidate, John. Both parties, however, choose the Democratic candidate for Senator.

@Unionhawk Here in Belgium the order is randomized, but the first list has to be a different party every election.

@TimStone Fusion is just a cheap tactic to make weak candidates electable!

YOU'RE A CHEAP TACTIC TO MAKE WEAK CANDIDATES ELECTABLE

And this has been another segment of I think @Ash has got a handle on the American election system, let's throw another wrench at her.

3:06 PM
Also: that write in thing? does that mean everyone could just write in someone not on the list and get that person voted in anyway?

@Arperum Yes, but they have to be recognized as eligible apparently

@Arperum Depends on the state.

So you can write in "Bernie Sanders" in every state and that vote will count, but if you write in "Deez Nuts" they'll just discard your ballot

@Unionhawk Well yes, you can't write me in. But you could theoretically write in Bernie?

Yes

3:08 PM
52 secs ago, by Yuuki
@Arperum Depends on the state.

what's the most common name in america?

You're all insane.

@Unionhawk Do you really think there's not someone called Deez Nuts?

@sequoiad @Wipqozn.

@Yuuki I thought it was pretty simple, start on a high fire way in advance, wait until all the hope and goodness has been boiled out. Add money and corruption, throw it in the trash for a few weeks and pull out whatever is left and tada! A president appears.

3:08 PM
that would seem like a good choice

Yeah, it's a surprise to me too.

Like seriously. what is this utter nonsense.

@Unionhawk But I thought Deez Nuts is a registered candidate

The important thing you have to realize about the US election is that there technically is no national election. You have 50 state elections.
Each with their own rules and unique in their own ways.

@PrivatePansy He was a satirical candidate, and since he was only 15 he wasn't eligible anyway :P
So of course now the election commission intends to punish satirical candidates
Feel like they should backcharge Trump

3:12 PM

Ughhhh now I will have to transfer all my 2FA tokens

@TimStone That'll teach you to steal my cat.

@TimStone In the UK you have to pay like £500 to register, although you get it back if you get at least 5% of the votes.

@Sterno I remember reading the sequel to that book.

@Arperum Catfactor auth is the best auth

3:13 PM
Where the kid prevents nuclear war by beating a dictator at what is essentially a multiplayer version of Missile Command.

user15026
@Yuuki I have just decided I will never figure this out

> This book is great for children. Now, i know it is impossible for a twelve year boy to become president...... but it shows that if you set your mind to something you can achieve it.

@Ash I think it's one of those things like summoning the elder gods, if you ever figure out how you've already gone completely insane

@Yuuki can I 1v1 trump on multiplayer fallout?

No. Those statements don't go together. They're literally opposites

3:15 PM
@Sterno It also teaches kids to play as many games as they can on the off chance that they become President and have to face off against Kim Jong Un in multiplayer Missile Command.

@Sterno The American Dream is getting yours no matter what laws of the land you have to subvert

@Ronan Free Iphones for everyone! There's my 5% many, many times, and I will never have to actually deliver that promise, because I'm sorry if you peasants misunderstood my comments.
that's how politics works right?

@Ronan Singapore has a similar electoral bond, but it's set to something pretty darn high. $10000 if I can remember correctly

@Sterno ...but you need to be 35 years old to be elected president

@MBraedley No, see, there was a petition and...

3:16 PM
@sequoiad No you only get the money back once. You don't get it for every 5%.

@sequoiad that'd work in turkey

that's all they've got

@MBraedley IIRC, they get a Constitutional amendment (yes, an amendment) through Congress on the grounds that the age threshold is discrimination.
Actually, I think electing a kid President is actually more likely than getting a Constitutional amendment through Congress in this day and age.

@Yuuki Well, it is discriminatory...

@PrivatePansy I checked and it's definitely £500 here. That's super weird.

3:18 PM
@Yuuki Getting it through congress is just the first step though.

@Ronan So... in a year or so, I can run for office as a UK MP by paying a fee of $5?

Then it needs to be ratified by the states (2/3rds IIRC)

@Yuuki well played

#brexit #cc@fredley

@MBraedley I think it's 3/4
It's a high bar
It's 2/3 house and senate, and 3/4 of state legislatures

3:29 PM
Ah crap, now I need to find my iPhone
Who knew I set 2FA on my Dropbox and then never transferred it to my new phone?

Welcome to having a nexus
pixel
whatever same thing

The iPhone was two phones ago so apparently I never, ever had to log into Dropbox

Also retail or verizon?

WTF updater application!? I didn't give you permission to restart my machine!

@Unionhawk lol

3:32 PM
Ok
Understood

You can even do financing with retail (though I didn't), so there's really no reason not to get it directly from Google

xD

It's exactly the same arrangement as getting it from Verizon except that you don't get screwed

I wonder what the verizon deal is, technically
Because I seriously doubt Google would allow Verizon to sell a locked version
Like, at all

Upgraded

3:34 PM
pls

God dammit IT!

(I'm thinking it was Gary Johnson)

@TimStone What went right for Gary Johnson?

@Sterno My mother would make a fine president

@TimStone "What is Aleppo?"
At least Donald Trump knows enough about current affairs to have an opinion on it (the opinion being divisive and bigoted notwithstanding)

3:40 PM
our local MP is super-hated, but all the other candidates are career politicians who the parties tend to ship in to get some experience, so no-one likes them either

NEW CGP GREY VIDEO!

How topical

It feels like he just discovered the board game Junta
(Which, IMHO, is a little underrated on BGG)

@PrivatePansy I think the other issue is that both "big" third-party candidates have even vaguer than Trump on what their tax plan is.

"Sales tax on everything" - the johnson tax plan

3:44 PM
@MBraedley oh yeah
need to watch that other one too

@Unionhawk Well, either vague or completely unworkable.

Junta is awesome
The original version, anyway

That 28% sales tax rate, though.
I can't wait.

The main problem with that game is that I can never get enough people to play it who actually care about the boardgame part of it, so they all get board when an actual coup happens
Either that or I have to play with less people and everyone gets multiple titles and that's less fun

3:48 PM
@Unionhawk This is fantastic.
Mainly the fact that McMullin has 8 times Johnson's projected proportional electoral votes despite not even running in some states.

that 0.8 on mcmullin is literally his chance in utah times the number of votes in utah

I want someone to bring that up whenever Johnson has a public speaking event.
1 min ago, by Yuuki
@Unionhawk This is fantastic.

Johnson has a 1% chance of winning in pretty much every state I think

They're predicting this solely on the probability that 1) He'll win Utah 2) The election will deadlock and 3) The Senate will choose him instead of Trump (or Clinton)

why is there always urine on the floor of the men's restroom by 10 AM every day?

3:51 PM
It is... Well, it is statistically possible

@PrivatePansy Well if the election does deadlock, it's highly likely that the Senate will choose him over Trump.

538 has a 0.4% chance of a deadlock and a 0.3% of a 269-269 tie

@Sterno because i want to spend as little time in London as possible, sorry

@Unionhawk So what you're saying is that there's a chance?

There is technically a chance

3:53 PM
I think they mentioned that once the first happens, the probability of deadlock increases by... Well, it is a doubling, but a doubling of a very small number
Conditional probability, man. Crazy stuff.

4:04 PM
hmm, 'filth' has a ratio of tall to short letters of 4:1, wonder if there are any legitimate words with higher
my mind may be wandering from lack of sleep

@sequoiad Do letters that extend below the baseline ('p', 'g', etc.) count as "tall" letters?

@Yuuki possibly
hadn't considered them

Kari LI purchased green money when started to build. I now understand that when you do that you don't get the ad videos and prizes from those videos. If I continue to purchase green money do I lose anything else? Like popups with free items? Can I get the ad videos back? Thank you...new at this.

@Ash I picked up Black Jade, just to wrap up the series.
I'm not really much of a fan of this latest trilogy; the first one knocked it out of the park, but this one...? It's just strange.

@sequoiad Also, does 't' count? It goes higher than the midline, but it doesn't go all the way unlike 'h' or 'k'.

4:50 PM
@MBraedley Do they mess with your computer without you sending a work request?

user15026
@Frank Yeah it's just very very weird

@Yuuki Yep. I mean, technically I started the automated process this time, but it would have happened regardless if I left it for too long.

user15026
@TimStone you guys got cookie crisp and we never did, and now this.

user15026
It's just not fair

@MBraedley Huh. Maybe because I'm new here or something, but it doesn't seem like our sysadmin touches your computer unless you need something done.

Q: Civilization VI - Asynchronous Multiplayer (aka PitBoss)

ross.squiresDoes Civ VI has support for asynchronous multiplayer? I.E., can a server be set up that allows players to take turns when they want, rather than everyone needing to be logged in at the same time?

@Ash I know, and we got French Toast Crunch back. We're ruthless

user15026
@TimStone we never lost that. :p

@Yuuki System (and by extension, network) security is of utmost importance to the company I work for. Forcing updates down the throats of users is the only way they get done.

@MBraedley Ah, I see.

@Ash Yeah, but now we no longer suffer even that loss! ;)

user15026
4:54 PM
@TimStone so basically you guys like your sweet cereal. :p

The java update just didn't work like it should have, since it rebooted my machine twice without warning, and then didn't set environment variables like it should have.

user15026
wonders if she can con @worldengineer into that being acceptable breakfast when visiting

@Ash Apparently. Now that we have all-dressed chips too, we can almost recreate the Canadian experience! Just, y'know, minus the politeness

@TimStone Speak for yourself, ya jerk! I'm super polite, and anyone who says otherwise is just a jerk! >:(
I mean, uh... Hi.
@Ash When are you visiting? You told me, but I forgot. X_x

user15026
@TimStone is there anything you don't have?

4:59 PM
Also, anyone else in here going to be playing Battlefield 1?

user15026
@Fluttershy I will be in Georgia the 20-27th of November

@Ash A custom gravatar!
@Ash Dang. That's a bit late for Count Chocula. :(

@Ash no-trump?

@Ash Our Smarties are not your Smarties so I guess there's that

Apparently, I have to add the java/bin directory to my $PATH in order to get it to work.
Let's see if they completely fucked up eclipse on me.
Nope, I guess that comes tomorrow when the JDK gets updated.

5:05 PM
@Ash Do you have Count Chocula in Canada?

Customer: We want you to switch from using this third party calculation engine to this other one. It should be easy to swap out!
Me: Are the inputs and outputs the same?
Customer: Yes!

LIARS

@Sterno If the inputs and outputs are the same, what reasons are they giving for making the switch?

Taking technology input from your customers was your first mistake

Okay, probably more wishful thinking than lying. But ugh. This is one of the worst "this should be a quick swap, really!" problems I've run into
@Yuuki It calculates in about a 10th the time

user15026
@TimStone that's true!

user15026
5:08 PM
@Fluttershy I don't know

user15026
@KevinvanderVelden yea, that is true

@Sterno does it take 9 times as long to prepare the inputs and read the outputs

@Ash You should have @WorldEngineer pick up a box and hoard it for you just in case.
It's the best.

5:27 PM
Just got a call from someone else looking for Sharepoint devs.
Lucky for me, I just got myself a new job. So, nothing here for them.

@StrixVaria so I just finished the book. Going to mail you soon (please remind me to do it if I forget to).

6:01 PM
@Fluttershy I think I will

@arda Ok.

Guess the halloween costume!
cc @Wipqozn @PrivatePansy

@Ronan Rebecca Black?

@arda I have questions.
What part of that photo makes you think that?
Actually that's the only question.

Halloween costume = Scary costume

Rebecca Black = Absolute horror

Halloween costume = Rebecca Black costume

6:10 PM
Argh, my Civ 6 doesn't start anymore. And it looks like validating the files is seriously slow

@arda That's a fair assessment.

okay, redownloading it seems to be at least 10 times as fast as verifying the local copy. How does that make any sense?

@MadScientist how fast is your internet?

120 Mbit

damn, that's fast

6:15 PM

@Dragonrage that nook looks like way too much effort

@badp it allows you to be surrounded by books

I want it

@Dragonrage but the upkeep

@badp to have to climb a few rungs on a latter? Not that big a deal

6:19 PM
@Dragonrage changing bedsheets etc. is going to be hell
@Dragonrage also the risk of falling down in your sleep
sides it's going to have to be a pretty shitty bed if it can fit you in two columns of book's height

@Dragonrage Yes, I prefer to avoid people. No, I don't want to install a trap door under a welcome mat. I'm people-averse, I'm not a psychopath.

keeping the secret passages clean also sounds like hell
what good are lazing implements if their upkeep outweights the additional lazing

And what kind of introvert has two beds in what is ostensibly a single-person house?

the kind of introvert who doesn't know how to perform incremental lazing analysis

I might be the biggest introvert here and tbh I'd love having two beds
One to sleep in, one to lie down and read etc.

But by that house design, the one on library also kinda solves that issue so idk.

And the download just stops after a few percent, it's seriously annoying
Interesting, it seems that Windows Defender was interfering. I disabled it, and it that moment the download ramped up to full speed

@arda that's what couches are for

"I wonder why this loop isn't being iterated through..."
Well, maybe you should use i < arr.length, not i > arr.length, idiot.

@MadScientist if real time scan is enabled, it has to scan all new files, including downloads
which is, I'm fairly certain, what any anti-virus does

6:31 PM
@Chippies Which still shouldn't stop the downloads, it should be able to do that at only 10 MByte/s.

@MadScientist it's odd that it was interfering before the download was almost done
I've seen it get annoying at the 99% mark a few times, but never before
but I do have real-time scan off majority of the time (or whenever I notice it's on)

6:44 PM
@sequoiad So I mocked up a JSFiddle that does the tall-short ratios with text input.

Oh hey, YNAB has reports

@Unionhawk I should get that.
Do you think there's going to be a Steam sale for it soon?

No, the newest version is a subscription based web and mobile client
Like $5 a month with a 34 day free trial

@Unionhawk Ew, subscription-based model...
There has to be something ironic about having to set aside a monthly budget for a budgeting tool.
More ironic than when it was a pay-once model.

I should not look at those reports I think or else I'll get sad
Because my total gross income over the last few months is 0

6:49 PM
I think I'll wait on it until I move out then, since I currently don't have any expenses outside of "I want to do this" expenses.

I started using it after the great "YOU HAVE NO MONEY" crisis of the airport last year

And I don't yet have much "I want to stay alive" expenses other than gasoline.

Spending is down this month so that's good at least

@Dragonrage I didn't catch the other semifinal, who's SKT going up against?

Ssg

6:52 PM
Figures.
Was it at least close?

3-0 over h2k

God. Damn.
Ugh.

Worlds buff.

I hope there's better groups next year because I'm fairly certain TSM could've at least taken a game or two off SSG.
If not maybe win it.

Korean teams always get a worlds buff.

6:55 PM
@Yuuki My bank has some basic functionally like that (expense categorization, cashflow charts, simple budget lists) in their web client, you could see if yours has the same.

@Dragonrage That's because they have home region advantage.
Worlds is basically Fall LCK + wildcards.

Yea I think if it was best of threes in group stages TSM would've won. They have never been good internationally in best of ones.

@Dragonrage Groups was technically Bo2 though.

@TimStone I dunno what they think, but I love it. Best Battlefield since Bad Company 2, imo.

@Dragonrage I'm also sad because TSM was looking real good this year, but they ended up with a bad (for them) group.

7:05 PM
@Yuuki yea, they had the second most difficult group they couldve possibly drawn

Hmm

mmH

user15026
The girls beside me on this bus are plotting slutty Peach, Toad, and Yoshi costumes....

user15026
(they called them that, not me)

@Ash The only question I have here is why everyone calls them slutty costumes. As opposed to racy or something.
I mean, I guess it's a good thing that people don't denigrate sexual promiscuity, but it's a bit weird that it only happens around Halloween.
And every other time of the year, "slutty" is a bad thing.

I prefer "sexy" most of the time, although personally the line between sexy and slutty can be pretty thin.

We don't have halloween here :(

7:39 PM
@arda Halloween is a weird holiday.

> People are dying for a ride in Ellena Funeral Car's Maserati Hearse
heh
@Yuuki It is. But it's fun.

Partly because it's the one pagan holiday that has had surprisingly few Christian elements introduced to it over the years.

But meh, I'm already used to all the pumpkin and ghost emojis at everyone's twitter usernames.

gharrwarble

Everytime you say that I remember of the game and lose it.

7:41 PM
@arda also not really a thing in most of Europe

Although looking at the Wikipedia page for Halloween, it does have a lot of Christian influence, but almost none of it makes it into the popular culture.

I think it's an anglosax… sorry I meant an anglosphere thing
Nov 1st is relevant as the dead's day in Italy

@Yuuki what are the main additions? Satan? :)

but usually all it means is it's happy fun pay-a-visit-to-the-cemetery day

@DoritoStyle It's apparently supposed to be what @badp said.

7:44 PM
"say hi to gramps!"

Like Mexico's Day of the Dead.
I have no idea where trick-or-treating and costumes came from then.

yeah it's not usually about your loved ones' return from the dead as mutilated moldy decaying corpses with optional skin attached to it

We have şeker bayramı

THOUGH

@Yuuki Never really understood why that is, tbh. I mean... If a girl just wants to have fun, why shouldn't she? Cyndi Lauper said it's okay, too!

7:45 PM
Which is a religious holiday, actually

@Yuuki Sombra day.

in Sicily we do have special candy for the Nov 1st occasion

> In England, from the medieval period, up until the 1930s, people practiced the Christian custom of souling on Halloween, which involved groups of soulers, both Protestant and Catholic, going from parish to parish, begging the rich for soul cakes, in exchange for praying for the souls of the givers and their friends.

Name translates to "the dead's bones"
They're pretty good

So that's where the treat part of trick-or-treating comes from.

7:46 PM
It's actually a name that's mostly used for Eid al-Adha
Lit. means candy holiday, mostly used by children. So yeah, kids run around asking for candy on Eid al-adha

Ossa di morto
Really crunchy and quite tough to eat actually
Not exactly gummy bears
I guess if someone was so misguided to treat or trick me they could stand to get their hands on some genuine carob candy
Party like it's the 60s or something
they come in appetising dark brown squares
