Q: Stardew valley Co-Op Mode

Roy_DorsthorstBegin this year it was announced that Stardew Valley will have Co-op at some point, there is a mod out now that allows you to play co-op in the steam workshop. but this has bugs. I've been trying to find any information on the development of the co-op mode, but couldn't find any. When does it co...

12:30 PM
I propose a challenge for the Civ playing people. Get aircraft carriers without ever inventing sails

@KevinvanderVelden Is that possible?

Totalbiscuit did it

Are sailing ships a dead end on the tech tree?

Don't think so, there seems to be a bunch of things behind it, they're just not things required for aircraft carriers
You wouldn't get cartography so you'd be limited to shallow water with your aircraft carriers

@KevinvanderVelden Not sure how useful that would be...

12:39 PM
Who said anything about useful?

@Wipqozn No idea. I've read nothing

@Sterno ah thouht you may have actually started already. I started as Rome.
Rome is a good generic "I have no idea what I'm doing civ", since all their bonuses are just about making them better at building more cities

@Wipqozn I pressed the launch button. That's about it

@Sterno gotta get them trolling screenshots. I appreciate that.
I played for about 1.5 hours before work. Will play more tonight, but I'll also be hanging out with friends.
I would be an anti-social hermit, but my whole regular friend gang is free, which is rare.

Your friends sound like terrible people who don't want you to be happy.

12:43 PM
@Sterno yeah :(
but in reality just yeah, two of my friends are rarely both free at the same time, and they were soooooooo yeah
I'll be playing all weekend anyways
Also I'm not even 100 turns in and an unmet Civ has already been wiped out

@Wipqozn How does that even happen

@Sterno /r/civ has psots from folks with similar stories

@Wipqozn Man, Gandhi advanced quickly

The warmongering penalty starts off small (maybe non-existant?) in ancient era, nd gets larger as you advance through the ages
so I think ancient era AI can be really aggressive, or so it seems
I'm getting along with the two folks I've met
aka spain and france
I made sure to have an actual army though

@Wipqozn That's interesting. I wonder if that was done as a gameplay design decision or to simulate historicity

12:52 PM
@PrivatePansy Not sure

Q: What would happen to my inactive Clash of Clans account?

KsyqoMost of the villages we see during attack research seem to be active. Sometimes you find an opponent that has been inactive for a couple of days and bingo, his extractors are full. but I still consider this as an active player. Let's assume I delete the app or I do not connect to the app for sev...

> Civ VI even has a player manual on how to play the game! It's over 180 pages long and has information on everything you could want to know.
It's weird to me that this is now considered to be something special

@Sterno Nearly 200 pages is quite a bit though.

@Arperum I don't think I've ever had a game manual that long, even "back in the day"

@Wipqozn you need one for the barbarians alone

12:56 PM
@PrivatePansy Yup. That's what I'm saying. I think my Age of Empires II manual was 50-100 pages, but that was helped by it being bilingual.

I agree on the 180 pages = special bit

The manual for Civilization 1 was 155 pages

@PrivatePansy I remember the Civ 2 manual, it was at least a centimeter thick

And that was a printed book

@Sterno Which was also special =p

12:57 PM
Plus a tech tree insert and some other stuff

I do enjoy the foldout tech tree that came with AoM

Big books (for games complicated enough to warrant them) were not uncommon back in the day.

@KevinvanderVelden The official guide book for Riven was something like 250 pages. Just saying. (Not to mention the official Diablo 2 guide book.)

Special != unique

Fallout 1 had a 120 page spiral-bound book
RPGs often came with cloth maps

12:58 PM
@MadScientist yeah there were two barb camps within a 8 tiles of my city
They're both gone now

It's just weird to see them get worked up about a PDF
I mean, comparing it to itself, Civ 5 had a 233 page manual
I'd better get a lot of work done early so I can go home after lunch, play, and taunt @Wipqozn

@Sterno Sounds about right

I guess I overstated the size of the Riven strategy guide. It's only 208_ pages.

Strategy books are also generally really big, but that's different from a thing you get with the game though

Is there such a thing as a "strategy" guide to a game full of point+click puzzles?
Shouldn't it just be the solution guide?

1:05 PM
I mean, it is literally called "Riven: The Sequel to Myst: The Official Strategy Guide (Secrets of the Games Series)"
But yeah it could be a case of dropping hints

@KevinvanderVelden The D2 guide was included in the D2 Battle Chest version. My brothers got the version of Riven with the guide. Yes, they're different than a basic manual, but what you're describing is also more akin to a strategy guide in and of itself.

@KevinvanderVelden Which still isn't strategy.
There is no "strategy" in point+click adventure/puzzle games.

@StrixVaria True
I'm not disagreeing mind, it's just what they're called for reasons

There's more strategy in Bejeweled than in Myst.

@StrixVaria IIRC, there were basically three sections: background and lore, hints to puzzles, and a complete walkthrough of the game.

1:07 PM
@MBraedley i.e. not strategy, not strategy, and not strategy.
I have nothing against such a book or such a game existing.
Their use of that word just doesn't make sense.

No, strategy is the wrong word. However, every game that had a companion guide book called it a strategy guide.

oh good the pedantry tag still there, don't need to add it in :P
bnut yeah you're right @StrixVaria
Odd that Strategy Guide became the name for game guides

Also should we let @GodEmperorDune know it's friday now?

Q: Is Skyrim 13-year-old kid friendly?

CybertekMy son wants Skyrim for Christmas, and I'm debating whether to get it for him or not. He has Fallout 4 for his Xbox One and has played both Oblivion & Skyrim extensively on his friend's Xbox, and doesn't really seem affected at all. For any age reference, he's 13. I just feel like I need a second...

1:26 PM
@KevinvanderVelden already did, but doens't hurt to tell him twice
cc @Sterno @fredley

@Lazers2.0 Oh come on, just look at the labels on the box

Woah, what's happening with the Internet today? Look at this map from Level3 https://t.co/VC8n7iY73E
Oh, well that explains that
Apparently a DDoS against Dyn

Russia is hacking DC

PHOTOSYNTESIS HACKED

@PrivatePansy tbh... if a kid wants to play a game, he's gonna play it. And there are far worse games than skyrim

1:39 PM
sophisticated russian attack on u.s. internet designed to aid trump by preventing him from tweeting

@Jutschge Yeah, but we don't care about that. Check the ESRB rating. That's literally what it's for.

so I finally picked up my delivery. Gonna set up an ambilight system in my room.

@arda Oooo, fancy

also god damn the new wemos d1 mini pro is thin

So I have this weird hardware bug with World of Warcraft where the effort my 1070 puts out is just on the edge between requiring 2 and 3 fans, so my middle fan is randomly spinning up and spinning down in 2-3 second intervals
Thing is, my fan appears to be working fine, because DOOM and Witcher 3 are spinning all 3 of them up

1:55 PM
@Nzall Crank the graphics up or down.

@Frank it's already at max graphics

@Nzall So drop it a bit.
Might cut out the third fan.

I think a better idea might be to turn the adaptive fan control off and just let them always spin at 20% or more
that roughly shows my issue
it seems to be an issue with the G1 cards

ughhh this is taking SO MUCH

Q: Can I restore my wiped out Religion in Civ 6?

Michael CampbellI was late to the religion party, so my neighbour snuck in and converted all my cities to his religion. Now I seem to be unable get my own religion back. In the previous edition, I could use a Great Prophet, or just rely on my Holy City's strong pressure, but neither of these options seems to be...

2:09 PM
Woah, this thing is pretty bright

Coworker: "Hey Kevin, do you know a SQL function a la string concat?" ... thinks "Uhm, concat?", Coworker: ".... right"

Okay, once I get home, I'm installing that Gigabyte tool to control my fan speeds
That should help with my issue

Ugh
I kinda went on a date by accident with a girl like 10 years okder than me for work snd now we're into each other but we cant risk our jobs
from

Does work actually care?

How do you go on a date by accident?

2:14 PM
probably, she's a manager

Because 90% of the time, work doesn't care

either way she's not willing to risk it

Seems reasonable

it is
i know how to pick em
@KevinvanderVelden well I sort of asked her out for drinks but it became more than we were expecting

@GnomeSlice Just find a new job, then you can date her all you want

2:16 PM
tldr I dun goofed

@GnomeSlice huh, that makes a surprising amount of sense

@Nzall tbh I've already been looking for reasons to get a new job, i hate this place and there's a mall right next to where I'm gonna be moving

I did not expect to get a reasonable answer to that question

@KevinvanderVelden thanks
lol

@GnomeSlice now I don't know if you think I was being sarcastic or if you're sarcastic or if noone is sarcastic or if the whole world is going down in flames
Wait, trump is running for president, I do know the last one

2:17 PM
I have the reverse issue: at my previous job, there was this girl who joined the helpdesk and I kinda fancied her. I never approached her though, and since it's 2 years since I left there by now, approaching her might be a bit creepy

It isn't creepy until you try!

add her on instagram and like some shit, see how she reacts

Get an unmarked black van and park outside her house at night

@KevinvanderVelden I can't drive

Leave the lights on and engine running

2:19 PM
@GnomeSlice I don't use instagram

@Nzall Wait, that's the problem you have with this plan?

@KevinvanderVelden Yeah, where's he going to get an unmarked black van?
Not to mention payments on the vehicle...

@KevinvanderVelden It's the most practical problem I have with the plan. All my other concerns are ethical and legal

35 secs ago, by Yuuki
@KevinvanderVelden Yeah, where's he going to get an unmarked black van?

and it was the first concern that popped in my mind.

2:21 PM
@Yuuki theft, duh

@KevinvanderVelden Well, I was thinking that he could apply for a job at the FBI.

I mean that's the beauty of an unmarked black van, they're really hard to distinguish
So the cops can't really look for it

Could we please stop with talking about a scenario that might end me on a sex offender list?
But anyway, our email addresses at work are easy to guess, so once I work up the courage, I might approach her through that path

Well, Plan B would be to get a clown costume...

@Yuuki oh, please god no. you might be laughing about that, but the Belgian police are already on the lookout for killer clowns
I believe we actually had someone arrested recently for clowning around
9

2:25 PM
@Nzall cc @Wipqozn @GodEmperorDune

@Nzall cc @GnomeSlice

Plan C... damnit @Yuuki plan C should have been the Clown plan
Fine we'll have to think of some other plan C because @Yuuki couldn't wait for the right time to bring in the clowns

all 3 esp8266s and the leds seem to work, nice! Now to coding terrible C programs.
Whatever, off to mall, gonna buy some cables to power these, see you folks.

Trump trump trump, don't compare yourself to jesus at a catholic fundraising dinner...

To be fair, it's a good joke

2:31 PM
@KevinvanderVelden I was actually just reading about that

That jab from Hillary about Trump being "as healthy as a horse... Putin's horse" was also witty

Hmm... I wonder why this variable is undefined... Oh, the function that assigns it doesn't have a return.

@arda I've been having trouble with ESP8266s recently. One of them keeps getting stuck in bootloader mode, and the other just can't drive the LED strip for some reason

> I don't know who they're angry at, Hillary, you or I. For example, here she is tonight, in public, pretending not to hate Catholics.
Why does he have to joke about that at a catholic charity event?

2:34 PM
> She asked him to respond, and Trump said: “I am the least racist person you’ve ever met.”

@Nzall because he's not actually very smart

>"People look at the Statue of Liberty and they see a proud symbol of our history as a nation of immigrants. A beacon of hope for people around the world."
"Donald sees the Statue of Liberty and sees a 4. Maybe a 5 if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair," Clinton added.

> A few minutes later, Clinton said: “Maybe you saw Donald dismantle his prompter the other day, and I get that. They're hard to keep up with, and I'm sure it's even harder when you're translating from the original Russian.”
Daaaaaaaaaamn, son.

Right? Damn
Clinton tore him apart
I'm so glad to hear that his campaign is falling apart

2:41 PM
Wait, he's advocating that the financial policy should be influenced by the whims of politicians?

@KevinvanderVelden I was wonderig the sme thing

Also:
I have a cool app on my phone that shows me every time Theresa May opens her mouth #brexit https://t.co/hTRjnNMeAo
6

> “The trouble with technocrats is because they believe they’re smart, expert indeed, they don’t do what all humans should – and all politicians must – acknowledge when they’ve made mistakes, learn from errors and adjust their assumptions,” Mr. Gove said.

Urge to punch in face intensifies

Like how UKIP adjusted assumptions from "we're going to save ~200 million pounds and put it in NHS" to "yeah, we lied about that and we probably shouldn't have been driving around a bus with that written on the side"?

2:45 PM
so called quote un quote experts

I'm still disappointed that Trump didn't randomly buy the Brexit Bus

Stupid timesheet app. Warn me when I try to approve an invalid timesheet, not after I've approved it and closed the app.

Invalid as in "claimed 25 hours" or invalid as in "claimed overtime" or something

Hmm AT&T is trying to buy Time Warner
Because Comcast buying NBCUniversal wasn't a pox enough

@TimStone Didn't Comcast already try that?

I think Comcast tried to buy Time Warner Cable?
AT&T is trying to buy the entirety of Time Warner
Which tbh after they acquired DirecTV I'm not sure how that's going to fly but

@Yuuki Russia is already blaming Belgium of killing civilians in Syria. They said six civilians were killed by F-16's from Belgium.
Apparently they never do that. I've also heard that the proof they are using contains F-16's that are not from Belgium...

Q: Why do I get very low fps even meeting with the minimum requirements for far cry 4?

user169479Im using MacBook Pro 2012 non retina base model. As per steam the minimum requirements are given as My question is why its not even playable in 800x600(minimum) resolution in comfortable frame rate?

@Unionhawk late 90s
after Netscape, before Firefox
or something

Oh well then in that case no

looks at @Sterno

Job, get.
At 10k above what I was making before.

Now is the appropriate time to Woohoo and Hooray @TimStone @SaintWacko

3:25 PM
@Unionhawk I only entered 38 hours when I was supposed to enter 40. Overtime goes into a flex bank.

Hooray!

@Frank And I will throw in a Yay

@Frank grats. More Access?

I don't feel like "more access" and grats should be in the same sentence

Q: BF4: rent-a-server - Can i turn "off" my server and save days like this?

VahxFor Battlefield 4, you can rent serves to play on. Prices variate between $0.8 to $1.5 a day. Sometimes i see servers, that i have under my favorites, are missing. Is this because they are turned "off" somehow? If this is possible, will i be able to save days on my subscription counter this way...

> Instead of fixing the bug or not using such obviously unsuitable software the software apparently evaluates the following characters - if there is a number after the small l it reads the l as the number 1. Similar issues with o/0.
Why. Why. Why. WHY.

who what no
how
How the fuck do you manage to do that
Do you like, screenshot then OCR the input or something?

Simple, s/o([0-9])/0\1/g and s/1([^0-9])/l\1/g`

No shut up

It's not that difficult to imagine @Unionhawk, just use regular expressions, throw in some HTML, speak the unutterable words of doom and all will be fiiiine

3:34 PM
@Unionhawk yes that's the whole point
> Following an English summary of the discoveries in the above link:
> - Comodo uses WHOIS service to obtain the authorised email address for a domain
> - This is not possible for .eu and .be as those do not give email addresses with the WHOIS service
> - So for such TLDs Comodo deemed it appropriate to use OCR to parse the picture of the email address returned by web-whois.
what @Yuuki quoted comes right after

...o

,,,, Dx

I offered that as an incredibly dumb option

@badp More Access, true.
But they're considering rewrites.

But yeah, whois returns an image of an email

3:42 PM
@Frank what
@Frank why
@Frank stop
why do you do this to yourself @Frank

@badp Because the company is 30 years old and needs to be dragged into the modern era.
And I'm just the guy to do the dragging.
Besides, shovelling shit commands a premium.

@TimStone oh my god

well a monetary premium to offset the brain and emotional damage

Combat pay, really

So going to ask for a tip, mainly

3:45 PM
@arda I usually do 15%.

I do %0.

@Frank nice, congratulations

It's mainly a cultural thing

@badp At a certain point, the damage is all done and you're just left with the apathy.

Whatever, to the actual question

3:45 PM
@Wipqozn Wee! I make...well, ungodly amounts of money now.
For this area, anyways.

Yeah, I wish we paid workers actual wages and not make them rely on this whole tipping thing.
It's BS.

I wish I made ungodly amounts of money

I wish I made money.

In fact yeah, currently

There's banks that could provide you with it for the small fee of 1) balaclava 2) some guns 3) a getaway car

3:46 PM
No screw that

But I start in ten days. So I have another week.

(today really is "Kevin advocates illegal and immoral acts" day isn't it?)

I do not wish I made ungodly amounts of money if it means Access and VBA

There will be constant communication between my pc and 3 esp8266s. The data needs to be transmitted as quickly as possible, non-stop. I'll use UDP for the speed and well, there is no reason for verification of data. Should I put the udp server code on each of ESP8266s or on the pc?

I've played Payday 2 enough to know it's harder than that

3:47 PM
there is money, there is a lot of money, and then there is too much money

@Unionhawk If you're single and cautious about your finances it's not hard to save up a ton of cash even with a reasonable salary

Yes

…Just don't then also go have a kid

@badp What about suffering through Access and VBA, in order to bring them into something like .NET?

(fyi)

3:47 PM
@TimStone That is the plan

thumbs up

@TimStone it's actually easier if you're not single, as long as both of you are sensible people

@Frank depends deeply on who "them" is

@badp The company itself.

yes
it depends deeply on the company

3:48 PM
Plus, travel to California and Florida, and most likely New Zealand as well.

@Chippies Yeah, there are a lot of factors that go into that, but that can be true

because you're making it sound like charity
so it needs to be for a good cause
:)

@badp Less charity, and more modern processes.
They're already thinking about a rewrite, so that's already in my favor.

Oh well then

Huh. I think this current starlist has the highest average stars per post I've seen.

3:56 PM
@badp I have a coworker who still uses it

@Sterno but am I making this up or was there a time when Opera was like actually relevant
I know it was relevant to me but it might've just been lil 12yo hipster me

It was relevant more in Europe so that sounds right

I don't know. I briefly used Opera but can't remember when.
Netscape Navigator, baby!

Opera was great until it switched to Chromium engine
that's when I switched to Chrome
Opera was always a lot more lightweight and loaded pages faster than Firefox

there were a lot of quirks tho
comes with having your own rendering and javascript implementations

4:01 PM
@badp it was more secure in many ways, but no one bothered supporting it, so it ended up not rendering many pages correct

also since, yknow, "it works on Internet Explorer"
and Microsoft was not very interested in playing ball

4:21 PM
@Frank Excellent

@Wipqozn not a friday link. Sad!

@GodEmperorDune TIL @GodEmperorDune lives Friday

@Wipqozn how else would i know when to wake up or which seat to take?
