Length zero0 = new Length(0.0, Unit.MM);
System.out.println("Does zero equal zero? ");

does anyone think this is correct behaviour?

It just adds a ton of extra overhead to site curation.

I will form my own opinion thanks

@Unionhawk Yes, you do that. And I'll form my own.
That that stance is dangerous.

Q: Can you build on top of every vehicle?

LlamageddonE.g. can I build on quads? Racecars? Or is the capability limited to a chosen few vehicles?

i think it's so unfair that a user would lose rep just because the game got an update
wether that be by downvotes or deletion

Wait...I just re-read his proposal.
Deletion of accepted answers, I would support, for those about online games.

@Aequitas I raised this issue in a comment. Not a fan of that either.

12:39 AM
It's complicated. It's certainly true that an accepted answer can become completely invalid

@twobugs Which is true.

@Frank The only technical problem here is the only people who can delete positively scored answers are moderators

Generally that only applies to games that effectively only have one version.
@Unionhawk Yeah. It adds to the moderation overhead, any way you look at it.

I guess it just feels wrong that a positively scored answer could be deleted. Maybe marked with some sort of [LEGACY] header?

@twobugs After a certain point, answerers don't lose rep from deleted answers.

12:41 AM

So those very little reason to keep outdated answers.

True, I just don't think the answer should be completely deleted. I think it still serves a purpose, just a less important one

@twobugs How so?

If I can come up with a coherent point I'll post it as a meta answer, but I view it kind of like old newspapers. They're useless to most people, but for someone trying to understand context and/or how things used to be, they're important
They shouldn't "compete" with an up-to-date answer, though.

@twobugs Which would be good, if that was a role Arqade was meant to fulfill.

12:43 AM
I think that's a fair counterpoint. I'll have to mull over this.

I'd be interested in hearing what you come up with.

And, now that I think about it, there is literally a flag reject reason in the moderator tools that indicates that mod flags should not be used to point out technical inaccuracies.
(iirc, anyway)

@Unionhawk There is. But I'm sure where you're going with that.

1:00 AM
I'm just thinking out loud, naming specific reasons why we currently don't do this

Derp. Missed a word. I wasn't sure where you were going with that.

1:14 AM
I feel like, while it is undesirable to have a positively scored answer hanging around that is inaccurate, it isn't the job of the moderators to determine the accuracy of an answer.

Q: can you stop clipping whilst building in fallout 4?

ElliottAre there any console commands or tricks in fallout 4 to enable you to place objects next to or slightly overlapping other objects in settlements like fence to remove annoying spaces where the collisions normally stop you from placing objects?

I agree with the legacy thing on the answer, legacy answers go beneath all other answers maybe even if accepted
but that's not a current feature of SE sites is it?

user15026
@Unionhawk yeah, it's "flags should not be used to indicate technical inaccuracies or an altogether wrong answer"

user15026
Something like that.

user15026
@Aequitas no, it's not.

1:31 AM
I think requesting new features is a bit of a non-starter.

@Frank defs
Can always edit in "This answer is outdated as of Patch x.x on dd/mm/yyyy." But the problem with this is it doesn't affect visibility.

IceMetalPunkI'm a long-time programmer, but I'm very new to both Java and Forge/Minecraft modding. Q: Elizabeth and Booker saying things like "huh"

VaindilIn BioShock Infinite, as I walk around I'll hear Elizabeth or Booker say "huh", "hmmm", etc. Does this mean anything? It doesn't seem to happen when I do anything specific like standing around for too long, they just do it.

> Simple mathematics tells us that the population of the Universe must be zero. Why? Well given that the volume of the universe is infinite there must be an infinite number of worlds. But not all of them are populated; therefore only a finite number are. Any finite number divided by infinity is as close to zero as makes no odds, therefore we can round the average population of the Universe to zero, and so the total population must be zero.

@PrivatePansy that's correct though, on average it is
or probably is, we don't even know if there's life on mars let alone in other galaxies

@Aequitas No, it's missing the word "density".
You don't divide by anything when you're calculating population.

Yes

You just count up. Population density is when you divide by the area the population covers.

average population is the same as waht you're saying you add zeros and divide by an extra 1

Average population is when you take the summed population of similar things and divide by the number of similar things.
So "average population of a city" is if you total up all the people in X number of cities and divide by X.
"Average population of the universe" involves finding multiple universes.
But when you're looking at one universe in particular, you can't talk about "average population".
Except when you're referring average populations of things inside the universe, like the average population of a galaxy.

@yuuki I don't think thats right, you would count the population on each planet and average those otu

How would you do that? And why?
Finding population is a very simple (if tedious) counting game. There's no need for averages.

@Aequitas Then that's the average population of a planet

@Yuuki because thats what the quote said, "average population"

2:24 AM
> " the population of the Universe must be zero"
And if you're referring the last part, "average population of the Universe" is a weird term. Most because what are you averaging against?

@murgatroid99 an average ppopulation of a planet in the universe, you need a larger enclosing container, with the city example you need to specify, state, country, continent planet etc.
@Yuuki yeh I was talking about the last part, that part surely meant average

@Aequitas For the average population of a planet in the universe, you need to calculate 1) total population living on planets and 2) number of planets. You can't derive an average population from a single planet.

since they say it later

Make

Proposed Q&A site for people who fashion things with their hands, 3-D printers, cosplayers, costumers, glassblowers, makerspacers, robotics, woodshopping, metalsmithing, art and jewlery, papercraft, etc

Currently in definition.

@Aequitas Yes. But the average population among all planets in the universe is different from the average population among all cities in the universe. You can't just say "average population of the universe" and assume that it means "planets"

2:27 AM
Calculating an average involves multiple data points, you can't derive an average from a single sample.

@murgatroid99 yeh but since the universe is infinite it won't matter what you compare it against

damnit

@Aequitas That doesn't make any sense
By definition, every city has people in it. Therefore, the average population of a city is at least the minimum population of a city

@Aequitas You cannot say "average population of a/the Universe" without multiple Universes!

@murgatroid99 except that there are infinite zero populated things in the universe, so it doesn't matter that there's a few planets/galaxies/wateva with life on it

2:29 AM
@Aequitas That's why it matters what you're averaging
The average population of all populated planets is clearly at least 1

@murgatroid99 hows that now?

@Aequitas Okay, I need to understand what you think when you read "average population of the universe".
Because I think we're having some major miscommunications here.

@Aequitas by definition. If a planet is populated, it has population>=1. So if you take the average of the populations of all such planets, the average is at least 1

@GnomeSlice Finally, a dating site for me.

2:31 AM
@Yuuki for the universe split into any sized chunks the average population of all these chunks has zero people in it

@Aequitas Then you're talking about population density.

@murgatroid99 why are you only counting populated planets?

@Aequitas Because I can

Announcement: average population != population density.

@Yuuki it's the same thing as average population except density is an area and average is a thing
such as planet, galaxy, city

2:32 AM
@Aequitas What if you split it into 1 chunk? We're all in that chunk

@murgatroid99 i gettit now

@Aequitas No, it's not. Whenever you say "average population", you need to clarify that. "Average population" of what? Once you define that "what", then the calculation is simple.

okay I see how you need to define your chunks more clearly
@Yuuki ye what I just said

It's total number of people in every what added together / number of whats.

that's the same for density though

2:35 AM
@Aequitas You can calculate population density of a singular object.
Population density of a single universe is an understandable concept.

but you still need to define your chunk size

The total number of people in every known universe divided by the number of known universes is at least 7 billion

Average population of the universe is a term that makes no sense.
Average population of a universe makes sense.
You cannot calculate average population of a singular object.

the only difference is that density is of an area or volume whereas average is of a thing (which can also be an area or volume)

what even is this discussion

2:36 AM
Average population of the city is a nonsensical term.

@Yuuki i agreed about that already
you have to say what

When you talk about "average population of the Universe", an equivalent term is "average population of Houston".

average population of the buildings in a city

There is no such thing.
@Aequitas Which is not the "average population of Houston".

@Aequitas You can say that, but that is a different thing

2:38 AM
i don't get how many times I have to say I agree -.-

Average population of the buildings in a city is just the average population of the buildings in a city.

@Yuuki you said the same thing?

OK, he agrees with us, we're done
@PrivatePansy I've lost count of how many times The Onion has published that article

@murgatroid99 'No Way to Prevent This', Says Only Satirical Newspaper Where This Regularly Happens.
This being "publishing this same article again".

2:41 AM
They do it to make a point

@murgatroid99 4 times - you can scroll down to see every republishing

They publish it every time there's a mass shooting in America, to underscore how much nothing is changing
@PrivatePansy I did not even notice they were all on one page

@murgatroid99 I think they'd have published it considerably more often if they published it every time there was a mass shooting... a little more than once a day for the entire year on average.

@TrentHawkins That's the scary part.
The US has had an average of one mass shooting a day this year.

@Frank and we still have most of December to go. :/

2:50 AM
@Frank dafuq
how do mass shootings even happen, doesn't everyone have a gun? shouldn't they shoot the guy shooting everyone?

There has been more mass shootings than calendar days this year. We're up to 355 mass shootings so far in 2015.

@Aequitas Are you by any chance Republican?

By "mass shootings," the study refers to any shooting event in which more than 4 people are injured.

Q: Where is "Northwest" in The Dusty Path?

sensiwooIn one question I saw, it says the compass points Northwest in the Dusty Path. I looked for an arrow or some form of marking for Northwest in the map, but I couldn't find anything. How do you know where Northwest is then?

Yay, I get to work for another couple of hours even after putting in a full day.

@MBraedley lucky as!

At least I can consume alcohol now in order to dull the pain.

3:06 AM
@Aequitas One of the sentences you can count on to pop up after a mass shooting (really, it's like clockwork) is "if those people had guns, they could've shot the mass shooter".
And it's pretty much overwhelmingly said by a Republican.

For Honor looks like a fun game

@GnomeSlice I have problems with it but they're stupid problems and it definitely looks like fun.

@Yuuki why is it wrong though?

@Aequitas For a number of reasons. In no particular order, "not everyone wants a gun", "having a gun doesn't mean you're good with a gun", "why is the solution everyone has a gun instead of not allowing them to get guns", etc.
And also predicated on the average citizen being willing and capable of killing someone.
Even if it's in self-defense, that's a bit of a chilling proposition.

well not allowing them guns is obviously better

3:12 AM
Also, guns don't make you bulletproof. They just give you the opportunity to shoot first

but if other people are gonna have guns you can be damn sure i'd be getting one too

And that's what we call "proliferation".

I get that lots of people will still die, but it will reduce the number of people killed,

user15026
Augh the idea of a bunch of people who don't know how to use guns having them so they can possibly use them on each other is so fucking frightening

user15026
@Aequitas Nope nope nope noep nope nope opne nope nope nope nope

user15026
3:13 AM
So much nope.

why is it nope? it's better than more people dying

@Aequitas I don't think giving everyone deadly weapons is a good way to reduce deaths by said weapons

user15026
@Aequitas MORE PEOPLE WILL DIE

user15026
More guns is NOT EVEN REMOTELY THE ANSWER.

user15026
3:14 AM
Yes, I am yelling, and I do apologize, but just...nope.

user15026
Giving people who don't know how to properly and safely use a DEADLY WEAPON is not going to make ANYONE safer.

"If everyone has guns, then nobody has guns."
I think I have that quote wrong.

I imagine that people would learn how to use a gun if they had one

@Aequitas That's cute.

user15026
3:15 AM
@Aequitas hahahahahahahahaha

user15026
hahahahahahaha

user15026

@Yuuki If everyone has guns, then nobody's left

lolwut?

"I imagine that people would learn how to <drive a car> if they had one."

user15026
3:15 AM
Not. Gonna. Happen.

@Aequitas You vastly overestimate the intelligence/sanity/motivation of people
@Yuuki If everyone had a car, then fewer people would die in car accidents

Possession of an item does not automatically engender a motivation to know how to use said item.

@Yuuki a car is a mode of transportation, a gun is a deadly weapon

user15026
@Aequitas Cars are deadly weapons we call transport.

@Aequitas There is an order of magnitude more car deaths than gun deaths every year

3:16 AM
@Aequitas What kills more people every year: cars or guns?

you don't just let anyone drive, surely you have to have some sort of gun education?

so. in Video Games. Splatoon won Best Multiplayer game.

@Aequitas Pfffffffffffffffffff

@Aequitas education is not the same as knowledge

@murgatroid99 driver's have practice and tests and deaths are generally not intentional, there's a difference

You underestimate the amount of stupidity when it comes to guns in the US right now.

> You underestimate the amount of stupidity when it comes to guns in the US right now.

Case in point, my dad bought a gun. There was no aptitude test required at all.

user15026
@Aequitas Yes, let's give people DEADLY THINGS while they are panicked and under stress

user15026
3:18 AM
That strikes me as a brilliant idea

user15026
nothing could go wrong

Now we lock our gun with a trigger lock and we put it in a safe without a clip loaded (not even an empty one). But not everyone is careful with their guns.

@Aequitas QUite the opposite. You explicitly don't need any sort of education in most states, and many would argue that to require a burden on ownership identical to that required for car ownership is explicitly unconstitutional.
It is much, much, much, much easier to acquire a gun than a car in most of the United States.

You constitution sounds like it should be revised

@GnomeSlice That is a very difficult thing to do.

3:20 AM

Case in point, my dad bought a gun. There was no aptitude test required at all.

well say everyone carried a gun, was sensible and knew how to use it. When someone came around trying to kill everyone, everyone around them would pull out their own guns, how is that a bad idea? the given here is that you can't change that people will have guns

9 mins ago, by murgatroid99
Also, guns don't make you bulletproof. They just give you the opportunity to shoot first

user15026
@Aequitas That's never, ever, ever gonna happen

Plus, if one person in the middle of a crowd of people pulls a gun, and everyone else in the crowd shoots at them, a lot of people will die
Even if the first person never fires a shot

3:23 AM
There are plenty of legitimate argument against gun regulation. I don't neccesarily agree with them, but there is definitely a case to be made about government control and personal liberty and and and. "Everyone should have a gun so they can stop a mass shooting by firing at the crazy person" is not one of them. It is the argument of a child who has seen too many action movies.

@murgatroid99 why's that

I have never heard a Canadian say "unconstitutional" in regular conversation

@Aequitas crossfire

@Aequitas panic and confusion

is aiming that hard? I have no problem in cs

3:24 AM
How would the responsible gun owner decide who to shoot? Do you just shoot everyone who pulls out a gun before they can shoot you? A crowd of people with that strategy turns into Highlander.

Sooooo....

surely it's similar right? haha

...

Shadow Complex Remastered is free right now: epicgames.com/shadowcomplex

@Aequitas Yes. Aiming is 'that hard'.

user15026
3:25 AM
Okay nope, I've got nothing.

@murgatroid99 hmm

I didn't even know they were doing a remastered version of it.

@Aequitas Yes, everyone has perfectly steady hands and heads, and also has a crosshair in the middle of their eyesight

I would strongly encourage you to go visit a firing range sometime. Take a few shots. See what happens. Learn a little respect for the highly lethal killing machines that you simulate the use of.

okie you guys have such a crazy problem then
dunno

3:25 AM
I am going to tell you all how awful of a time I am having working with VGA, because that sounds like more fun right now
I'll give you a hint: it's a pretty awful time

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Having shot a number of guns...yep. It's hard as heck.

user15026
And I'm just shooting at giant freaking targets that don't move.

@Aequitas yep

@Aequitas I have gone to the range several times with our 9mm. Headshots are not that simple. Even body shots are not simple.
Even at 7 yards meters, I'm nowhere near reliable.

do other countries are allowed guns like merica?
wow butchered that sentence

3:29 AM
@Aequitas Some.

@Yuuki 'headshots' are not a thing that anyone with a gun should ever be trying to take, to be fair.
You aim for center mass and you unload the clip, because if you are using the gun, you have already decided that you want the person you are shooting at to die.

But they probably don't have the confluence of weak gun restrictions and regularly available firearms that the US has.

Canada has roughly similar gun ownership per capita.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Well yeah, but I was trying to illustrate the difference between shooting in games and shooting in real life.

the difference is literally the core concept
okay, so I have a thing that does something now
Now I need to turn that into a thing that does what I want
Somehow
But at least the monitor isn't telling me that the settings are wrong
And... also... it's VHDL not Verilog. So I guess that's another thing.

3:34 AM
Oh, is the right to bear arms rooted in a thing where you can rebel against a tyrannical government?

why are people going on mass shootings daily anyway?

@LessPop_MoreFizz

> Family might be planning a trip to Denver.
> Goes to find his pipe that he bought in London.

i thnk thats more of an issue

@Aequitas So you're asking why people kill people?

3:34 AM
@Aequitas Answer that, win a nobel prize

VTC: too broad

@GnomeSlice That's certainly where it starts, yes.

Huh.
Neat. But that seems like it might be a bit pointless now.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I somehow never even knew they ported it

3:37 AM
@Yuuki touche

Actual second amendment text:
> A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
I hope all the signers of the bill of rights learned something about vague laws.

"Well Regulated"

@GnomeSlice in the parlance of the time, this probably meant "well trained".

@GnomeSlice To be fair, the sentence doesn't mandate a well-regulated militia to have the right to bear arms.
2

Two things:
1) They made stuff like that intentionally vague as far as I understand it
2) They're dead.

3:38 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz That's what I meant, actually
do you have to pass a test to own a gun?

It just says "well-regulated militias are important so you guys can have guns".
Doesn't necessarily mean a militia needs to be formed nor does it mean that gun ownership is predicated on being a member of a militia.

@GnomeSlice No. DC vs. Heller has fundamentally gutted most restrictions on firearms ownership.

So isn't that unconstitutional

@GnomeSlice What's unconstitutional?

The founding fathers originally intended new constitutions to be written periodically to reflect changing times.
Arguing about what's "unconstitutional" has always seemed a little twisted to me.

3:41 AM
Or at the very least amendments to be passed somewhat more regularly.

@StrixVaria [citation needed]
They expected the constitution to be amended, and it has been.

how recently?

@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm way too tired to retrace the entire history of random possibly incorrect factoids I've acquired forever, so I'll just cling to the hope that I'm right without proof but accept that I'm probably wrong.

But Marbury v. Madison was pretty much right after the establishment of the constitution, and was decided by a supreme court chaired by one of the authors of the Federalist Papers, so calling judicial review 'a little twisted' seems fairly off base.

The Twenty-seventh Amendment (Amendment XXVII) to the United States Constitution prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of members of Congress from taking effect until the start of the next set of terms of office for Representatives. It is the most recent amendment. It was submitted by Congress to the states for ratification on September 25, 1789. The amendment became part of the United States Constitution on May 7, 1992, following a record-setting ratification period of 202 years, 7 months, and 12 days. == TextEdit == No law, varying the compensation for the services of the...
After I was born, actually.

3:42 AM
@GnomeSlice About 20 years most recently.

> a record-setting ratification period of 202 years, 7 months, and 12 days.
Damn, son.

Leaving aside the bill of rights, we've averaged an amendment once every 15-20 years. We're due for another one.
But... ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I propose that the next amendment be fixing the voting system, but good luck with that.

@LessPop_MoreFizz The process of the judicial system sounds fine in theory; the twisted part to me is that we're still basing modern decisions off a document written 200+ years ago. It has aged surprisingly well, but it's a bit dated.

@StrixVaria Better than the UK, which bases modern decisions off a document that doesn't exist (they don't have a written constitution, IIRC).
@LessPop_MoreFizz Ew, I have to create an Epic Games account and install their launcher.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Lmao, I'm surprised they got away with this
@LessPop_MoreFizz This is actually clever even for the simpsons

@GnomeSlice Even moreso if you know about the mid 90's context regarding flag burning

I don't

@GnomeSlice tl;dr, in the late 80's/early 90's, the Supreme Court decided a series of cases, most notably (and starting with), Texas V. Johnson, in which they held that laws prohibiting the burning of the American Flag are in conflict with the first amendment, and that flag burning is in fact protected political speech.
Since then, an amendment referred to as the "Flag Desecration Amendment" or the "Flag Burning Amendment" which explicitly prohibits the act has been reintroduced in congress regularly, but it always fails.

stackoverflow.com/questions/60904/… hmm accepted answer is above higher voted answer

@Aequitas It happens. Can happen for a host of reasons.
Maybe accepted answer came in first, was right, and higher voted answer came later, but asker never revisited the question
Maybe the accepted answer includes some key detail that is more relevant to the asker.
Maybe the asker has a grudge against the person that wrote the higher voted answer.
it doesn't really matter.

but I showed an example on arqade where higher voted answer comes before accepted answer

@Aequitas Oh, you mean in terms of sorting.

ya
is arqade and so different in this?

If accepted answer is a self answer, they will always be sorted based on votes, ignoring the check mark.

3:55 AM
You can also manually change sorting, which could mess with things.

@LessPop_MoreFizz hmm i don't think that was the case but I can't find it anymore

JimI've played Oblivion and Skyrim a lot, but I don't know the difference between these games. Can anyone help me explain what it was like in Oblivion and Skyrim? it's no like I'm saying, "Which one is better, Oblivion or Skyrim?". I'm just asking about the differences.

Q: Long lost 3d fps game
Hi, there's a game i used to play but unfortunately if forgot the complete name. All i remember was that there was the name "sub zero" on the cd. Its not mortal combat. Its an FPS game where you are in the future, i believe you are a mech and have upgradable rocket on your right or left shoulder. If am not mistaken, on stage 3 or 4, you get to fight giant robotic spiders.
Its a game i've always dreamed to play again, although its a very old game. By the way it has 3d graphics. Please help me in finding the game that marked my childhood, thanks.

@HishamMaudarbocus It's definitely Mecha Mortal Kombat 3Doom

nope sure its not Mecha Mortal Kombat 3Doom

@LessPop_MoreFizz nice

@LessPop_MoreFizz Oof. I see their point, but I'm not sure including Mr NRA guy under the terrorist label like that is doing their side any favours. I mean, if we're being honest, the issue is sufficiently polarized that nothing this side says if going to convince the "gun nuts". But it may just be enough to convince the few people who are open to being swayed that your position is crazy any you shouldn't be listened to at all.

Q: How do I efficiently scrap junk?

fbreretoI have hundreds of pieces of junk that would weigh less if they were scrapped. I know I can drop and scrap them while in Workshop mode, but the quantity of items makes this impractical. Is there an efficient way of breaking down junk items into their scrap components?

@LessPop_MoreFizz I know. I've seen that. While my atheistic leanings may make me very biased while processing this, I feel you might be able to convince a fair number of theists (with the exception of the sort who believe prayer alone is a superior cure cure than any proven modern medicine) that prayer alone won't solve this problem, and that 'we' need to do something more than pray.
I also fully believe that if we keep calling these domestic terrorists what they are, the label might stick and something might come from that... But to include LaPierre, no matter how much you hate the NRA's influence on politics, that may be a bridge to far and only serves to feed an echo chamber (Like a reverse FOX).
