@OrigamiRobot I attack with a 2/2. You block with two 1/1s, X and Y. I arbitrarily choose to damage X, then Y, since it doesn't matter. Then you giant growth X. Under old combat rules, I could still at least kill Y. Now I can't.

@FAE I got frustrated with the RNG basically determining the outcome of one of the boss battles.

@FAE I found that the linearity actually made me more engaged with it. Less decision paralysis.

I got depressed with <Auto><Auto><Auto> Paradigm Shift as the only relevant battle command.

@Frank I can see that, but I felt like... I dunno, it was mostly spamming one button to get through the majority of the battles at that point and I was rather "Meeeeeh" about that.

Although, the optional bosses will eat you for breakfast if you do that.

Which is where the real fun came in for me.

Lightning Returns looks like it gets rid of the whole non-thinking battles anyways.

@Frank I'm kind of turned off by the whole "we thought it a priority to enlarge her breasts and give them physics" thing.

The odd part is, other FF games are pretty much the same way. You more or less enter the same commands over and over every fight, in the same pattern. But for some reason, automating that rather than making you do it makes it a lot less fun.

@Frank Does it get rid of the whole "if your party AI decides to all group together to tank an AoE attack, you die" thing? Because I hated Barthandelus because of that.

@Sterno The actual gameplay in the very early FF games was magic and item management - did you have enough spells and potions to get to the end of the dungeon.

@JasonBerkan I don't know. I recently replayed 1 and yeah, you could run out of mana, but only if you were really pushing it. And I rarely used items.
