So my "starting build" for a city always consists of a coal and waste incineration plant.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone: Still, I'd prefer not to have one of those in my city at all. Instead I just set up a city in the region as the dump for everyone.

Coal for electricity, waste incineration for... well, waste.
@oKtosiTe Yeah, that also works. The neighbouring city thing in SC4 is a bit cheesy

how do you turn this on

Yeah, it's a good one for beginning cities.
@fredley Age of Empires!

now if only I hadn't been required to waste my reopen vote on one person deciding he wanted the question closing

5:02 PM
@oKtosiTe II

Apparently every city is surrounded by a force field that keeps pollution, crime, radiation and any other harmful stuff inside each city
O CANADA

@fredley: I'm a bit fuzzy on that, didn't use the cheats that much.

@kalina If only you wouldn't vote to reopen a question that's clearly currently off topic.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Slow riot for new?

Q: In region public games, is there chatting?

Ryan MortierI can't find this anywhere and I haven't been able to get past the server issues. If you join a public game in say a region that has 4 other players building cities, can you chat with those players in game?

5:02 PM
One of my favorite cheats.

Q: What unique items should I hang on to?

agent86Often times, as quest rewards, I end up with a unique item. Most of the time, I take a look at it and go "meh, this is garbage compared to what I have now" and mark it as junk. However, many of these items have special properties that overcome their junk stats. I've taken to checking the wik...

Q: Does adding additional vehicles to city services increase coverage area?

Tater596After having been graciously granted two hours of server issue free playtime last night, I have some questions relating to police, fire, and health services coverage. Does adding additional vehicles actually increase the service area of these buildings? Or does it simply make them more effective...

@fbueckert "people are allowed to use their votes as they want"

@fredley French bands now! =D

@kalina Exactly.

5:03 PM
except moderators, since their votes are overriding of the system

@Michel Air, Daft Punk

So why are you complaining about it.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Brings back memories

We are also the biggest Stack Exchange 2.0 site, I think. — Raven Dreamer 17 hours ago

@kalina Down vote them all /o/

5:03 PM
@Michel Etienne de Crecy

@Wipqozn Not quite, but close.

@fbueckert because one mod used their vote to kill a question, without any input from the community, so I had to cast a vote to undo that

@Wipqozn Depends on how you define "biggest"

which means now I can't cast a vote to undo you closing it
at least this time it was a community effort

5:04 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Does this not include Stack Overflow...?

rather than one person doing what he wants

@fredley DP doesn't count >.<

@Wipqozn Stack Overflow is not an SE 2.0 site.
SOFU = SE 1.0

@kalina It's clearly off-topic; that's exactly what mod votes are for.

@Michel Daft Punk always counts

5:04 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz huh, interesting.

@Michel Les Sans Coulottes.

There's not a single point of dissension that it's on-topic.

@fbueckert disagree, it's off topic in your eyes, but I haven't seen you close every pre-order question yet so you're still being inconsistent

@LessPop_MoreFizz But it's the same engine behind all

No one who's voted to reopen it has said anything about why they think it's on-topic.
There's no dissension at all on the applicable meta post.

5:05 PM
@fredley Yes, SE 2.0 specifically refers to the expansion of the network beyond SOFU via the Area 51 process though.

Which question are you guys Arguing about?

@Sterno the same one

@kalina If you have an issue with the way something's being handled on the site, bring it up on meta. If you have an issue with a particular moderator, email the SE team. The correct solution is not to passive aggressively snipe at the person(s) you feel are responsible.

@fbueckert that's because the applicable meta post isn't about whether the question is on topic, it's about *what to do * based on the prima facie assumption that it is off topic.

Mine craft server one?

5:06 PM
@fredley Not to listen in french =P

@Fluttershy I don't think it's correct behaviour for a mod to close a question without any input from the community

+1 for the answer as it applies to truly speculative questions, but I strongly dispute the applicability of this answer to the question that prompted this meta. — LessPop_MoreFizz 8 mins ago

Q: Can I use a PC license to play the Mac version?

thebunkIf I buy SimCity for PC, released this week, will I need to buy it again when the Mac version comes out or does the PC license entitle me to the Mac version? The SimCity Mac FAQ has recently changed to say: Q: If I buy on the PC, can I also play on Mac? A: Only select EA titles are dua...

@LessPop_MoreFizz You always have a good tasty. I'm going to check out =)

@Michel Warning: Les Sans Coulottes are not actually french. they are from Brooklyn.

5:07 PM
@kalina Then post on meta. To my knowledge, that's kinda what mods are for. Especially when something is very obviously off-topic.

Hmmm, why does both .com.sg and .sg exist?

@YiJiang'sEvilClone To expand the number of available .sg domains?

Are both of these considered ccTLD?
.com.sg - Commercial entities
.net.sg - Network providers and info-com operators
.org.sg - Organisations in the Registry of Societies
.gov.sg - Government organizations
.edu.sg - Educational institutions
.per.sg - Personal domain names
.idn.sg - Chinese & Tamil Domain Names (on trial from 4 July 2005 - 3 January 2006)
.sg - Open to all with a valid Singapore postal address.
Nobody uses .net.sg and .per.sg

.com.sg is not a ccTLD. The .com part that precedes the .sg part just doesn't fit the definition of a TLD

5:09 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone Aaaah, could be .com.sg is open to entities without a valid singapore post seeking to do business in singapore?

Huh, apparently .新加坡 also exists now

@YiJiang'sEvilClone My dad used to use .per.sg

@LessPop_MoreFizz yah, like uk.com, and other stupid ones

Haven't seen anybody actually use it though

however theres no limit on .co.uk's afaik.

5:12 PM
My school used to use .sch.edu.sg
I have no idea where the .sch came from

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Do... we really have to explain that?

@LessPop_MoreFizz Game's not out. Speculation. Off-topic.
Done and done.

I know it stands for school, I just don't understand why they felt the need to use it.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone The one thing that still bothers me about Singapore government domains is that they almost all require the www in front
Otherwise they flat out don't resolve

@fbueckert Do you know what the word speculation means?
Because it doesn't just mean "about something in the future"

5:15 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Indeed I do.

There is a strong element of uncertainty carried by the word which is not appropriate to your application of it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz The fact that this question might have an authoritative answer is beside the point.

@fbueckert Just checking, because you seem to have been having trouble with your English recently once you get angry about something.

And how did they manage to get a domain name with that extension in the first place?

@fbueckert I'm pretty sure it's the entirety of the point.

5:16 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz You know better than I why we don't allow questions about unreleased games.
It doesn't all of a sudden become, "Not allowed to ask about unreleased games, except for maybe when there might be an answer kicking around."

The number of registered .新加坡 domains actually decreased as their registration lapsed and their owners can't be bothered to renew them

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Beats me

I've asked a while ago whether the german version of a game comes with english voiceovers. I asked it before the game was released, as it would be too late to find this out if you want to preorder. Should questions like this be prohibited entirely?

@MadScientist According to our policy, yeah.
Not saying it doesn't have faults, but that's the way it currently stands.

@fbueckert Then the policy is stupid and should be changed
3

5:19 PM
@MadScientist If it's out there for anyone to play (reporter, reviews, whatever), then we allow it.

@fbueckert Except we're not even talking about an unreleased game.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Semantics. It's the same game for a different platform.
Which isn't out yet.
If it's the same game, why isn't it out?

We're talking about whether a currently released game includes access to future content.

Questions about the content of a game are useless before the game is released. They are not only mostly speculation, but they also have no real point if you can't play it yet. Questions about the distribution and similar stuff are questions that are interesting before you buy the game

Q: Would I have to purchase two Gears of War 3 season passes?

PurplegothI play multiplayer and Co-op with my boyfriend on the same Xbox console. I was thinking of getting the season pass for the DLC but would I need to buy two, one pass for each of us? Are they just registered to your accounts or will the DLC be available on the console for us to both use?

Close it.

5:21 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz DLC is another boat.

etc,
@fbueckert No. No it isn't.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes, yes it is.
@MadScientist And I agree with this.

user15026
Why is DLC release different? It should be held to the same rules as any other game release, no?

I was just saying that our policy on pre-order policy is wonky and inconsistent.
@AshleyNunn ...That's a good point.

The point of the no speculation policy is so that we don't get "Are there gonna be machine guns in Project Eternity?" and other similar questions that are firmly future tense. It is not meant to dissuade questions that are present tense relevant to a purchasing decision that is going on today.

5:22 PM
Arqade!? Wonky and inconsistent? Well, I never!
2

I thought of DLC as add-ons to an existing game, not a full game itself.

user15026
I think that sometimes we get so caught up in the letter of the law that we forget about the spirit of it and we just blindly close everything that night look like a problem.
3

@LessPop_MoreFizz Hey, the rules can be interpreted many different ways! Who'd've thought!?

@fbueckert You aren't very good at thinking through the implications of your statements lately. Jump to fewer conclusions and be a bit more open minded, and maybe you'll have a better time having these conversations.
2

@AshleyNunn this

5:24 PM
My passive-aggressive star senses are tingling again........

@LessPop_MoreFizz Perhaps if everyone wasn't so freaking pedantic and nitpicky (myself included), we wouldn't have these arguments in the first place.

@fbueckert Yes. I agree. People should be less pedantic and nitpicky.

@MadScientist according to some, yes, mainly everybody who is against this SimCity question - my opinion personally is that they should be allowed

5:26 PM
@Fluttershy Mac version IS NOT OUT YET
so no, it won't work on his Mac

I'd allow questions on unreleased games as long as they are the type of question that are useful before you buy the game. They might not always be answerable, but that goes for other kinds of questions as well. I would still disallow questions about the content of the game or the gameplay itself.
3

user15026
@madscientist sounds good to me!

So, essentially, the question is "Can I use my PC version to play a game that hasn't been released?" I can see why that was closed.

@MadScientist so would you say that this question should be reopened?
@Fluttershy "Can I buy SimCity once and play it with the Mac client which will be out soon?"
and the answer is "Yes - any game released via Origin for multiple platforms will be playable on all platforms"

@kalina Whether the game then runs on both platforms can influence my decision on buying it (If I would mainly use a Mac and the PC version would not allow to use it on a Mac, I would buy it only later), so it is a question that is useful before the release. This would be allowed under my idea for a new policy

5:30 PM
anyway, hometime
!

@MadScientist "But I won't buy the game unless it has machineguns!"
What information is useful is all about perception.
And any question can then be turned around to make it influence the decision on buying it.

user15026
@fbueckert I think that is being a little bit over the top

@AshleyNunn Pretty sure we'll get people that will do that.
Because everybody's a rules lawyer.

@fbueckert Good thing we have Rules Lawyer #1 here to shut them down at the first opportunity then.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes, because then we just get complaints about the policy being applied inconsistently.
Which is what's already happening.
This problem isn't worth me getting so bent out of shape about it. I've said my piece. What happens now, happens.

user15026
5:35 PM
@fbueckert people are always getting all up in arms. It's the way of large groups of people. You will always have dissenters. By that logic we should never declare anything off topic so we don't have any problems ever.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone that is a pretty handy feature

@AshleyNunn Or we just close everything, ever!
Shut down the site!
Can't have arguments if nothing's allowed!

@fbueckert Do you realize how incredibly hostile and toxic things have gotten recently? Do you really think that it's an improvement? Do you really not think you have a large part to play in that?

user15026
@fbueckert I sense your sarcasm, but I am being rather serious. Trying to make hard and fast rules apply to everything is impossible.

@Blem The information is pulled from an old Google Labs project. Unfortunately since they closed that project down the information isn't updated anymore
It's still very cool though

5:37 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Am I a problem? I'm asking that seriously. I like to argue, but I don't think I've had a negative effect on the site.

user15026
There will always be those who disagree. But what it comes down to is the real goal of the site - making the internet better with good quality questions and answers.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone :( is it from the square search thing?

user15026
I feel like sometimes we get so caught up in rules and argument that we miss that.

It's from Google Sets

Where, by being substantially more vocal than others, you can mislead people into a much more draconian interpretation of site policy than is typically applied.

@LessPop_MoreFizz If I'm wrong, why isn't anyone dissenting? I don't know where the line is drawn. I'm trying to figure it out just like everybody else.

Which in turn creates a negative feedback loop.

@fbueckert Most of us are bad at arguing and tend to avoid it.

@fbueckert Your tone for one. You're pretty impossible to argue with a lot of the time.

5:40 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz I get passionate. That happens. That PS3 question, I think I'm actually being reasonable. I'm trying to find out right where the line is.
I'm always here; I try to step back when someone goes, "Hey. You might be wrong."

user15026
@fbueckert maybe there aren't hard and fast lines for everything. Maybe some of it is nebulous jello.

@fbueckert Here's a thought: The next time you come across a situation like that where you're unsure, bookmark it, and come back the next day, rather than jumping right in head first and sounding incredibly authoritative in spite of your professed uncertainty while you're at it.
@fbueckert Note the timeframe in which your conversation happened on the comments on that meta post.
It took 4 hours for me to come along and say "hey you're wrong' because we're not always all around at the same time.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm well aware I charge in head first. Like I said, I get passionate.
That's something for me to work on and not do.

@fbueckert the problem is you get passionate even when you claim not to be sure of yourself.

@fbueckert That's why he's suggesting you just take a minute to step back, wait a bit, and then go in. Give yourself a bit more time to think about the problem, instead of jumping in right away.

5:45 PM
1 min ago, by fbueckert
That's something for me to work on and not do.

Take a day and let someone else step up to the plate if you aren't 100% certain. If a day passes and nobody does, then jump in.

It's a work in progress. I'm doing that a little.

@AshleyNunn I concur. It's hard to come up with hard and fast rules. There are a lot of fuzzy grey areas where we just can't apply a rule cleanly.

Hmm. Time to spend a couple days in introspection.

user15026
@wipqozn basically, yeah. So we have to be a lot more open to those things instead of trying to squash them into rule shaped holes where they don't always fit so well

user15026
5:48 PM
It's like one of those shape sorter kids toys but we are working with jello instead of hard plastic.

The future speculation thing is one of the better examples of a rule we apply all the time, but we probably shouldn't.

@Wipqozn No, it's fine to apply the rule all the time, the key word is speculation.
Not every question that is answered in the future tense is speculative.
Words mean things and that word is used there for a reason.

@AshleyNunn That analogy is making me giggle

Jin
@LessPop_MoreFizz I have no idea what that meabs

user15026
@saintwacko it is making me crave jello like you wouldn't believe.

5:49 PM
@AshleyNunn That too
Especially that tougher jello that's designed to be eaten with your hands

@JasonBerkan I'm bad at arguing but do it anyway because things aren't getting better

We have a thing to make easter egg shaped jello
And I really want to make jello shots in the shape of easter eggs

@LessPop_MoreFizz That's why I wrote the answer to begin with. I didn't want the judgement on this gray area question to be applied to obviously speculative questions.

I agree that speculative questions should be closed as off topic

Oh god, it's been such a long time since I ate jelly.

5:52 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone jelly or jello?

@LessPop_MoreFizz I am so glad that you are here today

@AshleyNunn I blame you for this

@SaintWacko same thing depending on the part of the world you're in

@kalina Oh, okay

@kalina You are lucky I have the week off from work.

user15026
5:52 PM
@saintwacko do it. My mom used to have so many fancy jello molds. Now I want to see if she still has them.

you call it jello, we call it jelly, we call what you call "jelly" "jam"

Jin
@YiJiang'sEvilClone my coworkers want that jzy pillow now.

Do you just call all the stuff you put on bread jam, instead of jelly/jam?
ah
We differentiate between jelly and jam

user15026
@yijiang I take full responsibility for any jello related awesome.

@kalina Jello is a specific brand name product.

5:53 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz But it's like Kleenex, in that it's become generic

@LessPop_MoreFizz I've missed your reasoning skills

At least it has here

@LessPop_MoreFizz hoover

@SaintWacko Jam has fruit in it. Jelly does not.

@JasonBerkan Right

5:54 PM
Jello can have fruit in it or not. Everything I've mentioned is delicious.

But if they call jello jelly, they must call both jam and jelly jelly
Also, this conversation sounds awesomely ridiculous

user15026
@jasonberkan except pineapple, no?

@SaintWacko jam and jelly aren't the same thing

user15026
There is one fruit that isn't jello friendly.

@kalina Right

5:55 PM
@AshleyNunn tomato

I mean what we call jelly, you must call jam, right?

@kalina My personal opinions on questions dealing with unreleased games goes beyond speculation and has proven to be quite unpopular. I am not interested in trying to defend it anymore. I'm not going to rally to get/keep this question closed. I think this is one of those cases where whichever way it ends up I can live with. That's how community moderation works.

@SaintWacko yes

@AshleyNunn I'm not sure. Around here you tend to put in the fruit that matches the flavour of the Jello. I don't know if there is pineapple flavoured Jello.

user15026
@kalina you have obviously never seen old jello ads where they put everything in jello

5:56 PM
@kalina And what we call jam, you also call jam

user15026
@jasonberkan I know there is one fruit where if you put it in jello the jello won't set right.

@OrigamiRobot I think part of the problem is that the only meta conversation we've ever really had on the subject was specifically about release dates, which are bad for a whole host of other reasons. (too localized, etc.)

@OrigamiRobot I don't mind community moderation at all, I have issues with moderating the community though

@AshleyNunn I could see acidic fruits breaking things
Like pineapple maybe

13
A: Are pre-order questions valid?

badp"Shopping advice" means "I need something that does X, what should I use?"; this is not that kind of question. This is instead "I want to buy product Y, where can I find it?" "Speculation of upcoming releases" is about speculating on what the not-yet-released game will or won't feature ("will Y ...

5:57 PM
@AshleyNunn Kiwi?

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Another acidic fruit

@LessPop_MoreFizz People extrapolating meta incorrectly is a big problem.

Right, but it's not the acid

That's the closest thing we have to a definitive statement on the subject, which, @badp I will note differs from your unilateral closure of the question in question.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Oh? What is it?

5:58 PM
@OrigamiRobot Yup.

The kiwifruit, often shortened to kiwi in many parts of the world, is the edible berry of a woody vine in the genus Actinidia. The most common cultivar group of kiwifruit ('Hayward') is oval, about the size of a large hen's egg ( in length and in diameter). It has a fibrous, dull greenish-brown skin and bright green or golden flesh with rows of tiny, black, edible seeds. The fruit has a soft texture and a sweet but unique flavor, and today is a commercial crop in several countries, such as Italy, New Zealand, Chile, Greece and France. History The fuzzy kiwifruit is native to souther...
> This applies to gelatin-based desserts as well, as the actinidain will dissolve the collagen proteins in gelatin very quickly, either liquifying the dessert, or preventing it from solidifying.

user15026
Right. Fresh kiwi and fresh pineapple. Canned pineapple works though. Which is why you can open a can of pineapple rings, replace the liquid with jello, wait for it to set, and bam, you get those fancy jello pineapples that seem to be at every potluck ever.
