Q: Where is the glowing tree in the Scarlet Pillars?

SternoI'm trying to do the quest "Slime mold of the gods" and think I've mapped all of the Scarlet Pillars, but apparently not because I can't find the glowing tree described in the quest. Where can I find it?

sigh I think I might give up on Star Conflict:

> Greece reclassified to 'emerging market' from developed

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Wouldn't that require some kind of growth or something?

is there a way to display FPS on screen in Crysis 3?

12:16 AM
@RedRiderX No, it's going backwards

MOAR HOT CHOCOLATE

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Yes, I realize it's a down-grade. I was just reading the definition of 'emerging market' in a sarcastic light.
Emerging markets or emerging economies are nations with social or business activity in the process of rapid growth and industrialization. The economies of China and India are considered to be the largest. According to The Economist many people find the term outdated, but no new term has yet to gain much traction. Emerging market hedge fund capital reached a record new level in the first quarter of 2011 of $121 billion. The seven largest emerging and developing economies by either nominal GDP or GDP (PPP) are China, Brazil, Russia, India, Mexico, Indonesia, and Turkey. The ASEAN–China Free ...

> Wow, it really shows how poor our language for describing the level of development of an economy is. It's like we never even considered that an economy could move from a higher level of development from a lower one, and so we just labelled all of the less developed economies "emerging" as though there was only one direction to go. Hilarious (unless you are Greek).

@YiJiang'sEvilClone You sure that's not gaming (which is default and different from games)?

@murgatroid99 No, it's games. I don't subscribe to gaming.

12:20 AM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone I mean that gaming is the one with lots of subscribers

Yes, games have 200k subscribers. programming have 400k. mlp has 55k

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Ah, so it does. I guess it probably is the number of submissions, then

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Yes, it does seem that the people that make these labels are primarily concerned with exponential growth.

Q: How to get things off your head in Minecraft Mo' Creatures mod

mopsydI installed the Mo'Creatures mod into Minecraft, then made a fish bowl. After catching a fish I went to put it on top of a bookshelf in my room, but instead of placing it, the bowl just dropped at my feet. When I tried to pick it up my character put it on his head. Now I'm stuck with a fish bowl ...

Q: Are expansion civs/natural wonders more likely?

bwarnerI've played several games of Civ 5 with the Gods and Kings expansion, and it seems like every game has involved a similar cast of characters (Austria, Sweden, Byzantium) as well as many of the new natural wonders (the ones that give faith). This was interesting to see the new content, but now it...

@MBraedley Wow, that didn't take long.

@fbueckert The tutorial didn't grab me, and the account bullshit didn't help

@MBraedley Yeah, their account processes need SEVERE updating.
I didn't even get an account confirmation email.

@fbueckert Nor did I, the first time round

@MBraedley Best part is, creating an account automatically logs me in, and changing your password doesn't require knowing the old one.
@CruelCow I don't believe it is; you need a ~40% interest rate in order for it to double in two years.
Wow, that match in Star Conflict was so one-sided.

@BenBrocka Didn't Win3.1 use "pixel-perfect" progress bars though?

@StrixVaria I don't think so. If people want to leave, they can leave.

@Powerlord Honestly I don't see why deleting users needs to delete their votes as well.

A: Remove the most popular tag from the title using JavaScript

Tim Yi JiangWhile SOIS might not want to do it, we, as the user, can. And the script is absolutely ridiculously simple - so simple that I'm surprised nobody has posted it yet. Ah well, free Meta rep here I come: // ==UserScript== // @name StackExchange Title Tag Remover // @namespace yijiang /...

Shameless plug - if you're tired of seeing tags show up in your tabs, use this script

@YiJiang'sEvilClone users are hard deleted, so the system wouldn't have much to tell me about them even if it did give me such a list (which it doesn't).

I just dropped through the starred list on a whim and read the Guardian article about Terry Deary in the Guardian
And now I feel incredibly sad. I loved reading his books when I was younger. I actually still have one of his books sitting on my bookshelf

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Donate his book to a library.
Be sure to get a receipt and mail it to him along with a nasty letter.

Strange to think that I won't have bought that book if not for the library. His books aren't cheap, and I only got it because I was a fan of his work, which I wouldn't have been had I not already read them in the library

@YiJiang'sEvilClone It's just like piracy.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Hmm, it's actually not easy to donate books to National Library. School libraries might be easier though

Librarians are pirate facilitators, guys!

@RavenDreamer It's actually not an entirely absurd comparison. I've seen the argument used before. Let me see if I can find an example.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Don't. I already agree with you.
And as much as the bridge likes to argue for the sake of arguing... :P

@RavenDreamer Hey! That's what I do! Nobody else is allowed to do that!

@badp Don't you see the exit survey?

Hmm. Apparently, it is possible to install the Homebrew channel and all on the Wii U already.
Didn't think it would be that easy, but since they're exploiting the Wii mode, it makes sense.
@Wipqozn Welp, it seems the Wii U can do everything I wanted it to do.

Just to get more attention on this Q. Had anyone ever heard of some service or server addition that would do that?
1
Q: Notification about status of the population on BF2 server

theUgIs there a service or a plug-in for a dedicated Battlefield 2 server that would monitor, and ping via cell-phone text message, e-mail, Twitter, FaceBook or otherwise communicate that there are players on the server? Preferably, something that can be adjusted to be triggered by a certain amount of...

@theUg Ehh...that sounds like a software recommendation.

@fbueckert Oh, didn’t even think of it that way. :)

@RavenDreamer why are you logging in and out of Diablo O_o

@theUg I know you're just trying to get an answer, but I'm not sure if it'll get anything beyond, "Hey, try this <insert name of program X>!"

5:23 AM
@fbueckert I just want to see if there such thing even exits. Is it possible for me to reword it to make it less like a rec. request?
Maybe ask for generic term for such software?

@theUg Hmm. I'm not sure. You're looking for a method outside of a game. There are things that are related to playing the game, like D3's or WoW's Armory, and we have questions like that. But those are official websites, and you're looking for a third party program.

I haven’t played WoW for ages, but is armory really official? I thought it was a fansite. Hard to know, there are so many.

Q: What's the difference between AVO and DDG?

fbueckertWhen providing battle support, units offer AVO, which is Avoidance. I know it directly lowers enemy's chance to hit. But units can also increase DDG. I can't find anything in the in-game help about what it does, or what it stands for. Presumably, it's meant to be short for Dodge, but I've see...

What if there is an official server plug-in, or any sort of mod notification.

@theUg It's not so much a problem of it being official or not; it's that any answers you get (if it's not just, "Nope, doesn't exist."), is that it's an unbound list. No way to keep an answer up to date, or even ensure an answer is complete. It'll become a popularity contest.
It's the main reason we don't like recommendation questions.

5:35 AM
@fbueckert Another point, however, most questions related to server administration, as tagged, would be outside the game (as in actual gameplay).

Check out this question. It presents a problem. I don't know if you can re-word your question to present the problem without asking for a piece of software.
Doing a fast search, I can't seem to find any question about "out of game" that's not related to games that have a central server type architecture.

@fbueckert So, like a second paragraph in my question?
@fbueckert By central server you mean?

@theUg Well, no. As it stands, your question is essentially, "I have a server. I want it to do X with Game Y. What can do that?"
@theUg I mean you can't create your own.

@fbueckert But why have server-administration then? If you cannot create your own, sure as hell you cannot administer it. :)

@theUg is a different beast than asking for software rec. It's about creating and setting up your server, and if you have a problem, you come ask us. It's not to be used for the example above.

5:42 AM

Q: How do I make an automatic server backup in Minecraft?

jeffreylin_There is no built-in implementation in a Vanilla Minecraft server to force a save every X minutes, then back up the files into a folder. I would like a script or something else (maybe a plugin that's configurable) to do this for me. I know how to do log rotations and I can also do a normal backup...

Mostly because that seems to just be a stealth software rec.
@theUg Bleh. That's a horrible question, and an even worse answer.
Our stance is somewhat vague on that sort of thing; we're going through a phase about mod recommendations, and that's throwing some recommendations into gray areas.
Hence why there's no close votes on yours, or that one.

Me lucky. :D
Should I ask on meta about rewording it? Pro-actively, before I get axed?

@theUg Ehh. It shouldn't be a luck sort of thing.
@theUg If you want to be proactive about it, it might spur us to define right where we want to draw the line on catalogue type questions.

A question being closed doesn't necessarily mean it is "axed". Just that it may need clean up (sometimes)

@Ktash What's your view on the Minecraft question above? Is it a catalogue question?

5:49 AM
I've voted to close your question, by the way. Personally, I feel it falls to close to the recommendation line
The minecraft one?

@Ktash Yeah

@fbueckert Hmm, don't know a lot about minecraft, but give me a sec to read it over
> I would like a script or something else (maybe a plugin that's configurable) to do this for me
software rec

@Ktash Good. That's the way I read it.

Also, I kind of laughed at the fact that if that was asked on SO, it would have been met with a "what have you tried" or "do it yourself"

@Ktash SO is for programmers; we don't automatically assume the person asking the question has the expertise to create their own.
Which I'd really like to do, sometimes.

5:52 AM
Heh, no. But I chuckled :)

@Ktash, so, how do I fix that?

Sidenote, @theUg, I've also VTC'ed for the same reason.

@theUg Honestly, I'm not sure it can be made to fit this site. It is a good question, and one I hope you can get an answer to. But list questions just aren't a good fit for our format :/
You could maybe get away with a simple "is there a way to retrieve the number of players on BF2 server", though that might lead to a solution you'd have to code/create yourself

@Ktash I was asking fbu, can I reword it to ask for a category of software, instead of specific solution, at least? Problem is, I could not even come close on several Google searches to find anything remotely like this, which is probably cause I am looking for a wrong thing (which picks up unrelated search noise).

A category of software would still lead to a list, which wouldn't fit our format
Alright, I'm gonna head towards that pillowy, soft surface where I rest my head for the evenings

Q: When should we edit game names out of question titles? And why?

Steve V.I like including game names in my question titles. I feel it makes more grammatical sense and gives a clearer indication of what the question is about. From time to time, though, I see an editor come through and delete the game name from the title, calling it unnecessary. And I'm ok with that ...

A: Should questions include "tags" in their titles?

Won'tStack Overflow has an extensive tag system which allows users to identify what technology is involved in a question, watch or ignore certain subjects, narrow their searches to a specific area, and even learn about the tag's subject via its wiki. This tag system works. You can rely on it to noti...

@BoltClock looks like Steve's question is more about the auto-suggested questions list rather than the actual act of putting the tag in the title
which from the point of view of Arqade does look like a problem, in that the auto-suggested questions list for 'how can I change difficulty' contains one for each game we have a tag for pretty much
dammit typing long sentences with this much lag is painful

11:07 AM
@kalina then the question would be titled "Please add tags to the list of suggested questions"

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I'd say adding a new battery is a useful thing to be able to do, but lets face it, by the time the battery is gone your tablet is obsolete anyway.

@badp It wouldn't have to, the question is clearly about the list of auto-suggested questions based on the fact he drew freehand circles all over the list of auto-suggested questions
I'm just approaching it from the point of view of how to resolve the cause of the question, rather than linking off to what we all know is the policy on putting tags in the question title

I think the Nexus 7 can be opened; opening it to lock the speakers in place is the canonical internet solution to the Nexus 7 speakers problem apparently
...but you can't fix a broken display
@kalina the thing is, adding tags to the question is the last thing you do in the workflow of asking a question

Also, Steam won't download anything for me anymore. "Preparing files for install..." goes on forever

by the time the user writes in the tags, it's already too late

11:10 AM
@badp yes, I know
but exposing the tags in the suggested list of questions would be a workaround without changing the workflow
if we put tags further up the workflow people would just put the questions in as tags anyway

@BoltClock I'm at the talk.js meet up right now

yes, it would fix the "user story" - as in, it wouldn't have gotten Steve to ask on meta in the first place
I don't think that's what Steve is after however

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Ooooh

Is there a standard for when we should edit game names out of question titles?
If there is a standard, what's the rationale?
If not, can I use my judgment?
Now, as for the rationale for putting tags in the question title to begin with

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I remember reading about that yesterday or so

11:12 AM
Simply and sadly enough, when SE didn't, Stack Overflow was getting outranked on Google by scrapers that did.

@fredley Well, extended battery used to be something that's standard for most work laptops

@badp yeah, it's for SEO

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I thought we were talking tablets?

Putting the tags at the start was the only thing that did work

meh, I just looked at it from a point of view of how to prevent the issue rather than how it applies to policy

11:13 AM
Tablets are inherently a consumer device, nobody can actually do productive work on one

I really don't want to have a long debate with 15-20 seconds of latency

Well, there are business tablets too

@kalina again I agree that if this was true, Steve wouldn't have asked the question in the first place

@badp kinda, but lets be fair, it's transparent with stars behind it.

11:27 AM
@badp Doesn't matter. Sikuli works from screenshots.

@fredley Exactly, it works with exact matches from screenshots
(afaik)

@badp No, it works from best matches.

@fredley false positives

@badp As long as the 'Mine' button looks more like itself than any other piece of GUI it'll be fine.
Also, it can support manual coords

yeah, coordinates sound safer

11:29 AM
the mine button isn't what I would be focusing on
to automate mining you want to check that the mining laser is active
which is much easier to do than monitoring the state of the mining button
the hard part would be auto targetting the next asteroid
or unloading your cargo hold

@kalina True, I guess asteroids all look different.
Does EVE have an accessibility interface?

also not a problem
