That would be a good idea.

At least then it shows that you're putting through effort and trying.

Building up your portfolio is another good idea. Keep doing jobs for companies like you've done in the past, even if just for free.

What you can do to limit the amount of refactoring work is to replace the clusterfuck with an actual object instead, and make it so it behaves kind of like the original clusterfuck

when you get something that runs okay and passes all tests, then you can commit, remove the compatibility stuff, see the next place that breaks, refactor it, re-enable the compatibility stuff and re-run the tests.

Not sure if it's a good idea, but you can do it.
