@GnomeSlice OK. In your case, you use a prepare if a) your teacher told you to or b) you're doing multiple queries that take on the same form, and a placeholder would be useful. Like, if you were doing UPDATE {a} SET foo = {b} where {a} and {b} were two columns in a table or something

Let's say you had a table of information with two columns and 1,000 rows. You wanted to take that table and translate it into 1,000 UPDATE queries, but you don't want to obviously create a thousand PDO queries because that'd take a lot of time and effort. You can prepare a generalized form of the query with placeholders for where the values should go, then use that prepared statement and substitute the placeholders for the values

If you're not doing a ton of duplicate queries, there's very little point to using prepared statements

Okay, look at it from a security perspective then. Let's say you have user-provided data that you want to then insert into a database. If you just concatenate or interpolate the variables into the query string, you run the risk of SQL injection. You don't have to know what that is exactly right now other than it's bad and you should prevent against it. Also, here's an xkcd comic:

Q: Do passive mobs breed or respawn naturally in Minecraft?

I've noticed that on Minecraft multiplayer servers (since mob breeding was introduced), there tends to be a large "dead zone" around spawn, due to over-harvesting of mobs by players. Do passive mobs (e. g., sheep, cows, pigs, chickens) respawn or breed to make up for the population loss? I've not...

Q: XCOM-EU: Specific question on panic levels

If an abduction missions pops up for say Europe, Asia, and US. I'm not worried about the US due to low panic, Russia and UK are both at 4. China and Australia are both at 5!! Will taking the mission in Europe make them leave right then as the panic level can not rise anymore? I have 5 sate...

i.e. Ligature icon for Cancel, then word cancel written out in a standard font. Screenreaders: ok, everyone else: ok.

Oh, so you're using the private plane (U+Exxx) code points directly? Yeah, this won't work and is a rather bad idea unless you control the rendering devices as well.

I'd do the ligatures slightly differently. I'd make them out of ZWNBSP+(word) combinations.

No difference in rendering (or speech) when not using the font, proper ligatures only where you want them when using it.

It's misusing the idea of the font. :)

You usually already have most of the symbols in some place in your general fonts, no need for custom codepoints. The idea here is to just write text, and some of it "magically" turns into symbols where appriopriate.

Q: CIVILIZATION V on OSX is very very slow

I'm trying to play Civilization V on OSX. I have an i7 2.8 GHz and 8 MB of memory but it is very very slow. My mate told me that this is because the game was written in logo running on a sinclair zx80 emulator. Are there any settings I can change to speed it up?

@TrentHawkins I kind of doubt you can build a new computer in two days even if you use an off-the-shelf FPGA as the CPU instead of burning your own ...

... if only because HDL compilation/optimisation times are still rather slow.
