Q: I'm searching for a 90´s PC game (platformer)

vattenfiskenHi, I'm searching for a 90's platformer game. I was like 6 years old when i played it so I can't remember that much about it. Anyway, the game is set in a space like environment. You're inside an alien space ship or something. You play as a soldier and kill aliens. I remember that you could clim...

Q: Will Netherrack burn if hit by lightning?

chandsI have lots of netherrock sitting in my inventory and I want to build some structures with it. Just wondering if I would have to weatherproof them, given that netherrack burns indefinitely, or if it behaves like cobblestone in this aspect and I don't have to worry about lightning.

SisirThe question is really self explanatory. The new games i saw they need pixel shader 3.0 is it some software requirements or hardware requirements? Thanks!

Q: Angry Birds - More addictive than WoW?

6pack kidI feel like I am getting addicted to "Angry Birds" more than I ever was to WoW. Has anyone else also observed this or is it just me?

7:39 AM
Hrm
I've cleared dungeon 1-14, but 15 is dangerous
I've cleared the lair
I've cleared Swamp 1, but Swamp 2 is dangerous
I've cleared Snake Pit 1, which is dangerous
although I now have rElec.
I've cleared the Orcish Mines
Slime pits and helven halls are suicide
I've cleared the Hive
I guess I'll try Snake 2.

7:58 AM
Okay, greater naga in Snake 3. Perhaps in a few levels.
Level 16! New record.
And now I'll leave. Later.

A big chunk of the Stack Exchange development team attended this year’s MIX conference. With tons of t-shirts and stickers in hand to give out, naturally! We managed to convince team members Sam Saffron (Australia) and Ben Dumke (Germany) to make the trek to Las Vegas for some, er, “teambuilding”. Even Jin, our designer in residence, was there. He is so money!

While at MIX, they chatted with their fellow developers about the great work they’re doing. Some of these artifacts are now online for everyone to enjoy: …

goddamn it heroku, y u half down?

The best part of being locked outside home is you're glad you have some sort of garden.
Because with gardens come outdoor plugs.
And with plugs comes juice for the laptop.
To kill time while somebody else comes home.

user30
@badp My garden has no outdoor plugs.

user30
now stop,
coffee time.

11:52 AM
@ThomasMcDonald Then I've just shown you why you need one ASAP

user30
@badp but I'm inside.

just claim you need it to recharge the handheld mowing device you'll never own.
@ThomasMcDonald You never know when that'll change!
Also, right now my cat cannot understand why I'm not going in to feed her
She's been complaining for a hour now. Currently she stares at me meowing intermittently.
Under the shadow of a tree, obviously.

user30
@badp you monster.

Sure, I could break the glass door between me and inside, but that doesn't sound like a good plan.
I mean, in the long run.
Cat's now looking at the keyboard and monitor, say hi!
lol, she's climbed on the laptop.
Just in case her face wasn't occupying enough of my FOV to get me to phase through the door already
I really gotta work on my translocation spells.

I can never get my epic 12-backstab chains going on servers that have replays enabled.
Then again, those are from before my ISP actively decided to hate me.
Oh yeah, DNS is down here at work. You should see peoples reactions. Good thing I remembered the DNS addresses of the local university and set them as DNS servers 3 and 4.
Outlook decidedly doesn't like the DNS server change.
Likely more servers than just DNS are down here.

2:03 PM
@Powerlord I just know the addresses of Google's DNS servers.
8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

@ArdaXi Those are easy.
I thought about using those, but I really didn't think the government would like that.
Instead, I used 35.8.2.41 and 35.8.2.42. Surprisingly, those still work... those are the ones I used WAY back in the early 90s before Windows actually included stuff for dial-up networking.
Since our network has a direct connection to theirs, it also doesn't pass through any in-between networks.

@Powerlord Ah, right, that helps.

Granted, it's still 13 hops away... 7 on our network, 6 on theirs.
I think someone is a bit too router happy here.
Oh yeah, because I forgot to mention it yesterday, I tracked down that crashing bug in Mapchooser Extended Sounds... when this array was being initialized, none of its values were initialized.
Sadly, this was by design on SourceMod's part and I had to work around it with a for loop.
(because I'm only filling a handful of the values in the array)
I may rewrite it later as a named array just to cut down on memory usage. Then I'd have to do an int to string conversion between lookups, though.

2:19 PM
I'm working on a project to replace admins on a server.
Some admins weren't doing a very good job, so I said I would replace them with a very small shell script.

@ArdaXi Heh.

@Powerlord I figure if I said it, I should do it too.

@ArdaXi What kind of server?
The state's emergency notification have said nothing about this DNS/server outage
My boss's boss is not happy.
Sadly, I have no excuse not to do work, as my boss knows my editor doesn't need a network connection to work.
I think she's on vacation today, but since Outlook is down, I can't check.

user30
@Powerlord In other news, I have decided I like Java for today.

user30
mostly because it's playing ball with what I want it to do

2:28 PM
@ThomasMcDonald ...for the love of... WHY?!
Oh.
Most of the time, Java seems primitive if you compare it to C#.

user30
My observations so far still indicate Java < Ruby

user30
Although I don't think that was ever in doubt

@Jin Can you whip up a simple community ad for the blog? I suppose something simple with its name in the same style as the Twitter ads should be good

Q: Are Godville's English and Russian versions the same exact game?

DVKGodville is what's known as a ZPG (Zero Player Game) - it's a MMORPG where you - the player - don't actually control the hero in typical RPG way - the hero levels up without player doing any work. The player just sits around and rewards/punishers the hero. There appear to be two very similar ver...

I really hate it when someone downvotes other peoples answers just to have their be higher in comparison.

Sometimes I dead ring. It what's working best so far - for values of "best" meaning "OMG I GOT THE DISPENSER" when there's a 200 ammo box right outside the int room

2:38 PM
I've had a lot of practice with the DR. When I first got it, I thought it'd be completely useless.
Turns out that, particularly since they reduced its decloak volume, it can be very handy as long as you're not fighting a Pyro.
If I am fighting a Pyro, I'll lead them on a merry chase away from the objective, since I'm likely to die anyway.

user30
unless a rouge health kit appears

user30
then you can do some twirly magic and disappear from the Pyro.

@ThomasMcDonald Since they're likely right behind me flaming me at the time, it'll just prolong the inevitable.
Sometimes, if my teammates are close by, I'll draw the Pyro towards them in hopes that they'll help me.
Keeping in mind that the Dead Ringer prevents 90% damage while active (for the first 6.5 seconds anyway)

Q: Is a Drop7 game 'recoverable' at any point?

DisgruntledGoatI have been a little addicted to Drop7 on iPhone recently. A few days ago I got to the following situation: Is this situation salvageable? Q: Good Multiplayer PSP Games

Rob_IGSI have acquired a new PSP system for extremely cheap during the "network crash". In light of the network starting to be brought back online, I thought I would ask: "what are some of the best multi-player games out there for the PSP system?" I prefer FPS', but I always have an open mind.

@Lazers deleted as well by "request" of asker

@badp and by "by request" do you mean "because it was ?"

@Powerlord "Sorry, I dont know how to take it down now, lol – Rob_IGS 5 mins ago edit "

@badp I guess that delete link below the question was just TOO HARD to find.

3:14 PM
@Powerlord I'm not even sure it's given to new users anymore
if it was taken away I wouldn't be surprised

You need 250 rep to delete your own posts.
It's always been that way.

not for questions afaik

Q: Weird grid pattern on Brink

MerusPenny Arcade's latest comic: This looks like a job for StackExchange! Assuming that Gabe's issue is one he's actually having, anyone got any ideas?

The above question is getting flags like crazy, it's downvoted to the point it no longer shows up on the front page. But, it's got no close votes, and comments indicate there is in fact a real bug (whether or not we really can address it, we've always been tolerant of these).

I fixed the 'it having no close votes' issue.

Close it as Not A Real Question? Or wait longer for someone to touch it up? I don't even know what genre Brink is, nevermind what the bug looks like, and youTube is blocked here. It's getting the attention that demands action to be taken, but in this scenario I'm really at a conflict as to what action I should take, so I thought I'd drop in and see what the people in here think.

It's not a real question, in my opinion.
If you don't have a problem, you shouldn't ask about it.

Mmkay. Anyone else have a different idea? If not, Ima slam it closed until it gets revised or otherwise addressed.

3:57 PM
Yeah, I flagged it. I still haven't played Minecraft, so I don't have enough rep to close-vote
3

@MatthewRead I remember when that was StarCraft 2.
@ThomasMcDonald Hu?

@MatthewRead I have not played Minecraft, Starcraft 2, Portal 2, Civ 5. God knows how I get reps...

Well, it's gotten the equivalent of 8 votes now, after all those flags. Closed. Thanks for the assistance.
@YiJiang I don't play any of those, either. I'm just as confused as you are.

@GraceNote Seriously though, asking me whether I want to close a question is like asking GLaDOS if she wants to test.

@Arda I don't actually look at who is visibly in the room when I enter, as it turns out.

4:04 PM
@GraceNote Just saying. Don't trust my judgement. Ever.

@GraceNote I wish we did have somebody who had this issue amongst us, so that we could ask that question properly

Q: How to get sugar cane?

DrakeI played several hours a started three different worlds in Minecraft, but I have never found any sugar canes. I read on Minecraft wiki to search near water but still no luck. Do you have more hints? Is it possible to re-create an environment that allow sugar canes to naturally grow?

@GraceNote Class-based First Person Shooter (like Team Fortress 2) genre.

Thanks, @Powerlord.

5:14 PM
Personally, I think we need a First Person game.
I'm not just saying that because I'm bored.

I agree. I'm sick of

I'm content with myself.

Q: What is the best way for me to back up and restore my Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance game saves?

Orion751I would prefer to work with my GBA and Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, but I've also got a GBC and a Windows XP machine hanging around.

5:25 PM
Are we ever going to get ?
Hmm, found dueling pistols.

@ArdaXi Want more? I have like 4x that I'm not using.
I'm kicking myself, because someone was offering a random hat for 4xDueling Pistols yesterday, and someone beat me to it. :(

@Powerlord Well, I doubt if I'm going to use these either.

If you thought Minecraft's interface to 3D modeling was trivial, you might change idea when you see other approaches like ro.me/tool

I once saw a modeling tool (actual modeling tool) that used a similar structure.
Except, when you were done, you could smooth it.

well, it'd be out of theme in that context.
still it's a pita to use.

5:53 PM
@badp Regular modeling software is worse.

Anyway, I have a new goal for one of my TF2 plugins
Add in the ability to read multiple configuration files rather than require all sound sets to be defined in one file.

Q: How long does it take for an expansion to become an advantage?

tenfourWhen you expand, you sacrifice the "strength of your army" (i.e. tech + army units) for a while. What is this duration? To illustrate what I mean, here's a makeshift graph of 1-base production versus a 1-base into expansion production: My question is: How long is that green line? How can you m...

That reminds me, one of my friends is trying to convince her husband to buy her StarCraft 2.
and then she's going to try to guilt trip me into playing it as well.

user30
hoho.

6:00 PM
@ThomasMcDonald I don't know WHAT you're talking about. ;)
Pay no attention to the edit behind the curtain.

user30
Right, wrt/equations w/more than one root.

user30
Is it correct to say that the roots are "x and y", or should it be "x or y".

user30
x and y make sense to me, but the semantics have been nagging away at me for a while

Ah. I love the starred list. Such beautiful names in there.
Well, name, predominantly.

Hi everyone.

In other news, I think this would win some sort of award for slowest rails stack setup.

HOI 2 complete, or HOI 3?
They're both on sale on Steam
(So are all the HOI 3 XPs, but I'm not willing to spend that much atm)

user30
wth is universe sandbox?

@Macha Um... what's HOI?

user30
Looks surprisingly entertaining

Hearts of Iron
It reminds me of the early part of Science of Discworld actually :P
I'll probably buy it in the inevitable sale :P

user30
6:21 PM
Okay, universe sandbox looks purchasable.

Wow... that code change seemed ridiculously easy. If I got it right, that is.
I'll have to test it later.

@ThomasMcDonald It's not exactly a game.

user30
@ArdaXi Yeah but it's loads of pretty swirly lines

@ThomasMcDonald Fair enough.

Oh and if this compiler didn't spit out spurious errors about missing include files because it's too stupid to copy those with the other files.

6:29 PM
@ThomasMcDonald Grammatically, "The roots are x and y" is correct. "The solution is x or y," however.

user30
@MatthewRead hrmph

user30
sounds pretty much like what I was thinking.

Yep. Basically you just need to distinguish between what solves it (one number at a time: or) and what can solve it (two numbers: and)

Bleah, I have this updated and compiled, but I can't test it until later tonight. :/

Hm, no wonder my hard drive is so full. I just realised I have every game in my Steam account installed.
Wait, when did I buy Darwinia?

6:37 PM
Probably with Uplink when all Introversion game's were in a pack for €5

Hmm, yeah. DEFCON too.
Hmm, I should look at what kind of mess Hi-Rez made off Global Agenda.

Ow, ow, ow. Berlusconi mustn't be happy right now.

Why?

Even in Naples, where the current left-wing administration is responsible for the epic failure in management of waste you might have heard about (waste remained on the street even during the election period), the right-wing candidate isn't going to get 50% of votes.

Q: Movement and digging/mining speed

Williham TotlandI have noticed that when falling/climbing on ladders/submerged in water/swimming while mining/digging/chopping wood the speed at which blocks are destroyed is greatly reduced. What kinds of movement specifically cause this slowdown, and to what degree?

user30
there is something incredibly wrong with that statement

@ThomasMcDonald It envelops the Vatican.

user30
@ArdaXi I am aware.

@ThomasMcDonald Means the nations have to relieve them from duty first.

user30
6:47 PM
@ArdaXi Or rather, the IMF has to remove his immunity.

user30
Zerigo DNS is awesome

@ThomasMcDonald Not necessarily.

user30
How so?

@ThomasMcDonald The nation-states have some kind of veto, don't they?

user30
> Formally, the decision to waive Mr Strauss-Kahn's immunity rests with the IMF itself

user30
6:49 PM
So I guess, yes, it is the role of the nation states (that make up the IMF(?) not familiar with it's hierarchy), as a whole.

Q: What is the quickest excavation method?

Williham TotlandI have a tendency to take on huge digging projects. Not mining projects; digging projects. For surface digs, these are usually there to add flair to the map; such as a 20m x 20m sinkhole completely finished with stone, and with access minecart tracks to subterranean mines and such; and sometimes...

> This question reminds me of a time when me and a couple friends decided to play Minecraft together and I was put in charge. Actually, they played Minecraft, I played a new version of Dwarf Fortress where the dwarves were my friends... it was awesome. - tzenes
I have to try this sometime. Now to find friends.
@ThomasMcDonald Not sure I like the idea of paying a premium for something that is trivial to implement yourself.

user30
@ArdaXi mhm?

@ThomasMcDonald Well, Zerigo seems expensive.

user30
@ArdaXi Nah man, I'm on the free plan

user30
plus the last time I touched BIND it went horribly wrong

@ThomasMcDonald So what does it offer over 'I Can't Believe It's Not BIND'?

user30
7:13 PM
@ArdaXi looks shit hot?

Okay. As for the cons: limited to 50 000 queries a month.

user30
Which is plenty enough for most?

I'm close to that limit already.

user30
I'd rather pay $20/year than have to piddle around with BIND again, anyway.

@ThomasMcDonald I prefer paying just my domain registrar $10 a year and have them handle it.

7:15 PM
Aren't there other free DNS services?

@Powerlord Plenty.

This was a triumph, I'm a making a note here, huge success...

user30
@ArdaXi MediaTemple's DNS has a habit of going down

@Moshe It's hard to overstate how terribly late you are.

@ArdaXi Yea, I know, I know.

7:16 PM
@ThomasMcDonald Gandi works perfectly for me.

@Moshe Well here we are again. It's always such a pleasure...

@Powerlord Ninja'd.

user30
I'd rather use a service that specialises in DNS hosting

@Powerlord Am I a nuisance? I apologize.

@ThomasMcDonald Why?
@Moshe That's the Portal 2 song.

user30
7:17 PM

@ArdaXi Is it?

@Moshe The first two lines of, yes.

Oh, ok.
My mistake.

@Powerlord There is more?!

Well, is Portal 2 any longer than Portal?

7:18 PM
(That was my reaction when I heard Portal 1 had a theme song, embarrasingly)
@Moshe Roughly 3 times as long, if you count co-op.

user30
Just like I could use git on MT, I don't, because Github is better.

@ArdaXi Singleplayer is shorter?

@Moshe No, but the two add up to about 12 hours of gameplay.

Portal was worth $10, but I don't think the new one is worth the current price, for me, a nongamer.

user30
@Moshe It is.

7:19 PM
Well, I'll think about it.

@Moshe Well, I think it is.
I can't exactly think like a non-gamer though.

@ArdaXi Haha.

@Moshe If you're a non-gamer, what are you doing here on The Bridge?
GUARDS! Take this man-cat thing to the brig!

@Powerlord I thought this was the brig?

user30
Oh, I forgot how good Capistrano was

7:21 PM
Oh wait, you don't use that avatar any more.

@Powerlord Well, good point. I'll put it like this: I enjoy gaming, but I'm not great with most modern gaming systems and I am usually to busy to play videogames.

@ArdaXi No, this is the bridge. You need to drop him down two letters to reach the brig.
2

I was alright with Nintendo 64 though.
The thing about Portal is that it's full of great one-liners.

Fine, I changed it back since someone starred it before I edited it. :)

@Powerlord Is there a non-semantical difference between the bridge and the brig?

7:22 PM
@ArdaXi Brig is a type of prison on board a ship.

1+1 is 10 ... ... in base 4 I'm fine!

@Moshe Oh Portal 2 has those.
"How are you holding up? Because I'm a potato."

@ArdaXi ? Didn't get that.

I thought it was "1+1 is f..f...f...f...f... 10! ...in base 4, I'm fine!"

@Powerlord Could be.
But there's no comma, it's in one breath.

7:23 PM
@Moshe You would if you played Portal 2.

@ArdaXi Right, what does it go for these days?
opens steam

€50

For the record, if Valve people ever look here (or anyone who can make game marketing/sales decisions), demos are a useful sales tool. I used Portal: First Slice to check if it would run on my MacBook - which it did.

@Moshe If Portal runs on your PC, Portal 2 will too.
If you want to check, you can get Alien Swarm. It's the same engine.

@ArdaXi Alien Swarm doesn't have a Mac version, I don't think.
I could be wrong, though.

7:26 PM
@Powerlord Doesn't seem to, no.
Well, go by Portal then.

user30

Q: Should I ask question which only I might be able to answer?

AubergineLet us say I have been playing a really old and obscure game and I've been looking all over the internet for an answer to a specific question about that game. Eventually, through much trial and error, I managed to figure out the answer by myself. Wanting to make the internet a better place, I co...

I've decided I'm going to learn the guitar.

I've decided I'm going to go home early.
Actually, I'm doing that because I have to go feed my parents dog and let her out since they're on holiday.
(I phrased it that way to make you think I'm British)

user30
...

@ThomasMcDonald What, is that confusing?
People in the US don't say "on holiday," we say "on vacation."

user30
I fail to see how that classifies you are British

user30
Well, you say it wrong

user30
7:50 PM
In which case, I fail to see how saying "holiday" correctly classifies you as British English.

Q: Can creatures move diagonally through walls?

Stuart PeggI've told my dwarves to build a protective rock 'sheath' around my column of up/down stairs (thrust to the floor of a cavern) in the following pattern: OOOO RXXO RXXO OROO O = Wall build order R = Rock X = Stairs But they've decided (in their wisdom) to leave the parts above cavern-ground-lev...

Q: How to use my MIDI drums in Guitar Hero World Tour for PC?

lorI've got my electronic Fame MIDI drum connected to my PC. It supports MIDI. Now I want to use this in GHWT. GHWT does not seem to recognise my drum controller. I downloaded the drum tuning kit, and it recognise the drums and is able to send a test signal. But no luck with the actual tuning becau...

@ThomasMcDonald In the US, a holiday is one day. In the UK etc, a holiday is any kind of leave, usually multiple days.

user30
