XantecThe title says it all. It is mentioned several times that there are 7000 steps on the path to High Hrothgar. Are there actually 7000 steps or are the NPCs exaggerating?

@GraceNote, hope I'm not upsetting you or causing any friction. I almost feel like I'm studying something with a sensei or guru when I'm talking to you there, and I hope it shows...

The hilarity of this whole tag debacle is that Stack Overflow still has [homework].

@GraceNote that is sad :)

@agent86 You have a lot to learn if you think that a meta discussion will make me upset. ♪

@GraceNote I figure it won't; I'm being humble to stay on the safe side :)
I'm new; I was taught to respect my elders.

10:34 PM
I'm happy to help explain things - that's why I wanted to focus not on things that even I am still undecided on, but rather on the important crux of tagging - what I'd say represent the best practices.

@GraceNote You can always take a look at Math.SE, they love their meta tags

@Fabian I've tried. I'm happy enough I got them to un-CW a question that I felt was wrongly converted.

Well, entering Math.SE as an SE employee is probably the opposite of fun

@GraceNote Thank you. I appreciate that and the time you've taken. I hope that this has the desired outcome of education and illumination of an... interesting growing pain the site is experiencing.

10:36 PM
@Fabian There was a reason I never had an account at Math prior to employment, after all.

We're really holding onto that Skyrim traffic

The part about sub tags as being either scoped only to specific games versus being broader, it is something that sits ill with me in both directions. On the one hand, I think that a scenario that encourages something that's like having [c#-strings] and [c++-strings] utterly disgusts me. On the other hand, the vast majority of meaningful subdivisions will actually be unique to the game

@GraceNote I just wonder if there isn't a better solution than tags. I'm a lateral thinker that way though. I don't have anything meaningful to contribute solution-wise, but these kinds of problems just stick in my brain until I've worked them out, so someday perhaps I shall

@agent86 If we had something other than tags, we could allow people to filter games by platform/genre

really though, I always dig myself in too deep. I should just stick to beating the ever loving crap out of people with dong bats instead.

10:39 PM
@GraceNote I think we have to dissasociate ourselves a bit from the usual idea of what a tag should be. We just don't fit the standard SE model. Our subtags will be meaningless anyway without their game tag, so the fact that by themselves they might be bad or useless tags is not really bad, as long as they make sense in combination with a game tag.

okay, I've got to eat now, I'll be back to stir up more later.
you've been WARNED.

Er, can someone else take a look at the Suggested Edit that's currently pending and the reason the user stated?

@Fabian I think that's a different problem, and one that I likewise don't think is a problem
Mine was more about the fact that in a general sense, what actually is a meaningful subdivision to a game's question base... tends to be unique to that game.

@GraceNote ...*grumbles something about pots and kettles*

@GraceNote Yes, I fully agree with that one

10:41 PM
Minecraft has mobs, it has crafting, it has equipment and enchanting. None of this really is truly important to gamers to distinguish all that often - it's all just a certain part of the game.

We're pretty much changing the topic of the site every time a big game comes out, there's no tagging concept that is valid for all games.

Jeff is already grudgingly annoyed with [homework]. I think looking at Stack Overflow's [api] is far more fruitful. Just to point out sub tags.

@GraceNote I really dislike tags like [homework]

Oh, I won't get started on how bad [homework] is.
Mostly because today is Thanksgiving, so I really shouldn't be here, but I saw the Meta question and I had to reply.

I miss celebrating thanksgiving :(

FabianI'm not sure about the reasons for this change, I'm not seeing any big advantage either way. @Fabian I think all your points are very solid, for what it's worth. I'm uh, not a mathematician though.

@RonanForman Yep

@RonanForman oh shit, I forgot about that :/

@David What other questions are there?

@Fabian "sites most of which prefer the site remain in a relatively small scale"
"Oh noes, what if some pesky user finds our site and (oh the horror!) posts something!"

I believe my group and I are meeting up to work on our project saturday

it lets the answers know that a complete answer has less value than a pointer to the missing clue

Do you think we could just push this back until around december 7th? MY classes are finished then, it would be much easier for me.
I mean we've waited so long already
you guys are welcome to play without me though, I don't mind

@Wipqozn There was this other incident, with a high-rep user posting multiple comments because he wanted to insert linebreaks with enter. He did that consistently and Jeff mailed him about that.

11:03 PM
@Wipqozn At the sane time?

@Fabian yeah, that's what I'm thinking about.

@Fabian Ooooh I remember that

That was on MAth, correct?
@RonanForman Honestly, once my classes are done, I'm pretty much free anytime.

I'm not a mathematician, but at least the Math.SE meta is somewhat entertaining

@Fabian That was terrible.

11:05 PM
I do have exams, but I can definitely make time easily enough.
Actually my first exam is on the 10th, a saturday, so that won't work
The sunday would work though, the 11th

The site made me be a bit wary of the academic sites, let's see how Biology turns out

my last exam is on the 14th, so we could just wait another week and I'll be completely done
@badp I agree 100%
Also, why are we not allowed to have line breaks in comments? IT makes long comments a real pain in the ass to read.
IF you don't want comments to be that long, then you should reduce the character limit. You don't blame it on the user when your site has a flaw in it's design.

@Wipqozn If you limit comments to 300 characters, you'll just put two 300 character comments instead of one.
Just like right now we post 1,200 character long comments in two separate 600 character comments.

there are two experts on , and here they are: stackoverflow.com/badges/756/api

@Wipqozn I'm okay with any weekend time, you'll have to ask the others.

11:09 PM
So no, reducing comment length doesn't help you get shorter comments - nerfing their presentation does. And it starts with formatting.
I think making comments slightly painful to use is a conscious design decision here.

</silly>

If we're waiting this long I could re-edit the videos to have the new splash screen and stuff.

comments would be better if they commented on the thing they are attached too. I've seen so many comments about the question on my answer, and comments about the comments about the comments too.

@badp I see your point, but this is still a situation of placing blame on the user. It's obvious that users are using comments outside the scope of what the site originally intended. You don't then make it a pain in the ass and say "you're using comments wrong", you look into redesigning your site to either embrace that change, or to encourage users to use meta or chat for such things. SImply pissing off your users isn't the correct solution.

@Wipqozn Pissing off? I'm not pissed off at all when I can skim over five screenful of comment discussions

11:12 PM
yes, chat should be easier to get into. I've used stackoverflow since the beginning and only in the last month got into chat

Comments are minor. Allowing linebreaks would break this fact.

@badp I'm not saying we are pissed off, but that's what they are trying to do. What else would you be trying to do if you try to make something a pain for your users?

What is your solution? Removing comments altogether?
If you have a solution post it on meta.stackoverflow.com

@badp Replace the entire site with a picture of an 8bit heart. Make it occasionally flash and wvetone will be happy!

@Wipqozn Limit users to three comments per post. Except that'd be easy to cheat through deletion.
Here, have a solution that is even half-implemented through invites to bring discussion to chat
Go ahead, make your day

11:15 PM
nifty. How about "propose edits" instead of comment. that way the answerer only can address the concern instead of the public at large.

@DavidB For low rep users, "edit" is replaced by "improve this answer"
and there's no "add comment" button

@badp Something similar to the chat prompt would be on idea. If someone makes a few comments or a lengthy one, then a prompt inviting the user to start a meta discussion would be one thing.

ah, that's nice - encourage more people to edit

Also, could one of the mods take a look at the currently pending Suggested Edit and its reason? I'm... not sure what to do about that.

I've had bad comment experiences, but no bad edit experiences. There's something about being part of the answer instead of a critic that tempers the response.

11:18 PM
@FallenAngelEyes were you talking about the insulting thing? I just approved it, what was the problem?
It wasn't insulting at all.
oh, wait
I just approved it, meant to reject
@FallenAngelEyes but yeah, did you mean this?

@Wipqozn I was mostly confused on what the user found insulting and why. I'm also unsure why the link is there.

@FallenAngelEyes Approved - the video has nothing to do with the post.

Okay, I just rolled it back again. I didn't look at the link, I just assumed it wasn't some random link.
I'll need to be more careful with that.
Now I'm confused why he would have even included that link in the first place, it doesn't make any sense.

@Wipqozn hence my overall confusion

Although @agent86 is in chat, I'm sure he could tell us.
@agent86: What does this have to do with your answer?

A: Are there Tools which help to develop aiming capabilities?

agent86Since Team Fortress 2 is free to play, and it comes with a training mode (including bots!), it might work for your situation. You'd not only be testing your DPI settings, but you'd be practicing in a real game situation.

was wondering how it was
Risen 2 apparently looks like, as my friend described it, "pirates+magic" so I'm curious now

Also, just pointing out we may need to revisit this.

Q: Are pronunciation questions out of scope?

Nick TI asked a question, How do you pronounce Skyrim? a while back and it was downvoted to all hell then closed many days later. I'm not entirely sure why it's a bad question, as it is gaming related, and it does seem to be reasonably popular (though not near some other Skyrim questions) and #1 on go...

I know the skyrim question was re-opened, but this question sparked it again and is drawing a lot of negative feed back (-4 score atm)

splattered bitsI just met Fi in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. How is her name pronounced? Fee (like easy)? Feye (like ice)? Fii (like igloo)? Or Matt (like at)?

@Wipqozn Given that there is a concrete answer for that one given the Japanese pronunciation, and it lacks any pronunciation in promotional materials, I answered it for those reasons.

@FallenAngelEyes I'm not commenting on way or the other on it, I'm not sure where I stand on it, just saying it seems we need to revisit that discussion.
