So @ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 and anyone else: Any tips on how to get my hands on a service manual for my truck for cheap? Buying them right off is quite steep for an old book.

Service manual?

yes

What exact info are you looking for?

something like that I suppose
In my owners manual it has a thing I can send in to buy one but it is also expensive (dunno if that's the same thing anyway)
haha

@J.Musser what year truck is it?
'99?

3:25 AM
98?

99
but those are all about the same
before the third gen
mines a quad cab 4x4 but that should be covered

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Not sure that's the entire text though
I wonder why they cost. Just a lil book lol. Whatebs

> However, there are times when you need the detail of the Dodge Factory Service Manual (yes, the same one you can order out of the back of your Owner's Manual). The factory manual is the authoritative source for specifications, reuse, wiring, and diagnostics. Every Dodge Turbo Diesel owner who does their own maintenance should have the factory manual.

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 hmm

3:32 AM
That should be the complete manual.

The book one, not the digital

The book one is $115

it's saying the digital one is like a condensed form

the digital only $35
Maybe ...

Thats what it says
it says the digital one is like notes on the manual, so there are times you need the manual.
hahaha

3:34 AM
Did you read the second paragraph?

yes

which is what I posted ... same thing for both of them. These are the full version.

ah
right
xD
If I get the book I wanna put it up for free download xD xD xD

Can't be that harmful to get it into more owners hands

3:37 AM
Well, as long as nobody knows it wa syou who put it out there.

Lol I wouldnt care
They cant catch me
If they try Ill jump in my dodge and try to make it go

Sounds like you have it covered.

A: Replace car batteries with capacitors?

AutisticYes its possible to start a car with Ultra capacitors. These caps dont appear to have a cycle life like the traditional lead acid battery does .The ability of these caps to provide starting current is very good .There are a couple of snags :The caps at present are more pricey than the best lead ac...

I don't know that I'm happy with this answer ... when I was watching the guy's video, I did a lot of research on capacitors. It seems the lowest duty cycle these have is 1,000,000 ... I've seen some caps which advertise up to 10,000,000 cycles. Either one if far in excess of what a lead acid battery has.

1:03 PM
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 but the reason why it isn't useful is explained well in his answer
Super-capacitors are great for delivering a certain amount of voltage, but they don't hold a lot of charge
So you can use it to start up a vehicle, but it wont power your vehicle's electrical for long
So what's holding it back from being used is the ability to store large amounts of charge.

@Zaid - that was only part of the question.

Which part of the question aggrieves you?

The longevity factor bothers me (what he said). The Maxwell supercaps have a 1M duty cycle. If you used your caps to restart your vehicle 20/day, they'd still last for 136+ years.
He also doesn't answer how does a capacitor work.

Oh, that's the easy part

While that's not a normal question for MVM&R, it is good to know how they work for stereo equipment and such.
Mainly it's just not a complete answer, and parts of the answer are not entirely accurate.

1:11 PM
Basically, two plates that are close to but not touching each other. One side gets positively charged, one side gets negatively charged

I don't want to downvote it, but I'm affraid anything I say to make it better will just come off sounding mean.

The buildup of charge equates to voltage

How many Farad might be in a lightning bolt?

Not sure
No idea
No part of that answer struck me as inaccurate

Longevity is wrong.
Pure and simple.
A lead acid battery will last somewhere around 5 years with acid in the cells, whether it's being used or not.

1:15 PM
He's referring to longevity of charge, not the life of the battery

No, he's not.

That's why he talks about power density vs energy density

> These caps dont appear to have a cycle life like the traditional lead acid battery does.

I accept that he needs to qualify his second sentence about cycle life

He does say: Its like comparing strength to endurance ... which is a very good comparison.

1:17 PM
But that could go both ways, short or longer

I guess what I'm saying is, I think I'm going to give it some burn time and see what others might come up with.
How are you this fine day? You said you have to work today?

I always have work today

ROFL. Okay :D

Day is good. Trying to figure out what's the best way to convince my peers of my radical approach to code overhaul

Do you have normal "weekends" then? Two days off in conjunction? If so, which days?

1:19 PM
Yes, Friday and Saturday

Okay, I didn't know if it was different in Qatar than it is in Saudi.

The region shifted to Fri/Sat a while back

@Zaid What exactly is your overhaul involving?

It used to be Thu/Fri about 15 years ago

@Zaid - That, actually, is probably what I'm remembering.

1:21 PM
Take legacy code and migrate it

It's been a long time since I've been in the region and then when I was, everything is blurred together.

I was hoping to do a Gorbachev on the code while we're at it

?? Gorbachev ?? Not familiar with that term in relation to coding.

Perestroika

1:23 PM
So yeah, the writing's on the wall as far as my suggestion is concerned
Even though it will save us a tremendous amount of time and effort in the long run

Reform the code. You want to migrate it from what going to what? I take it you're looking to have the code ported to some other type, with the new code being easier to maintain.
Which will involve a lot of work up front.

Yes... We need to yank it out of the existing environment and find a new home

So more of a machine thing? Not necessarily a problem with the code itself?

The primary concern is behavioral consistency between the new and the old

Get it all on the same footing.

1:26 PM
Not really machine... Just that the environment is changing
Anyway

Okay. Actually, I don't have much to give you. Was hoping by you describing I might be able to give you something ... or by asking you these things, you might come up with some other way.
As in some other way for you to convince your cohorts.

Thanks for the moral support ;)

Ducati would be all over your dilemma! :D
He's good at convincing people. I'm working on it.

Yes he would now, wouldn't he? :)

Q: Loss of engine power when using headlights

Miloi have a nissan march 2003 (K12). when i turn on the headlights, it loose its engine power. alternator and battery are ok. anybody knows what would be the cause? thank you in advance.

I know one thing: You need plenty of comments in your code. That's it.

1:29 PM
Any ideas here?

Not a clue. Not enough to go on.

Alternator and battery are OK... I have to question that claim

Doesn't give codes (if any). Says it's not the alt or bat, yet doesn't give how they know it's not that (what testing was involved).

Exactly
It's almost like there isn't enough voltage supplied to the injectors
Or if it's DBW the throttle plate

Robert has a fairly decent answer ... goes back to my thinking the IAC is always at fault :D

1:31 PM
Confirmation bias :P

If it is DBW, it would probably not have an IAC
I'm hungry.

Let me guess, Jelly beans and Mountain Dew?

Nope! Breadstick at the present.
I'll down a couple of Diet Dews a little later.
:D

Doh! I was so sure I'd nailed it!
:D

1:33 PM
Well I'll leave you to it then

Oh, no! I'm sitting here with my breadstick ... that is, unless you need to go back to work :D
I have no issues pulling you from your assigned tasks, lol.
I have a cat named Milo.

3 hours later…
5:00 PM
@RoryAlsop - Halo!

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Good afternoon

What are you up to today?
running over old women with your race driver spirit?

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Driving my wife's Honda Jazz today -the replacement windscreen for mine wasn't installed correctly, so I'm getting it fixed :-(
going from 400bhp to 82bhp is no fun

Haha! Now that I can understand, lol!

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 although, the heavy rain recently has left massive water splashes everywhere, so that's fun. I know it's not recommended practice, but the Jazz gets very squirrely hitting a 9" deep ford at 50mph :-)

5:05 PM
ROFLMBO! I can see you scrolling through the water at mach speeds, hydroplaning the little Jazz!

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 it is a weird little car in conditions like that. Lovely and easy in town, but get it on the edge and it's very unpredictable. The electric steering hammers at you, and grip drops to zero.
Luckily some wide and very empty roads near me for playing on

Well, I know you are an experienced driver, but it only takes once to get into something you cannot recover from ... be careful ... I want to come visit one day and if you are in a body cast, that wouldn't be fun!
;-)

2 hours later…
7:29 PM
@Zaid - Do you like this?
Actually, this is the one we'd have to go with as it has a 1px border which is required.

7:49 PM
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Me like

I'm glad you like ... I posted it over on Cooking.SE and they said, "While there's no rule against it, if it doesn't align with cooking somehow, it is discouraged ..." yada, yada, yada.

ROFL
Tell 'em they can fry a Michelin five-star omelette on the hood of your truck :D

I said, "You need a good mechanic like you need a good cook."
@Zaid - Are there any other sites on SE which might align somehow with ours?
I'm not thinking of any, except maybe DIY.SE

^ Couldn't let this one go after my last remark :D
Engineering.SE

ROFL! Cooking up some tire recipes!

7:56 PM
DIY.SE

I'll check and see if either one has the ad post in Meta

Uh, no

LOOOOL
You should post that up
on cooking.SE
Let's see if they get the joke :D
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 please post it up
If you don't, I will, LOL

8:12 PM
There are two things it needs. It isn't the "right" size of 250hx300w pixels, then with the white background it has to have 1px of black border. If you have a larger (or can make a larger) image with a bit more border around it, I can make it happen like they want it ... if we are going to do it, let's do it good :D
I had to cut the hat off a bit in order to get it close to the right size.

Wait, let me see if I can get a better picture

I'd like it to actually fit in the image because the hat is what makes it!
I love it though, lol!

It's 295 x 300 at the moment
The requirement is 300 x 250

Not after I chopped it.

Just scale it down Paul

8:16 PM
You cannot just "scale it down" it has to be the right size. If I adjust the image, it will screw up the effect by squashing the Michelin man.
Anyway, let me see what I can do with it.

Of course, I meant that you should maintain the aspect ratio

Can you put the hat on that one? Or was the hat already on the other one?

It was already on the other one
Just scale it down to 246 x 250

scratch that ... we'd have the same issue as this one would be too tall.
It has to be 300x250, though
I just don't want them to say, "It's not the right size" and reject it outright.
I'm working it.

8:34 PM
It's better without the hat then

I just need to make the hat lighter.
It sticks out like a sore thumb ... pun intended

There's some kind of watermark in the image
Towards the top of the hat

It doesn't come through with what I'm working with ... let me kill the background.
It sucks not having photoshop, lol.
But it needs a border ... one second

That's fine. Just make the text stand out a little more

Now you tell me, lol

8:42 PM
Sorry, lol

You realize the answer to your question is "no" don't you?

This is what sparked the question
no pun intended
The author claims that you have to have at least two occasions where consecutive cylinders on the same bank fire with a cross-plane crankshaft

If you've heard of a 4/7 swap, you'll know you can adjust the firing order without affecting how the crank is made.

Haven't heard of it
My question isn't about changing firing order
It's about whether knowing that a good, working firing order is enough to qualify a crankshaft as cross-plane or flat-plane

I guess that theory can say "I guess it can be predicted"
According to this guy's theory, anyway. I'm not sure if the theory is accurate though.
I haven't thought about it enough to really know.

8:54 PM
hence the question

Looks fine
I just hope they can make the connection ;)

I'll replace the one over on Cooking and see if they like it better ...

You might want to visit their chat and see they can stomach it :)

and to make sure I understand what you are getting at ... are you looking at the crossover between the Michelin Man and the Pillsbury Doughboy?

8:56 PM
No

@Zaid I'm actually not too worried about it.

Media always harps on about Restaurant X being a Michelin 4-star, another being Michelin 5-star
etc. etc.

OH! I'm up to date now! I should actually put some stars in the image then!

It looks like the same Michelin man is used
Your supercap answer has an update
You and he be aligned
And I need to go now

No worries. Have a great evening.

9:00 PM
you too
Ciao

9:21 PM
@Zaid - Maybe that would clue them in?
@Zaid - Except for the color, those are the Michelin Stars down in the bottom right. :D
