This Scotty Kilmer guy on YouTube.. sheesh lol

4 hours later…
5:52 AM
@Paulster2 : It's not common to see a carb'd motor. That's what made it worth sharing
Thought I am aware of your dislike for Musto

3 hours later…
8:45 AM
So I've just ordered a new window motor, following my question on the main site. For some reason it was 25% cheaper to buy it from the US (via RockAuto's UK site) than from a UK seller, even after adding tax and shipping...

Dan
9:14 AM
By tax do you mean the UK import tax? If you mean the tax you have to pay on the product in the US, then you will end up paying more after you have paid the UK import tax.

1 hour later…
10:27 AM
UK VAT. There was no US tax, as it's being sold through a UK subsidiary. I'm hoping there won't be extra import tax (or that they would have added it in the quoted price)...

Dan
10:37 AM
@NickC And that could well be the case OR they might not have included it, in which case about 2 months later a letter might be posted to you by HMRC saying you need to pay tax on that. Hopefully not though!

indeed... Hopefully not!
@Dan - according to the HMRC website, it's under the threshold, so it is just the VAT that's due

Dan
Ah thats good! VAT is so annoying though :( 20%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep! Can't be avoided though (which at least makes it fairer than most taxes...)

Dan
10:58 AM
True true. I wish it could just be abolished though. Its just so annoying. Have to pay tax on product/service with money that you earn and pay taxes on... so its like a double tax. Ohw ell.

11:27 AM
@Zaid - I dislike the Mustang fan boys more than I dislike Mustangs. In fact I'm really digging the styling on the 2015 Mustangs. Something about the front end on them is just ... awesome. The Coyote engine is pretty awesome, though it's still only 302ci. The 2016 Gen 6 Camaro should have it beat though. 455hp ... noice.

Dan
@Paulster2 So long as they are V8s! :)

Oh, I like my v8's! My son and I are talking about a build right now. He cannot make up his mind. It's going to be his money, so ...

Dan
Haha awesome! A nice V8 with quad band exhausts and a lovely growl!!! Perfection.

He wants a sleeper, so I told him, "We must have a quiet exhaust ... then put dumps on it." :D

@Paulster2 : Awesome to hear that your son's thinking of a sleeper build!
I found an amazing article regarding my brushless motor question - toolguyd.com/power-tool-brushless-motors
(While the folks over at EE.SE go sort out their identity crisis)
@Paulster2 : You ought to share with him this thread of what I reckon is the ultimate sleeper build
Gimme a moment

11:47 AM
I've looked at that link before ... too bad the pictures don't show up.
(At least they don't for me)
@Zaid - We already have a car body ... 86 Camaro IROC-Z. I was doing a "fix-n-flip" on it, but he decided he wanted it. He's just now moving from Alaska down to North Carolina (we are very excited!). We have to figure out how he's going to get the car, but he's going to be a lot closer (4 hours v. 40+ hours).
I'll probably have to rent a car trailer and take it down to him.
@DavidXu - If you get to The Pitstop, I'd love to talk to you. Maybe help you a little so your answers will make more sense to others, and therefor be have a better reception. We love having new people here, but I don't like seeing them beat up. If I can help you with your answers, I definitely will! Hope you make it here :D Just place an "@" before my username when you answer and I'll get the message.

1 hour later…
1:15 PM
@Paulster2 : I don't think he'll see it if he isn't in the room

@Zaid - I left him a message on one of his posts to come over to the dark side.
I think his heart is in the right place, but his answering tendencies need some work.
Like someone who is not familiar with how SE works.
@Zaid - Do you know if the V8 BMW's run a flat plane crankshaft?

1:40 PM
@Zaid - I'll take it they don't run a FPC in the V8, but boy are these guys on this BMW forum clueless. Absolutely just talking out their butt for the most part ... it's why I love the SE model: Tell it like it is with references to back you up and you're golden.

A: A/C does not cool when speeding more than 100kmph

ZaidSeems like the high-side pressure is too high The refrigerant needs to be operating at the right pressures in order for the air-con to function properly: If the pressure is too low, there is risk of compressor damage in addition to lack of cooling If the pressure is too high, the effectiveness...

Whew! Finally done with this answer. Time for a cuppa
@Paulster2 Hmm. Let's see if I can dig out a firing order for the S62
1 2 3 4
O O O O
<--front
O O O O
5 6 7 8

Firing order: 1 - 5 - 4 - 8 - 6 - 3 - 7 - 2

@Zaid - The sound of a FPC in an V8 is awesome. I have been enamored with them since I heard one in an LS1 motor (Corvette) ... youtube.com/watch?v=HIxngbwE8jg

It's a 90° V8. Interestingly, the exhaust headers are setup for a flatplane
I was wondering why the S62 doesn't sound burbly like the LS1. Look like the exhaust headers are to blame

2:29 PM
Lol, what's up?

Just me being stupid. I'm off to the movies ... we are going to watch MI:Rogue Nation ... busy this evening, so having to go this morning, lol.
I'll be back onlater.

Sure thing, see you in a bit. It will be a nice addition the site: Is it possible to determine if a crank is cross-plane or flat-plane based on cylinder firing order alone?

GM has gone through four (I believe) firing orders from Gen I SBC until now. It also would matter how the cylinders are numbered. GM numbers differently than the BMW you have posted above.

Sure, that variation's a given
On the LS1 all the odd cylinders are on one side, even on the other

^That lamp is epic

2:54 PM
I can chat from work again, nice

Hi Larry
@Paulster2 : Looks like eBay is the fastest way to confirm if a crank is flatplane or crossplane :)
This is the S85 V10
The S65. Most definitely a cross-plane

3:23 PM
@Zaid Wondering how I am going to manage to drill a hole all they way through the middle of the camshaft to run the cord, but I am building that!

4:08 PM
@Movemorecommentslinktotop I've got a couple of camshafts kicking around as well :)

@Zaid Going to talk to my machinist buddy and see if he has anything to drill through the middle

What I'm wondering is how to prevent the thing from rusting over time while maintaining the bare-metal finish
My cams already have heavy rust on them

I have several in my garage without any rust...

Oh, just occurred to me. Some cams are already hollow

Maybe those still have a coat of oil on them

4:14 PM
S62 cams are hollow

5:09 PM
@Paulster2 Well here's something you don't see everyday :p

5:53 PM
Lol!

6:23 PM
@Movemorecommentslinktotop - You are right. I was just trying to get it closed with the OP's own fix.
@Movemorecommentslinktotop - Your best bet to keeping the rust off is to get it hot tanked, washed up, then completely coat it with about 3-4 coats of clear coat paint finish. Another thought, which I would think is uber cool would be to have it chromed.

@Paulster2 : My cams need the treatment, not Larry's
I'm not sure if I can get it hot tanked here, elbow grease would be the way to go I think. Chroming would be cool

6:40 PM
@Zaid - Ha! Again, not keeping up with the conversation, lol. Yah, if you gave it to someone to be chromed, you wouldn't have to worry about it being rusty, dirty, or grimy. They'll take care of all that in part of the treatment to get it chromed. I think it would be awesome!
Never have to worry about rusting, either :D

As long as you're footing the bill, I'm in ;)
I actually have a scrap S62 in my backyard
It met a rather strange demise

I think you should look into it. I don't think chroming is as expensive as you think (or at least I hope it isn't, now that I made that statement :D).
And you'd never have to worry about how it looks again :D

Cylinder #8 has a big hole in its wall. The piston head is also missing
Just the con rod and pin remain
Apparently the guy was pootling along when calamity struck

A little bit of over rev? Or stuffing way too much NO2 down it's throat?

That's what's puzzling

6:52 PM
Either that or BMWs are as crappily built as I once thought? :P
(NOTE TO SELF: Check to ensure an S62 is a Bimmer engine ...)

:)
Would detonation cause the cylinder wall to burst like that?

This is what strikes me as funny: If BMWs are such great vehicles, why does everyone OOOO and AHHH over one which has an LSx stuffed into it?

I think it's more admiration of the guy who stuffed it in than what is stuffed in

@Zaid - I've heard of detonation destroying pistons (especially hypereutectic), but not the cylinder wall in the process. It could have been that the top of the piston separated and caused all of the damage, which sounds way more likely. More of an effect than a cause.

They're not as easy to mod/reverse-engineer
Anyway... It's a good idea to turn it into furniture
I need to gut the block first... Remove the crank and pistons
Folks normally think "coffee table". I think I'll turn it into a trolley

6:58 PM
You think there is anything salvageable?
Maybe the head on the one side.
I wonder how much damage (if any) the head on the broke side fared?
Do BMWs run hypereutectic pistons?

The heads look intact, though I haven't checked for warpage
Pistons are made of Alusil

Alusil (I believe) equates to "aluminum" and "silicon" ... which is the basis for all pistons. It's the percentage of silicon which makes them hypereutectic (lots of silicon) or hypoeutectic (less silicon).

Ah, I see. No clue really. Will have to consult the forum

Oh sure ... believe a bunch of Bimmerheads ...
I see how you are, lol!

What, you want me to invent info :D
What furniture could the heads turn into?

7:05 PM
The reason I was asking, though, is that hypereutectic pistons are more susceptible to detonation failure. They can stand up to a lot of abuse, are very stable dimensionaly, but you need to be careful of detonation. They also don't like a lot of nitrous thrown at them.

Hmmm

It depends on how flat the ends are on the heads.

Which ends? The top and bottom, front and back, or sides?

Too much detonation can destroy hyper-U pistons ... actually shatter them.
You are being too technical, cut that out.
;-)

You talking to yourself again :)

7:07 PM
I guess which end depends on how you lay them.
It would seem so.
haha
Obviously you are a figment of my imagination.
:D

Lol

So, if you had it laying flat on the table, with the combustion chambers down/cams up, looking straight at the exhaust ports, the ends which are on the left/right of the head at that point are the ends I'm talking about.

Those are pretty flat
If I remember well
They're outside in the dark right now
What is your idea?
I was thinking of using them as a food-serving tray
But it seems a waste
Paul, why are you editing the duplicate question?
Guess I spoke too soon

7:23 PM
Yes, I realized it was a duplicate after the fact. I have since voted to close.
I try to discover for myself if a question should be closed before I jump on any band wagons.
My recommendation to you is ... the S62 has an aesthetically ugly head. Throw it in the recycling bin.

Nooooo.....

I mean if it cannot otherwise be used.

It's about turning junk into art, I guess

The only way to make it pretty is to chrome it.
;-)

Back to the subject of the camshaft lamp, wouldn't it be cool if you had to turn the cam to activate the light switch?

7:32 PM
If you cannot afford to chrome your camshaft, something you might consider is to get it powder coated: chrome or black chrome ... both are awesome.

Yes, that is definitely a good idea

Turning the cam to turn it on would be awesome, but how would you impliment?
implement

You'd have to add some kind of base around which the camshaft end can pivot
That base would be the fixed part of the lamp which houses the switch
Lol, you can use something like a brake switch
And maybe a cam sprocket for the base
Keep it purely automotive that way
Hmmm

Haha! You could get really creative use a cam phaser (sp) on the end with the gear.
You just have to make sure you don't have current flow through the camshaft ;-)

You talking about the disc with slots cut into it?
Which the camshaft position sensor uses
Saved you the hassle

7:52 PM
You can get the camshaft gun-drilled at a shop that specializes
I'm a machinist by trade
Just not automotive

@Zaid - Yah, that's what I was talking about, but it's way to big and ugly. I like the style of cam gear which is in the picture ... flat, minimal, with holes in it.

8:05 PM
@Paulster2
quick question:
My dodge ram was squealing again, and I wanted to grease the pulley wheels. But the hood won't open.
The internal release works
but apparently the handle and cable under the hood have fallen off.
Anyway I wanna get under the hood, and I'm not sure where the cable went (actually iirc it was a rod)
ideas?

@J.Musser - The only way to access it if the cable is not working is to go from the bottom and see if you can access it. I haven't tried on the Dodge Ram to do just that ... quite a predicament if you ask me ... one I've often wondered how to fix since I tried unsuccessfully to help someone in quite the same situation.
By the bottom, I mean from behind the bumper. When you pull the release inside the cabin, what exactly happens?
Does the hood come up at all, as in the semi-released state (prior to unlatching the safety catch)?

@Paulster2 yeah, it does the regular thing

@J.Musser - BTW, I'd love to hear a video of what exactly it sounds like when it "squeals".
So, it pops up a little but you don't have the secondary latch under the grill which allows you to release the hood the rest of the way?

it's the external release (or whatever it's called) that is broken
completely missing

You could always drive the truck really fast and hope the wind catches it just right and flies up and smashes the windshield :D

8:18 PM
and the rod it uses to unlatch the hood

J/K

@Paulster2 That would work if I could unlatch it after I pull the internal release

Yah, great fun. The only way I can think of is if you are able to reach up and find where the rod is supposed to be attached to and pull it the rest of the way to release the safety catch ... I'm sure you've already tried that.

I was just hoping there was something I could do other than take it toi the shop

You'd need a skinny arm to accomplish.

8:19 PM
@Paulster2 ugh not so lucky there

You may be able to remove the grill portion.
That would give you enough room to get to the latch.

@Paulster2 idr where the latch is

I believe the grill is attached to the hood, right?

I mean I know which side it's on, but not the exact placement
@Paulster2 right

Yah, if you can get the grill off, you might be able to find it. You wouldn't know where it is, but would have to find it. If the grill can come off, you should be able to see where it should be attached. I'm not sure how the grill is attached, though. Never taken one off.
I don't know if it is screwed to the frame which is attached to the hood or if the grill is its own frame which is attached to the hood.
The latter would be harder to extract.

8:23 PM
@Paulster2 I think it's bolted in on a lot of places, from the inside
@Paulster2 Local mechanic actually fixed my truck last year when it did the same thing

yah, I'd double check, though. Seems like your only options at this point. You may be able to come up from between the bumper and the radiator and see if you can catch the release with a long stiff wire.
Hooked, of course

he had a long rod with a tiny hook on the end, and he reached in with that and opened the latch without even looking...
I felt so dumb
but I can't seem to do that

Why not. You be a smart fella!
:D
Which direction did he reach in? Through the grill?

@Paulster2 yup
I don't have the tool he had

I really wish I could help you. I mean, you're only in PA, right? I'll just take a leisurely stroll up there tomorrow and help you out ...
... yah ... right.

8:26 PM
eaup

You don't need the tool he had. All you need is a coat hanger with the end hooked on it and the knowledge of where to hook it ... seems the latter part has got you flummoxed.

Or I'll just have it towed over

Letting it squeal a little isn't going to destroy the engine.

Yeah I know

You may also be able to get to the pulley from underneath the truck.

8:27 PM
it was just messing with the music i was playing
@Paulster2 lol I'm not gonna worry about that til the hood opens

I've got a cure for it then ... turn the radio off ;-)
Anyway, if there are other ways in which I cannot help you, please be sure to drop me a line '-)

lol

9:25 PM
@Paulster2, Hi. Sorry, I meant my other two questions that I wrote in my original question, sorry! mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/18960/…

So I pour my heart into answering an AC problem and earn one upvote. Answer an easy one with an off-the-cuff reply and earn 5... Yeah, voting is irrational

10:09 PM
@Zaid - Sorry bro, I do my best ... probably the most prolific voter on the site (sans one). I can only give you one ... even if it is an awesome answer.

1 hour later…
11:20 PM
Folks, how could I find out the required intensity for turn signals (in candela or lumen) ?
