Q: Why is the carbanion formed in benzyne mechanism non-planar?

EdmDroid I was told by my chemistry teacher that the carbanion formed in the picture above is non-planar. I don't understand why. It looks like benzene with an extra electron pair at one of the carbons so shouldn't it be planar?

Isn't hybridization of C in CO3 2- is sp3?
?

2:34 PM
sp3?
Why sp3?

In chemistry, a carbonate is a salt of carbonic acid (H2CO3), characterized by the presence of the carbonate ion, CO2− 3. The name may also mean an ester of carbonic acid, an organic compound containing the carbonate group C(=O)(O–)2. The term is also used as a verb, to describe carbonation: the process of raising the concentrations of carbonate and bicarbonate ions in water to produce carbonated water and other carbonated beverages – either by the addition of carbon dioxide gas under pressure, or by dissolving carbonate or bicarbonate salts into the water. In geology and mineralogy, the term ...

One Oxygen is double bonded attached to carbon,other two Oxygen are single bond attached to carbon with one negative charge,so total there are four bonds right?

It's planar, it cannot be sp3

@Martin-マーチン I should draw a picture of carbonate's resonance structures using equilibrium arrows to annoy you right now

@M.A.R. ಠ_ಠ

2:37 PM
One double bond,and other two single bond with one e- charge ,so total 4 bonds not?

@Anonymous Well, what is the hybridization of carbon in ethene, roughly?

Sp2

ManishEarthThis is an offshoot of ChatJax, which enables MathJax along with mhchem on chat. Copy the text below: javascript:(function(){if(window.MathJax===undefined){var%20script=document.createElement("script");script.type="text/javascript";script.src="https://d3eoax9i5htok0.cloudfront.net/mathjax/lat...

And type in MathJax

@Martin-マーチン and @M.A.R.

@Anonymous explain

@Anonymous OK, so what's the problem here?

There are four bond attached to carbon

2:49 PM
That doesn't conflict with what we say, except it doesn't show the actual geometry.

So hybridization should be sp3

@Anonymous So is in ethene's case.
Why did you say sp2 in ethene's case?

I see,sorry for disturbance
I understand double bond means sp2 and single bond means sp3

No, geometry would mean either of sp2 and sp3.

OK,bye,thanks

This is a significant energy savings over traditional computing, which involves separately processing information and then storing it into memory. Here, the processing creates the memory.
