for about $100, you can get a pretty incredible bookshelf from Dover

user116211
@Rubisco, would you download the result, please?

@MAFIA36790 yes

user116211
@todd I have not seen an explicit discussion on Lagrange bracket other than in Lanczos so far.

@Rubisco some people were not following the rules...i asked to upvote for either "support" or "no support" for the policy...people started downvoting the support instead of upvoting the "not support" section

If there were 3 mods to be elected the third would have been you :-) @Rubisco

8:11 PM
Being a mod bears some responsibility, and not saying some things.
I can hardly do that.

Anonymous
it would be learning curve

That's not what I meant.
I'm a jerk sometimes.
Mods aren't allowed to be jerks.

I ran this time because I promised Mart.

@ZOZ I never really understood the conflict.

Anonymous
which conflict?

Pakistan vs. India
What has it cost the two countries except misery and more orphans?

Anonymous
8:38 PM
there are some morons in both countries who in the name of jihad /chauvinism are destroying their own countries

user116211
Can't disagree.

i guess india is still on the safer side (btw i don't trust the biased media here )

There, I'm back

Anonymous
nah they're cool :-P

@MAFIA36790 Hello!

8:40 PM
@ffahim It doesn't have a name, since we don't have Ch.

I need to rant about Chemistry, have I come to the right place?
@Rubisco Thanks!

@BernardMeurer Precisely.

[BEGIN RANT]
So, I'm a freshman in computer Engineering
and I disliked Chemistry throughout High School

user116211
@BernardMeurer I don't know how at the same moment, 0celo pinged me!!

AND THERE'S THIS STOOPID OCTET

8:42 PM
Actually, that's not fair

Ch ! did u say that for not using capital letter?@Rubisco

I liked Inorganic, I hated organic

@ffahim Yes. Correct capitalization matters.

user116211
It will be a mystery to me.

Well I have Chemistry in my freshman course

8:42 PM
@BernardMeurer Organic hates you too. He just told me.

and, well

Oh.... pls just tell me the answer@Rubisco

THIS PROF IS BANANAS

user116211
@rubisco, I wrote a congratulatory post; why in the world would someone downvote it ;/

The guy is doing triple integrals on spherical coordinates and we don't even know Calc I

8:43 PM
@ffahim What do you think the answer is? I wanna see what you have a problem with. I don't want to do your homework for you.

So everyone is on the brink of suicide, and there's an exam monday and I have no clue

[END RANT]

user116211
@BernardMeurer REVOLT AGAINST THAT PROF.

@BernardMeurer -1 VLQ rant

8:44 PM
@Rubisco I've been stripped of emotions

user116211
@BernardMeurer This is simply nonsense.

@MAFIA36790 Tell me about it, the man speaks Klingon

You should begin with insulting the person who invented octet and end with the person who discovered redox.

user116211
@BernardMeurer I knew it ;/

but anyways
*exam saturday

user116211
8:44 PM
@BernardMeurer Horror

It's not homework what I was thinking that which should be considered first. CH3- or C2H5- ?@Rubisco

user116211
You should report against the prof for making such a crap syllabus @bernard.

@ffahim First in doing what? That's a methyl and the second is an ethyl.

First of all, can anyone explain me what's the jazz with hybridization? Why is it that 2S and 2P do magic together and the other orbitals don't? Also, Why only 2Px and 2Py hybridate with 2S forming a $\sigma$ bond, while 2Pz forms a $\pi$ bond?

Is it just because methyl is in the first row of functional group? @Rubisco

8:47 PM
@BernardMeurer They don't do anything. That's the point.
Hybridization is something we made up.
It's mathematical, but doesn't happen in reality.
@ffahim You should draw trial structures and then start naming.
Don't throw wild guesses.

user116211
@bernard, dude you need a good book now to save yourself.

@Rubisco So I'm learning lies?

user116211
@BernardMeurer no.

@BernardMeurer Not lies, but a model that makes explaining some stuff better.

user116211
It's an efficient method in Valence Bond Theory.

8:49 PM
Hm. Bloody chemists

user116211
You don't need it in MOT.

@BernardMeurer Once you read good chemistry material, you'll start to love it.

I am just confused whether to consider CH3- belongs to second carbon or 4th carbon @Rubisco

@Rubisco The only good thing about Chemistry is I get to play with the spectrometer in the lab

@ffahim Tip; the ones in the parentheses are not from the main chain.

8:50 PM
Also hexane smells funny
That's nice too I guess

You should REALLY get something good to read.
Niceness isn't just something chemistry.
It's the science that's nice to play with. Chem is part of it.

Is it Ch3-CH2- ?@Rubisco

If taught well.

@Rubisco What's a good book then?

@BernardMeurer I have no idea what your level is.
But consider taking a look at our 'Resources for learning chem'.

8:52 PM
And idk what you're talking about the spectrometer spins like a carousel it's very fun

user116211
@BernardMeurer What are you learning basically? Which topic specifically?

Oh pls tell me @Rubisco .....

@Rubisco Freshmen course taught by a madman that resembles an oompa loompa
That's my level

Q: Resources for learning Chemistry

pH13 - Yet another PhilippBased on various other Stack exchange site (Mandarin Chinese, Russian and German), we adapt this project here for chemistry, since it's a great idea to have all kinds of resources in one place. This is a specifically created Community Wiki which gathers resources for learning Chemistry. The list...

@MAFIA36790 Bonds right now. We have to make these funny diagrams

8:53 PM
@ffahim I have no idea what you're referring to, but if it's a side chain, it won't be that.

It's a general chem course supposedly

OK, gotta sleep
Night all

@Rubisco Goodnight! Thanks for the reference!

Anonymous
@Rubisco Nighty night @BernardMeurer you should try the NCERT textbooks...they are awesome for basic CHEM

Anonymous
8:56 PM
yep

Anonymous
do try

Anonymous
read the chem books

user116211
@BernardMeurer Then go with Peter Atkins.

Anonymous
of XI and XII standard

Anonymous
peter is a bit hi-fi

Anonymous
8:57 PM
:-P

Anonymous
@MAFIA36790

Anonymous
but that too is good

user116211
It's an undergrad, pretty self-contained book.

user116211
@ZOZ No.

user116211
What I'm not getting is...

8:59 PM
I would not recommend atkins

user116211
Why in the world would anyone need to know Chem to be a comp. engg @Bernard ?!

Anonymous
well i used peter in high school too

Anonymous
its good but not so good

Anonymous
:-)

user116211
Why @ortho?

9:00 PM
@MAFIA36790 @ZOZ This is the book that my course recommends amzn.com/0073402680

user116211
@BernardMeurer Then you should read it.

Anonymous
chang is good

Anonymous
i read it

I'm willing to bet my prof doesn't have it lol
Let me try to buy it somewhere that isn't 300 dollars

Atkins is inaccessible to beginners

user116211
9:01 PM
@BernardMeurer Your prof will destroy you someday, I warn T__T

Not only my opinion- many people say the same

user116211
I then have to differ.

Anonymous
@orthocresol yeah i tried it in 11 standard....some things were really given in a convoluted manner...i left it and bought some video lectures

user116211
It's not an extraordinary book; but pretty accessible and useful to undergrads.

@MAFIA36790 That day is saturday on my exam

user116211
9:02 PM
:(

Okay, @MAFIA36790 Do you know how to do bond diagrams

user116211
@BernardMeurer like?

One sec, I'll take a pic

Anonymous
@MAFIA36790 It really depends whether you have previous exposure to Chem before undergrad...its not for noobs :-) "Peter"

@orthocresol ಠ_ಠ

9:07 PM
@MAFIA36790 These things

Anonymous
Well that's MOT

Anonymous
Molecular orbitals

Anonymous
not bond diagrams

user116211
@BernardMeurer Yes, this is MOT.

Anonymous
quite easy actually

9:08 PM
My notes are all in portugues, I never quite know how to translate them @ZOZ :)

@MAFIA36790 you are really the only person I know who disagrees :)

Okay, so look at 1S on that diagram

user116211
@orthocresol Wait... are you talking about his Computational QM book?

I know the bottom one is the bonding

Anonymous
Please read this pdf for understanding MOT

Anonymous
it explains really well

No. in fact I think mqm is easier to understand considering that it is targeted at people who already know a bit about the subject.

Anonymous
@BernardMeurer reading it?

@ZOZ Now I am, got a phone call

Obviously it depends on the user and their own style of learning, but most people I know did not like Atkins.

user116211
9:28 PM
Sure @orthocresol, I respect their and your opinion; but I can 't say anything more.

@MAFIA36790 Of course, you are entitled to like it as well :)
But I am a mod, so I think my opinion should be far superior to yours.
^^

Anonymous
Well the new moderator seal has already started bossing around ! ROFL :-D :-P

Anonymous
BTW congrats @orthocresol

Thanks.
