12:58 AM
hey @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M let me catch you tomorrow - thanks for the tip o' the hat, i gotta run :)

4 hours later…
5:01 AM
So three logicians walk into a bar. The bartender says "Do all of you want a beer?" The first one says "I don't know," the second one says "I don't know," the third one says "Yes!"
2

Have a star for that one :D

Thanks pal :D

I like the second version of that joke, too.
So three logicians walk into a bar. The bartender says "Do all of you want a beer?" The first one says "No."

indeed

5:22 AM
Hi! @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M
OK.

6:12 AM
@Martin-マーチン @Jan anyone there?

Can someone tell what does the term 0.01 g formula weight of NaCN mean ?

Anonymous
Is it same as 0.01 mole of NaCN ?

I don't really know... i am too long out of the experimental business

7:00 AM
Hi@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M

@Berne Hey!

I am studying linguistics for the test.

@SanchayanDutta I thought it meant 0.01 g of NaCN.
@Berne I'm writing Mr.Munesyar's homework.
;)

Oh, no, too boring.

Jan
@San it's a rea~lly bad way of putting things, because it mixes moles and weight. I would refuse that description and ask for one in grams, moles or equivalents.

7:08 AM
@Jan So what does it mean?

Jan
I'm not sure.

"0.01 g formula weight of NaCN" = "I'm not sure."? O.o

"Formula weight" should just mean the mass of the compound.

Should isn't reliable.

We need more context.

Anonymous
7:19 AM
Ok I got it now...it just means 0.01 g mole of NaCN :-P...language can sometimes be such a hurdle :-P

Anonymous
Thanks to all of you anyway :-)

7:39 AM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Do you have a printer?

@Berne Yes

did you see that paper in mehdi's hands?

What paper?

mehromah

7:57 AM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M What was the font munesyar was talking about.

@Berne Comic Sans MS. And what's more, it's a terrible font no expert in typesetting would use. But anyways.

not bad

Jan
@SanchayanDutta So problem: What the heck is a gram mole? ;)

8:22 AM
the quantity of a chemical compound equal to its molecular weight in grams; now usually replaced by the mole. Also called gram molecule.
:D

@Rigor Oh, I'm familiar with the deprecated gram molecule.

Anonymous
8:56 AM
Hehe basically 1 g mole=1g molecule =1 mole while n g formula weight is n times the weight of 1 formula of that in substance grams !

Anonymous
However for 1g equivalent weight is 1 mole multiplied by now factor :-P

Anonymous
Can't believe I spent 2 hrs searching the meaning of these terms :-P ...hope it's resolved now!

Jan
10:15 AM
Such stupid terms, as I said ;)

Anonymous
10:30 AM
Really stupid :-P @Jan but I am happy that I could complete ionic equilibrium only after I learnt those terms :-P hehe :-D

Anonymous
*n factor (typo above)

11:22 AM
Hi!
How is everyone.

Jan
Oh sorta fine-ish, I believe @getafix o/ Hi

o/
I am looking for some texbook recommendations..
Our pchem class, we are using atkins' physical chemistry..

Jan
Textbook recommendations? No clue, sorry .__.''

But sometimes i feel that the mathematics/derivations, are a little bit insufficient, or atleast seem that way to me. Could someone suggest some supplemental reading.
Oh no problem, Jan.

12:19 PM
@getafix What subject are you doing? Thermo or quantum or something else?

thermo.
for now

i see
i know what you mean, I (and a lot of people I know) found Atkins horrible he just states things and skips 75% of the steps
so I used Levine's phy chem

I know right. and our professor, isn't a great help either. He asks to work through the math ourselves if we are interested.

can't comment on other popular textbooks, never really tried them :p

No problem mate. thanks. I already bought a copy of atkins for the course. will check this out from the library, and give it a go

12:26 PM
Must say though, once you are familiar with the concepts and stuff, atkins is a great reference.

True. I have a feeling it would be great to come back to for like a review
but not so great if you are seeing all of this for the first time

Lots of people feel the same way so don't worry. All the best :)

Thank you. @orthocresol

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M just go looking for a question of Steve's ;)

user161117
Besides, I don't think answering you Jan would have helped

Why are people suddenly so vague here?

user161117
since you were asking about trigonal pyramidal which wouldn't have clarified it oh well

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Why are people here? :O

1:19 PM
@Wildcat Because of TRE.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M nope, because of Friday.

@Wildcat Yeah, that was the rationale for the time of the schedule.
I wonder if @Bon will make it.

Jan
@Steve I think it would, because it also touches the two definitions of linear. One being 'a chain of molecules all connected to one preceding and one following' and the other being 'in a straight line'. The opposite of the first one would be pyramidal in SOCl2's case, the opposite of the second one 'bent'.

user161117
maybe, but I didn't interpret it that way so I wouldn't have answered it that way

user161117
1:26 PM
happens, I guess I didn't imagine someone would place oxygen in a linear structure oh well

user161117
like ethers aren't sp hybridized

user161117
it's colloquial to call them 'straight-chain alkanes' I mean hey whatever it's just a simple misunderstanding not the end of the world here lol

Jan
Haha, yeah, but I was planning on answering given your information; but first I was planning on checking my notes from molecular chemistry 2 from the winter term 2011/12 ;)

user161117
Yeah I have sorta had this question in the back of my mind, although not very important to me, it's just it stands out cause when I was taking Ochem 1 several years ago the teacher asked me to come to the board and draw the lewis structure

user161117
and I drew that, and like it checks out naively so he was kinda like

user161117

inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.MTL;DR It's because the enthalpy changes of a solution generally don't favor dissolution. A longer version: To explain this, usually the enthalpy change explanation is given. For the sake of understandability, let's see what happens when two compounds dissolve. Take ethanol dissolving in water ...

Q: How quickly will steel lose structural strength from a heat flash?

sharpCodeI want to know if a sustained jet fuel burn around steel has the ability to make the steel structurally unsound. It seems like any applied heat that effects steel will be a kind of "heat flash": a sudden, and possibly quite short-lived, burst of heat. In this situation, we assume steel has a melt...

What should I tag questions which are purely 'How do I do this calculation'? and don't come under any existing tag. E.g http://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/15706/density-of-an-object
I want to create a density tag for that really

@Bon creating tags without a meta post is messy.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Exactly

Guys if you remember to discuss some meta, or want to know how to tag a specific question, use chat.

Here in our school once some teachers came for a demo coaching class and tey said it takes about 5 to 6 days to learn it

3:54 PM
@Kartik I close that question as 'too broad'. :P Seriously, that's the very reason for why people learn reaction-mechanism.

@bon, there is also
but it haz no wiki!

@Wildcat The purpose of this event is to clean up junk-ish tags like those.
If we ever need them later, we'll make them again.

@Wildcat I actually created that one but iddn't create a wiki yet.
Okay, I'll re-edit and delete in that case xD

3:55 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M, there are few qs which will fall into this!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Earlier I also thought its too broad but the teachers from Bansal classes say that they can teach it in 5 to 6 days. Now that is very specific

@Jan, no wait.

Is really only for acid base reactions?

Or can it also include other questions about bases and acids?

3:56 PM
@Kartik Come after five or six days and we'll throw you reactions where those rules they teach you don't apply.

@Jan Is it about elemental analysis or non?
not

bon
Also are we ignoring questions with score less than 0

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M we had rejected their demo due to their high cost. :(

@bon No.
If it's good enough to stay, it should be edited.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I know the rules dont apply everywhere but at least I will know the basics
