@Lilienthal being colorblind and all I generally don't get involved in design, but for me they are both rotated blocks. Geuss how often i tried to flag a new puzzleing question as off Topic :P

9:41 AM
@RaoulMensink I'd encourage you to give your input in those meta threads if you haven't already.

@Lilienthal would love to, but I don't have rep there

9:56 AM
There's one on our meta that I think you can comment on @RaoulMensink:

Q: Is the puzzling icon too similar to ours?

LilienthalOr is it just me? Frankly it doesn't seem to be just me as, it was this comment, currently on 34 upvotes that prompted me to raise this on meta: With the new site icon and the introduction to the post, I thought I'm on Workplace. – Tomáš Zato It's nice to see that puzzling graduated and ...

Or answer

I put up a answer ;P

@Lilienthal I wanted to put a joke in my anwser, but then i read your comment about meta is always deadly serious :(

That was a joke I think. :)
Thanks for answering by the way.

yeh well, I know but it just didnt feel funny anymore

11:30 AM
Well, I now have the dubious honour of having the top-voted answer on the site. Thank you xkcd I guess...

11:58 AM
@Lilienthal meta vote's dont give rep?

@RaoulMensink Correct.

But downvoteing costs rep
thats mean

A single point is hardly breaking the bank. Get one upvote on main and you get to downvote 10 times.
It's designed to prevent abusive voting.

12:13 PM
well for you that might be the case but I lose about 0.5% per downvote rapdily increasing

Hey People, I have a quick question

go ahead

12:42 PM
Yesterday I was informed my contract, which expires next tuesday, will not be renewed. Is it too early to update my CV and Linkedin profile right now, or should I wait a few days?

bit late actually
I would have started a couple of weeks ago with getting a new Job since I dont like being unemployed

I would have, but I was on leave due to illness... I just found out yesterday

@Trickylastname It's never too early to update things. Many people keep all of their profiles and CVs up to date even if they are not looking for a new job.

Unless you are working as a at will employee updateing your resume can't hurt

Staying updated doesn't mean you are actively looking for a new job, it just means you are prepared. You can still fight to get your contract renewed, if you think that is possible and desirable.

12:47 PM
BTW, I've been job searching since February, but nothing came up. (shrugs) The weird thing is that previously the PM told me by phone they will hire me as a permanent employee. Apparently he changed his mind while I was away.

Sadly those are empty words. Since any promise for a period longer than 1 year without writing is worthless.

Yep. Anyway, I wanted to leave my job a long time ago. Funny thing, work is piling up and yet he argued "budget reasons" when he told me... I guess he will miss me very soon.

@Trickylastname thats not a "Problem" they can hire a temp for that
or even better unpaid/cheap interns

Jjaja, there are no intern system where I live
And temps are very unusual, because the system I work with has a tough learining curve. But anyway, I won't be here when the project catches fire again.

1:02 PM
what the System called?
or Programm language

1:15 PM
It's an internal system for telecummunications. AFAIK, was created exclusively for the company a long time ago.

@@Trickylastname remember, an oral agreement is worth the paper it's written on

I wonder if you get an audio recording...
> "His employer (a mid size company) as a result is now forcing him to work 2 hours of unpaid overtime every day, to "keep the active time fair" between him and his colleagues, who supposedly all also have a longer commute."
Why does everyone take this for granted?
"They're forcing him to..."
Literally incorrect.

that situation seems so bizarre I can't even think through it

As it cannot possibly be true.
"They're forcing him to..." is in reality something like, "His boss strongly suggested he..."
Or even, 'after smiling and telling his boss that he just shaved 2 hours off his daily commute, his boss said, smiling "I expect you to come in and stay after an extra hour each day, that's fair, isn't it?"'
And this "friend's" bull$hit radar is broken, and the boss won't contradict himself because he got more than he bargained for.
Gah, why won't they close the refrigerator door!? It's right behind me, and beeps all the time.

@AaronHall there was a comment agreeing though, which is what confused me

Well, when I was a part-time codemonkey I had a team leader who told once told me that I had to to two hours overtime "as a sing of respect for the other employees who work full time". So that part of OP's question is not that weird for me.

2:42 PM
Should I presume you got paid for that "overtime"?

*do *sign. Damn it.
Nop. 100% unpaid.

Work wants to make their problems your problems. If you create value, you can go anywhere. The trick is to put yourself in a stronger negotiating position.

I told him "sorry, I can't, I have German lessons after work".

A lot of times "value" is hard to quantify.

My boss seems pretty awesome about this sort of thing, honestly

2:45 PM
That's a strong position - it's better to say "No" because you have something important, as opposed to "that's when I watch Friends reruns."
@enderland it's a cultural thing. I'm sure that some managers think they best create value when they kill the golden goose.
Treating people poorly is shortsighted, and will lead to much higher turnover.

Well, those German lessons had been in my bucket list for ages. In the end they replaced me with a Senior dev who was treated as a Messiah. He quitted this year and now they're desperately trying to get someone.

Yeah... even when you treat people well, you have to deal with turnover, because someone else will promise to treat them even better, and sometimes they listen.
I sometimes think "cultural fit" means "I think I can really ride this guy hard."

@AaronHall yeah, there's a culture to treat employees as cattle. Student employees are even less. With me (and the other two who were fired yesterday) it's nine people who left the project. Maybe ten. I lost count.

I wonder if you can get an on-topic question out of that.
Well a friend of mine finally got hired.

I doubt it. Now I wonder how I going to present this in an interview. It's the second time I find myself without a job for "budget reasons". The same excuse won't sound good now.

2:56 PM
He's been trying to get hired for a year or more.
Everyone's got a budget. You were the new junior guy. They ran out of money for you. But now you've got more experience and can probably command a higher salary.
I doubt you'll have trouble getting hired. I suppose you should do the jobs thing here on StackOverflow first. Then try other approaches if that doesn't work.

Ah, salary. Funny enough, they gave me a raise last month. We know call that raise "Judas' kiss", cause most of the people who got it were fired.

Maybe it was a mistake on their part, which led to the decision to fire.
"Hey, let's give a raise." "Great idea, it'll help with retention!" [one week later] "Whoah! The raises were a big mistake! We're not going to get this funding we were expecting! We need to fire everyone only keep the truly critical."

XDDDD Not even the critical were safe. One of the fired was the only one who knew the billing system. They even didn't gave him time to write a document with the basics. Well, my manager will regret it next time the billing system it's on fire.

3:23 PM

puzzling...
It doesn't look like a puzzle.
But neither does it look like a workplace.

@DavidK You must be new to SE if you've only just found this. :)

@Lilienthal Lol, definitely not new to SE, just haven't seen this one pop up yet. Though I can't say I browse Meta SE regularly.

10:39 PM
Fair enough. :)
It's a very, very common close reason, especially on SO.
