Q: New Review Queue: First Posts

Shog9We're grinding through the old /review queues, moving them into the new Community Review Dashboard format. Recently, Emmett's been slaving over a hot compiler to bring you: the First Posts queue: This is a bit different from the preview queues, which tend to focus on a handful of very specif...

Q: Is there an accepted etiquette towards return receipt emails?

JoelFanWhenever I receive an email with a return receipt request, I feel somewhat slighted, like they don't trust that I will act on the email and want proof that I read it. Is there any accepted etiquette toward this email feature? I have avoided using it myself.

I suppose the proper response is NOT to copy the email (without opening) and then permanently delete the email so the user gets a "message deleted without being read" notification, eh? :-)
The way Outlook handles message receipt requests is silly
Since copying the message allows you do to multiple handlings of the same event
And copies ALSO count - I once did this to a friend of mine and sent him like 50 automatic "message deleted without being read" messages :)
(well exchange did, I guess)

1:51 PM
I never knew how that all worked. I use outlook for work but don't like it or use any advanced features
In case it wasn't clear, that First Posts review queue is active now on Workplace

I like using VBA so I do a lot of... interesting stuff with it :-)

the horror

yeah, I know :|

Maintaining old VB .net programs is bad enough

I should say I am good at VBA

1:57 PM
we have a bunch of crap in the registry

I'd prefer python/c++

2:17 PM
@enderland I prefer web stuff...but design is my thing so that makes sense

I like design as well - my background is in HCI

native applications always have horrific methods to create the actual GUI
@enderland same here, bachelors in HCI and Psychology

my background is Mecanical engineering/hci
well technically I'm not graduated with my MS in HCI/ME so I guess my backgroud is only ME right now :P

3:15 PM
@enderland I graduated a year and a half ago. Almost did the graduate school thing

3:51 PM
good call ;)
our school didn't have a non-grad HCI program

It's not all that common yet, but spreading quick
our HCI department just started a year after I started college and was expanding as I graduated

yeah. it's a big deal, since so many programmers jsut code sweet code but don't make it usable

@enderland and most GUI toolkits treat it like a half-assed addition to the program, building interfaces is always like pulling teeth
hence you really need someone responsible for the UI itself and the greater user experience as well

heh yeah this is so true. I am so surprised when people look at Apple and go "omg how are they so popular their tech is inferior" since that is the ONLY thing apple focuses on
"how is the user experience"

Jim
The trick is to nail down the user experience/interface before you write a single line of code

4:02 PM
@Jim Impossible :P you have to iterate too

Jim
If there is no button to Foo the Bar, you could spend two weeks writing the most beuatiful code ever seen (or not, in this case) to Foo the Bar, but it will all have been a waste of effort

You have to at least have prototypes to do good testing and you have to respond to issues that pop up post release

Jim
Right, but if you're releasing something (even if it's just a prototype to some testers), it should really be based on an accepted UI design
Then you can cut/add stuff based on actual use of the designed features

+1
the best functionality in the world only matters if people can find it

Jim
right
and I'd bet most average-joe users of Gmail don't consider "deleting emails" as functionality, but instead consider the delete button itself as a great function
It's all about what the user sees and does, and the program just interacts with (data/network/monitor/live animals/speakers) based on what the user wants to do

4:07 PM
@Jim Hm I'm not sure I agree with "accepted"; things should be tested before they're accepted in any way, ideally

that's why I like gmail so much
I've used it for like 8 years
and never needed more functionlaity, ever
because the key use cases I have are almost ALL present
the only thing is I wish it had a better interface for huge resolution monitors

I really do love gmail (AND the redesign)

Jim
@BenBrocka I mean accepted as in a user (or group of users) (or potential user/group, at the point when nothing is built) has looked at mockups/samples and said "yes, this is something I would use. This makes sense"
of course also making changes based on their feedback before considering it "accepted"
I wasn't a fan of the redesign, it gave me an impression of looking blank

@Jim Ah, yeah. For the general layout and stuff at least

Jim
too much whiteness and not enough clear-cut buttons
I know they're there and labeled with an icon and all

4:10 PM
It's supposed to be rather minimalist, the old layout was very cluttered.

Jim
but I don't know, maybe I just don't like change

Personally I don't like seeing the skeuomorphic buttons mixed in with otherwise minimalistic interface elements...the clash is just weird. You can go too far, but IMO the buttons are distinct enough, unlike some elements in Office 2013

Jim
It does mention iterative user feedback, but the diagrams cover what I was saying
what information each screen provides, and what actions it allows
and a general idea of layout
can all be decided before actually writing it
and if done well, don't need to change

I was like "WTF am I looking at" for a good minute before I saw "last updated 2000"

Jim
Ha

4:14 PM
:)

Jim
Did you not read the tiny intro text at the top? :)

@Jim Ah, so you mean more the IA than the interface?
@Jim Looked like legalese, immediately ignore

Jim
kind of
You can work in enough overlap to get a solid interface design
which really simplifies development, I've found

> The password box allows for up to 12 characters to be typed.
Joel, I am disapoint

ugh linux and library configuration can be obnoxious
'just sayin

4:28 PM
linux configuration obnoxious? Nawww

heh.

4:53 PM
I think I have more theoretical meta rep than I do real rep here

Jim
You are one of only two users to have a tag badge on meta
Considering you have no tag badges on the main site, that might be true
there are two users with tag badges on each!
each time the same bronze badge
but 4 different people
interesting
I'm barely halfway to any tag badges :(
so shiny......

hehehe
/me just got the bow I ordered
going to be a rough afternoon for productivity...

Q: How should you list a question project that provided great experience on your resume?

ZarThere are several types of projects you could work on that could be sensitive for various reasons (involvment might disclose your personal political affiliations, the legality might be questionable, etc). However, projects such as this can still be valuable experiences where you develop or exerci...

Maybe a few upvotes for this?
I've cleaned it up a bit, so it's (in my opinion) a better than it was when it got its downvotes
better question*

sure I'll change that downvot eto a neutral :)

@Jim Much better

Jim
6:10 PM
Thanks!
@enderland I was hoping at least some of the downvoters would encounter the improvement. Didn't think that would actually happen!

Q: Learning The Business

Jim G.I came across this excellent post, and I think it yields an excellent, answerable question. I recently started my first "grown-up" job as a software developer. As exciting as it is to get paid for doing what I love, I can't help but wonder if I'm expecting waaaay too from a company. ...

how is this not completely localized?

Jim
Localized? Looks like you voted NARQ
I went with Not Constructive, since it's very debatable

@Jim can I change my vote for that? I guess it is a real question

Jim
Nope, but once it's closed, whichever reason got the most votes will show up anyway
The only real answers to that are "yes, too much was expected. life doesn't work that way" and "no, it should not be like that"
and both can be backed up by all sorts of reasoning and personal experience

Right, it's 100% subjective unless the organization has clearly defined policies for such things (which are hardly ever around and even if so, most people probably arne't even aware of them)

Jim
And if the organization does have a policy, then we are back to Too Localized
since it only applies to that organization

7:20 PM
I'll just sit here and see which close vote wins

Jim
7:32 PM
@BenBrocka I was just about to ask if you were going to step in and close it before it starts gathering answers
Although it only has one right now

Too slow, may as well wait for a community close

Jim
Speaking of community, it seems presence in chat is growing
along with site views per day

@Jim yep, the view growth looks pretty good

7:51 PM
heh I've been idling in chat >.>

3 hours later…
10:54 PM
@Jim also, surprisingly, the current views-per-day are mostly real views, not because of the recent spike in views (the leaving an interview early question got like 30k views). If it keeps up and we keep getting more questions we'll be well on the way to graduation

1 hour later…
11:59 PM
@Jim: Thanks, Jim.
