Can we hammer this question into an FAQ-tag worthy post?

Q: Are questions about what career field one could go into on-topic for The Workplace?

Jon of All TradesI would like to ask for examples of career paths that require the use of advanced mathematics (say, college algebra or higher). This is not just idle curiosity, it's a consideration for how to teach my kids, and would be relevant to a discussion on parenting.SE. However, the result would probab...

It's been suggested. The question would need a rewrite but the answer by the always lovely Rarity pretty well lays out the current policy and reasoning for it

always lovely?

Of course

@BenBrocka ha ha

Took a stab at editing it, not sure how well I articulated it though

(couldn't find a trollface)

@BenBrocka I was agreeing with you!

:o
is it normal for so many questions to be closed initially on one of the new boards?

@enderland 1/7 questions closed, not really all that out of line
we get a lot of blatantly off topic/too localized stuff so it's not surprising

is it really only 1/7? feels liek way more @BenBrocka :P

613 unclosed, 102 closed
Not counting deleted posts though

that might be it :P I feel like I've logged on here a few times and seen like 1/2 the recent posts closed, but those might end up in deletedland space

Our higher rep users are pretty awesome about getting unsalvagable posts downvoted, closed and deleted in relatively short order

I finally got to the threshold to vote answers for close
kinda nice...

I noticed your name popping up in closed by lists. Always great to see a new member of the community stepping up :)

heh. I enjoy this site since I'm finishing school in a few months
kinda becomes useful :-)
But I have a harder time feeling qualified to really answer things since, well, hah. though I've got quite a few years work experience now..

Also FWIW 1/7 closed is surprisingly close to the number UX gets
And lower than Programmers for sure

huh. I guess the problem here is so many questions are localized
I'd be curious to see a demographic breakdown of what people are in terms of age/field on here

lots of programmers/IT just because of the SE network
Really a bigger problem is people not reading the FAQ and hoping we're another site that will tell you what salary range you should ask for/what job you should get

6:27 PM
Yeah, and as someone going through teh "what am I worth?" process at the moment, I can say I understand taht appeal :-)
it's difficult to really find concrete information on non-governemnt jobs

Yeah...we've got the one generalized question though, and every non-generalized answer would only be useful in one city in one job sector at one point in time...
We could rack up a lot of questions helping very few people...

heh yeah. I've got the unfortuante situation where I'm going to have a masters, and be an engineer who can also do lots of "magic" with software and coding
talk about reasoanbly localied :)
wow, spelling fail
reasonably localized *
unfortunate *

You can edit chat posts for a couple minutes; click the arrow to the left of the message (it shows up on hover)
Unless you're on mobile, then you're SoL

ah, funny, I was able to edit the corrections but not the original one when I checked... timing fail
The recent question about salary after a "what is your expected salary" was interesting
shows the advantages of NOT giving an initial salary

@BenBrocka do you mean arrow to the left?
That's where I find the edit link, and I see no arrow to the right of my own posts

6:38 PM
lol I didn't even notice that :|
(it's to the left)

One of those directions

(I still do that periodically...)

Q: Repeated question meme - how can I get more money in my job/negotiation?

bethlakshmiEvery day, I'm seeing a repeated meme, and I'm wondering if we we are getting to a subset where we want to try to have some sort of meta-answer or meta-question/answer set that we could start referencing for duplicates. I see two general meta-questions that could each have their own answer thr...

Yeah, noo kidding.

Q: Motivation has no learning-curve, just man up

Aske B.I'm not entirely sure this is the right place to post it, so please direct me if I'm wrong. Backstory Currently I'm in an internship, and in a few months I'll be graduating as a "computer scientist", or internationally you might call it a programmer. Growing up, motivation has always been a...

Delete or don't delete?
(consider the answer too)

7:28 PM
hard to want to delete a question like that with so much effort applied to it but man it's not really a good question

8:38 PM
@enderland it was on request, so I went ahead and deleted

Ahhhh. No worries :) I know there is no direct relationship between time writing to quality but it often feels that way sometimes - "oh they tried hard I'll give them some slack"

Yeah. I think he's learned from it though, so it's still good
