It's much faster at cracking ice.

Sure, you risk losing that pickaxe too.

You can also have ice melt with a torch

...just don't put the torch directly above the ice :)

you could try and build a tunnel with dirt.

you can place doors, ladders, and signs underwater if you have enough wood stored to make the water vacate the area

so that you can breathe

since those objects take up the whole block

torches don't work because the water just washes them away

1. Build a rectangle around the area with dirt
2. Fill the level with dirt
3. Remove dirt
4. Repeat one level below.
5. Take less than 15 minutes from your original drown

Dirt replaces water source blocks...

also don't forget, underwater removal takes 5 times longer.

Q: How much longer does it take to mine blocks underwater or while airborne?

I noticed that when my feet aren't firmly placed on the ground, it takes significantly longer to mine blocks, even with high-end tools. Is there a factor that mining time is increased by for these conditions? What is it?
